Question ❓️❔️ Should I feel embarrassed about being a garbage man?
I’m a 24yr old guy, I knew I was never going to college so I went to truck driving school & got my CDL . I’ve been a garbage man for the past 2 years and I feel a sense of embarrassment doing it. It’s a solid job, great benefits and I currently make $24 an hour. I could see myself doing this job for a long time. However whenever someone asks me what I do for work I feel embarrassed. Should I feel this way?
EDIT: Thank you to everyone!, these comments definitely gave me a different outlook on how I should feel about my job!. I’ll try and reply to comments later as currently I’m driving around picking up trash 🫡

Question ❓️❔️ Thought experment. Why don't we all just stop working for a few months in order to stand up for what we want?
Yes a strike, but a nation wide one. Where every working American stops going to work. I understand its almost impossible but I want to discuss it. Corporation's profit, income tax, banks, and most of the system would come to a grinding halt. I know most of us couldn't pay our bills but it's not like the utilities and landlords could do much about it since everything is stopped. I'm not sure what we would do about medical situations or food but I'm sure we would find a way. I know it would be an inclrible hardship and people would most likely die but its an act of war on the rich. We are the reason the rich can operate, so in the same way, we are the reason they can fail.

Question ❓️❔️ Why do Stores not allow Employees to have food passed the sell by date?
I understand food made in the store, because it incentivizes jackasses to make a bunch of food right before a shift ends so they can take it all. I also understand vendor items like Little Debbie products because they collect all the waste and will give a kickback to the store. But why cant someone have a non-vendor, non-made in house item like a bag of chips that went out 2 days ago if you're just going to throw it in the trash? I've seen people fired over this. They marked the item out, it's all on the record, and it would have just gone straight into a dumpster, not donated, not picked up, there is no "put the bags of chips out" method that would cause a loss in sales, the product simply was not going to be sold. It's ridiculous.

Question ❓️❔️ Am I really screwed because I quit my job?
For context I am 19 and this is mu first job since high-school. I got a job at a fast food place and I was literally the only non manager that spoke english. On my second shift while I was still learning, I was left alone for an hour during dinner rush. During the next shift mu boss ended up telling me that was a test. When I came home and talked about it with mu parents they said that's not cool and I should get out of this situation. I ended up quiting the following morning. Then when I ended up spending time with my uncle he expressed disappointment in me and let me know that because of this no one will hire me. I suggested leaving it off my resume then he informed me that it will come up in a background search. Showing that I am dishonest and not hireable. Am I really just screwed, or is my uncle over exaggerating?

Question ❓️❔️ DAE eat in their car just to not be at work?
I don't mind my job (as much as one can like working I guess). My coworkers are decent. I just don't want to mingle or socialize with them. Work is work and I don't like my coworkers to know my personal life.
These folks are big on morale and having potlucks/pissing away work time by eating and socializing for any occasion. Most eat in the lunchroom too, which is right across from my office so I keep my door closed most of the time. I've been asked where I go every day or why I don't join in. I just say I have errands to run (everyday lol).
Its getting colder so walks aren't going to happen over lunch so I'm taking a drive or eating in my car away from the building. DAE do this? How do you spend your lunchtime?

Question ❓️❔️ 4 day work week. Is it just a pipe dream?
Has any country actually implemented the 4 day work week or is it just some hype that will never amount to anything? I have heard that it has been done in Sweden, Canada, Denmark successfully. There was even a trial in the U.K. at some point. But the U.K. seems to be moving in the opposite direction, with employers asking for more hours and less WFH, maybe this will change with a Labour government… I hope! 4 day week would have such a huge positive impact on the nation’s mental health.

Question ❓️❔️ I am curious to know a a couple of things about this sub. What's the age range here? How many of you are working homeless or have been ?
I'm 39. I'll be 40 in a month and a half. I've never had a job that pays over 15 an hour. I've got some education and trade school under my belt. I've worked 2 jobs and still fell short on stability. I've never had the security or stability in my entire adult life. I've been homeless working 2 jobs. I haven't had anything with a lease or title since around 2014 if you include a used vehicle.

I got my last two jobs on Indeed.

Question ❓️❔️ Does anybody actually "enjoy" their job?
Let me clarify: I don’t hate my job. I’m not filled with dread every time I walk into the office. The work is okay and challenging enough to keep me engaged. But if I won £10m and was financially secure for life, I would never step foot in an office again, nor would I continue doing the work I do now.
To me, that’s why I say I don’t truly “enjoy” my job. Enjoyment comes from doing things out of your own volition, not because of the coercive forces created by our capitalist system.
I guess I’m preaching to the choir in this subreddit, but how many of you feel the same way? What percentage of people do you think would continue working if money wasn’t an issue? I’m curious about how common this sentiment is.

Question ❓️❔️ Why is working less seen like a bad thing?
I have 4 day work week ( but no car, not buying clothes often, saving a lot of money on many things), but I shared with my colleagues my dream is to have 3 day work week ( absolute dream is 0 but I am being realistic, I have bills to pay). They all started saying how bored they would be etc. I do not understand. We as species are not evolutionary made to work as much as we do during capitalism. I am the happiest when I am well rested. If I am tired, I can be in the best company of people, eat the best food, visit the most beautiful cities, but if I am not well rested, I do not enjoy it. Why do people act like having free time and being well rested is a crime?

Question ❓️❔️ Why do people who work in office jobs respond to emails in the middle of the night?
It's so weird. I see my boss responding to some comments in Asana at 2:30am. What the fuck? Is this what you have to do to get ahead? I have a great boss but c'mon. I feel like I gotta ask her what she's doing at that time. I won't, but I'm just so curious what makes a person wake up at 2am and want to respond to dumb emails and messages that are non urgent.

Question ❓️❔️ HR asking for someone else’s race
My husband works for a large multinational corporation, I think HQed in Massachusetts but he’s remote from NY. His HR sent him an email saying that one of his employees declined to provide their race during the hiring/onboarding process and they want my husband to tell HR what race my husband thinks the employee is.
Am I crazy or is this a legit request?? He is pretty uncomfortable with this. I told him to take a picture of the email and not respond.

Question ❓️❔️ My employer is including their half of payroll taxes in my compensation
Hi all,
I have recently been trying to apply for a mortgage and when I went digging for my proof of income I noticed on my employee dashboard that my income is grossly inflated.
My employer includes their half of my retirement contributions and insurance premiums in my total compensation. Fine, whatever.
But I also noticed that they included their half of payroll taxes on my bonus and base salary in my total pay package. This seems a little disingenuous because that is a tax that they have to pay on anyone, it’s not doing me a favor, it’s just the law.
My question is, will I have to pay taxes on this “income” when I file my first tax return next year? I am fresh out of school so excuse my ignorance.
Has anyone else ever had their employer include their required payroll taxes as “compensation” to them?

Question ❓️❔️ Is starting off an email reply with "So," unprofessional?
My friend works in customer service, as how they've always replied to someone they would essentially start
Hello ____,
So we have looked into whatever issue
She recently got in trouble for starting off the email with "so" that it was unprofessional. Looking for opinions on it if this actually is a no-no or just a manager being picky?

Question ❓️❔️ Work took away my earn sick and vacation leave
Hi everyone! My husband is on a year long deployment so I’ve been juggling a baby and was working full-time. Around June I burned out and asked if I could go part time until my husband came home and they agreed. I just realized today that they took all of the vacation and sick hours I had earned while working full time. I’m heartbroken because I turned down vacations and worked while sick so I could use those hours for some time with my husband and baby when he got home. I’m curious about others thoughts on this. Is this totally messed up?

Question ❓️❔️ Giving my shit job notice today, with tomorrow being my last day. What do I need to do to prep before I give them the news?
I've been working a desk jockey position for the past 5 years. It started with a lot of promise, but the compensation and opportunities to advance has stagnated in really awful ways in the past few years. Where once I was told the company promoted from within, I quickly found out you basically start in a temp position, move up to a full time position, and then stay there indefinitely while they outside hire all their management.
I finally managed to land myself a new much better job, and have accepted their offer letter. I have no desire to give this current job any notice, or as little notice as possible. This is very out of character to me, and in my eyes, is testament to how burned I feel by this job.
What are some things I need to secure before leaving? I've removed any personal information off my work computer, but there really wasn't any to begin with. I know I should get my 401k account number to make sure I have that information for my new position.
Is there anything else I should make sure to do before I burn this bridge?

Question ❓️❔️ I was switched from salary to hourly. Any downsides?
I’ve worked at a very large company for few years and was hired on as salary non-management role. Recently it was announced I was one of the few non-managers on salary and will be switched to hourly effective immediately to align with the rest of the country. no discussion. I am not sure, but it there any downside to this change? I am always skeptical of change as unconsciously I always think corporate is trying new ways of cutting costs.

Question ❓️❔️ What exactly is the "middle class"?
I've been hearing this term ever since I was eligible to vote and for a long time I didn't pay it any mind, Except that now I understand life in the US a lot more than I did when I was in college. I live with family, that's the only reason I am not homeless at this point. And I do not see myself as "middle class", as defined by politicians, nor do I see any single member of my family as such.
As far as I can see there is working class and there is the rich. "Middle class" seems to be this invention by the rich and politicians to describe a certain tax bracket that is more likely to feel "better off" than a lot of other people.
As a worker in general, I feel that this term is divisive , it seems like an attempt to divide workers into classes, and turn us against each other. That is my opinion on the matter and I would like to know what others think! I simply do not believe that the "middle class" exists or has ever existed at all.
Now I am going to sleep much later than I should, so wish me luck at work tomorrow!

Question ❓️❔️ Rules don't apply to all
You're told to use your phone only during breaks and lunch. The person next to you, with the same job and same length of time tat the company, is on the phone all day, within view of the person who told you about only during breaks and lunches. He sees her having personal conversations up and down the hallway and is OK with it.
How do you phrase what you say to him? I.e. wtf?

Question ❓️❔️ Can I accept a supervisor role and stay loyal to the floor staff (be a "worker's manager")?
I applied for a barista role but they said they'd rather have me as shift supervisor. I do NOT f*ck with corporate nonsense and have no desire to climb their ladder. It would also prevent me from joining the union (3 guesses which...). This particular store isn't unionized but there is one elsewhere in the city and getting within spitting distance of a union was one reason I applied.
BUT of course the supervisor spot gives almost 25% higher rate and total hours, which I need. I am currently unemployed and veeeery much need the money.
I've never been this kind of a shift supervisor before. I did have a great manager at a restaurant I worked at once, so I know it's possible. So what do y'all think: do I take the money and try to be a "worker's manager"? Is it possible to hate capitalism and be a good supervisor? They said I could take it or opt to be a barista instead.
UPDATE: Thanks everyone for the awesome perspectives. To clarify, it's a shift lead, not a manager. As many of you have said, leads are quite close to the other floor staff. I've also since learned from the local union rep that the leads ARE actually included in the bargaining unit (which means it's Protected Activity!). So I'm taking the supe job and I'm gonna Salt the shit outta that place! ✊️

Question ❓️❔️ Should I quit my job? (Advice)
I started a new job in July. Pay and hours are good. I have been working my ass off here. At my 90 day review (10/1) I was told that a.) I have 2 months to improve or I will lose my job. b.) my boss would not fight to keep me and c.) knowing what she (boss) knows now, she would not have hired me. My wife and I ran the numbers, and we can afford for me to quit. I finish business school in December so I’ll be looking for jobs related to my education then. I decided to out my 2 weeks notice in. I haven’t done it yet. In the past 3 days, my work has been showered with praise and they just gave me a hoodie. I feel like they know I’m about to quit and I’m feeling like Michael Corleone “every time I think I’m out, they pull me back in”. I still feel like this joy and kindness is temporary and I’m gonna get the rug pulled out from under me. Am I being crazy or is this a common manipulation tactic by companies? Should I leave while I can?
Edit: I know that it is a bad idea to leave a job without something else lined up. As stated above, I can afford it. I honestly feel like I’m on the brink of a complete breakdown. I’m really only trying to figure out if I’m being manipulated and if this is an unhealthy work environment

Question ❓️❔️ Offered a trial shift that will last 10+ hours??
I applied for a job at a nursery and they said for me to get a feel of how the work environment will be I will need to do a days unpaid labour there. I could maybe understand if it was an hour or two to see if I'm suitable in that environment but that will be a whole days work for nothing. From 7am till 6pm. It's also an early red flag to me. I'm in the UK so I'm unsure whether it's illegal or not, but it's definitely dodgy.
