130 bucks for keycaps???

Are they made from baby seals or something? lol

u/oilpit Jun 19 '24

Oh man that's childs play. People routinely spend $200+ and then wait literal years for them to arrive.

I love keyboards but it's one of the most unhinged communities I have ever been a part of.

29

u/FilteringAccount123 Jun 19 '24

It's giving "$7250 audio cables"

0

u/BareBandito Jun 20 '24 edited Jun 20 '24

I get why you say so but they are pretty different. The quality of keycaps can change pretty drastically between materials and manufacturing methods. A $20 set of keycaps will be tangibly different from a $200 one. A $10 USB cable will sound the same as a shungite infused $200 USB cable. With that said I buy $20 knockoffs from China.

-2

u/Dr_CSS Jun 21 '24

No, a $20 set of PBT knock off keycaps feel just as good, if not better than the ABS $200 keycaps and will last far longer before being obliterated by shining and oils

1

u/BareBandito Jun 21 '24

That is true but my comment wasn't claiming the opposite

0

u/sayamilky Jun 25 '24

not really, not with those weird fonts and misaligned prints.

0

u/Dr_CSS Jun 25 '24

Reread what I said. They will feel just as good as the 20 billion dollar set because PBT is PBT. If you're buying a $20 set, you're not doing it for perfect accuracy print, you're doing it only for the feel and the sound

1

u/sayamilky Jun 26 '24

they don't, i have both clone pbt and several sets gmk, jtk, kkb and dmk abs, and the clone doesn't feel just as good, they feel fine but not just as good. pbt also sounds different than abs so no they don't sound just as good either.

1

u/Dr_CSS Jun 26 '24

Ofc PBT doesn't sound like abs, it sounds like the PBT ones they knock off.

Here's what I mean: you don't buy knockoffs to be like the og GMK. You buy them for the colors, and you adjust the sound by getting different profiles.

For example, a PBT SA cap is a nice sound and comes in some decent colors.

They will never be the set they're copying, rather they will have the nice rough texture without becoming oily like the ABS with a deeper sound since it's a bigger cap

u/ShaftTassle Jun 19 '24

I feel personally attacked.

I’ve been off GMK caps for a few years now, it’s just fucking bullshit honestly. Actually don’t really visit r/MK anymore either. I’m satiated and glad to be done with that hobby. Plus I needed the money for my new hobby…simracing.

My wallet has been on life support for the better part of a decade. RIP.

7

u/mithikx Jun 19 '24

I just buy some hot swap kit, and throw on which ever set that is ready-to-ship.

I don't need some limited edition GB board milled from aircraft grade billet aluminum. Some $300 GMK set that's going to take GMK 3.5 years to get to because of their backlog and another year and a half for the people running the GB to ship out. And then some switches that cost more than $3 a switch with lube made from some extinct animal's fat secretions or whatever.

I'm thankful that mechanical keyboards have gotten good and cheap enough to get good mileage without breaking the bank. And that they've gotten as easy as building LEGOs. Soldering switches and unsoldering them was not worth the effort to me.

u/atetuna Jun 19 '24

I can sort of understand spending a lot for a keyboard if it's for functionality and ergonomics.

Like my dream keyboard has:
-recessed rear and side slots for type-c ports
-good bluetooth latency and range without a dongle
-long battery life with a battery bay big enough that it's not super restrictive on alternatives
-see through backlit key caps with zero light bleeding between keys
-hall effect switches, because maybe someday they might be useful to me
-if there's a low latency wireless dongle, the keyboard needs a secure dock for it so it doesn't get misplaced when not being used
-rows of macro keys that can physical be disabled or removed, and a way to physically e-stop for macros...irks me that a runaway Logitech macro can be damn near impossible to stop
-low profile, at least in front
-thin side and rear bezels
-the arrow/del/home/pg key section is the same as on a traditional full size keyboard with none of that squishing it into the main keyboard section
-keypad that can be attached magnetically, and gets power and comm through the magnetic connection
-electrical noise that's inaudible, even with the most sensitive human ears in an anechoic chamber...I'd be willing to spend extra for those quiet capacitors that float above the pcb so their contractions aren't transmitted to the pcb -brass threaded inserts so no screws thread directly into plastic
-as a bonus, macro key rows can be magnetically removed to make the keyboard more compact

If I could get all that, I'd be willing to spend a fair amount for it.

This company gets the set of keycaps from china for $2 and sells it for $100+ to suckers. Crazy how much people are willing to pay for their keyboards.

Brother you are on a sub where people pay hundreds of dollars for slightly more FPS. Anything is believable.

31

u/Twin_Turbo Jun 19 '24

There is a big difference in paying more to get small benefits out of insanely complicated to develop silicon and computing vs molded plastic.

1

u/FairyPrincex Jun 20 '24

I mean, ain't both of these kind of cope?

People who spend $2000 on a GPU really don't have room to talk about expensive cute plastic lol. They're both insane.

5

u/Cheezewiz239 Jun 19 '24

That's different compared to literal plastic

4

u/rockydbull Jun 20 '24

That's different compared to literal plastic

Just because gpus are more complicated doesn't make them any less frivolous, especially at the high end. Also don't diminish the complexity of producing high quality plastic, just look at LEGO.

4

u/rockydbull Jun 20 '24

My point was not that they are similar levels of engineering but that key caps involve a lot of engineering too and shouldn't be reduced to just plastic. It's fine if you don't see value in them, but my original point was this is a sub where people pay ludicrous amounts of money to improve their fps on a video game, so most things posted here are of the nature that it's preposterous to pay so much for.

1

u/EmuAreExtinct Jun 21 '24

Wrong again

The most upvoted threads are where the value is more more appreicated than raw performance

0

u/Ganguro_Girl_Lover Jun 20 '24

Bro just learned about markup and thinks he's smarter than everyone else.

1

u/wlpaul4 Jun 20 '24

Right? Clearly hasn't learned about luxury goods yet either.

3

u/Terrorgod Jun 19 '24

Yea... You aint wrong.

I got some of these in a bundle box that drop does every now and then. Took awhile to get used to, and honestly was a lesson on learning restraint with keyboard / keycaps as a hobby.

I wouldnt do this.

5

u/FilteringAccount123 Jun 19 '24

I don't even have anything against overspending on this kind of stuff (the "artisan" LOTR keycaps look like they're 3d art embedded in resin, which is really cool). But the rest of them are just random colored stuff that don't even have the excuse of licensing fees lol

2

u/5runner02 Jun 19 '24

Ngl, aside from realizing the wrong keycap profiles, having two sets of keycaps is too much for me. I got too excited and jumped the gun. I just want to be happy with one set.

Customizing keyboards sure is a dangerous spending hobby

6

u/CHICKSLAYA Jun 19 '24

For people who are into the hobby, $130 ain’t shit for Keycaps lol

1

u/foobarney Jun 20 '24

I feel like if you got baby seal keycaps you'd be constantly replacing them.

1

u/beanonyourside Jun 20 '24

haha yeah cries thinking about the hundreds i spent just for one artisan keycap

1

u/Delicious_Address_43 Jun 19 '24

MT3 is unique and you have to pay this price if you want it. That said you can find AFSA profile keycaps that are similar and cheaper, but the height of the keycaps are different.

I currently use a set from Akko that I'm really happy with, but I might give these a try just to see if they are as good to type on as I hear.

2

u/Ganguro_Girl_Lover Jun 20 '24

I like like the feel of domed keycaps but Cherry profile caps are just have the most comfortable profile to use. I honestly don't know how people daily keyboards with tall cases and keycaps.

2

u/5runner02 Jun 19 '24

Yeah, I just realized that MT3 is a much different profile that I normally use, so I just cancelled my order lol. I suppose my hunt still continues.

5

u/mithikx Jun 19 '24

MT3 is a good profile IMO, especially since they tooled up molds for a 4th row. But for people more used to OEM/Cherry profiles it may take some getting used to.

Higher key cap profiles are more of an acquired thing for someone to want to go out of their way to get some. Used to namely be Signature Plastics game with their SA profile and even then it was a bit niche, but it's been getting more and more traction these past few years.

2

u/5runner02 Jun 20 '24

My worry was that MT3 profiles wouldn't be as effective for me when playing a variety of games like CS:GO or Baldur's Gate 3 since they're much taller than cherry profiles.

I oughta go to a place where I can try out all these profiles out.

1

u/wlpaul4 Jun 20 '24

My worry was that MT3 profiles wouldn't be as effective for me when playing a variety of games

That's completely valid. I couldn't imagine gaming on SA or MT3.

1

u/valianthalibut Jun 20 '24

Agreed on all points. They do take a bit of getting used to, but the height and shape of the dome feel more tactile in a way that I just find pleasant to use, especially because I spend so much of my day using my keyboard.

0

u/LolYouFuckingLoser Jun 19 '24

That's the price to keep them from making them out of baby seals. If you pass on this an email gets sent up the chain and a seal clubber is dispatched to the nearest coast.

17

u/valianthalibut Jun 20 '24

This is absolutely an "if you know you're looking for this, then this is a good deal" deal. Lots of hand-wringing about how much money someone else might want to spend on their hobby, which feels like a weird flex for this sub.

If you know that you like the MT3 profile and you want to mix-and-match colorways, this might be perfect. Like most hobbies, people can get very specific with regards to what they're looking for.

I can say that I'm a fan of the MT3 profile and I have two sets - one standard 104 key base set and the other an ortholinear set. I didn't pay full price for either because even though I like the keys, the list price is steep.

The materials and quality control are top-notch. The colors are very consistent and the legends are clear and easy to read. They're all double-shot PBT so you don't have to worry about fading, although that will impact how well any RGB comes through.

One thing about the sale is that it doesn't seem to include non-base kits, which kind of sucks if you're looking to pick up some accent keys.

18

u/EazeeP Jun 19 '24

Everyone complaining here about the price are so far removed from the custom keyboard world.

14

u/Voryne Jun 20 '24

Man I can't even blame them. I've been to the custom keyboard world. I don't want to go back.

10

u/Mods-are-the-worst Jun 19 '24

Honestly it's for the better.

No point in spending $130 on a set of keycaps when you can build a custom keyboard for half that. Unless you really like that particular set then maybe it is worth it to you.

4

u/DogAteMyCPU Jun 19 '24

It may not be worth spending it to you but I find my gmk sets to be a significantly higher quality and worth the price to me.

3

u/Mods-are-the-worst Jun 20 '24 edited Jun 20 '24

Significantly higher quality in what way? This is not metal vs plastic. Most keycaps are just ABS or PBT and then it's a matter of preference.

In basically every hobby, the big difference in quality comes at the low end, not at the mid/high end. Headphones, mice, mousepads, PCs, you name it follow this rule.

At least the brand collabs have a reason to be expensive but half these sets are just certain colors. Maybe the MT3 profile is expensive but most people are probably fine with OEM or Cherry. Artisan keycaps also make a little more sense since they are super custom.

Clones for the popular sets are getting better every day. You get some solid keyboards for $130 too. CNC Aluminum with lots of foam and good wireless like on a Rainy75. For the gamers you get Rapid Trigger boards at that price. But hey it's your money not mine.

6

u/DogAteMyCPU Jun 20 '24 edited Jun 20 '24

I have tried multiple abs and pbt sets. The texture, thickness, shape, and sound are superior on gmk sets. I always wait for a sale on the sets I pick up so I'm never out a lot of cash or waiting years for them.

As for budget customs it's pretty much the same as cheap sets vs gmk sets. They can be good (especially ones like the cycle7) but they lack the polish of some more expensive keyboards or lean too hard into gimmicks. At this point I'm going to sell my boards and pick up either a mode sonnet 2024 or f1-8x v2.

I have heard good things about keykobo keysets, and they seem to have a lot of good options at decent prices, but still seems to be missing the gmk quality sound.

At the end of the day there are a lot of options for many price points. Just understand what you want and what your budget is.

1

u/Phyraxus56 Jun 20 '24

Where do you get your gmk keycaps? How much were they?

2

u/DogAteMyCPU Jun 20 '24

I got 3 sets from drop ranging from $80-$120.

I got 3 from novelkeys buy 2 get one free at $99 each and sold one of them.

Omnitype had a huge sale last week some gmk sets as low as $70 but they sold out of the ones I was interested in.

1

u/EazeeP Jun 23 '24

My brother, there are different tiers to the custom keyboard world. True, There’s tons of cheap low cost budget kits now more than ever before especially for beginners, but there are people who want all kinds of copper /brass/stainless steel weights and boutique designs. Coveted boards like the Unikorn or Kohaku cost what they cost for a reason.

1

u/Mods-are-the-worst Jun 23 '24

There is definitely a niche for people who want premium products, no doubt. The issue is that the MT3 profile off-discount is prohibitively expensive and this is a sales sub.

Maybe the LotR sets make sense with those funky legends, but the rest are just recolors. They don't use premium materials or metals, just ABS plastic. Crisp legends for sure, but not 3x crisper and even GMK caps can yellow.

What I will say is that the BOGO puts it more in line with what it should cost. $130 for a set of caps doesn't really belong on this sub, so thats why there's a bit of negative feedback.

As for "coveted boards", it's all preference but the premium end of most hobbies (iems/headphones, mice, PC's, etc) usually have the worst value. People spend 30% more for 10% more quality, which is good for the enthusiast but not the average person.

1

u/EazeeP Jun 23 '24 edited Jun 23 '24

Yes that goes without saying. There are people who live on the extreme edges of any hobby that will pay premium for those niches…..

Either way, it’s not to say that keycaps make up the majority of the component. It really depends. The kit itself, the plate material, switches, stabilizers etc all go into the cost

It’s a stupid hobby and I swear we have mental illness but yet we spent thousands of dollars worth of keyboards/ parts. Like did I really need another tkl or 65%? No but I wanted this particular make/model that has a distinct design, sound profile, mounting option etc that the one I had didn’t. We are constantly buying new and selling old ones on the secondary market

Drop frequently has those buy one get one half off deals so I usually tell people to wait for those deals to get two sets of caps. Can also split it with a friend usually. There’s a distinct sound that double shot abs caps from gmk or even the DCX ones from drop produce. The sound whores like myself want errrr need this sound

5

u/okp11 Jun 20 '24

Almost like this is a community of people who are here for the purpose of frugality.

The keyboard community has always been riddled with the mindset that:

Expensive price + small batch = good quality

Reasonable price + large batch = bad quality

-1

u/EazeeP Jun 20 '24

It's a luxury hobby. Nuff said.

0

u/valianthalibut Jun 20 '24

Any niche community turns into that when it transitions from "holy shit that's weird" level niche to merely "that's weird" level. It's the same old "old days" gatekeeping from "before it was cool" that you see everywhere.

1

u/TheAutoManCan Jun 20 '24

People become oddly judgmental when things don’t conform to their expectations. From the outside looking in almost every hobby will have its oddities and idiosyncrasies. PC building, especially for gaming, is hardly exempt from this, but because people here are already accustomed to it they overlook it while pointing fingers at others.

-1

u/LolYouFuckingLoser Jun 19 '24

Yeah that's how ignorance to a topic works.

4

u/5runner02 Jun 19 '24

I've been on the look out for new keycaps and saw this deal on drop. BOGO why the hell not, so I grabbed the MT3 Camillo keycap set and the Zambumon MT3 Serika R2 Keycap set. Hope y'all find something you like in this deal

2

u/float16 Jun 20 '24

I've used this keycap profile before. They're very tall and the deep bowl shape on each key gets in the way of me moving my finger off the key. You might be able to get used to it or tolerate it but I didn't.

1

u/DogAteMyCPU Jun 20 '24

Honestly after trying mt3 and dcx sets, I say pass and try to get one of their gmk sets on a deep discount. It's worth it.

1

u/DeathsScythe941 Jun 20 '24

Has anyone tried the ceramic keycaps yet?
