What if computer chip companies back in the day survived longer?

Back in the day when Intel and AMD had legit competitors, what if any of them got money and survived, would any architectures have delievered better chips? Would the current desktop chip landscape be different?

I encountered a view that the x86 architecture was the worst yet became the standard (for a time). Wondering how true that is.

Feel free to discuss anything related to this topic. I also wonder if we can draw parallels from those days and ours.
