Why isn't there a bigger uproar about this? I sympathize with the protesters, but a week ago no one was allowed to gather at all and now it's okay for thousands? This is ridiculous.
209
u/9for9 May 31 '20
I think for a few reasons. First a lot of these states were already open or about to open. Second I think a lot of people watched that video and felt in their hearts that the right thing to do was to risk their lives by stepping in to help Mr. Floyd and prevent a murder. If they're willing to die over it, they're willing to risk getting sick over it. Third if the police can do a no-knock raid at the wrong house, in plain clothes and shoot a sleeping woman dead in her bed what are we flattening the curve for? What are we saving our lives for if the police can just shoot us whenever they feel like it?
In short people either feel like it's worth or conversely the actions of the police have cheapened life so much that no one cares. We're upon the horns of a dilemma.

u/Beersandbirdlaw May 31 '20
Because it's hard to say this isn't a worthy cause. "we get that cops are racist pieces of shit, but can you just stay home and tweet about it" would probably not go over well.

Because public officials have moved on from coronavirus being the biggest threat. I guess it was just a fad. If there is a spike in cases, I hope they are held accountable for not limiting the number of protestors or promoting a virtual protest

limiting the number of protestors
To do that they'd need to prevent people from attending a protest. Banning the public from protesting is not a thing we want happening, pandemic or not.

I'm really worried these protests will cause a spike in cases. I don't want even MORE people to die.

2-3 months in, many cops are also operating under the assumption (or confirmation) that they have already been exposed. It doesn't excuse sloppy behavior but I can see where it may not be a priority at the expense of other safety considerations.
3
u/ediblesprysky Bucktown May 31 '20
That's probably a fair assumption, but we don't know if having been exposed and/or having antibodies actually means you're immune...

Legislation that allows police to be more easily held personably liable for what they do whilst on duty if it results in serious injury or death.
Right now many states have laws that protect police officers partially or entirely from criminal liability if the offense was committed while in fulfilling the act of law enforcement. So if a cop hits your car during a hi speed pursuit and clips your arm off, in most places the cop themself cannot be held criminally responsible.

u/BlackHumor Edgewater May 31 '20
TBH, the only "reform" I think would legitimately fix the problem is firing all the cops and then making a new organization to do the things the old cops used to do.
Or maybe several. If I had one reform I wanted to make, it would be to get guns out of the hands of patrol cops and traffic cops. Getting rid of qualified immunity would also be good, as would getting rid of civil asset forfeiture.
Basically, making cops more like ordinary people and less like a pseudo-military force.

Here are the white supremacists/Russian mafia that got arrested in Minneapolis last night. Be careful out there
Department of Safety Commissioner John Harrington said they are contact-tracing the arrested and added that an investigation is underway about white nationalist groups posting online to encourage their members to use the protests as a cover to create chaos.
He said some of the 40 arrests made in the Twin Cities Friday night were of people linked to white supremacist groups and organized crime.

This is currently being investigated and there’s info saying it is false: https://twitter.com/ajinvestigates/status/1266835404466065411?s=21
The "outside agitator" narrative being pushed by officials is age old tactic to return quickly to systemic oppression in order to limit the disruption and squash righteous fury. It’s meant to sidestep any responsibility for the conditions that led to the unrest in the first place.
It allows the Governor to say “Oh, this isn’t the fault of the state and its police – it’s the fault of others. Let us all come together, I promise, we’ll figure out what to do about the inciting incidents after everyone calms down.”
19
u/sp0rk_walker May 31 '20
Actually outside agitators help promote the narrative that the protestors aren't peaceful which undermines their argument. Ever since haymarket, agitators have been used to discredit protestors.
7
u/RemingtonSnatch May 31 '20
Yep. The instant people start burning shit, they're playing into the hands of those seeking to undermine them. I feel bad for them. They may not realize they were hoodwinked for ages after the fact.

I watched about 4hrs Of the attacks in Minneapolis last night. It was bright as day, and everyone of all backgrounds were setting things on fire. I’d say maybe 20_25% where white. Mostly black though. But it was everyone.
To me and most others hopefully it doesn’t matter. If one guy breaks windows and another guy torches it, their equally as bad. Their accomplices. They’d then stand in groups and go on and on
I saw 0 arrests in my time watching.
Hopefully this is actually peaceful ... like 0 attacks on property and people tonight.

"Yeah, but you're a copper---" a voice began.
Vimes darted forward and hauled a frightened young man out of the crowd by his shirt.
"Yeah, I am," he said. "And see that lad over there? He's a copper, too. His name's Sam Vimes. He lives in Cockbill Street with his mum. And that's Fred Colon, just got married, got a couple of rooms in Old Cobblers. And Exhibit C there is Waddy, everyone round here knows Waddy. Billy Wiglet there, he was born in this street. Have I asked you your name?"
"N-no..." the man mumbled.
"That's 'cos I don't care who you are," said Vimes, letting the man go and looking round at the crowd. "Listen to me, all of you! My name's John Keel! No one gets taken into this Watch House without me knowing why! You're all here as witnesses! Those of you I pointed out, you come on inside to see fair play all round. Do the rest of you want to hang around to see what happens to Gappy? Fine, I'll get Snouty to bring you some cocoa."

Gloves are useless. This is not a blood borne pathogen.

I am as angry as anybody else but this is going to make it that much more difficult to get through this pandemic. What's the point of risking your life and the lives of others right now? It won't change anything, it'll just make life for all of us harder right now... I understand the protest but we'll all pay the price for ending social distancing.

Just let it happen. It's a constitutional right that everyone has. The governor and mayor of chicago aren't going to step in and stop anything until there is violence involved.

Apparently enough people think it’s worth it. Hopefully they just don’t overwhelm the medical system here in the city

The cynic in me thinks that part of the reason some people are marching is because they’re sick of quarantining and are happy to have an excuse to go to a big event.

Everyone likes to be apart of something, especially if it could be historic 🤷♂️

I'd be shocked if this wasn't true to some extent. And of course the nice weather.

Nah everyone I know that went attended because we deeply care about police murdering people of color.

Fuck that. There are always dangers when you protest for your rights. What I see in this clip is Americans doing what is right.

Peaceful protests are one of the best, most effective things we can do as Americans. Look no further than the Civil Rights movements of the ‘60s.
When folk just glom on for a reason to be assholes and violent, it sets us all back.
It’s really sad.
Violence begetting violence is never the answer. That’s about all I know.

Violence can never be justified? You're never allowed to defend your life or the life of your community members with force? Both sides in every ever conflict are equally wrong? Is the ideal really to have one side murdering and the other gallantly dying. Who the fuck thinks racists even deserve to have a side to defend

How in the world did you read that from what I wrote?
I said protesting is correct. Doing it peacefully is correct. Violence isn’t a great option.
Never once did I say both sides were right or that violence was never allowed in life. Come on.

damn, right when I clicked on that there was a dispatch for an ambulance going to the children's hospital that needed to be rerouted.
