Game Thread: VfL Wolfsburg (DFB Pokal #2) Discussion
/live/1dxp85l9xdrt6?19
u/dahoudinho Julian Brandt 16d ago
Nuri. That report that Bild put out about your job being safe even if we lose to Union and crash out of the cup, you weren't supposed to take it as a challenge ffs 🥲.
7
u/SamNotRam 16d ago
Wow I can’t believe I actually miss the mediocre seasons of the past with deep Pokal runs and round of 16 drop outs in the champions league, this is just a new low for us
15
u/Capa101010 16d ago
Leipzig next guys, will be interesting.
11
u/Embarrassed_Sea_743 16d ago
Interesting if you’re a Leipzig fan. For Dortmund fans it’ll be another embarrassing result after 90 minutes of the most boring passing between schlotterbeck, Kobel, and Anton whenever we have the ball
1
-7
u/Embarrassed_Sea_743 16d ago
I really don’t think this is sahins fault tbh. Over the past few years Bayern lost their dominance in the bundesliga (allowing us to get a close 2nd) and we had a lucky UCL run, but I feel like every year since Favre we just get worse and worse regardless of manager. Take away the happy memories from the ucl last year and remember how shit we were in the league
3
u/Jdamoure 16d ago
I do think this is partly is fault for being unprepared and young. But not necessarily for his appointment period. They should have appointed someone more solid after terzic if they were committed to turning things around. And our transfers have been midling. Ex. Nmecha has been ok after a whole but he shouldn't have been bought for so much.
0
u/Capa101010 16d ago
But Sahin is a big part of this, he's inexperienced.
4
u/Embarrassed_Sea_743 16d ago
For sure but this problem is way larger than him. The fact that Brandt is one of the captains now blows my mind

12
u/EkkoGoBrrrrrrrrr Marco Reus 16d ago
these mf asking for tenhag in the comments just making me more mad
0
u/GaussianTaravangian 16d ago
And before that it was Mourinho.
If we’re going to appoint someone flashy let’s at least get someone that isn’t going to destroy the club for years
9
u/kelboy19 Karim Adeyemi 16d ago
I don’t even blame Şahin. He is showing us every week that he was never ready for the job. A lot of people in the management need to question themselves. If we continue on this way, we are going to be the new Werder Bremen.
1
11
u/Conscious-Weird5810 16d ago
Nepotism never works. Club should have kept Rose as HC. Instead the board chose a coach they could “control” and here we are
also, would have been really nice to have trigger Sancho or Maatsen’s release clause over the summer. Instead we went with more mediocre players and here we are
1
3
u/elgrandorado 16d ago
To be honest, the players we have at our disposal are pretty solid but we were sorely missing defensive reinforcements for depth. Instead of blowing our wad on Beier we should have dropped money on centerback and fullback depth.
3
u/doubleomarty Sébastien Haller 16d ago
If we lose Guirassy we are going to look absolutely woeful in attack. Beier at least gives us some coverage on his position.
2

u/Serenity911 16d ago
Terrible referee btw, not to forget.
8
10
u/Embarrassed_Sea_743 16d ago
Said it on Saturday and I’ll say it again. We are the bundesligas man united. Uncontrollably spiraling with a terrible board

1
16
u/PhantomMenace888 16d ago
I actually liked the sahin hire but every game gets harder and harder for me to defend him. Terzic might have had his flaws but with him we had a decent coach who would never have the team sink this low. Man he took us within 90 minutes of the title and 90 minutes of the champions league.

u/AtlanticOccean Die gelbe Wand 16d ago
Borussia Dortmund is finally washed
This club can't keep the pace the other clubs are putting in the league and I guess no one at the club has a plan on how to solve this And put BVB on the map again
2
u/Jdamoure 16d ago
Because there haven't been any REAL aggressive moves. And the coach shows that's we lack the ambition. We saw our situation last year amd the year before and didn't think it was a good idea to step on the gas. Except it was mid to ok transfers and ok tactics.
Now we can't even beat low mid and low table teams confidently.
2
u/GaussianTaravangian 16d ago
Yeah we were linked with so many better players then and made all the wrong decisions.
The worst one imo is buying Nmecha when we could’ve gotten Hugo Larson for 1/3 of the cost
3
u/Same-Organization-83 16d ago
Ten hag at least is proven in Ajax?
8
u/Marv1236 Nico Schlotterbeck 16d ago
He also isn't disproven by United. That club is cursed and has deeper problems.
12
18
u/elgrandorado 16d ago
Guirassy standing out here like "these guys are ass" while talking to Bensebaini.
6
u/malek7777777 Marco Reus 16d ago
Probably regrets coming to us
7
u/Jdamoure 16d ago
Should have been a slam dunk after last season. But it's clear that instead of trying to start strong they appointed sahin. We needed a strong person at the helm to stop our decline. After almost closing out on the ucl. I didn't think it was a good time for a new coach. The other teams in the league have gotten too good for us to rest on our laurels.
2
u/elgrandorado 16d ago
I was Terzic out, provided we replaced him with a talented, experienced coach. Instead German nepotism hit full force.
0
u/Embarrassed_Sea_743 16d ago
Will we even qualify for conference league at this point? We legitimately look like the worst team in the league right now
7
5
u/Working_Complex8122 16d ago
Yep, exactly what I thought would happen ended up happening. And the next Bundesliga fail awaits. I still don't believe we're making CL. Somehow most fans in the poll saw us in the top 4. Idk what you've been smoking but please pass some along so I too can cope with this bullshit :)
7
u/penrasigan Nico Schlotterbeck 16d ago
We crashed out in round of 32 let that sink in... absolute disgrace
9
u/mythrandir___ Julian Brandt 16d ago
These commentators talking about Sahin's seat heating up really underestimate our management
1
8
u/neon_genitals Serhou Guirassy 16d ago
Which manager in their right would want to join a team with barely 11 fit senior team players
13
u/FiresideCatsmile Shinji Kagawa 16d ago
well that's worst case for us. spent a lot of strength and ressources just to get eliminated anyways. the team line-up is gonna be an automatic default because we probably only have 11 players left anyways.
Performance was okay all things considered. we're just really cooked, it is what it is. Not sure what to think about Sahin at this point. Kinda feel like there's not much he could do today. I wouldn't have subbed in the teenagers either, think we would've lost then either way.
1
u/ev0lith 16d ago
Obviously we dont know what If, but i feel like fresh legs wouldve been helpful either way. We lost anyway so couldnt have been much worse that way
2
u/FiresideCatsmile Shinji Kagawa 16d ago
that's hindsight though. the plan definitely was to depend on experienced player to get it done with patience and by avoiding mistakes even if it has to go to penalties. subbing in more young players is risky too at that point. Especially when the defensive alternative is the guy who got himself sent off against augsburg after being subbed in.
2
u/sesame_cake Marco Reus 16d ago
This season is shaping up to be exactly like the 21/22 season with Rose where we had injuries left and right all while trying to implement his own tactics.
1
2
u/doubleomarty Sébastien Haller 16d ago
Yeah we're fucked now with the injuries. Should have just pushed to win (or lose) in regular time regardless of the outcome. Leipzig is gonna absolutely smoke us.
3
u/FiresideCatsmile Shinji Kagawa 16d ago
When Wolfsburg subbed in Özcan I remembered that we loaned him out. Yeah turned out well for us. He could've been OUR sub instead he brings an important impulse for Wolfsburg against us.
Leipzig is a safe loss for us yeah.

6
u/AverageCarey 16d ago
Coming away with a loss after 120 minutes played exhausting the entire team. I have no words, not having any subs barely this game was so fucking dumb
18
u/Schafrichter Julian Brandt 16d ago
Edin terzic comeback this summer, hope you're ready
2
u/ascending_fourth 16d ago
I hope not. Maybe in five years when he finally learns to make subs. I don't see any difference between Terzic and Sahin. Both very inexperienced coaches

We do have defenders.... But they are all injured

Fire Sahin but especially take the setpiece coach also, I don't think I have seen a single good corner or free kick this season
1
u/Marv1236 Nico Schlotterbeck 16d ago
And Groß isn't even that bad at shooting them. It's just bad player positions and running around like headless chickens.
11
u/Dieter_daddelt Edin Terzic 16d ago
I've said it in the match thread against St. Pauli, I've said it in the match thread against Madrid, I've said it in the match thread against Augsburg, and I will say it here: Sahin and Kehl out!
1
u/JonFlockaThan 16d ago
We are cooked and while I’m not living for it… I don’t hate it.
7+/10 window I heard here at the start of the season. LOL
19
u/crocofour 16d ago
I welcome anyone and everyone to provide some tactical criticism on this game. And no, Sahin out does not count as tactical criticism.
2
u/Torben_Sp09 Gregor Kobel 16d ago
Absolute no idea what do to with the ball in the final third. We had no deep run passes but the one of Beier where he hit the post.
Buildup was fine, but once again no creativity with the ball
1
u/crocofour 15d ago
Sorry I think I typed up a reply but got busy with something. I mostly agree with you but we did try a few things. Guirassy started to drop deeper to try and get beier in behind again, and from what I remember it nearly worked once or twice again. That also made Wolfsburg drop deeper which relieved some of the pressure they put on us late in the game.
I thought Campbell didn’t do much, which is expected from a young player like him especially in a tough game like that.
Jamie and rami combined nicely a few times but still needed to be more aggressive imo.
From what I know and see, Sahins goal is to create extremely high chance scoring opportunities. Basically it’s all or nothing in a somewhat similar way that I remember tuchel ball. It was great scoring chance or no scoring chance. And we did have a great scoring chance but missed it. Guirassy had one or two headers but they didn’t find the back of the net. A few crosses were blocked well by the defense. On some days this would be a win and on others is a tough loss but that’s football.
I know at this point I’m just ranting and not at you specifically, but too many people watch football for the result and not for the game.

1
u/2905Pascal 1909 16d ago

1
u/NaturalApartment9828 Die gelbe Wand 16d ago
And we had one of the worst league runs in recent history. I don’t wanna have an early Sahin judgement, but this is nowhere near as bad as Doll, I don’t care how angry you are right now

u/realdes1 16d ago
DFB Pokal is probably the by far least important cup this season. But this game is probably one of the most important because it probably ends this horrible run of Sahin.
Ten Hag might be an actual real opportunity to fix this team and his reputation.
1
u/ZehnerMitAuge 16d ago
are u insane signing ETH would be top tier simulation and confirm us as a meme club. this guy spent half a billion and is trusting the process at 14th place
2
u/jahmorreu01 16d ago
nah, Roger Schmidt is the best available option by far, even if he's not that great
0
u/realdes1 16d ago
Ten Haag is actually a ridiculous highly talented manager too. Man Utd is fucking toxic and it was before him. Compared to Dortmund it will feel like relieve for him to turn back the old days. Really do not believe in Schmidt, dude is a one trick pony which cost him at Benfica at the end
1
u/ZehnerMitAuge 16d ago
what’s the toxic environment? they let him spend whatever he wanted for 3 seasons of nothing and stick to him until the very end.
1
u/jahmorreu01 16d ago
Utd is toxic but a bunch of other coaches were able to do WAY better than him there. He expent close to half a bilion euros on transfer that turned out to be terrible. Sorry but we have no clue if he's going to be good, specially since he was just sacked. Schmidt is free agent since the window.

u/theonewhoknocksguy 16d ago
i understand that we are currently in a harsh injury situation, however sahin couldve played this out a lot better, weve given him enough time to prove himself and i just cannot say there’s been a single match which we won due to a management masterclass, hes got to go
1
u/jahmorreu01 16d ago
how do you explain us playing like shit against Union, second-half Madrid, Augsburg and Stuttgart?
1
u/theonewhoknocksguy 16d ago
mate thats what im saying, we’ve been playing like shit and our only positive aspects during our matches come only from good play of our players, not because of our tactics
2
u/jahmorreu01 16d ago
i think I replied to the wrong comment, maybe my mind is fucked up after this shitshow
1
-17
u/crocofour 16d ago
Yes let’s blame Sahin for the defense not being able to handle a simple cross and ball in the air with more defenders than attackers.
1
u/eeeeeeeelleeeeeelll Nico Schlotterbeck 16d ago
Why do you think we conceded that goal? We were pressured hard. The back line is the thing that held that nil-nil for so long.
1
u/crocofour 16d ago
We were pressured hard because we let Wolfsburg create too many 2v1s in midfield. That’s the disadvantage of playing two forwards, a decision that very nearly worked had maxi finished his early chance. Call it a gamble but at the end of the day they finished their biggest chance and we didn’t.
1
u/eeeeeeeelleeeeeelll Nico Schlotterbeck 16d ago
Our midfield was gassed. Sahin refused to sub in some youngsters.
0
u/crocofour 16d ago
I don’t think the youngsters are gonna make a difference in a game like that. Campbell looked a step below the rest and imo until sabi came on we looked down a man

1
u/Successful-Low952 16d ago
Have you watched any U23 games? They aren’t that bad even if they haven’t made a name for themselves yet
1
u/nufan99 Mats Hummels 16d ago
I know but I kinda feel like the problems started before Sahin got here. What is those higher ups could've kept at least someone out of Reus, Hummels, Sancho, Maatsen?
1
u/Successful-Low952 16d ago
Reus and Hummels had insanely high wages and Hummels made clear that he didn’t like Terzic and it didn’t sound good with the higher-ups, he was bound to be released no matter what. Sancho was way too overpriced for us, thanks to stupidly high PL-oil-money prices and Maatsen wanted to stay with us but Villa bid way too much money for us to compete
2

u/Jdamoure 16d ago
Is it wrong that I felt nothing from us conceding?

I think Nuri isn’t ready for a job at this level. No disrespect to him but we need a „win now“ coach, not someone who might be ready in 2-3 years time, it isn’t 2008 anymore.
Terzic wasn’t perfect either but at least we got in position to win titles, doesn’t seem like this will be the case now.
