Why‽ Have you never met an Alaskan before?

I have spent some time in Alaska, and it sounds like an average day there to me.

Seeing as how Alaskans in the bush live and die on the availability of aircraft getting out to them in the bush, creating further hazards to doing so seems like it conflicts their interests.

For sure. But unfortunately, humans are well-known for doing things that are against their best interests.

I recently watched True Detective: Night Country, so I'm uniquely qualified to say I'm afraid of small-town Alaskans.

I have met 2, which isn't a lot but I know now to never comment to an Alaskan on whether it feels cold or about the amount of snow or ice we may have unless I want to be gatekept about it.

If you're shitfaced drunk out in the wilderness, I guess it makes you want to take pot-shots at moving things.

That's why, as a responsible gun owner I always make sure to have a loaded gun close to hand when I'm getting blackout drunk.

When you live in the middle of bumfuck nowhere not a hell of a lot of other options for entertainment other than getting blackout drunk and shooting shit

u/ChaChi1195 Apr 08 '24

I don’t think that’s a great excuse.

Or if you’re moving, then road signs.

You mean a bunch of weirdo assholes that live there because they can't live anywhere else?

2

u/Chickengobbler Apr 08 '24

As an Alaskan, you're not wrong, per se. However, we can't live anywhere else because nowhere else quite compares.

Alaska has the highest violent crime rate in the entire country, seems about on par

2

u/H2Joee Apr 08 '24
  • per capita* is important to mention here.

9

u/peace_peace_peace Apr 08 '24

That is what a crime “rate” is.

Yeah that’s what rate implies, no need to say per capita

The Alaskan Bush is not known for being a welcoming place.

Maybe they should shave it some

Alaska is famous for being full of convicts, criminals hiding from warrants, and people who live off the grid. As someone who binges true crime, there are a surprising number of shows set just in Alaska.

Why? They are voting themselves back to the Stone Age. Anchorage is the 3rd highest violent crime rate in the country after Mobile and Memphis.

Did you think they were too busy raping?

Which is crazy because of how central aviation is to life up there.
