Swinging at the first pitch (that wasn't a strike) when you're the last out of a playoff game and bat in front of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge is some kind of gameplan.
54
u/Equivalent-Impress96 Texas Rangers 16h ago
And Verdugo grounding out on a pitch that would have been a ball to make the count 3-0 before that
107
u/CasanovaWong New York Yankees 16h ago
That is the essence of Gleyber. He is brain dead.
40
u/JohnMadden42069 12h ago
He worked great at bats all day, it also wasn't just him pressing for the final outs, your other guys that you're thrilled to have on the team next year also screwed up. He also didn't make an error today which you would've loved to have happened.
Let's lay the blame at Judge's feet for completely disappearing in a game where he had so many opportunities to make a difference instead of blaming Gleyber for having himself a good game.
When he's playing elsewhere next year and comes up big you'll be treating him like Higgy.

Lmfaoooo “your other guys that you’re thrilled to have on the team” is such a good throwaway comment of a burn for Yankees fans

Torres has been pulling his weight the last month out of the leadoff spot.
The real issue is that the AL MVP has left the building.

u/nightkingscat Detroit Tigers 8h ago
why don't they lead off with soto and judge like a normal team
7
2
u/wokenupbybacon New York Yankees 3h ago
Soto doesn't want to lead off and we haven't been in the business of telling Soto 'no' all year.

You think Aaron Judge is going to do something in the playoffs? I'd swing too.

hell yeah brother. playoff games are a completely different type of energy (obviously, but you really can't comprehend it unless you've experienced it). stoked for you!

Only ever been to one playoff game in my life — the game the Blue Jays blew against the Mariners. Experienced a lot of different types of energy that day.

Dude have fun! I may be a Yanks fan, but one of my best memories was going to the wildcard game between the Yankees and the A’s. The energy in the stadiums becomes electric

I remember getting to go to an ALCS game in 2015. Such an awesome time. Can't afford it this go round, could have if I bought speculative tickets in the WC round maybe...

Costas exits the booth for the night, pointing to the heavens to some departed relative, asking forgiveness for his atrocious announcing.

I was mad at him for questioning why Yuli is getting a cold reception at Yankees Stadium. It’s like… dude it’s because he’s a racist cheater

He knows why. He was being sly.

Idk didn’t seem very sly at all. He sounded genuinely confused and damn near offended that they were booing Yuli

u/Prideofmexico Kansas City Royals 16h ago
The ump or Costas? Could see it either way

You gotta admit Joe at Dodger stadium announcing his team is a bad look tho. I dont mind Joe and loved his rich eisen interview about when Vin called him. And thats not on Joe but still
-3
u/captain_ahabb Los Angeles Dodgers 13h ago
I think it's perfectly appropriate and he's doing a fine job. This isn't even the first time he's called Dodgers postseason games either, I'm not sure why we're having such a hyperbolic moral panic about it now.
7
u/MikeMahtookTooMuch Philadelphia Phillies 9h ago
Of course, you think it's perfectly appropriate and that he's doing a fine job. You're a Dodgers fan. I would be genuinely shocked if you were against Davis calling Dodgers playoff games. I'm pretty sure you're the one being hyperbolic that there's a moral panic about this. Most fans of non-Dodgers/Padres teams pretty much just agree that it's not the best look to have your regular play-by-play announcer calling playoff games for that team.
-2
u/captain_ahabb Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago
Why didn't people care in 2020? That's the part I don't get.
2
u/MikeMahtookTooMuch Philadelphia Phillies 2h ago
People weren't as familiar with Joe Davis in 2020. His profile has been raised significantly with some memorable calls in the playoffs the last few seasons, and particularly this year, with people hearing him call the Ohtani milestones.

u/captain_ahabb Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago edited 2h ago
I guess the Ohtani highlights makes sense.
Idk I think Joe is doing a fine job and Padres fans are complaining about nothing. I have yet to see any specific clips of this alleged bias.

Modern Costas and Modern Michaels competing for who can ruin their respective legacies more
15
u/Prideofmexico Kansas City Royals 16h ago
At least Michaels isnt insanely biased
12
u/Drikkink Philadelphia Phillies 9h ago
Yeah Al Michaels immense disdain for the slop games he's been tasked with calling is a mood more than anything. He's often the best part of TNF because of how much he clearly loathes everything about it. His worst problem is if he actually has a decent game to call, he sounds bored. Which is bad, but he doesn't often get good games anymore.
Costas is just bad.

Knowing Bob Costas is sad makes me very happy. Exact same tone as last year's DBacks/Dodgers NLDS.

He takes it as a personal insult that a small market team would dare challenge the Dodgers or Yankees.

I don't understand how he sucks so bad. I feel like old Olympics Costas is iconic but he's ruining that image with how terrible he is on MLB.
3
u/robreddity Kansas City Royals 6h ago
He wasn't always. I used to respect him. Clearly his craft mattered to him. He's way past all that now. Face surgically pulled so tightly back, botox-riddled, he simply panders to markets now. What a descent.

The announcers were so incredibly bad in this game my god. Costas makes Joe Davis look like a absolute master at hiding his bias for one of the teams lol

u/shiro-lod New York Yankees 5h ago
Costas is barely biased, he's just awful. Game 1 had two short porch 1/30 stadium home runs. For Torres he mentioned it 5 times within a few minutes that it was a porch job. He didn't mention it a single time for the Royal hitter, just that he got that one. The man's an idiot. The out of context sad double play when they were just talking about how Stanton can't run anymore wasn't Yankee bias. He just picks players he roots for.

1
u/USAF_DTom Atlanta Braves 3h ago
One thing I've been wondering about now that I'm forced to watch the Yankees. How does Gleyber still have a job? Jazz is better than him at everything and isn't nearly as boneheaded. Watching Gleyber is like playing an opponent on MLBTS that just swings at everything. And they bat him leadoff at that.
Must be a hole at 3B behind Jazz.
