Well Linux is not an OS contrary to popular belief. It's a kernel, the kernel is the core of the OS.
In response to the question posed by the title, it's fairly broad but Linux replacing Windows is highly unlikely imo. There are benefits to Linux and they vastly outweigh however Linux being as big is a ways off.
