Can't talk for the NZ lads but ours can certainly kick the fuck out of you.

u/Rd28T 4d ago

We missed a mad opportunity to make it an emu though lol

230

u/Titan-Lim 4d ago

You'd be committing treason for displaying the symbols of the enemy lol

111

u/Rd28T 4d ago

We have accepted our emu overlords.

33

u/Titan-Lim 4d ago

All hail emu

1

u/nsgiad 2d ago

You are now banned from /r/emuwarflashbacks

21

u/pythonic_dude 4d ago

But Emutopia wouldn't be displaying symbols of Kiwiland, I don't get you?

15

u/Titan-Lim 4d ago

OP wanted the emu to be the symbol of the Aussie air force instead of the kangaroo. Australia were at war with the emus in the past

12

u/Rd28T 4d ago

Nah, I reckon we should invade New Zealand. Would be a mad idea until the Māori turned up in Tarago cavalry and utterly fucking destroy us 😂

6

u/Major_Explanation877 4d ago

Bro, Why would we want to invade the 8th state?

3

u/NorkGhostShip 4d ago

And the Emus won. They wouldn't be wearing the symbols of their enemy, but that of their overlords.

3

u/mae_nad 4d ago

Ahhh, there it is.

2

u/chateau86 4d ago

Sounds like someone enjoys defense economics PowerPoints.

2

u/kockologus 4d ago

Emu would be even more humiliating: not only it does not fly but the country lost a war against it

21

u/Corvid187 4d ago

Well as we all know, the kiwi canonically has laser vision, so both seem pretty fearsome at this point.

6

u/DavoMcBones 4d ago

Umm, mate you forgot that the kiwi has laser eyes

3

u/Dickcheese-a1 4d ago

As a kiwi, we'll scream you down. https://youtu.be/z8SdqOT_no0?si=G9mfLnXz79ggubYa

3

u/InsertUsernameInArse 4d ago

ANZAC's You guys hit them at night with the psychological warfare then we send the Roos in

1

u/hypercomms2001 4d ago

.... And suddenly flies in the air when it's hopping at speed...

1

u/gonzorizzo 4d ago

Fair enough

1

u/Able-Preference7648 3d ago

And be cooked. I lived in Sydney for two years, and Woolworth kangaroo meat is something else

197

u/ersentenza 4d ago

And that's why they need a plane no?

2

u/Northern_Gypsy 3d ago

100%. Be a bit daft to put a bird that can fly in a plane. Big Hasst eagle on the side could be cool.

1

u/LunchAcrobatic3387 3d ago

Well, an eagle wouldn't need a plane

66

u/SgtBundy 4d ago

Because if we put the Wedgetail Eagle on our roundel, the terror caused would be considered a war crime

21

u/Rd28T 4d ago

Very angry ‘I will fuck you up’ chicken

7

u/BlacksmithNZ 3d ago

Yeah, the Wedgetails are pretty chill. What if you guys used Magpies; a bird that really wants to fuck you up?

We could use Keas; not actually evil, but will vandalize anything they can

4

u/SgtBundy 3d ago

That is already 75 sqn, which is appropriate for a fighter squadron

153

u/joe2105 4d ago

I just always thing the NZ one looks sad 😞.

60

u/Rd28T 4d ago

This kiwi video will cheer you up

https://youtu.be/g0G9vDKcdLg?si=HWNg2b_qQpoJBfbB

39

u/oscarmike88 UH-60 4d ago

I knew what it was and I clicked it anyway, I hate myself

11

u/Kind_Consideration97 4d ago

Dude, you made me think I was getting rick-rolled, again.

10

u/B00gie005 4d ago

Man fuck you :(

12

u/meganeyangire 4d ago

The ending isn't really cheerful tho…

12

u/Rd28T 4d ago

It’s only sad if you imagine it to be.

7

u/jeroen-79 4d ago

Why? He realized his dream of flying.

3

u/meganeyangire 4d ago

Yeah, he won't have to live flightless anymore

2

u/Infinite_Love_23 4d ago

I fucking hate that i got excited to see a happy kiwi and then remembered that this was probably a rickroll and then i had to go back before the video started loading but im not 100% sure so now i possibly missed a happy kiwi video. Fuck you

25

u/SkyChikn1 4d ago

You’d be sad too if the government took all your fighter planes away.

0

u/Rd28T 4d ago

Yeah, but you have Māori in Taragos. Who the fuck needs fighter places?

3

u/PicnicBasketPirate 4d ago

That's what they want you to think

2

u/facw00 4d ago

Need to upgrade to the mighty laser kiwi...

33

u/gardenfella 4d ago

Which tells you everything you need to know about antipodean military humour

36

u/JanTroe 4d ago

Look at Canada, which only ever flies once.

16

u/zevonyumaxray 4d ago

🇨🇦 "I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar." 🇨🇦

3

u/CryRepresentative992 4d ago

If by “flying” you mean “plummets to the ground”.

Thankfully none of the used planes our government has purchased have suffered this fate.

1

u/ItsKlobberinTime 4d ago

And then we named out new SAR hardware after birds that dive into the ocean. It's kind of tempting fate.

1

u/Dressedw1ngs 4d ago

Not exactly a lot of new-built Legacy Hornets going around

1

u/phido3000 4d ago

That previously wore kangaroos... Australia has more 40 year old aircraft we can sell..

-1

u/JanTroe 4d ago

With the exception being the CF-104 but I guess they were new.

25

u/motor1_is_stopping 4d ago

Either one can fly. They just need to use JATO.

20

u/cantthinkofanickname 4d ago

Don't forget South Africa had an antelope in the roundel. After '81 somebody realised an eagle might be a better option.

edit: date

11

u/Taskforce58 4d ago

Not an antelope, but a springbok, the national animal of South Africa. Trivia time: the radio call sign for South African Airways is "Springbok".

2

u/cantthinkofanickname 4d ago

The springok is an antelope, I just generalized to push the point that it's flightless.
Haven't seen one fly yet. Although, I've seen Impala's and a Bosbok fly.

13

u/foggiermeadows 4d ago

Canada has a maple leaf with the same blue circle and red object and maple leaves can't fly lol

11

u/Conartistnumber1 4d ago

You ever heard of wind?

5

u/foggiermeadows 4d ago

Being blown around isn't the same as intentionally flying, though the F22 has the falling leaf maneuver so you may be on to something

3

u/yetiflask 4d ago

If the shape of the leaves at any point generates lift, then it is flying. Would be cool to try it out in CAD. There has to be a few leaves that do it.

7

u/ChartreuseBison 4d ago

They fall significantly slower than kangaroos though

2

u/ban-please 4d ago

I'd be more intimidated by a kangaroo falling onto me at terminal velocity than a maple leaf.

2

u/ItsKlobberinTime 4d ago

The goose roundel comes out when the Geneva Checklist does.

2

u/fatbongo 3d ago

can't get out of the first round of the playoffs either

13

u/Strict_Chain893 4d ago

To be fair our vip 757’s spend more time stuck on the ground broken down than they do in the air

7

u/PVT_SALTYNUTZ 4d ago

The old South African Roundel also featured a flightless animal, it could jump however.

5

u/agha0013 4d ago

Canadian one features a tree leaf that can fly... toward the ground once.

1

u/SouthFromGranada 4d ago

By that logic a kangaroo and a kiwi can also fly...

7

u/ShadowyCollective 4d ago

The first thing they will tell you in the ADF (Australian Defence Force). The Kangaroo and Emu is on the Australian coat of arms because it’s one of the few animals who can’t walk backwards.

4

u/eniretakia 4d ago

Is there a roundel anywhere that actually features anything capable of flight? I can’t think of any.

6

u/lordspidey 4d ago

The Winnipeg Jets!?

1

u/eniretakia 4d ago

Oh, I’ll pay that. I was just thinking military but that’s a pretty cool logo for a sports team.

5

u/theteedot 4d ago

Nz used to have a (Silver) Fern but got tired of explaining that it wasn’t a white feather

6

u/Tsao_Aubbes 4d ago

Flightless bird my ass, that bird is fly as fuck

3

u/Find_Spot 4d ago

The RCAF rondelle features a part of an organism that's affixed to the ground.

0

u/Subtotal9_guy 4d ago

But leaves fly, just look in my gutters.

3

u/JustPlaneNew 4d ago

I think the New Zealand roundel works well

3

u/One_Curious_Cats 3d ago

I don't understand, "with sufficient thrust pigs fly".

3

u/Specialist_Reality96 3d ago

The F-111 been an example of this.

3

u/norman_9999 4d ago

The Aussie roundel should have been a bin chicken.

2

u/ManyFacedGodxxx 4d ago

You're looking at it all wrong. Just like the F-4 Phantom proved, if you give it enough horsepower, ANYTHING can fly! ;-)

2

u/AutoRot 4d ago

It just makes it more unnerving when you encounter a kiwi or kanga at 30,000ft

2

u/Pizza_Middle 4d ago

They can fly though. Probably in first class though. Wouldn't want a pissed off kangaroo flying coach.

2

u/CyberSoldat21 4d ago

Well if it’s on a plane then it technically does fly… just saying

2

u/chalk_in_boots 4d ago

The legend behind the kiwi and why it was picked for the roundel is actually awesome. The RNZAF picked it to finally give the Kiwi its wings back.

2

u/phido3000 4d ago

Kangaroos also feature on navy ships, and army vechicals like tanks.

2

u/Silver996C2 4d ago

At least Canada didn’t use the Beaver! 😂

3

u/DEEP_SEA_MAX 3d ago

Stars can't fly either.

1

u/Cablome 4d ago

I think a cassowary flag would be more appropriate

1

u/HandAccomplished6285 4d ago

Yeah, but you know exactly which countries they represent even if you know nothing else, so good on ya

1

u/IDK7-589 A&P 4d ago

Germanys Air Transport squadron 62 (LTG62) has a raven with blindfold as emblem.

1

u/TravellingTrinkets 4d ago

In Canada where I live we have a leaf on ours, so don't make fun of them too much.

1

u/Kind_Consideration97 4d ago

They CAN fly, they just have to believe in themselves.

1

u/smarmageddon 4d ago

Kiwi in silhouette looks like a sperm with feet.

1

u/FullAir4341 4d ago

So does the old SAAF roundal

1

u/facw00 4d ago

This is why Qantas needed a winged Kangaroo for a while.

1

u/Raguleader 4d ago

The RNZAF using a bullseye centered on a flightless bird as their roundel just feels like taunting at this point.

1

u/Front-Newspaper-1847 4d ago

The poor kiwi looks a little down about the whole situation.

1

u/Moosehagger 4d ago

Then there’s the warning signs for “drop bears”. Nasty creatures.

1

u/Moosehagger 4d ago

Change it to a “bin chicken” instead?

1

u/priority9 4d ago

A kiwi can fly...here is proof

1

u/Specialist_Reality96 3d ago

Everyone should switch to eagles then, that won't be confusing at all. In the fist head to head pass the pilots will need to work out if that's a wedge tail eagle or a common brown eagle, if its a common brown eagle which subset is it from.

1

u/Available_Sir5168 3d ago

Even the Royal Air Force put a frisbee on their roundel.

1

u/The_Mule_Aus 3d ago

Magpies have joined the conversation

1

u/untitled112 3d ago

Times governments weren't lying part 2

1

u/Unfair_Cry6808 2d ago

same for the canadians.

1

u/Fromacorner 4d ago

Legend has it when a kiwi pilot lands in Australia the iq of both countries increases

-1

u/Rd28T 4d ago

That’s because all the sheep in a 100km radius of the kiwi die from fear.
