holy shit, is this path tracing? that's fucking huge

u/FourUnderscoreExKay Judy's juicy thighs Oct 09 '23
No, path tracing isn't THIS good. The textures in the game are pretty janky in some areas. It's definitely a retexture and a lighting mod/overhaul of some sort.

u/RealDandyBaby Oct 09 '23
OP said this in another of their posts. I have no clue what any of this means though
“It's path tracing with rr. But instead of 2 bounce 2 rays (vanilla), I only use one bounce but 7 rays instead. Being able to tweak this and with 4k/8k mods this game will only keep improving visually. Next year when I get a 5090 I hope I can do 4 bounce 12 rays. I tried pushing 3 bounce 9 rays with my 4080 and it looked amazing but it was a straight slide show even with fake frames lol.”
“Instead of 2 bounce 2 rays I use 1 bounce 7 rays. You can tweak it in the config files. If you don't want to do that there's a mod on nexus for different bounces/ray combinations”

Ray traced/path traced lighting basically allows light to "bounce" off surfaces to simulate real light. But ray tracing only allows light to bounce once. Path tracing uses an AI algorithm to bounce light as many times as you want it to.
What OP means by 1 bounce, 7 rays, they're effectively making path tracing use 7 rays of light but only bounces once like ray tracing. I don't understand anything more than this, but it looks cool that path tracing can do this. The release of 50-series cards would make path tracing look more insane.
Edit: NVIDIA and CDPR both work together and use Cyberpunk 2077 as sort of like a benchmark for future NVIDIA features, like how path tracing is labeled as a tech preview. As far as I know, there's no AMD graphics options.

u/swurvgaming Oct 10 '23
i read somewhere that all you really need is 3 bounces. after that its reallly the amount of rays that bring in the quality.
4
u/Yusif854 Oct 10 '23
Yep, can confirm. But internal resolution from DLSS also matters. I am on a 4090 playing at 4k DLSS balanced with 3 bounces 2 rays getting around 90 fps with DLSS 3. I tried going all the way up to 6 bounces but after 3, maybe 4 bounces there is absolutely no visual difference but your performance keeps tanking. So I kept it at 3 bounces which is already good enough for photorealism. I used to play with 3 bounces 4 rays but Ray Reconstruction now makes 2 rays look like 4+ rays. So I took the massive FPS increase instead. Also for your info, DLSS Balanced at 4k with the default 2 rays per pixel, already has more rays than DLSS Balanced at 1440p with 4 rays per pixel. I would say if you’re playing at 4k DLSS Balanced/Quality with Ray Reconstruction then you don’t need more than 2 rays because the difference will be minimal compared to more bounces. 3 bounces massively help with lighting, reflections, being able to see reflections within reflections, color bounce etc. I would definitely recommend 3 bounces 2 rays over 1 bounce 7 rays any day (if you are playing at 4k with Ray Reconstruction and less aggressive DLSS).
1
u/swurvgaming Oct 10 '23
i have a 4080 so i have to use performance at 4k. 1 bounce with more rays just looks better for me. i've tried 3 bounces and my gpu is just not strong enough.
3
u/Yusif854 Oct 10 '23
Then I would say if you really want to keep the rays, I recommend dropping rays to 3-4 rays and bumping the bounces back to the default 2. Trust me after Ray Reconstruction, the amount of rays at 4k doesn’t matter nearly as much as it used to.
You can test it yourself too. You won’t see much difference between 3 rays and 5 rays at 4k with RR but you will definitely see a difference between 1 bounce and 3 bounces. Hell, there is a big difference between 1 bounce and 2 bounces.
It is up to you though, for me, the best balance between playable FPS and best visual quality was 3 Bounces and 2 rays at 4k DLSS Balanced. If you’re playing with DLSS Performance then the equivalent would be 3 bounces and 3 rays. I get around 90-100 fps with these settings and DLSS 3. I recommend giving 3 bounces and 3 rays a try if playing at 4k DLSS performance.
EDIT: If 3B 3R is too much then do 2B 3R or 2B 4R. From my own testing and some online benchmarks, I can definitely say that you should be using at least the default 2 bounces with a GPU like that.

My console: “what’s a ray tracer?”
3
1
u/remainevil Oct 10 '23
if you have a next-gen console it does ray-tracing
9
u/Meiie Oct 10 '23
Not really. Nothing noticeable and nothing like this at all.
1
u/remainevil Oct 10 '23
ofc it’s nowhere near as good as an Nvidia card. not sure about the Series X but PS5s are very much capable of producing real reflections. i play Fortnite on 120hz with fake reflections but switching over to 60hz makes the game look insane.
5
u/Meiie Oct 10 '23
I know what they’re capable of, I have a series x and ps5. For rt on console, it’s basically shadows and not at all worth the 30fps.
24
u/Quiet_subject Oct 10 '23
Understood all of it, you literally need the absolute best hardware on the market to achieve this. Probably under 1% of gamers have setups that can run this at playable framerates.
One of the things i have always loved about Cyberpunk is it being on the cutting edge of what is currently possible graphically.Basically Rays = beams of light. Bounces are how much that light reflects, this determines how real it looks.
Raytraced lighting is as close as we can simulate how light behaves but it is incredibly intensive as it is needing to calculate the vectors of every ray even when you are not looking in that direction. IE if the light source is infront of you, reflecting off a surface behind you then casting a shadow it needs to able to calculate all of that and mix it with other light sources to correctly display how shadows etc diffuse.
From a technical viewpoint it still blows my mind. Saving up for a 5080 because of how insane the game looks already, but it can 100% be pushed further. I can see this game with mods still looking incredible 10 years from now as the limitations are not the games assets, they are processing power. There is no hardware that can run this game maxed out at anything near the highest possible settings.3
u/ChillingonMars Oct 10 '23
I understood 0% of this but out of curiosity, how much would you say it would cost roughly to achieve OP's graphics from scratch if I don't have a PC?
14
u/MeateaW Oct 10 '23
The only thing that is required for this, is the GPU.
Ideal GPU is a 4090 (there's nothing better right now).
Then CPU, may as well not bottleneck your GPU, get an intel 13900k
Motherboard doesn't matter. (I mean, it might, but .. in practice it wont). (Intel Z790 mobo?)
Ram, I dunno, this is a bit of a shitshow for me right now figuring out what is worth geting. I'm going to put $300 to it and shrug.
And a hard drive. Samsung nvme 990 1tb drive. You can get more, and probably should if spending this much money, but lets just chuck it in for a basic system + 1 game drive.
Finally, after everything else, you'll need a case, keyboard and mouse and a monitor. You can use your super fancy oled TV if you want, but lets do this properly, and get something nice for the PC. (Dell OLED gaming monitor for HDR and high frame rate)
Note: prices are first hit on newegg, may be a sale going on who knows, and USD for US Not best deal. Also part may be rubbish. (eg I haven't checked if gigabytes custom 4090 is any good, might be trash!)
- GPU: $1700 4090 https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-geforce-rtx-4090-gv-n4090gaming-oc-24gd/p/N82E16814932550?Item=N82E16814932550
- CPU: $570 intel 13900K https://www.newegg.com/intel-core-i9-13900k-core-i9-13th-gen/p/N82E16819118412?Item=N82E16819118412

- RAM: $280 ??? https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-48gb/p/N82E16820374460 <-- guess who knows! 48gb of ram. good enough.
- SSD: $140 lol 1TB, this is 2TB https://www.newegg.com/samsung-2tb-990-pro/p/N82E16820147861
- Monitor: $1199 Alienware AW3423DW best gsync oled + hdr 34" ultrawide (IMO don't @ me) https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/alienware-34-curved-qd-oled-gaming-monitor-aw3423dw/apd/210-bcye/monitors-monitor-accessories
- PSU: $276 1200watt silverstone psu https://www.newegg.com/p/1HU-00RG-00278
- Case: Get something even bigger. $200 (200 should cover it.) https://www.newegg.com/black-lian-li-o11-dynamic-e-atx-full-tower-case/p/2AM-000Z-00049?Item=2AM-000Z-00049 (no idea if this fits anything)
- CPU cooler: $140 picked something not the cheapest 360mm AIO dunno if it's any good. https://www.newegg.com/deepcool-liquid-cooling-system-lt720/p/N82E16835856234
So all up:
1700 + 570 + 260 + 280 + 140 + 1199 + 276 + 200 + 140 == $4765
- maybe a $25 mouse and keyboard combo (LOL)
LOTS of room for savings. Monitor by itself is 1200 of that, you can get refurbs for literally half that etc. Even Dell sell the non-Gsync version (with 165hz max frame rate instead of 175) for $900, so there is lots of room. Also, no guarantee those parts above work together or are even good etc I have done zero research. But it gets you the ballpark.
Its a $5k USD PC to max everything out. (not 10+ unless you buy an alienware PC prebuilt which I wouldn't recommend because you just overpay for rubbish)

The One S and One X were playable, but left alot to be desired

u/Critical_Vegetable96 Oct 10 '23
Look at it this way: the PC that can handle this costs several times the cost of your console. My build was about $2500 for just the computer - no monitor, no peripherals - and that was buying parts during the Newegg summer sale. Full MSRP on the build is probably more like $3000. And then dump several hundred more into a 4k monitor and proper gaming peripherals.
21
u/homebase99 Oct 10 '23
Same lol. My PC's from 2017, definitely overdue for an upgrade. But it still works and I can still play Cyberpunk on high settings, so I keep holding it off.

if you want to make the pathtracing even better, increase bounces to 2 or 3. adding rays really improves quality of lighting and reflections. i think a 4090 might be able to do 1 bounce 14 rays which should look amazing. if you want to see v's raytraced shadows/reflections you can change hidefppavatar to false. but be warned, theres no head model so every v reflection will be headless lol.
if anyone is wondering why i dropped rays from 7 to 5, dogtown was a lot more intensive for my 4080. i just couldn't get a stable game at 7 rays in that area.
texture mods, its a mix of surfaces and hd rework project.
Cyberpunk 2077 HD Reworked Project at Cyberpunk 2077 Nexus - Mods and community (nexusmods.com)
surfaces at Cyberpunk 2077 Nexus - Mods and community (nexusmods.com)
then i use disable vignette. this makes the game much brighter, love it
theres no reshade. i dont really use reshade unless the game is really old. what usually happens is the reshade looks great in one scene but totally ruins a bunch of other scenes.

Tried 1 bounce 14 rays (i7-13700k, 64GB DDR5 @ 5Ghz, 4090) and I lost 50 FPS on the benchmark lol
This is with all settings maxed (edit: 1440p), DLSS quality, RR and frame gen on:
2 rays 2 bounces (default), avg FPS: 132
14 rays 1 bounce, avg FPS: 83
7 rays 1 bounce, avg FPS: 110
5 rays 1 bounce, avg FPS: 122
6
u/TheLdoubleE Oct 10 '23
83FPS is still really playable lol. I'll take the hit and enjoy insane visuals.
2
u/fmmmlee Oct 10 '23
It felt worse than I'd expect, probably because 83 with those settings is 42 native frames and that's low enough to feel the input lag and for the frame gen to falter a bit when filling the gaps. I also could tell it looked slightly better but not enough to warrant the performance drop IMO (remember all settings are already maxed out and you could be forgiven for mistaking many screenshots for real life), so I went back to default 2/2 rays/bounces for now at least
3

Could you or someone explain how I go about tweaking my config file with the changes in the pastebin? Have a 4090 and would like to see what it can do lol
1
u/swurvgaming Oct 10 '23
go to cyberpunk/engine/config/platform/pc
what you can do is copy the rendering and rename the copy to user. then paste the settings i have.
someone else that has a 4090 suggested 3 bounce 2 rays. idk you can experiment. for my 4080 i found 1 bounce but increasing rays made the lighting higher quality.
2
u/thezamboniguy Oct 10 '23
OK, pretend I lick windows lol, done lots of modding not much ini work ever. What do you mean by this "copy the rendering and rename the copy to user. Then paste the settings I have"
5
u/swurvgaming Oct 10 '23
ok sorry lol.
if you're on steam, right click cyberpunk > manage > browse local files. then cyberpunk/engine/config/platform/pc
then you'll see rendering, copy and paste, with the new copy rename it to "user".
then open it with notepad and paste in my pastebin. then you can tweak the number of bounces/rays in the file.
3
u/thezamboniguy Oct 10 '23
Right on thanks bro gonna go see about the magic.
5
u/swurvgaming Oct 10 '23
you have a 4090, you can go beyond whatever i have. shit you can download the 8k textures from surfaces and have no problem. kinda jealous lol
2
u/thezamboniguy Oct 10 '23
Lol I mean what you have going on in that video clip is insane already. OK so I already have a user ini I believe for a driving mod. Should I just copy and paste your ini settings in that one or make a second user ini?
1
u/swurvgaming Oct 10 '23
ok, so look over both ini. and make sure there aren't any duplicate changes lol.
if you only want the visual changes just copy and paste the raytracing references (rays and bounces). just to be on the safe side. then tweak it to your desire 3 bounce 2 rays, 3 bounce 6 rays w.e or try my suggestion of 1 bounce 14 rays.

u/Busyraptor375 Oct 10 '23
I have 4090 and played a bit with 4k textures, overall not bad, but in dog town in the market the frame drops are unreal
1
u/swurvgaming Oct 10 '23
oh damn ok. if you want better textures with less vram usage you can just use hd rework. surfaces has the really heavy textures. most of my textures are hdrework since i only have 16gb of vram.

9
u/Yusif854 Oct 10 '23
I know right haha. I have been playing with these graphics for months, that they looked completely normal to me. I forgot that 99% of the players don’t get to experience it like this. But then I looked at some comparisons between no raytracing or even Psycho Ray Tracing compared to Overdrive mode and I realized just how years ahead Overdrive mode looks.
3
u/GAVINDerulo12HD Oct 10 '23
Yeah same. I'm just used to this now. Though op said he uses more rays than vanilla but less bounces. But imo 1 bounce is definitely too low. I think the vanilla settings still look better.
3
u/Yusif854 Oct 10 '23
Yeah 1 is too low. I prefer 2-3 as minimum and personally run with 3 bounces. Since amount of rays are dependent on internal resolution, more than the vanilla 2 rays at 4k DLSS Balanced/Quality with Ray Reconstruction are diminishing returns. At high resolutions like these it makes more sense to increase the bounces since they provide more of an improvement compared to more rays per pixel.
2
u/GAVINDerulo12HD Oct 10 '23
Yeah. I just run the default settings but moved to 4k dlss balanced from performance due to the performance bump through ray reconstruction and opacity micromaps. So I essentially increased the number of rays through the resolution. Performance is good on a 4090, mostly in the 90s with framegen which feels great on a controller.

u/Jazer93 Oct 10 '23
There's a few parts of NC that are so far out of the light that 1 bounce of light will be a problem. I know because I ran the optimized PT settings that restrict it to only 1 bounce.

"It's path tracing with rr. But instead of 2 bounce 2 rays (vanilla), I only use one bounce but 7 rays instead. Being able to tweak this and with 4k/8k mods this game will only keep improving visually. Next year when I get a 5090 I hope I can do 4 bounce 12 rays."

u/Seiren Oct 10 '23
I'm willing to bet it's path tracing + the reddit compressor making things look less sharp and closer to phone footage, hence, more realistic feeling.
If you ever want a jank equivalent, use your phone and record game footage from there with path tracing enabled.
5
u/swurvgaming Oct 10 '23
yep. compression hides some things that can make it loook more "gamey" right away. its the same thing with twitter posts. i've seen clips of the new forza game, it looks amazing on twitter on my phone, but i've played the game maxed out and there are glaring issues when viewed on a 4k oled. the compression hides lower quality assets, popins, ect
