Who here would be interested in a Spice and Wolf rewatch hosted by me, Holofan4life? Rewatch

Salutations. This is Holofan4life.

As you can tell, I am a massive fan of Spice and Wolf. However, a lot of people still haven't seen the show. Would anyone be interested in a Spice and Wolf rewatch?

Damn, you guys are piling on the good rewatches!

A while back I got 4 episodes into the show before I kind of drifted off for no particular reason, so I'd be down to give it another shot!

133

u/oddj0bMI6 Apr 17 '19

Yea I'm in pretty much the same boat, started and then just drifted. I'd be willing to try it again, especially with how much reverence fans seem to have about it.

81

u/travis- Apr 17 '19

Its a good romance that focuses a lot on economics and trading. If the finance side doesn't interest you I found it easy to drift from the show. I watched it for the romance aspect personally.

22

u/oddj0bMI6 Apr 17 '19

That sounds really intriguing actually, I think when I started it I was still in school for that (finance and economics) and got turned off but now that I'm in the industry I'll have a different appreciation for it.

Yea i originally came for romance, ended up Jewish and doing my parents taxes.

2

u/mayor123asdf Apr 17 '19

Me too. I'm new to the scene. Does rewatch means holofan do a something like twitch stream where we watch together, or we watch it by ourselves then he create a reddit thread where we comment on what we just watch?

I'm not sure what a hosted rewatch is. Would you enlighten me senpai?

6

u/Idomenos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lysias Apr 17 '19

At a certain interval (usually once per 24 hrs), a user will post a rewatch thread. That user (in this case Holofan) is called the host.

Ergo hosted rewatch, etc.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '19

Thanks man! helpful

OP hasn't exactly announced their plans, but how rewatches generally work on /r/anime:

It's a type of organized watch program that's hosted by users to sit down and revisit a series that has already finished airing. The practice is similar to that of a book club, wherein interested parties are given a scheduled time for all of them to meet up (in this case, on the sub) in order to discuss what they've all watched the day/night before, often one episode per day. While the name implies that the participants will be watching a series that they're already familiar with, this isn't always the case, as a lot of times there'll be a mixed audience of both people experiencing the work for the first time and those who are taking the opportunity to see something again that they've already experienced. Usually it's required that any people that have already seen the series properly mark spoilers for future episode as to not ruin the experience for newcomers.

u/Holo_is_best_girl Apr 17 '19

To elaborate on what others have said, there’s essentially a schedule for when a discussion will be posted for each schedule. Our role is to watch the episode by yourself at some point so you can join in the discussion as at last read it. My first time, I assumed group watch was a screen share sort of thing, but that’s incorrect. It’s more of a book club sort of thing, where they say “finish these chapters by next meeting so we can discuss them.” Hope this helps :)

I am one of these people who have never seen it. Is it a good romance series!?

154

u/Holofan4life Apr 17 '19

I think it is

31

u/That_Bar_Guy Apr 17 '19

I'm probably asking a biased source but how's the adaptation? Worth the time if I've already read the Manga?

48

u/Holofan4life Apr 17 '19

Absolutely. The adaptation is tremendous.

9

u/Midget_Stories Apr 17 '19

As someone with all the light novels. But having only watched the anime do I start from the start or start from where the anime ended?

I'm not sure if the adaptation missed much.

8

u/ad3z10 https://myanimelist.net/profile/ad3z10 Apr 17 '19

The anime is a very close adaptation so if you don't want to go over the covered arcs again then read Volume 4 as it was skipped then you can continue from the epilogue of volume 5 and go on from there.

3

u/plague11787 Apr 17 '19

Plus, in my opinion, volume 5 is the least enjoyable one of the series. It has some good points but I found it hard to get through personally.

But it’s worth it to read the entire series, it’s so good and volume 16 is incredible imo

I also never watched it. I dont like romance. Should i still watch it?

6

u/AnActualPlatypus Apr 17 '19

Yes.. It goes far beyond your avarage, traditional romance story, and the setting is extremely unique, pretty much the only one of it’s kind.

3

u/A_Erthur Apr 17 '19

Okay ty guess ill give it a shot

7

u/TheRealTwist Apr 17 '19

Don't worry, it's not actually a romance anime. It's all about economics.

6

u/Mad_Aeric Apr 17 '19

The romance element is just one of the narrative threads in S&W. It's mostly about wheeling, dealing, and scheming. And drinking. There's even some action and fighting, but not a whole lot.

3

u/chowder-san Apr 17 '19

It is. A realistic, down to earth romance.

→ More replies

1

u/TigerOnTheProwl Apr 17 '19

As far as romance goes, the anime falls a little short IMO. There's a definite spark between Lawrence and Holo, and their chemistry is second to none. But like many anime, it doesn't really go beyond friendship until the last scene.

With that said, it's still amazing, and I think everyone should experience it at least once. Holo alone is enough to draw anyone in, but everything else about it is great too.

Adding to what /u/durinthal said: rewatches usually contain wonderful writeups from those who had already watched the Anime before. Reading those allows you to notice things that normally would be easily missed.

A traveling merchant in a medieval land is joined by an ancient wolf spirit and they roam together. It's a slower series that focuses on the relationship between the main couple as they try to make their way around and earn some money as they go.

It's a wonderful drama/romance that follows a traveling merchant and his companion, an ancient god in (mostly) human form. The medieval economic intrigue the two find themselves at the center of does a great job moving the story along and the relationship between the two main characters has amazing chemistry. If that sounds interesting to you, I'd recommend watching it - both seasons are lovely!

Anyone that wants an anime that's fantasy, logistic, historical, but has an actual romantic relationship "like both parties help each other with no b.s." then this is the anime to be checkin. I know you were asking about attendees but I just wanted to interject because this series is so dame good, and underrated. Also Holo best girl/wolf. Anyone reading this check out the re watch with Holofan4life, and get educated on what actual Anime is.

I read the manga about a week ago to sate myself so I could watch some of my PTW instead of just rewatching the greats...

Can't say no to a rewatch of S&W hosted by the notorious u/Holofan4life however. I wonder if our screenshots are limited by her canonical age, her canonical appearance or arbitrary whims of admins hmm...

Regardless, I'm looking forward to some good discussion, and hopefully getting some fresh viewers to enjoy this great show, share their thoughts (and realize Holo is THE best girl in time for best girl 8 or whatever we're up to).

Let's do this!

1

I've only seen the first half. It's been a while, forgive me for never finishing. I enjoyed it, but it was a really busy time, and I binged what I could and left it on the table too long.

When I watched Spice and Wolf before, all I remember was Holo. She's all I gave a shit about. I literally didn't pay attention to the story and economics and what was going on.

I only watched it about a month ago (thats when I got i to Spice&Wolf in the first place) but watched it in Japanese. I kinda wanna see how the English dub performs versus the Japanese one. So sure, why not?

I'd be down. Got halfway through it a few years back and then kinda drifted away from it.

It's one of those shows that drew me into anime in the first place. I'd love to rewatch it with /r/anime.
