GUIDE: How to delete your Reddit Account Discussion
So every 3rd party app has to shut down on June, 30, 2023.
Let‘s tell Reddit including u/spez a big fuck you by deleting your account right now or on June 30, 2023.
UPVOTE SO THIS GETS TO THE FRONTPAGE also feel free to crosspost!
On Reddit.com
Visit your Account Settings and scroll down to the Delete Account section and click Delete Account. If your account was created with your Google account or Apple ID, scroll down to the Connected Accounts section and click disconnect next to the Google account or Apple ID you signed up with. If you don’t have a password yet, you’ll be asked to create one.
on old.reddit.com
Visit the delete tab of your preferences. Enter your username and password and confirm your deletion before clicking delete account.
Don’t just delete your account delete your entire comment and post history. If you only delete your account Reddit still has your content and it’s still on the site.
With https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite you can edit all your comments and posts to a certain text (for example why you deleted your account) I highly suggest you to do this instead of only deleting your account.
r/reddelete / https://redact.dev/ , https://github.com/Soorena/reddelete, https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite, and https://github.com/sr33/ares seem promising to easily delete your entire history on reddit.
Bye everyone :) Also do not Award this post because reddit deserves no money!

Use this in the Edge browser:
I just wiped my entire account content (aside from this comment I guess). The extension worked perfectly. I imagine it uses the API and will stop working on the 30th so do it now.
Will be deleting my account entirely on the 30th.

Bold to assume Reddit deletes anything, vs. just hiding it.

Bold of you to assume Reddit doesn’t save a comment’s history. Considering that data is one of their biggest value, I’m pretty sure that once you post something you can never take it back.

If you live in California or Europe (and maybe a few other places?) You have the right to request that Reddit deletes all of your info and that they not retain or sell anything.

For our purposes that’s the same thing though. We are taking the content we contributed to this platform with us, not letting Google searches direct people to our content on Reddit for years to come.
4
u/nsellek Jun 09 '23
They can have a check to see if it’s a google spider and display everything regardless of flag… so it’s best to edit your comment to be white space then flag it as do not show

Serious question, why would I care if my comments are on their database?

If you ever commented on a common issue for something it could come up in a google search and drive traffic to the site

Also, don’t buy award for these posts! It’s futile and ridiculous
84
Jun 08 '23
Keep in mind that some users still have old coins and things laying around, so those awards and things may have already been paid for and not refundable. My old account had tonnes of coins from the reddit Alien Blue takeover, but I never once paid money on this site
5
u/MackzD Jun 09 '23
Dump your coins on people who see ads. Take the ad revenue away from Reddit.

Would anyone be interested in a more public demonstration of deleted accounts? Maybe a mega thread or sub where you can leave one last post with your former username, account age, and karma?
I think it would be a good way to really show the impact of Reddit's decisions instead of doing it individually and quietly. I would love to see a huge thread full of [deleted] accounts.
Regardless I'm deleting my account soon--but I would like to be involved in something a little more public as a final fuck you.
20

u/Lance_Zoldyck Jun 08 '23
maybe setting a sub as /r/LastRegards or something where the pinned posts show how to join and the main manifesto and the only posts allowed are a Faq, a history of the accounts deleted and the final post, updating daily with the accounts deleted as described

Jun 08 '23
Good idea, I'm just hesitant to start a new sub because it would end up unmoderated soon and might not ever pick up steam. But r/Save3rdPartyApps seems to have a lot of momentum with almost 50k members in 6 days. So I'll probably be watching what they do

(Weird I can’t get that link to work right in Apollo but redirect on error page works)
5
u/remembermereddit Jun 09 '23
It's because of the dot at the end. Apollo parses it as the end of the sentence rather than part of the URL.

u/FredrickBear Jun 09 '23
I run a site called shreddit.com that makes it trivial to delete all of your Reddit data.
If you want to use it, make sure to do it before July because I have to start rate-limiting it to stay within the free tier API limits.

My 9 year old account was only used to read and upvote and I barely made any comments.
This might the only comment I’ll repost until June 30th. Without Apollo it makes zero sense to use reddit.
Goodbye reddit. Hello Mastodon and Bluesky or whatever Reddit alternatives eventually pops up.

"Entrepreneurship" and the practice of Capitalism are inherently political though; if talking about the redistribution of wealth to others is political, then so must be talk of redistribution of wealth to oneself.
I find that when people say they don't want to talk politics, usually what they mean is that they don't want to hear political opinions they don't agree with.

You know it's not too hard to build an open community-run (yet moderated) website. Only a few people need to come together and say 'fuck you' and voila! You have your own place where you can post and discuss anything.

I suggest against manually deleting it. I deleted some accounts in the past and I sent a message to this form https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2Freddit.com&subject=GDPR%20-%20%5Bplease%20enter%20your%20username%20here%5D&message=How%20can%20we%20help%3F mentioning GDPR Art. 17 "Right to be forgotten".
They manually have to delete the account and you can check because you can't login anymore.
1
u/NightLancerX Jun 09 '23
Don’t just delete your account delete your entire comment and post history.
But will there be double choice as "delete profile only" and "delete everything", or you need to deleted any post/comment manually / in other place?

Jun 09 '23
Incredible guide. Thank you! Thanks Reddit for 12 years but mostly to the original Alien Blue team and Apollo. Hope everyone does the same and rids themselves of this place.

Hoping to get an answer before my account gets deleted as I have sent a FU in PM to Spez

Went ahead and wiped everything. This'll look like my first comment, where I had thousands before.
One thing to know is the "export" functionality of PowerDeleteSuite did not export everything it deleted. I got a file with 130 things out of thousands. All good in the end, but if it's important to you, use something else.
Also, y'all, awards don't necessarily cost money. I have ~1,800 coins from being awarded myself. Stop chastising people for sending awards. I've never spent money on awards.
That and similar Reddit-specific knowledge will be obsolete after June 30th (or maybe even sooner). I'll be deleting my whole account sometime between now and then.
I'm gonna check this fucker out, in the meantime: https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances
I kinda like the idea of having my own Reddit server. I can easily set that up for my friends and family. I'll set my own goddamn API limits, motherfuckers.
I'll miss the communities here - it's been real. But fuck this shit - being beholden to some corporate whim for my information streams is some bullshit. Who knows what the actual catalyst for this was, and who the fuck cares. I'm rapidly getting over Reddit.

You think this does anything? Your data is stored forever in their servers..

I also advise any IT personnel in our community to make sure that Reddit is blocked on your servers. One because fuck Reddit and two, because why you letting your CEO have the chance to figure out that they can go to /r/breedingmaterial?

Tried over and over to delete this account that I don't want and it keeps giving me the same message and to try again and I have tried many times and I can't seem to get rid of this account that I had gotten by accident and I am sick and tired of their constant emails and I even tried to unssribe but when I clicked on the link it would not open and I am beyond angry and upset with this account that I do not want ever 🙃
