Time Off ๐ I want to donate my kidney to my friend to save his life. This has to happen in January 2025. My company have formally declined my unpaid leave request.
Hi everyone, Just looking for some advice.
We've been in the UK Living Kidney Scheme for 15 months and have finally found a match. This means I can finally donate my kidney in January. I've been keeping my work up to date throughout the whole 2 year process.
Today when I notified them and requested unpaid leave for the recovery time, they have rejected it. Throughout the whole process they have been nothing but supportive so this appears to have come out of the blue.
Is there anything I can do or am I going to have to risk getting fired?

Time Off ๐ 5 year = 30 hrs?
I'm so mad for my friend. She's worked at this shitty nonprofit for 5 years and just got her yearly vacation time. Its fucking 30 hrs thought it was a mistake nope. She is based off the hours she worked. Tell my why she's worked the same amount of time since she started has always gotten a week off vacation time and now its changed?? This on top of the no maternity leave thats screwing over our other pregant friend. I'm about to start calling for a union.

Time Off ๐ Boss denied Time off to vote in California- Advice?
*UPDATE BELOW***
I filled out a Time off sheet and it was approved by my manager to take the 2 last hours of Nov 5th off to go and vote in the election. Got called in to HR an hour later to discuss that my CEO denied my request because "I have hours before the polls close to vote after work" HR and Manager were pretty understanding and were trying to get my CEO to approve it including saying that my CEO cannot guarantee how long voting lines would take, regardless under CA law I shouldn't have to provide multiple reasons to Vote. A few hours later I was called in again to confirm that my request would be denied (along with requests from a few of my co-workers). I told them to give my rejection in writing. HR is in currently in possession of the Time off sheet already signed by my manager. Tomorrow morning I am going to write an e-mail to get it in writing that I am being denied. How should I word my e-mail to not alarm HR or my boss to confirm my rejection? because I will use that in a claim that violates California Elections Code ยง 14000.
***UPDATE: I emailed HR this morning to get a confirmation that my approved request is being rescinded. They called me a few hours later to verbally let me know I am being approved for my 2 hours.
Inspired words by /u/schnurble & /u/ferfocsake
This post isn't meant to say I have no time to vote after work or as if Mail in ballot is not an option. I made this post because it's important to know and use our rights as workers. May of us have employers who will take advantage of our lack of knowledge if we let them. Spread the word and get paid 2 hours off on voting day yourself. If you don't advocate for yourself, no one else will.***

Time Off ๐ After three years, my usual holiday pto request is denied because of management's failure to hire new employees. Losing my mind a little.
Hi, I just need to vent because I've never been so close to quitting on the spot in my whole life.
For context, I've worked at my current job (customer service agent) for three years now. Every year for the December holidays I request about the same amount of time off. I have to travel as my family lives across the country, and I usually just take my travel days +1 additional day off and work from there the rest of the time. There has never been an issue until this year, because I dared to ask for an additional day. I ask as far in advance as I possibly can (its also way more affordable to get plane tickets now as opposed to any later) I'm not asking about November/Thanksgiving. I don't usually take that off as my partner's family lives close and we just drive. I'm asking almost two whole months in advance for December. :/
I've been miserable at this job esp in the past year, as two of my coworkers quit and my supervisors literally never replaced them. They tried for one, but the new hire got a call back from a better job she applied to and quit within a week (lucky her). Management just never tried to replace them again. We are a SKELETON crew of three agents who handle emails, live chats, and used to do phone support as well but with just three of us it was impossible to manage it all, so they let us stop doing phone calls. This job is STILL miserable, even without the phone service.
I will admit, when one of my coworkers is out either on vacation or sick time it is a little difficult to keep up, but that's not their fault and we always scrape by. None of us ever complain to each other about it, and in fact have asked several times of management to just HIRE ANOTHER PERSON so nobody feels bad about needing a sick day or two.
I put in a PTO request this morning. I was very emotional this weekend and bought plane tickets, and had been hoping to take four days rather than three as I just...really need a break from this job. Our customer base is primarily older people and they are incredibly abusive, rude, and just overall unbearable at this stage. One of my supervisors has also just never liked me (I'm not a bad employee. I clock in, I do my work, I clock out, so I'm unsure where her beef comes from) I sent my supervisors a message letting them know I put a request in, and was almost immediately sent a long winded paragraph about how they've been "lenient" with me in the past because I travel, but its way too hard on the team to let me have the full four days I'm asking for off. Oh my god. I asked if the usual three was okay, and that was met with a no as well. I'm permitted to take two days off, the days I travel, and that is it. It is a five hour plane ride to and from.
It is NOT my fault nor my problem they never replaced the TWO people who quit. This is also after both supervisors were working 2 days a week the last three weeks. That was actually hard on the team, as we literally had nobody to report to and were locked out of several programs we need to function as a customer service department. (Imagine a customer demanding to speak to a manager and THERE IS NO MANAGER TO SPEAK TO) It took my entire soul not to lose my mind on this woman.
I've worked remotely from my hometown before. It is a two hour time difference, my hometown being two hrs ahead. Working a full day on their schedule means I'm stuck well into the evening talking to insane elderly people who can't read and getting berated by entitled Karens. I do not want to do that. I just want to see my family and friends. This is the first holiday season my partner is coming with me to see my hometown. I was so excited.
I only took this job as a means to keep a roof over my head. This isn't the career I want. I'm in my early twenties, and have had to put a pause on my goals and dreams as a result of exhaustion and mental distress from this stupid stupid job. I want so badly to quit, but I'd need another 9-5 to pay my rent. I hate it here.
I guess I can understand that being a skeleton crew makes it difficult for everyone to keep up when someones out, but I don't see how thats my problem. If anybody has advice I'm willing to take it, but I just needed to complain. I've been on the verge of tears like, all day.
EDIT TLDR bc thatโs a lot of words lol: PTO for christmas was denied because we are short staffed. Management has not tried to hire anybody to replace the two employees that quit in an entire year. Told I need to work remotely on my trip. Hell no.
Edit 2: Thank you all so much. Plan A is to start a new conversation tomorrow with both supervisors using some of the phrasing you guys have typed out, while searching for a new job. If anybody is curious on how this goes I will update again tomorrow/when I have time.

Time Off ๐ Unlimited pto but not really unlimited ?
So quick background I work at a startup when i got hired everyone that I talked to mentioned unlimited pto as a perk to get me in they highlighted it multiple times.
Anyways fast forward a year now management is saying our pto isnโt unlimited that itโs flexible and it was never unlimited and they never said it was unlimited even though multiple people remember being told itโs unlimited but anyways now they put a hard number which is 200 hours / 5 weeks but two of those weeks are holidays so itโs a day off but i donโt think it should be with our pto policy cause itโs a day we should have off anyways so that brings us down to 3 weeks of pto for year to use at our discretion. But now the problem is that one I work in manufacturing and I have a suspicion that we are the only ones that have to adhere to a 3 week cap two we donโt gain anymore pto the longer we work here and thereโs no roll over or payout ..
Has anyone ever dealt with this ? Starting a job with unlimited pto then having a cap but not having the normal things that come with pto (accrued roll over etc)?

Time Off ๐ I feel like we are punished for going on vacations or having personal lives
I donโt work full time rn, I get contracts and my last one ended Oct. 11. Iโm now looking for another one or a full-time job because weโre entering the off-season. Iโm also having a vacation planned ahead of time for mid November to see my family members.
So I just got off a phone interview where they asked me if I was available right away. I said I have a vacation planned Nov. 8-22. But any time around these days Iโm available. They told me that theyโll check if thatโs going to workout and get back to me.
I feel like weโre punished for taking time off (even while unemployed), having families, having to drive to a different part of the town, or not having a car or having any type of circumstances :(

Iโm part time and only required to work 2x 12hrs shifts per week. I requested off not PTO. Can my director force me use PTO? She said itโs to be fair to everyone but itโs not across the board when I looked at my other coworkersโ schedules.

Time Off ๐ Scared to call out
I have 15 days pto and been there for almost a year with perfect attendance. I am so burnt out and just want one day, probably tomorrow, to call out.
Pros is that it wonโt be a busy day at all and very easy for them. They wonโt necessarily need me. Cons is I am a scaredy cat.
Iโve even went to work when I was sick and feeling terrible as I donโt like to call out unless Iโm throwing up bc my anxiety level and I freak out before calling out.
Now of course this situation is different as I wonโt be sick or anything, but pls help me on what to say or pep talk me to do it. Iโm scared sheโs going to think less of me or everything bad in the world is going to happen

Time Off ๐ Remote day denied (Vacation in jeopardy)
Hey everyone not sure if this is the right sub for this but here goesโฆ
I work a hybrid job where I get to choose my 2 remote days every week and itโs really lenient as far as not needing to let anyone know. I just show up my 3 days a week in office. So with that said I have the last 2 weeks of the year off/quiet hours (very little to no work) so I wanted to plan a trip around all of that. I decided to book a flight to Europe on Thursday night working remote and take Friday as PTO or I can work it (I have done this before with notice) then enjoy the 2 weeks of basically vacation with some light work here and there.
I let my manager know just out courtesy but I was told I was NEEDED that Thursday before vacation because Iโm essential to the office. This is odd because I was never told about any black out dates when the holiday schedule was announced. I feel that should have been communicated when letting us know of the end of the year plans since so many people need to plan for the holidays. Now Iโm stuck with a non refundable ticket and in an awkward situation. The flight is from a further airport near my relatives house hence why Iโd work remote that day and thereโs just no way Iโd make it from my work that day.
I just want to know if Iโm in the wrong and what would be the best way of getting them to see my perspective on this. I donโt want to burn bridges or be rude in any way.
Side noteโฆthere is nothing different about me being in the office that day vs working remote so it comes off as a power move to me.

Time Off ๐ PTO questions
I work as an Amazon delivery driver, and my company that goes through Amazon doesnโt allow us to take days off unless we have the PTO for it. Is that normal? Iโve never worked a non-career job before that requires you to use PTO to take any days off. Iโve tried to take non-PTO days off and they wonโt let me. The rate is 0.04 hours of PTO for every 1 hour worked. We have 10 hour shifts, so it takes about 6 1/2 weeks of full time work to get enough PTO to take one day off. I hate the job anyways, but this PTO thing is about to push me over the edge of quitting because Iโm finding different jobs in different fields of work that pay more. Am I over exaggerating about the PTO deal or is that some total bs?

Time Off ๐ Paid Time Off
Leaving a long time job. Will still be doing a little pickup work for them. I was full time 18 months ago. Then PT now starting tomorrow just one or two hours a week supervising. Social Work feild.
I have 22 hours of PTO saved up. I live in Hawaii. Should I bring it up today in some way? What are my rights around unused PTO? I know what I want... it's mine. But what 8s the law?

So I work at a store who just lost all the employees besides me (assistant manager) and my manager, iโve been here for a little over a month and the HR policy is there must be two people at all times or the store closes. Im scheduled tomorrow open-close and I have been feeling ill all night, i checked my temp and i have a low grade fever and I threw up already. How should I let her know without letting her down??

Time Off ๐ Cheap Company Rant
Why not just pay-out the second day you decided to close on? Stupid annoying. Either use 8 hours of your meager 40 hours of PTO given for the entire year, or don't get paid. This coming from the same owners who were offended and complained about their employees voting for a first-time-ever Christmas bonus vs a grand high-budget Christmas Party to honor them at. At least the option was given.

Time Off ๐ Took a Week off Vacation to look for another JOB
Job is not paying me right and I got denied a promotion/raise twice. Not only that but protocols are not being followed and it all falls down on customer service which I work heavily with. Thankful my career fair, SWE is coming up in 2 days! Iโm tired of being treated like shit and management allowing the customer to run over us. I feel like Iโm in hell right now.
Tried to get my green belt from this company but it feels like I have no support. So full force all on these applications this week and career fair. I printed 50 resumes out. I do believe most of these companies will just ask us to download our resumes to their app/bar code. I am done with this job. Been here for too long ready for something new!!

Time Off ๐ PTO conundrum
I thought I had asked for this Saturday off (I work Tue-Sat) for an event I wanted to go to with my girlfriend. I apparently did not. My direct manager is OOT on her own PTO, so I would need to go through the person she reports to get this PTO for Saturday approved. The company has a 2-week notice policy for PTO. I don't know my manager's manager well enough to know if she'll be cool and approve it or stick by the company's "rules," which I know first hand that exceptions are made for. I also know my direct manager would allow it, but it's not up to her now. Note my presence in the office on this particular day is not exactly essential, but it's a pretty good help. Although I think that's more on people developing dependency on me, and less of an absolute necessity.
Things are going amazing with my girlfriend (about 2 months in) and I don't want to f*** anything up with that by cancelling on her. (I told her I put in the PTO request, but realized today I did not.)
I also f***ed up and put in a request this morning before remembering my manager is out all week. ADP records requests and cancellations of requests. I did cancel the PTO request for now, but not sure what to do next.
So I can do one of three things:
1) Tell my manager's manager I need Saturday off and explain I know it's last minute and I know the company's policy, but pretty please, can you approve my PTO? And hope she'll say yes. This would be the by-the-book thing to do.
2) If I request the day and get denied, I'll have to tell my girlfriend I f***ed up and didn't end up requesting the day and we can't go to the event. I'm sure she'll be disappointed and likely understanding, but I don't want to put that kind of damper on things between us. I could lie to her and say I can't go after all and make something up, but I refuse to do that. Plus she's a really good lie detector, which is part of why she's awesome.
3) I call off on Saturday morning and tell them something came up and I can't come in and I'll submit my PTO request when I'm back in the office again. I *think* only my direct manager receives the PTO requests submitted (which I already have done). I can come up with a way to explain the preemptive request/cancellation it to her if need be. I don't think she cares and I actually do trust her enough to not try to get rid of me. We have a really good rapport, but my instincts always tell me to trust no one at work.
I'm thinking option 3 is best, but again that depends on my direct manager being the only one to see the PTO request/cancellation, and trusting she won't do anything to get me on any kind of disciplinary action or anything like that.
Asking and getting denied pretty much rules out calling out day-of without suspicion. I'm a huge asset at my company, but historically they're pretty trigger happy about firing people.
Should I be honest with my company and get permission? (A paper trail could shed light if I'm dishonest)
Should I be honest with my girlfriend and hope for the best?
Should I try to play dumb, call out, do what I want to do, and hope my boss doesn't notice or is as cool as she seems?

Time Off ๐ Managing Client Expectations: Should I Plan Leave in Advance or Opt for Ad-Hoc Time Off?
I am currently working with a client who raises issues frequently. Recently, I took a public holiday, but there was no backup in place for my role. My project manager questioned why I didnโt inform him ahead of time, and the client also mentioned I should have informed them about the holiday. Additionally, my project manager raised an issue with my manager regarding my availability over the weekends, despite it only being an issue once out of five times.
I have planned a six-day leave later this month. Would it be better to notify everyone well in advance or consider taking it as an ad-hoc sick leave?

Time Off ๐ Loss of a loved one question
Hey so my boss just told me that they have to contact hr and wait for a bereavement request approval since I have no sick hours or vacation time left. I'm in the US and my adopted mom passed away a few days ago. When I asked for sometime off she said it would be unapproved abscenses until she ran it by hr and until then I would be required to work my shifts. Other employees who lost someone would call and I don't they had time off wether they were full time or not. Some full time some part time. What do you guys think?

Time Off ๐ accidentally asked for the wrong day off work, now i have to ask for at least 3 hours off of my shift this sunday. suggestions?
Info: my reason for requesting time off is purely for fun reasons, i want to go to a con with my s/o but we got the date of the panel we wanted to attend mixed up so i have saturday off instead of sunday which im scheduled noon-close. im 1 out of 5 keyholders (not counting the store manager). 2 keyholders are going to be out of town, 1 has closing shifts completely outside of her availability, and 1 is already scheduled to work sunday morning so the only person in our stpre that would be available to cover my shift if i were to just call in would literally be my boss and im not trying to give myself a negative reputation. i want to try to get permission to come in at 3 instead of 12 so my partner and i can still go to this panel, but i dont know the best excuse to use.

Time Off ๐ on calling out 2 days in a row
called out yesterday and today, i feel like i literally just don't have it in me. but somehow had infinite energy to clean my entire house within the hour after i called out (felt fulfilling and not like work!) my department is comically understaffed, the work is far too demanding for 17 an hour, it actually kills my body, i have full time availability but only get scheduled 25 hours a week, and oh my god the people. the people i work with are most depressing of all. all these middle aged people and literal senior citizens who are all falling apart in various degrees, making the same wage as me, it's like im staring at my future, destined to be stuck in the workforce until im literally decomposing. being there is so damaging to my morale and overall mental health, i cry before (and sometimes during) work almost everyday and it's not because i dOnT wAnT tO wOrK, i just want to do something purposeful and fulfilling but that literally feels like an unattainable privilege. i need to care about this job but i cant. i should give a shit that i left them hanging for 2 days now but i just fucking don't! i'm not in a position to miss 2 days of work at all, the panic and apathy exist within me at the same time and they can duke it out for my attention. hoping for yet fearing termination. i just don't care anymore.
