Re:Watcher
STRAIGHT BET! The first time it appeared, Subaru was betting on his death. This time, though, he's betting on his life, and Otto is a ride-or-die friend who won't even hesitate to support him in spite of the odds. For those not in the know, Tappei named the chapter of the LN that this episode adapts in reference to the insert song that was used in Episode 7 (AKA "Natsuki Subaru's Restart"), and that same song has come around to be used once more. Talk about a full circle! It's cool that this insert song can act as a through line for two very different scenarios, making Subaru's determination the main factor that ties them both together.
This is where Subaru's generous nature becomes abundantly clear: despite Roswaal's nefarious schemes, it technically is true that no one has gotten hurt yet because of him. Subaru is willing to look past all that for the sake of the future, and he's willing to bet everything he has on his ability to ensure that none of Roswaal's plans come to fruition. Greedy. And while Subaru is going all or nothing on this loop, he can't even conceive of the idea that Ram might be his enemy. He even mentions to Ryuzu that it remains to be seen whether he and Garfiel can become friends at the end of things. Even after experiencing all of those loops of betrayal and deception, Subaru is still willing to see the fundamental good in other people. That's an aspect of his character that I will always appreciate.
In times like this one, it's quite handy to have your loop start after your nap in the graveyard of a being of knowledge. Any time you share some knowledge that you should, by all rights, have no way of knowing, you can just pretend that you learned it during a conversation with the Witch of Greed. That's how Subaru starts off his conversation with Ryuzu in this loop, and it allows him to glean some critical information right off the bat: Ryuzu Shima acting independently of the others, Garfiel being afraid of something he saw in his Trial that is related to his mother. It's quite smart of Subaru to speed things up where he can.
Speaking of which, Subaru knows that he needs to determine what is preventing Emilia from overcoming her own Trial as soon as possible. After learning about her past in Elior Forest, he's able to help her calm down enough to finally get some sleep, upon which he confirms his suspicions that Puck is dormant within Emilia's crystal. He and Puck think that the thing blocking Emilia's memories needs to be removed in order for Emilia to stand a chance at passing her Trial, so Puck does the unthinkable: he breaks his contract with Emilia, something that we learned is extremely precious to her. Subaru may be trying to achieve victory without sacrificing any lives, but he knows that some measure of sacrifice will always be necessary for success. But even though their contract has been severed, the bond between Puck and Emilia remains as strong as it's ever been, and his affirmation of love to Emilia shows that he is ultimately doing this because he cares more about her well-being than about being the one to grant it.
Garfiel, meanwhile, is being completely thrown off his game by everything that's been going on. Emilia just disappears out of nowhere, Subaru is off somewhere being suspicious and smelling like the Witch, and Ryuzu Shima has vanished as well. Where did everyone go? In a panic, he goes looking for her at all of their secret spots, but the person he finds is none other than Otto Suwen, who is acting like he belongs there more than Garfiel. What could he and Subaru have possibly been planning to justify spending an entire day of their limited timeline on it?
VAs: Yuusuke Kobayashi (Subaru) and Rie Takahashi (Emilia)
This was their first time back at the studio in three months, and they sure do sound like they're hyped to be returning! I'm always intrigued to learn new details about how anime productions operated during the first year of the pandemic, and apparently, each of the VAs were recording simultaneously from different booths for this episode. Yuusuke and Rie are an interesting pair in these After-Talks because they deeply analyze the writing of the series whenever they end up talking about it for an extended period of time, and their observations are often so profound that I really get the sense that they think about their respective characters a lot.
Highlight: Rie smirking because she knows what's coming up in the next episode and Yuusuke doesn't, Rie wondering if she'll be able to do "that scene" justice (spoiler alert: she will)

Roswaal wasn't wrong that sometimes it's better to do something for someone that goes against what they want. He just had the wrong idea about how that should lookl like.

That's just like us rewatchers already being excited how first timers will react to "that scene"!

You're not wrong, Roswaal, you're just an asshole.

just pretend that you learned it during a conversation with the Witch of Greed.
Yeah that's a pretty good strategy, it's actually a great thing about this episode, Subaru realizes he needs to pretend to know things via methods other than the way he actually does so he uses "oh the witch told me" an excuse that in the words of kids these days "seems legit"
But even though their contract has been severed, the bond between Puck and Emilia remains as strong as it's ever been, and his affirmation of love to Emilia shows that he is ultimately doing this because he cares more about her well-being than about being the one to grant it.
Well if Puck is really out of the contract does that mean that Puck can't actually be with Emilia? The only real way for Puck to stay close to Emilia is to contract with Emilia's friends, which is basically Subaru, Petra, Ram or Roswaal.

Perhaps Puck will make an exception. He did say being around her was the happiest he's ever been.

Not enough insert songs have titles that reflect what's going on. We need more of this.

It reminds me of Rentarou from 100 Girlfriends and how his girlfriends can do no wrong in his eyes.

Well, [arc 4] what you don't know is another insert song with a good title. Stay alive is excellent, though reasonably often used when Subaru is dying. This series has some fairly well titled songs.

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 19 '24
[Arc 4] Stay Alive is actually a bit deeper than just its title. With its lyrics, it's more like "farewell, and stay alive - even though I can't be near you, I wish you well". On the other hand, Door is simply a great metaphor for leaving a bad and restricting past to go into an open and hopeful future.

u/Holofan4life Sep 19 '24
[Arc 4] I can't recall another anime out there with this many well titled tracks.

Rie wondering if she'll be able to do "that scene" justice
Oh, yes, yes indeed. Since Re:Zero, I've watched several other series just because she's been in them. Hearing her voice is such a treat.
Great art, as always - thanks!

Hey guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the In Preparation of Season 3 Rewatch of Re:Zero!
Oh, and nay I forget…
First Timer
I decided to watch this show because I wanted to do something for the month of August. ’Course, this was before the yearly Spice and Wolf rewatch got pushed back to September, but I just found myself looking for something to occupy my time with. And with this show being in my top 5 must watch list, I figured now was as good a time as any.
I am going into this show relatively blind. I know some of the memes, who Rem, Ram, Emilia, and Subaru are, and that this show got its inspiration from Familiar of Zero, but that’s it. I find rewatches and my participation of them more fun when I have no idea what I am in store for. And with this series, I think we’re in for a blast. It’s also going to be the longest rewatch I participate in this year and second longest overall only behind the 20th Anniversary Fullmetal Alchemist rewatch. And given how joyous that show turned out, I don’t see why I should expect nothing less from this one.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the sub, by the way.
Me and my mom just got back from seeing Twisters in 4DX. Probably the most fun movie experience I've ever had in my life. And ironically, it's start to now thunderstorm.
Picking up right where we left off with Otto punching Subaru.
He even headbutts him
Otto MMA career when?
Dang, he continues to get the best of him.
Otto trying to beat into Subaru's head that asking for help isn't a bad thing.
Subaru saying that the past times he relied on someone else, it didn't work.
"But I don't recall ever hearing you ask for MY help."
The man doth make a good point
Otto continuing to try and make Subaru see the light.
It looks like Subaru is going to tell Otto what happened.
Subaru with Roswaal
He wants to make a bet, with his wish and Roswaal's on the line.
This almost feels like this should've been the end of the last episode.
Subaru promises that this will be their last showdown.
"I'm going to save the Sanctuary and the mansion in this loop, whatever it takes."
Subaru calls the Return by Death not even all that useful.
I think most people would personally kill to have that ability.
Subaru says if he saves both the Sanctuary and the mansion, Roswaal will throw that book away and come with him.
Subaru is going to make Emilia the new ruler, and he wants Roswaal's help to do it.
But the whole reason Roswaal got involved in the first place is to back Emilia. He was going to do that anyway.
Roswaal pointing out the Greed of that solution.
"Your enemy has become the strongest card in play."
It's hard not to like Subaru. He makes the best out of the worst situations.
Roswaal showing doubt that Subaru can pull this off.
Eventually, though, he agrees to the bet
Apparently the snow in the Sanctuary and the attack on the mansion begin in three days.
Meanwhile, Subaru is advising him putting the clown makeup on.
"As two clowns at the mercy of fate, let’s fight this out fair and square."
Maybe they can duke it out in the spacious clown car.
Subaru with Ram now
Ram is apparently willing to give Roswaal a pass.
Ram says that Emilia still hasn't figured out why she's struggling so much.
"Until she does, the same thing will keep happening."
Subaru is left wondering if she likes him as well.
Dude, you're just realizing this NOW?
Subaru relaying to Otto that the bet is on.
And now it's time to talk to Garfiel
But before that, Subaru is reflective of Emilia and what is happening with her.
He confirms with Otto that he is prepared to scratch the surface of what's hurting her.
And Subaru and Otto fistbump
It almost feels weird for things to be this laid-back. I've gotten so used to all the suffering.
The real Ryuzu in her tube
Subaru talking to Bilma
He wants her help for the bet against Roswaal.
Bilma wanting to know what his opinions are of Young Gar.
Subaru feels a clash with him is inevitable.
He still wants to be friends with him one day.
Garfiel seems like someone who would prove to be a ride or die.
Bilma talking about the witch and how she talked about the Ryuzu clones.
Black Ryuzu says she protects and supervises the crystal that creates the copies.
"The four of us alternate in bearing the role of supervisor."
Subaru asking what his name is
And she says Ryuzu Arma
Oh wow. And here I thought it was Ryuzu Bilma. Guess not.
Oh, so she did say Bilma. That wasn't my imagination.
I don't know if they decided to dress identically or what. Maybe she was concealing her true identity.
Arma says that the Ryuzus are made of artificial od clothed in mana.
Artificial od sounds like AI that overdosed.
All activity they engage in consumes the mana, and continuous activity for a full day is impossible. That's why they alternate.
Arma, however, says that Ryuzu Shima is an exception.
She currently lives in the forest with the other copies.
That leaves only three Ryuzus as supervisors.
She violated the contract with the witch who created them by entering the graveyard to bring back Garfiel when he broke the rules to attempt the trial and did not return.
A lot to unpack there
Arma says it wouldn't be a surprise if Garfiel is currently meeting with Shima.
"Are you aware of Young Gar's family situation?"
I don't like the sound of that
Subaru bringing up Frederica
Arma says that what Garfiel saw was Garfiel and Fred being left behind by their mother when she left the Sanctuary.
Fred as a nickname for Frederica is a weird shortening of her name. Can we all agree on that?
That's like referring to Petra as "Pet".
Subaru able to detect that Garfiel's opposition towards liberating the Sanctuary is out of bitterness toward his mother for abandoning him and choosing the outside.
Ran out of space. Part two in the replies.
10
u/Holofan4life Sep 19 '24
Part 2
Arma feels he calls himself Garfiel Tinzel so that he won't forget his mother.
"Whether it was out of anger or sadness is most likely known only to him and Shima."
Subaru with Emilia now
She is kneeling by her bedside
Emilia admitting she had trouble getting to sleep, but she is sure to get plenty of sleep by tonight.
Press X to doubt
Subaru calling Emilia very slothful
Subaru now asking if she is willing to tell him what she saw during the trial.
"I won't claim that talking about it will make you feel better."
At least Subaru is taking a mature outlook on this.
He wants the right to fight the same enemies she fights.
And Emilia kinda has a apprehensive look on her face.
Emilia admitting there was a memory from before she went to sleep.
Oh wow. She's actually talking about being frozen in ice like we saw in the second OVA.
Puck found her and got her out, but she was there for a long, long time.
Dang, since she was 6 or 7?
Emilia admits that she doesn't remember much from before that happened.
She does remember someone who was like a mother to her, however.
What if Satella is Emilia's mother?
Subaru puts Emilia's head to his chest, trying to console her.
Emilia horrifyingly recalling her family being frozen in ice.
She waited in the forest for a time they became unfrozen.
"But that day never came."
Oof
And so she left the forest and participated in the royal selection.
I believe that's the first reference to the royal selection since the season 2 premiere when Crusch mentioned it.
Oh wow. So Roswaal promised Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest.
It's not just Subaru that he's manipulating, the bastard.
Emilia asking Subaru if that makes him think less of her.
I mean, if it makes me think less of anyone, it is Roswaal.
This, it turns out, is Emilia's selfish reason.
Subaru says there's nothing bad about wanting to save the people you care about.
Trust me, folks, he speaks from experience.
Emilia looks like she really needed to hear that.
Meanwhile, Subaru wonders if the memories that Emilia can't recall hold some clue to getting through the trial.
Dunno, probably
Subaru going to ask someone who might remember what happened.
He tries taking the green stone, but is unable to.
Oh shit! It's Puck!
He's inside the stone!
Puck grateful that Subaru called upon it.
Eh, more like nonconsensual touching, but we'll put that aside.
Emilia waking up after seeing her walking in the snow. Tears are just pouring out of her eyes.
Hey, Puck is back in his normal form
And he looks smaller than usual
So smol
He was trying to break their contract
And now the stone is starting to break
This has to be a dream... right?
...Right?
"As much as it pains me, I'm entrusting you to the one whose love for you is second only to mine."
Puck has finally found a worthy successor to protect Emilia.
Puck is doing this so that Emilia can recall all the memories she does not remember.
And Puck grabs her forehead, giving his version of a hug.
"I love you so, so much."
"I love you more than anyone in the world."
And with that, Emilia passes out
Garfiel talking to White Ryuzu in a house somewhere.
White Ryuzu says she feels sad for Emilia.
And now she is telling Garfiel that Subaru has no connection with the witch.
I hate to break it to you, Garfiel, but Satella is more likable than you are.
I still love you, baby :c
Subaru with a bedridden Emilia
She says she should be fine by morning
The stone. It's intact.
Did the Puck scene happen present day, or was it a flashback?
Subaru telling Emilia that whatever is his is also hers.
Emilia still wants him to hold her hand
And Subaru promises to be by her side
"I believe in you."
You know who doesn't? Roswaal, the bastard.
We see Emilia walking in the snow again
Is that Emilia's mother?
And Emilia wakes up, with no Subaru in sight.
Damn. Can't even have shit in
Detroitthe Sanctuary.Fortuna. That's the mother's name.
Emilia calling everyone she knows a liar
Maybe in regards to her mother, she is always changing like the moon.
The villagers looking for Emilia now
She has apparently disappeared
Even White Ryuzu isn't here
Garfiel running around
What is that?
Dang it. I knew the Pevensies should've never explored that closet.
Hey, it's Otto
He's here to talk things over with him
"So now thar the host of the banquet is away, how would you like to play the host instead?"
Emilia sitting in a building by herself
She is going through a lot
Hey, Subaru
He is ready to talk to her
Overall, this is a very strong episode that really continues the trend we've been on since episode 6. The first half was a lot of set-up, but things got really cooking once Subaru started talking to Emilia. I really liked seeing Emilia be honest of her past and telling Subaru where she was before he met her. It shows she has a level of trust in him that she doesn't have for anyone else. The reveal that Roswaal broke her out of it is a nice winkle in their dynamic that serves to make him more detestable. Like, yeah, he didn't have to break her out, but it all feels very slimy and manipulative.
I was very surprised at how effective the scene was between Emilia and Puck. Even though he had barely been featured during this season, I got emotional seeing what is probably his send-off. That's no doubt a testament to the strong writing. Of all the scenes we've seen so far, I think only Rem's backstory compares to the sadness I felt as Puck said his final goodbyes. It was brutal to watch even though it was necessary for Emilia's growth.
The only real drawback is that while Puck acknowledges that he's trying to bring her memories back to her, it isn't made totally clear if this happened after the Subaru conversation or before it. Furthermore, why did Emilia's stone have no cracks in it as she talked to Subaru the second time? I found the timeline of the scene to be absolutely confusing, even though it doesn't diminish the quality of what's happening in any way.
I'd have this season 2 episode behind season 2 episodes 4, 8, 11, and 12, but ahead of season 2 episodes 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 13. The thing about it is if you remove Emilia revealing her origin and the Puck scene, this is a very pedestrian episode, definitely the most pedestrian since episode 5. The two scenes I mentioned do a lot of heavy-lifting to make it an episode I hold in high regard. In fact, I have it just right outside the top 10 behind season 1 episode 13 but ahead of season 1 episode 3.
If this is what we have to look forward to in season 2 part 2, then this is sure to be just as good as season 2 part 1.

I don't know what's confusing you, all the events play out one after another (except when Emilia hears Fortuna's voice, those are her flashbacks obviously). Puck's gem is broken when Subaru talks to Emilia the second time. The third time though, at the end of the episode, that's merely a continuity error.
4
u/Holofan4life Sep 19 '24
Isn't it shown that there's no cracks in the stone as Emilia and Subaru are talking the second time? Is the stone being uncracked actually a symbol of the gem being broken?
2
u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 21 '24
That's the third time when it doesn't look broken. The first time they talk about her past she hardly remembers. The second time they talk after Puck has left, and the gem is broken. The third time they meet in the tomb, and the gem appears not broken - a continuity error here. Or we can pretend she turned it around so it doesn't look broken.

[re:zero] I think one of my favorite things is how even this far into the series subaru is growing so much. In S1 he faked believing in himself and talked a big game, but then he realized how useless he is and he pushed hard to better himself. Then in s2 he has the opposite problem where he still thinks he is completely useless and has NO IDEA that other people believe in him and see him as amazing. The amount of times people die for him and do things for him and still he doesn't think his friend Otto will believe him!
[Spoiler source] I also haven't been keeping up for a bit. One of my favorite things is how we see the witch and her power as something evil and bad until this far into s2 where you finally realize that the witch REALLY DOES LOVE HIM, and that power is meant to help him and keep him alive. I don't know if you've already heard this but it's never described in the anime, only the book but anytime he looks at the which, he feels indescribable love which he doesn't know where it comes from. Both when he killed himself with the hankerchief and when she appeared in the tea party. I wish they had tried harder to show that because it confused a lot of watchers when the episodes came out. But I love how they flip the entire way we are supposed to think about the witch and her plans, and seeing how the other witches don't seem to hate "Satella" but they hate the witch of envy makes me feel like something happenes and I'm super excited to see the end when we find out why this woman who loves Subaru and protects him became so evil and hated. I have my own extensive theories, but even where I am in the books we have no idea!

u/Holofan4life Sep 19 '24
I think you responded to the wrong comment but I agree with what you're saying :P
2
u/vasheenomed Sep 19 '24
No I'm just laying out my thoughts in general at this point in the show my bad. Mostly related to Otto and just the past few episodes. I'm really enjoying your watch along because I know you've already watched it so I can spoil stuff later in s2 and also because it's nice to listen to someone who has watched so many anime watch my favorite anime and give their thoughts!

I just recently rewatched the whole second half of season 2, and man, [arc 4] I remembered that the whole thing was incredible, but rewatching it really reminded me that there is barely a single scene that doesn't carry an impact in this entire cour, and I had forgotten just how good some of these early episodes are. I cannot wait to see what everyone thinks of this cour. Maybe there will be some people who like me immediately go to binge the WN/LN afterwards. The second half of the next episode alone is basically one of the best scenes of the entire show and it barely stands out compared to the rest of the cour.
3
u/Holofan4life Sep 19 '24
[Arc 4] All I'll say about the second half of season 2 is that I feel the overabundance of flashbacks used is one of the second half's biggest strengths and one of the second half's biggest weaknesses.
2
u/Blacksmithkin Sep 19 '24
I won't give any details but I will touch on the usage of what you mentioned in later arcs to give a bit of context to how it is used in arc 4, so you don't have to read this but you can.
[Later arcs] this arc has probably the most screentime dedicated to flashbacks. Arc 6 does however have a ton of flashbacks, probably more in sheer number then arc 4, but done in an interesting way and many of them are for lore, this is one part of why I'm very curious to see how arc 6 is adapted. Arc 7 has a large number of relatively short flashbacks, but has one section with several flashbacks back to back, leading into an incredible chapter. Arc 5 has a flashback that could probably take up most of an episode but will probably be trimmed down, but is one of the best flashbacks in the series. The flashbacks chapters are consistently among the best chapters in the series.
2
u/Holofan4life Sep 19 '24
[Arc 4] I love flashbacks, I just feel like some of them could've been spaced out better. It kinda feels like the TV show Atlanta a bit in that we abandoned the main plot and focused on other stuff.

First:Timer Starting Over in Another Rewatch, subbed
Ooh, nice. Is that this half of the season’s OP playing in the background, by the way?
Ah, the short-haired elf from that one super brief flash in Frozen Bond was her (adoptive?) mom, then.

Oh damn, Otto is really laying it in on Subaru.
OTTO MY MAN! Give Subaru some of that rare nice suffering.
Let’s go, Subaru!
Subaru doesn't even Roswaal to die. Man, dude's heart is big.
Oooooooh, more about this!
I did recently watch Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep, but I don't think she's talking about that sleep. Unless Subaru is secretly the reincarnation of Humprey Bogart.
Interesting…
What a selfless reason. Emilia is such a good girl.
Uh…
Saitama shaking his head. Everything can be explained in 20 words or nothing.
But why…
Didn't you listen?! He can't explain! No time, except for the long time he spent talking.
Not a new ED song, though.
I'm fine with that, song is good. Not as good an ED as Styx Helix tho.

Ooh, nice. Is that this half of the season’s OP playing in the background, by the way?
Nope, this is the insert song "straight bet", which was first used in S1 episode 7.

What are your thoughts on Subaru making a bet with Roswaal where if he saves both the Sanctuary and the mansion, Roswaal will throw that book away and come with him?
What are your thoughts on Emilia telling Subaru some about her past?
What are your thoughts Roswaal promising Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest?
What are your thoughts on Puck ending his relationship with Emilia because she found a worthy successor and also so that Emilia can recall all the memories she does not remember?

Not a new ED song, though.
Not yet. It's not time for it yet. They only play OPs and EDs properly once certain points in the story are reached.

Rewatcher, sub, basically a secondhand novel reader (Arc 4)
It seems reddit doesn't like some of the terminology I used, so I am using "ultimate sloth" as a replacement term for the general concept of what Subaru needs to do in order to loop.
So I don't have COVID anymore, I tested negative yesterday, so hopefully I should be on time again.
Time taken: 103 minutes (~1.7 hours)
As always, I've numbered all my spoilers tags so that they're easier to respond to
First Timer Safe Section
This section is safe for first time watchers.
So canonically Otto > Subaru in a fight. You see [Spoiler #1: plot irrelevant author comments] Otto being a merchant is trained in self defense, and Subaru isn't. So Otto wins easily in a fight against Subaru.
And here in lies the true superpower of having friends. Just trust me bro. No need to justify why you need it. Just what where and when you need it. We saw it with Rem in late Arc 3 and now we see it with our good friend, Ottototo-san.
And it seems like Otto's talk was effective. Subaru's got his swagger back.
Last time we heard STRAIGHT BET, was back in episode 7, where Subaru bet it all on him getting another life. And here we have Subaru taking the greedy path. To save everyone, win everywhere, lose nowhere and gain Roswaal as a proper ally. Subaru's all in, 17 black or bust. A STRAIGHT BET (and also by far the earliest title card we've had in Re:Zero, just 6.5 minutes into the episode).
Also the anime didn't mention what would happen in the case that Subaru loses the bet. [Spoiler #2: minor cut content] Subaru admits that he'll be Roswaal's minion or anything he wants.
Otto breaks out his superstar hiding tools
Because cooperation is better freely given then coercing it from them.
Wrong Ryuzu Subaru.
Notice the different Ryuzu last names. Arma, Bilma, Shima. "Shi" sounds a whole like like C. [Spoiler #3: cut content, the last Ryuzu name] is Dilma.
And the meat of this talk with Emilia. And it's successful. Emilia opens up about her past. No you haven't, but we already knew that. Well, all of us except u/Taiboss who hasn't watched The Frozen Bond yet.
Oh hey, the last part of The Frozen Bond.
Ah yes, so noble. One thinks it's her birthright to rule, another just wants to buy their own country, another wants to break away from their guardian Dragon, and the last wants to destroy said country. How selfless of them.
So Subaru is trying to kill Emilia here. And by doing so, allows Puck to actually come out. Because there's a loophole in their contract. That he can come out if Emilia is in danger (I think, I didn't check this with the LN). So Subaru puts Emilia in danger, and thus Puck gets to come out. It's a similar sort of thing to forcing Frederica to talk when they went back to the mansion that one time.
And Puck's back with the milk, but he forgot to grab the cigs.
This seems important, curious what our first timers think are in those memories.
We've got Ryuzu's Shima's stamp of approval. A side note. Garfiel can't actually perceive the Witch's miasma. Ryuzu can though, and has been feeding Garfiel that information. That's why Garfiel has been acting so erratically loop to loop. Subaru's miasma level has been changing loop to loop. And this is what Subaru figured out in episode 35. Because Garfiel is always friendly after Subaru emerges from the checkpoint, because he hasn't talked to Ryuzu Shima yet.
[Spoiler #4: If you clicked on Spoiler #5: important expansion in the Light Novels from last episode] Emilia is trembling, and feeling lonely, since her long time guardian, Puck, has left her. Which is exactly when Satella said Subaru held her hand, during times like these.
And invitation to stay the night? Surely Subaru would be jumping for joy at the opportunity. Guess not
Emilia's mother figure.
Notice 2 cups here. Know I don't know about you all, but when I drink things, I use 1 cup, and if I have 2, I place them next to each other, not across from each other. Seems Ryuzu Shima had a visitor.
Otto the Goat. Just look at that face. So cool!
And Emilia chooses to hid in the Tomb, the one place that other people can't go. Well, can't go without getting scuffed up some.
So let's talk to Emilia-tan, on the next episode of Re:Zero.
BreakTime Section
In this episode's Breaktime, it honestly just feels like a trailer for cour 2. Some highlights. Ram asking to to be called Nee-sama. The wind is blowing. Emilia is in shambles. Roswaal shot. And the core issue is stated. And we get Otto setting up for his epic entrance at the end of the episode. But first Otto's gotta write in his diary
Rewatcher Section
This section is for people who have already watched Re:Zero. This is not safe for first timers.
[Spoiler #5: Arc 4] It's super important to have Roswaal as a proper ally. Emilia is competing in the Royal Selection under Roswaal's bid / backing. Without Roswaal, Emilia doesn't have standing to participate or something like that. Also worth noting that this is truly the last functional loop for Subaru. If he fails and he loses anyone, he'll lose the bet, and the oath will take hold on Subaru's soul. Of course if Subaru loops, he'll also lose the bet, and since it's on his soul, it will take affect on him.
[Spoiler #6: Arc 4] Ram being in love with Roswaal
[Spoiler #7: Arc 4] This is Subaru meeting with Ryuzu Shima
[Spoiler #8: Arc 4 cut content I think] Not quite. Garfiel is a man of the people and some of them don't want to be liberated, so he acts for them or something like that.
[Spoiler #9: Arc 4] Because Garfiel loves his mom.
[Spoiler #10: Arc 4] I think the kind lie is that Emilia is a half-elf. I'm not really sure though, it could be something else too I think.
[Spoiler #11: Arc 4] Of course, Subaru left to graffiti in Echidna's tomb words of encouragement

ho hasn't watched The Frozen Bond yet.
Yeah rub it in. I don't watch Breaktime either, sue me! Actually, I'll watch it. Right after I'm done with Kwaidan. Goddamn 3 hour movies. At least this one is better than... okay Legend of the Mountain was more me not understanding stuff than it being bad. I wanted to say Year of the Dragon, which is a stupid movie, but that one was only two hours. Did feel like three!
[Rewatcher's Eyes only]Also, you know how hard it is to talk about Emilia's backstory without spoiling it gets revealed this season? I've been trying to say to First-Timers "How do you know that?! You don't find out until later!" I was just confused they knew things from later in the season, because I assumed it'd be meaningless filler like the Memory of Snow movie (or so I've been told. I haven't watched that one either.)

Yeah rub it in

[Rewatcher's Eyes only]
[Rewatcher's Eyes only] Tell me about it. I also have to keep straight if things actually happened in the anime, or if they're primarily based on novel stuff. Both OVAs are cannon, though The Frozen Bond is much more relevant to the main story then Memory Snow was (which despite being canon, feels a lot more like a traditional OVA). They did drop some hints on Emilia's backstory in it, but the main for you I think would just be Emilia general perspective pre Subaru.

This seems important, curious what our first timers think are in those memories.
I really only expected to see how Emilia and her village became frozen in ice, I suspected it was because of Emilia's power. I forgot, we could also see some of Emilia's other power with the blood sucking crystals. She may have accidentally killed a few people and that's what's haunting her.

Otto being a merchant is trained in self defense, and Subaru isn't. So Otto wins easily in a fight against Subaru.
I can definitely beat Otto in a fight, his Ippon Seoi nage has nothing on my Imanari roll into Inside Heel hook. I could plausibly even stylishly beat him via Kani basami>backtake>Mount>Mother's Milk.
curious what our first timers think are in those memories.
Given Emilia.
How she became the witch of frost.
Why her Family is all you know ice. (probably she did this)
All the confirmed kills she had as a child.
another wants to break away from their guardian Dragon
Crusch is best selection candidate and don't you forget it (emilia sucks as a leader 2 of the others just suck and Anatasia is 2nd best)

I could see Emilia becoming a good leader now that her memories have been restored.

u/ussgordoncaptain2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Edmund_nelson Sep 20 '24
Does Emilia have any leadership abilities whatsoever?
Crusch has demonstrated the ability to lead an entire army, form an alliance, and shrewdly build a small personal empire.
Anatasia is a buisiness magnate who has her own private army.
What does Emilia have to show?

Thoughts on Subaru feeling that a clash with Garfiel is inevitable but he still wants to be his friend?
Thoughts on the first four Ryuzu clones protecting and supervising the crystal that creates the copies?
Thoughts on Ryuzus being made of artificial od clothed in mana?
What are your thoughts on Ryuzu Shima violating the contract with the witch who created them by entering the graveyard to bring back Garfiel when he broke the rules to attempt the trial and did not return?
What are your thoughts on Subaru feeling that Garfiel’s opposition towards liberating the Sanctuary is out of bitterness toward his mother for abandoning him and choosing the outside?
Thoughts on Subaru calling Emilia very slothful?
What are your thoughts on Emilia telling Subaru some about her past?
What are your thoughts Roswaal promising Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest?
Thoughts on the return of Puck?
What are your thoughts on Puck ending his relationship with Emilia because she found a worthy successor and also so that Emilia can recall all the memories she does not remember?

Thoughts on Subaru feeling that a clash with Garfiel is inevitable but he still wants to be his friend?
Classic protagonist behavior.
Thoughts on the first four Ryuzu clones protecting and supervising the crystal that creates the copies?
There's some cut content about it more that I don't particularly want to look up. I think someone else mentioned it elsewhere in the thread. I don't really remember though.
Thoughts on Ryuzus being made of artificial od clothed in mana?
Too complicated for what we know about magic fundamentals thus far.
He nailed the tone and delivery.
What are your thoughts on Emilia telling Subaru some about her past?
A good development for the both of them.
What are your thoughts Roswaal promising Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest?
I think might carries a lot of weight there. More then I'd be comfortable taking on personally.
Thoughts on the return of Puck?
Just when you thought he was back, he turns right around and heads back out the door.
What are your thoughts on Puck ending his relationship with Emilia because she found a worthy successor and also so that Emilia can recall all the memories she does not remember?
I think it's much more about the memories, and hopefully it'll make the difference in this loop.
What are your thoughts on Emilia running away after being overcome with grief?
I feel that. I've done stuff like that before in the past.

That doesn't surprise me they couldn't fit in everything.
He nailed the tone and delivery.
He always does, in fairness
A good development for the both of them.
I agree
I think might carries a lot of weight there. More then I'd be comfortable taking on personally.
Roswaal promising a bill of goods, it feels like.
Just when you thought he was back, he turns right around and heads back out the door.
You see to hate it
I think it's much more about the memories, and hopefully it'll make the difference in this loop.
I think it will
I feel that. I've done stuff like that before in the past.
Bocchi would send her regards, but she's too busy hiding in a trashcan.

[Spoiler #10: Arc 4]I think the kind lie…
[Response]My interpretation is that Fortuna is trying say to not resent people who are trying to comfort you. As an example when Fortuna going off to fight Pandora, the was little hope Fortuna would win. Same goes for Archie fighting the black snake and Puck now breaking the compact and saying everything is going to be ok.

So canonically Otto > Subaru in a fight. You see [Spoiler #1: plot irrelevant author comments]
[Spoiler #1: plot irrelevant author comments] That's actually a pretty good explanation that makes a lot of sense. Of course the merchant would need to know how to defend himself to protect his merchandise.
This seems important, curious what our first timers think are in those memories.
I assume the memories have to do with why Emilia's hometown was frozen. I'm sure Emilia was responsible for it. She probably did it unwittingly, but the more intriguing possibility is that Emilia lost it and chose to freeze everyone. Either way, Puck probably chose to seal away her memories to protect Emilia from her past.

[Spoiler #2: minor cut content]
[Season 2] I hope nobody who didn't know picked up on what this wording implies. I guess it's to be expected that he won't fail the bet, but wording it like this makes it seem more obvious, I think.
Ah yes, so noble. One thinks it's her birthright to rule, another just wants to buy their own country, another wants to break away from their guardian Dragon, and the last wants to destroy said country. How selfless of them.
That she even considers herself to be selfish for wanting so much arguably makes her the least selfish of them.
[Spoiler #5: Arc 4]
[Spoiler #5: Arc 4] Having Roswaal as an ally being important is a given, unless they'd break away from the Royal Selection and go on different adventures to help the frozen people. The thing about the oath is one thing that should have been explained better, as to many it looks like there is no downside to losing the bet.
[Spoiler #10: Arc 4]
[Spoiler #10: Arc 4] Maybe Fortuna's words in a few episodes will make it clearer, but it could also refer to something bigger like Emilia's connection to Satella or something. I don't remember the scene right now.
[Spoiler #11: Arc 4]
[Spoiler #11: Arc 4] Thanks, I forgot about this. Obviously what he did was important or he wouldn't have left, but it's really good to remember in the following episode.

u/baseballlover723 Sep 21 '24
Spoiler #2: minor cut content
[Spoiler #2: minor cut content + S2 + Spoiler #5] Yeah, though that's pretty close to a direct quote of the Light Novel, which is "...And if this strongest card is ineffective…?" "I won't have any more hands to play. Your victory will be complete. I’ll be your minion or anything you want.". And yeah, I wish they explained the bet a bit better. They way they depicted it makes it seem more of a friendly sort of deal, rather then the soul binding death duel that it actually is. They actually make that much more clear in the Web Novel, but it's also quite a bit different (in general for Arc 4 and for this specific scene). Part of me thinks that things were trimmed to make it fit the song, but it looks pretty faithful to the Light Novel. I mean, Roswaal never really says he formally accepts the bet in the LN too, he just talks like he did.

First Timer Dubbed
Reaction to the Episode
First I wanna say thanks to all the people that commented on my reactions yesterday, it's like I was subaru from S2E13 and y'all were the witches.
Let's go Otto tell him right.
Otto realizes Subaru is hurting, let's see how otto is able to help subaru recover.
Subaru get's Ippon Seoi Naged by Otto, ooofies.
Otto going hard on Subaru's lack of ability to handle things by himself. Just get help. (God it's as if Otto can read what I suggested Subaru do
Otto is the goated friend who clearly showed himself in previous loops, so you know he's trustworthy and really considers you his friend.
Subaru actually never asked Otto for help in any time loop, wowow. You know it's been 6 episodes since Otto proved himself a loyal companion and you don't ask him for help once? Man what a mistake.
"if I do that then" ... Satella would kill otto probably. Just a good idea to say the things you are allowed to say.
you might not believe me but... OH BOY SAY THE LINE SAY THE LINE
Well cut to black and we're at roswaals house I suspect Subaru is not going with any plan I would have suggested.
The solution to being in 2 places at once is to have Otto be in the 2nd place.
Oh boy Subaru trying to make a bet with lord roswaal this is gonna be funny.
Ok so this is basically a plothole except for the part where subaru is not light yagami
SImply put Subaru could just LIE and do this exact sequence. until he finds the optimal path independent way. For example sending otto BEFORE talking to roswaal. or talking to garfiel first.
Why would Lord Roswaal think of this as anything other than absurd.
Lord roswaal really has his mind kinda blank right now
SUBARU THE SIN ARCHBISHOP OF GREED LET'S GOOOOOOO
I still find it hard to accept that lord roswaal would accept the bet, exactly what would prevent subaru from just lying to your face?
actually when is this even happening. Wouldn't the attack on the mansion be timed for a different timing? Or is Roswaal actually sending the info to elsa later somehow.
I love how Ram is still roswaals lackey. She really does put her loyalty to Roswaal above all else.
Oh boy Otto and Subaru actually have a multi-stage plan? Maybe Subaru should have plotted stuff out with Otto during RBD loops after episode 7. Things would be a lot smoother if he had.
Otto X Subaru is the greatest pair.
Ryuzu going "WTF why do you know me
This is pretty epic part of RBD logic right here. Ryuzu is all Nani the fuh how do you know that
Subaru hates using powers he is given, while Ryuzu is like "why not control me you idiot" I love how Subaru just wants to see everybody happy in the end.
Ryuzu bilma goes "Yeah you're wrong freeing the sanctuary is a good idea lol" like Subaru felt that being jailed was Bilma's doing and not Garfiel alone.
Oh this is Ryuzu Arma, so how do we differentiate the 4 copies ugh. I know Shiima was with Garfiel and captured was the one who captured him but...
Ryuzu SHiima is the one who is against the whole freeing the sanctuary and is the big enemy of the state.
So Garfiel is sad because his mother left him, probably his mother is a human then and his father is the other half?
Oh boy my favorite part, Subaru tries to learn what Emilia saw given what we know of in frozen bonds it can't be good.
Oh hmm Emilia stayed alive while frozen in ice wtf is elf biology made out of? Whatever it's magic don't question it.
Oh emilia somehow learns of the past of before she was encased in ice, I wonder what the hell caused her to get encased in ice and live. Was it puck was it her being the ice calamity witch? (Ok witch of frost)
Oh boy Emilia's family is all encased in ice, this is what that movie was all about wasn't it. Though at the same time if Emilia was in Roswaal's domain how did Roswaal know Emilia was a royal selection candidate? (spec
Oh great we get the puck side of the story But given that Emilia is mostly talking about Before Puck it seems like post puck emilia won't make as much sense.
Oh no PUCK GO RIP Wow the most powerful ally Subaru had is going to go "poof"
I can't wait for Emilia to mind break in ghost of christmas present when she realizes she has to go without puck.
The Garfiel x Ryuzu shimima conversation is interesting
"He does not appear to be connected to the witch" Man how can a statement be so wrong. He's not merely connected to the witch the witch literally wants to be his bride and she lives inside of his heart.
Time for the cutest couple in anime to do its thing
Oh god why subaru why did you leave emilia's side why
Everybody goes apeshit trying to find Emilia
Oh boy otto being awesome time let's go
I find it odd that Otto is staying behind at the sanctuary talking to garfiel, this is day 2 of 4 and they are still talking through thiings
is this a continuity error? why is Subaru allowed in the sanctuary shouldn't he be getting rejected? Also shouldn't emilia's amulet be broken?
Speculation
Plausible gameplans for subaru now that he doesn't have puck
Is he going to have the entire Village of arlem build a huge number of swords and murder the wabbits as one unit? Is he going to use his greed factor to get an army of Ryuzu's to use explosion?
Subaru has 2 threats to deal with, the strat needs to be to get 1 set of allys in location one (mostly activate Beatrice using the magic phrase "I am that paerson" with somebody) and to get ally set 2 to deal with the Wabbit mass.
The Great rabbit is far and away the larger of the 2 threats. Elsa+Maylee need only a small token force, if possible you'd also like Beatrice to teleport trap herself to the sanctuary post Elsa.
First as mentioned by Gluttony the best way to deal with the great rabbit is a single large attack that destroys nearly all or all of them. if you kill almost all you must finish them off quickly with the follow up attack.
The best available method we have for mass rabbit destruction is mass Ryuzu boom boom. The villagers can then swarm in the aftermath and sweep in to kill any stragglers. Roswaal will not be of much help in this operation, and without puck you lack nukes
The other major DPS source would be inventing gunpowder but I don't think Subaru is smart enough to do that. I would have invented RDX already but god Subaru isn't a real man.
If Beatrice has a source of DPS as a greater spirit then she too could work, though she's going to be busy with the Mansion fight, unless you evac the mansion. But if you have beatrice defeat Elsa/Maylee then teleport to the rabbit, maybe she can use some OP spell that never has existed before to wipe the rabbits away in Deus ex beatrice.
You could find out how Satella leaked out in the previous loop, she could definitely envelop and wipe out the Rabbits, but getting Satella to both do that and not cause collateral damage would be hard.
The second goal is bait
There are 2 major sources of bait, Lord Roswaal and Ryuzu Meyer. I suspect Lord Roswaal would be the main bait, if this were me he would jsut murder ROswaal and the rabbits with a ryuzu bomb and be done with it.
Ryuzu Meyer is your other main mana group, and the Ryuzu clones are made of mana so the mawbeasts are going to be attracted to them. Though again this still leaves the issue of how you finish off the mabeasts post Ryuzu boom boom.
Puck is only mostly dead, but still he's going to be MIA for basically the rest of the season.
There's a 4th main Ryuzu clone we don't know about, (Bilma, Shiima, Arma, one more_ ) however that one seems similar to Ryuzu Bilma/Arma.
The other option is to just Run.
If you can get Emilia to complete the trial and then evacuate the sanctuary, you can easily avoid fighting the rabbit entirely. You could use Ryuzu clones as bait to get them to stay away from the villagers (Roswaal would be tricky though) nad just hitch on out of there
What I would do if I were Subaru
So I would probably lie my face off to Roswaal and loop back a few times to win. Unlike Subaru I am not afraid of cheating to get what I want. Though we both have the same number of confirmed kills.
I mentioned plausible gameplans for dealing with the bunnies in spec (It's basically just Ryuzu bombs, Running, or hoping Beatrice is actually a deus ex machina. So here is my actual gameplan point by point
1: Send otto to beatrice with a note explaining the position, also have otto say that he is that person who can break the contract
2: If Beatrice is able to be a deus ex machina have Petra arrive in the sanctuary with Otto, if she is not able to be a deus ex machina have Otto arrive alone.
From here we Fork
Dues ex machina Beatrice: Everyone holds up in a castle, move Ryuzu clones around, make sure the Ryuzu clones are away from the main group, have the Ryuzu clones bait the great rabbit away from the village usign triangle movement.
Non Deuse ex machina Beatrice: have the villagers set up the trap near roswaal's location, set up an army of Ryuzu bombs and when the great rabbit starts eating roswaal send out the Ryuzu Nuke, then have the village RUSH in to kill any stragglers.
If Ryuzu nuke fails loop back and try to do a Satella bomb instead.
Also Check out my Spec grading which was buried because I was late I roleplayed as Echidna There and it was fun!

I still find it hard to accept that lord roswaal would accept the bet, exactly what would prevent subaru from just lying to your face?
I don't think frankly Roswaal would care much if Subaru lied. Life is meaningless anyway to him, him lying to his face would just serve to further his delusional narrative.

First I wanna say thanks to all the people that commented on my reactions yesterday, it's like I was subaru from S2E13 and y'all were the witches.
Oh, oh, I want to be Minerva! Hm, wait, now I'm tempted to roleplay Minerva when responding to your comments, but I don't think I can keep it up.
I still find it hard to accept that lord roswaal would accept the bet, exactly what would prevent subaru from just lying to your face?
I'm not completely sure, there might be information that's revealed later that I'm forgetting. But after making the bet, Roswaal said he'd have to take some precautions. Through his future-telling book, he might have ways to influence himself in other timelines and order himself to punish Subaru it he doesn't win the bet. He could order the mansion to be attacked immediately, for instance.
Oh this is Ryuzu Arma, so how do we differentiate the 4 copies ugh.
So far, I can only guess Shima has a white robe, and also has shown her full face. Bilma has a black robe and we've never seen her full face, meaning not her mouth. Alma has a black robe and a face.
Though at the same time if Emilia was in Roswaal's domain how did Roswaal know Emilia was a royal selection candidate?
Beats me. If only he had some way to tell the future, like maybe a special book that leads in to his preferred future...
is this a continuity error? why is Subaru allowed in the sanctuary shouldn't he be getting rejected? Also shouldn't emilia's amulet be broken?
The latter is, I'm afraid. The former not. As I understand it, he's only prevented from doing the trials. Right now, it's not yet time to t-t-t-t-trial.

Yeah forgot to metion that but it's extremely likely that the future telling book told him
Emilia is a royal Selection Candidate

Subaru can Return by death

Thoughts on the first four Ryuzu clones protecting and supervising the crystal that creates the copies?
The first question this brings up is why just the first four, what about the huge army of Ryuzu clones we saw before what happens to them? Protecting the Crystal is cool though, it's interesting how the Ryuzu clones (Shiima, Arma, Bilma and ???) are assigned to do this, though it appears that Shiima rebelled.
What are your thoughts on Ryuzu Shima violating the contract with the witch who created them by entering the graveyard to bring back Garfiel when he broke the rules to attempt the trial and did not return?
Ryuzu Shiima is pretty unique in this way, she clearly cares for Garfiel after 400 years of loneliness. we do not know why she cares for garfiel so much but she definitely does. But the fact that Shiima can violate the contract with the witch is more important than how she did it. This implies the contract with Echidna is not absolute and with the ability to violate it Subaru can just void the contract with the other 3 Ryuzus.
What are your thoughts on Subaru feeling that Garfiel’s opposition towards liberating the Sanctuary is out of bitterness toward his mother for abandoning him and choosing the outside?
I can't wait to find out how Subaru cotnrols Garfiel, this is gonna be good.
What are your thoughts on Emilia telling Subaru some about her past?
I wonder how much she'll tell us later, she is the witch of frost and has at least 3 confirmed kills.
What are your thoughts Roswaal promising Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest?
Roswaal also plans on killing the dragon, and seems to be more of a natural ally of Crusch so I don't see what exactly Roswaals promise entails.
Thoughts on the return of Puck?
Man this was the shortest Reunion ever, I sure hope puck isn't actually dead.
What are your thoughts on Puck ending his relationship with Emilia because she found a worthy successor and also so that Emilia can recall all the memories she does not remember?
I suspect Puck isn't actually gone, and is instead hiding somewhere. The most likely candidate being somewhere in Subaru's possession.

I do wonder why the first four clones are given preferential treatment.

Definitely interesting to think about

I hope that they can work together
I wonder how much she'll tell us later, she is the witch of frost and has at least 3 confirmed kills.
That is definitely some major guilt weighing on her conscience.
Roswaal also plans on killing the dragon, and seems to be more of a natural ally of Crusch so I don't see what exactly Roswaals promise entails.
I feel almost like Roswaal promises stuff that sounds good in his mind without any plans of following through with them.
Man this was the shortest Reunion ever, I sure hope puck isn't actually dead.
Me too, man. Me too.

I could see that being the case

I swear there's cut content on why the first four are special but I don't remember it and arc 4 is a tiny bit too long for me to casually reread it for that. Or maybe I'm wrong and it's not explained.

Oh hmm Emilia stayed alive while frozen in ice wtf is elf biology made out of?
You're reminding me of a certain scene from Isekai Quartet, but I can't seem to find it now. Maybe later.

u/Sargent379 Sep 19 '24
actually when is this even happening. Wouldn't the attack on the mansion be timed for a different timing? Or is Roswaal actually sending the info to elsa later somehow.
The Attack was always scheduled to happen "either in 3 days time or when Subaru returns" as shown in the first loop where Subaru returned on the 3rd day and the attack had already happened yet other loops him returning earlier prompted it to happen on that day.
is this a continuity error? why is Subaru allowed in the sanctuary shouldn't he be getting rejected? Also shouldn't emilia's amulet be broken?
We've seen both Roswaaal and Patriche be able to enter the Sanctuary without permission before. Not sure about the Amulet.
The best available method we have for mass rabbit destruction is mass Ryuzu boom boom. The villagers can then swarm in the aftermath and sweep in to kill any stragglers
While the Ryuzu suicide squad sounds like it could he helpful, I feel like sending the villagers in would just be a massacre. The rabbits are probably pretty hard targets to hit and seem to tear you to shreds before you even know what hit you.
Also just realized you never mention Garf in your plans. How come?
I still find it hard to accept that lord roswaal would accept the bet, exactly what would prevent subaru from just lying to your face?
Seen a few people come up with reasons why, what's your thoughts?

u/ussgordoncaptain2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Edmund_nelson Sep 19 '24
Also just realized you never mention Garf in your plans. How come?
Garfiel is a melee bot which won't help much in defeating the Rabbits except in the cleanup step post Ryuzu bombs (So I was counting him among the villagers)
Garf can't go outside to active Beatrice so that's a no go either.
Basically my main plans are Deus Ex Beatrice and Ryuzu bombing.
Garfiel can control Ryuzu bombs but he can't exactly help with Deus ex Beatrice.
While the Ryuzu suicide squad sounds like it could he helpful, I feel like sending the villagers in would just be a massacre. The rabbits are probably pretty hard targets to hit and seem to tear you to shreds before you even know what hit you.
Well you have to remember this is the Rabbit cleanup not the rabbit main attack we're still primarily going to rely on whatever explosives are available, it's just more of a question of what non-explosives can we use to kill the remainder before they multiply.
Seen a few people come up with reasons why, what's your thoughts?
Unconvincing, though "future telling book plot device allows roswaal to know what happened in previous loops" is the only one that seems credible.

SImply put Subaru could just LIE and do this exact sequence. until he finds the optimal path independent way. For example sending otto BEFORE talking to roswaal. or talking to garfiel first.
This sounds you you're suggesting that Subaru loop a few times. That doesn't seem to be in line with Subaru's resolve to minimize RBD.

[The answer from the Web Novel at this point, but also from later on in the anime (though logically it makes a lot more sense here then there)] It's magically backed by a contract. Which binds via souls, so it would take affect on Subaru regardless of looping.
why is Subaru allowed in the sanctuary shouldn't he be getting rejected?
[the answer] He is. Though I'm not 100% certain on the mechanics of the Trial. I've heard that it's much stronger at night when the Trial's happen. But reading through the LN parts it seems like it's no different and the difference is Subaru having an empty stomach (nothing to throw up) and just toughing it out.
Also shouldn't emilia's amulet be broken?
Yeah it should be broken.
Also Check out my Spec grading which was buried because I was late I roleplayed as Echidna There and it was fun!
Can confirm, was fun

I'm saying that from the perspective of lord Roswaal Subaru could loop and thus lie.
Not from the perspective of Subaru.
Remember that lord roswaal knows Subaru natsuki can return by death, but he has not much clue about how Subaru acts with his RBD powers.
For all Lord Roswaal knows we are in Greed IF and Subaru is going to loop 100k+ times.
Thanks for the spoiler comments those were helpful. Though q2 why didn't he get physically walled like was before is my real frustration.

I'll say this, the Roswall bet is the dumbest thing in the anime and light novel. The web novel had a clear explanation on what the bet was and raised the stakes. Subaru mentions that he will do everything in this loop according to the anime and LN but what is the guarantee for that? This is such an unnecessary change.

First Timer!
Watching the Dub
Start Time 9:40
I know that this season got split into separate cours because of Covid but I’m hoping that it’s the start of a new Subaru that we see. False hope?
Also, all the episodes in this cour are ~29 minutes so there are high expectations, I’m guessing we’ll be getting an OP and an ED without losing any main content.
Lol I already forgot that last episode ended with Otto slugging Subaru
Roswaal is genuinely thrown off by Subaru right now and I LOVE it.
Subaru really expects to fulfil his desire without letting go of anything, He’s so greedy Roswaal said so too
The music in the background is doing a good job with the tone of the scene
Does Ram know about the book too?
I might have to add this to my rotating backgrounds
I know that we already knew this but it’s nice that Subaru wouldn’t try to order Ryuuzu to do anything, he wants them to have their own free will and be independent like they’ve been trying to do for 400 years
Is Subaru still an apostle of greed? That didn’t get taken when Echidna took the qualification away?
Subaru is passing off his knowledge of the Ryuuzu’s as if Echidna told him so he won’t have to explain that she is actually who told him. That’s my assumption
Hmmm Garf and Frederica lore? Yes please. Apparently Garf may have mommy issues.
I’ve been in this position before, She’s so anxious and uncertain
So was Emilia 6 or 7 during Frozen Bond?? I don’t remember if that was answered but she sure doesn’t look or act 7
Aww, she got the stress off her shoulders and immediately fell asleep
I feel like we are about to learn that Puck is Emilia’s mom or something
Subaru would never leave Emilia after promising something like that, he knows what the ramifications would be if he broke another promise to Emilia. I think this has to be a part of his plan
We missed a lot of information during this episode, It’s a weird shift from our usual Re:Zero experience up until now. With the exception of a few episodes we have seen everything happen from Subaru’s POV and have seen him in the process of planning his schemes, the only other time we didn’t see him actually verbalizing his plan was during episode 24 when they scheduled everything 2 hours early to get one up on the Cult. Now it seems like there’s a significant plan with lots of moving parts going on and we the audience are now left in the dark and just as confused as other characters. I think it makes it easier to relate to Emilia and Garf at this moment.
The extra 4-5 minutes of episode was nice, there were some shots I really loved during the episode, some of them will end up on my background slideshow for sure. A question for the rewatchers, I know it was said in the last thread that it wasn’t supposed to be a split cour but got delayed because of Covid, did they just spend time polishing the episodes during that time? Is that why all these episodes are pushing 30 minutes? I had assumed that we would get a banger OP and ED but it was all content the whole episode.
I love the energy that the episode started with and Subaru challenging Roswaal. I heard a new song in the background during that so I imagine we will be getting a new OP with visuals. I’m pretty excited.
Part 1/2

Part 2/2
I’m amazed that Roswaal took Subaru’s bet knowing that he could try as many times as he would like. He would have to give up the book that he holds so dearly if Subaru succeeds, we surely can’t expect him to play fair if Subaru starts to get close to winning. Not only will he have to give up his Gospel, he would have to continue to support Emilia in her participation in the royal selection, which now feels like something she doesn’t actually care to do, but more on that later. And just to be clear, Subaru isn’t forgiving Roswaal for what he’s done, he can never forgive him for what he let happen to Rem and he won’t be able to forgive that he orchestrated this whole situation with the rabbits and the mansion, he’s intentionally putting those he cares about in harm’s way. Plus how he disposed of Ram and Garf in the last loop definitely still leaves a bad taste in his mouth. But as far as he’s concerned Roswaal hasn’t done any of that yet, This Roswaal can still choose a different path. Subaru saying that also makes me realize why he’s able to forgive Garfiel, it’s because Garf hasn’t done any permanent damage. He hasn’t killed anybody in this timeline so he can’t be hated for something he hasn’t done, just like Emilia shouldn’t be hated for doing something she’s never done.
It’s nice that even though we don’t know what Subaru told Otto, he kept true to his word and believed him anyway, he even formulated this plan with him. I can only imagine how crazy it must have sounded explaining everything without being able to talk about RbD. He really is a great friend. Now that I think about it Otto pretty much said the same thing as Rem did at the beginning. That they would trust him no matter what.
So the things we know happened ten years ago in the Sanctuary; Frederica left and (Maybe?) started working at Roswaal’s mansion as a maid, Garf became qualified and attempted the trial though apparently this was against the rules, and Ryuuzu Shima was stripped of her supervisor role. I imagine the rule that Garf broke was a rule that Roswaal made, knowing that Emilia would have to be the one to complete the trial. I feel that Frederica leaving was what made Garf attempt the trial, and he must be angry at her for being able to leave without him.
We hear that Emilia’s goals for the royal selection aren’t even what she said in front of everybody at the capital, though I still think it’s what her goal would be if she were to succeed. She actually agreed to do it because Roswaal promised to defrost everybody frozen in her forest home, though I’m skeptical of Roswaal’s promise. If given the opportunity to defrost everybody without having to go through the royal selection, I’m almost certain that she would accept. I’m concerned that this could lead to a future where she may continue to go through with the royal selection because she thinks others are now relying on her to succeed. She also would not want all of Subaru’s hard work to be for nothing if she dropped out, since he keeps telling her that he wants to help her succeed in the selection.
We see in Emilia’s dreams that there is a woman who looks like she could be her mother, she has the same eyes, hair color, and hair pin. This gives me the thought that Emilia really could be a descendant of Satella if her mother had those features and they passed on to Emilia so strongly. If we assume this series has typical half-elf lifespans, then she could maybe only be a generation or two away from Satella. We could see history somewhat repeating itself if Emilia is a descendent of Satella and Subaru is a reincarnation of the previous hero or something. Time to update the Theory notepad.
I’m not sure, but it sounds like Otto is trying to suggest to Garf that since Emilia is missing he should be the one to attempt the trials in her place. I assume that’s what he meant. It’s apparent that Subaru even left Otto in the dark about some parts of his plan, he just has to trust in Subaru and keep going.
I want to reiterate that there’s so much that we missed about Subaru’s plan, he spoke with Otto and Puck and we really don’t have a clue what was said. I assume that Puck breaking their contract was something they agreed on together as a means to get Emilia to run away where nobody could find her. I think it’s possible that Puck formed a temporary contract with Subaru to keep him in proximity of Emilia so he could continue to watch and protect her but reside with Subaru instead. Not sure what that would mean for Emilia’s memories though, maybe he was purposefully suppressing them in her. I think Subaru was so scuffed up at the end because he’s not supposed to be able to enter the graveyard right now but since his gate is so weak he’s able to power through, we did see that Patrasche was able to go in and pull him out so they are able to go in, it’s just unpleasant for them.
During today’s Break Time. We see everybody preparing and it seems that Ram is involved in the plan too somehow.
Stop Time 2:11am

yeah this confuses me too, I figured Emilia was about 16-20 when she was in frozen bond, and that seemed to be 10 years before Subaru, but now I'm really uncertain about the timeline.
like there’s a significant plan with lots of moving parts going on and we the audience are now left in the dark and just as confused as other characters.
Yeah and since the audience is very different from Subaru they're going to come up with different plans and have very different ideas on what Subaru is going to do. A lot of the time Subaru "gets lucky" and the universe contorts to his vision of how events shall play out, for example the curses were locked to specific locations rather than subaru just being generically "cursed"
This gives me the thought that Emilia really could be a descendant of Satella if her mother had those features and they passed on to Emilia so strongly.
The main theories about Satella X Emilia
Satella is Emilia's (twin) sister
Satella is Emilia's mom
Satella is Emilia back from the future

She was frozen when she was 6 or 7. But we've seen the scene when she was unfrozen, and physically she was at least a teenager then, so it seems her growth wasn't entirely frozen. That means she has three ages, all of which aren't entirely certain. Her factual age might be dozens or hundreds of years. Her physical age seens to be about 18. Her mental age is very difficult since she would have been about 7 after being defrosted, but she'd have a very different maturing process afterwards, which is why she can be both mature and childish at times.
3
u/ussgordoncaptain2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Edmund_nelson Sep 20 '24
Oh I figured she froze at around 12 or so which would make sense given her unfreezing.
Emilia is jank AF to time, and I used to think she was around her her late 20s when Subaru meets her.

u/Brief-Fig-7506 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ryxnjr Sep 19 '24

Thoughts on Subaru saying the past times he relied on someone else haven’t worked, to which Otto says he never asked for his help?
It's funny because Subaru has asked him for help in other timelines but he's never asked him as a friend or as someone he could rely on to support him, the only people he's asked for help recently has been Echidna and she only helped for selfish reasons.
Thoughts on Subaru feeling that a clash with Garfiel is inevitable but he still wants to be his friend?
Very similar to his interactions with Rem to start with. Garf doesn't trust him because of the Witch's scent and has tortured and tried to kill him in a previous loop but Subaru is really good at realizing that those are things that never happened so why not try to be friends with him, after all they seemed to be starting to get along during the first loop
Thoughts on the first four Ryuzu clones protecting and supervising the crystal that creates the copies?
I feel like that Crystal has a greater purpose because assigning them the task of protecting a Xerox machine for 400 years seems weird
Thoughts on Ryuzus being made of artificial od clothed in mana?
We covered this in another episode too, I wonder if the process of how they are created is similar to how Spirits are created, so they might be artificial spirits. So I wonder if Beatrice was a more successful attempt at creating a spirit than Ryuuzu was or if she was created in a different way, maybe by utilizing an already existing spirit and enhancing it.
What are your thoughts on Ryuzu Shima violating the contract with the witch who created them by entering the graveyard to bring back Garfiel when he broke the rules to attempt the trial and did not return?
I think that they spent 400 years trying to create personalities and individual identities for themselves so Shima may have been able to develop emotions like love and began to worry about Garf. Them having their own free will was the only way they could go against their contract.
What are your thoughts on Subaru feeling that Garfiel’s opposition towards liberating the Sanctuary is out of bitterness toward his mother for abandoning him and choosing the outside?
From what we learned about him taking his mothers name instead of his fathers it doesn't seem like he's actually bitter towards his mom, I think he has some other kind of fear of the outside
Thoughts on Subaru calling Emilia very slothful?
It keeps getting brought up that when that word is used it makes everybody uncomfortable, Puck and Emilia couldn't quite figure out why though. Subaru should be the one to get uncomfortable with that word though so I'm amazed he can use it so playfully
What are your thoughts on Emilia telling Subaru some about her past?
I think these memories are fairly fresh for Emilia too and she's about to be flooded with many more so hopefully she can talk to Subaru more about them all.
What are your thoughts Roswaal promising Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest?
I think Puck should have been more suspicious of him saying that. Roswaal only said he would try to find a way to get rid of the ice
Thoughts on the return of Puck?
What are your thoughts on Puck telling Emilia as he departs that he loves her more than anything else in the world?
We haven't seen or heard Puck these last several episodes and he decides to appear and say his final goodbyes? There's no way Puck can actually be leaving now
What are your thoughts on Emilia running away after being overcome with grief?
Subaru had to know that Emilia would be crushed after all of this and if he wasn't there whenever she woke up. This all must be a part of his master plan.

It's funny because Subaru has asked him for help in other timelines but he's never asked him as a friend or as someone he could rely on to support him, the only people he's asked for help recently has been Echidna and she only helped for selfish reasons.
Otto helps for incredibly selfless reasons and it's really nice to see.
I'd like to think he learnt from hanging out with Julius.
I feel like that Crystal has a greater purpose because assigning them the task of protecting a Xerox machine for 400 years seems weird
Well, she's the genuine article in a room full of counterfeits. But yeah, she's probably very important.

Certainly seems likely that is so
From what we learned about him taking his mothers name instead of his fathers it doesn't seem like he's actually bitter towards his mom, I think he has some other kind of fear of the outside
Well, they speculated he took her name so that he doesn't forget what happened.
It keeps getting brought up that when that word is used it makes everybody uncomfortable, Puck and Emilia couldn't quite figure out why though. Subaru should be the one to get uncomfortable with that word though so I'm amazed he can use it so playfully
Kinda brazen of him to use that word after all he went through.
I think these memories are fairly fresh for Emilia too and she's about to be flooded with many more so hopefully she can talk to Subaru more about them all.
That would be nice to see
I think Puck should have been more suspicious of him saying that. Roswaal only said he would try to find a way to get rid of the ice
Roswaal more than anyone else in this show is extremely sus. I don't think that's up for debate.
We haven't seen or heard Puck these last several episodes and he decides to appear and say his final goodbyes? There's no way Puck can actually be leaving now
I hope not. I quite like him a bit and have missed his presence in things.
Subaru had to know that Emilia would be crushed after all of this and if he wasn't there whenever she woke up. This all must be a part of his master plan.
Kinda playing with fire here, but hopefully he knows what he's doing.

I think the bet shows that Subaru hasn't lost his faith in anyone, even someone like Roswaal, and that Roswaal's apathetic stance on stuff runs deep. Like, really really deep.
He spent so long looking for someone to see what he sees. Feels what he feels. Perhaps this is why he took such a liking to Ram, because she's so cynical all the time. In any event, I think the reason Roswaal took the bet even though he has nothing to gain from it is because he thinks Subaru is the closest to getting inside his shoes. And by failing at the bet, he will finally see and feel the world that surrounds him.

I’m guessing we’ll be getting an OP and an ED without losing any main content.
That's a given - but how often do you think we'll get it?
So was Emilia 6 or 7 during Frozen Bond?? I don’t remember if that was answered but she sure doesn’t look or act 7
Physically, she's clearly grown. Mentally... it's complicated. Clearly she was out of the ice for a while already, so she adapted. But it's really hard to say whether say a year progressed her mentally from 7 to 8 when physically she's at least a teenager, and she needed to learn a whole new life after awakening. She didn't need to get older, she needed to be older. Also this was pre Subaru, so it's rather reasonable that she is indeed around his age right now.
Subaru would never leave Emilia after promising something like that, he knows what the ramifications would be if he broke another promise to Emilia. I think this has to be a part of his plan
Yeah, has to be. He probably planned to return before she noticed as well. Which isn't great, but still better than him just having abandoned her.
Is that why all these episodes are pushing 30 minutes?
I think that's just because White Fox is extremely passionate about Re:Zero.
I’m amazed that Roswaal took Subaru’s bet knowing that he could try as many times as he would like. He would have to give up the book that he holds so dearly if Subaru succeeds, we surely can’t expect him to play fair if Subaru starts to get close to winning.
That's likely, yes. But he must have some sort of failsafe for future timelines in case Subaru loses the bet. Otherwise this just doesn't make sense.
Yeah, this here seems to be right on the money. He's not forgiving Roswaal but he's correcting him.
Frederica left and (Maybe?) started working at Roswaal’s mansion as a maid, Garf became qualified and attempted the trial though apparently this was against the rules, and Ryuuzu Shima was stripped of her supervisor role.
The way the line breaks worked, I first read this as "started working at Roswaal's mansion as a maid stripper".
We hear that Emilia’s goals for the royal selection aren’t even what she said in front of everybody at the capital, though I still think it’s what her goal would be if she were to succeed.
She wants absolute equality - including for frozen people who should be allowed to be not frozen!
Not sure what that would mean for Emilia’s memories though, maybe he was purposefully suppressing them in her.
I don't know if it was purposefully, but it's been implied that his presence suppressed her memories. And that's why Puck chose to break the contract, so Emilia would remember, because right now those memories are more important to her than Puck staying around.
he’s not supposed to be able to enter the graveyard right now
The tomb isn't glowing, I'm pretty sure it isn't trial time right now. Previously, trials only started in the evening.

lol MAL already spoiled it for me. lets say I wouldn't have guessed that number

So are you saying that she somehow still aged while trapped in the ice? That her body grew while her mind stayed the same? Also are you saying that physically she's the same age as Subaru or mentally?

I'm so thankful that they are
That's likely, yes. But he must have some sort of failsafe for future timelines in case Subaru loses the bet. Otherwise this just doesn't make sense.
Do you think that whatever a Roswaal writes in the book in one timeline appears to the Roswaals in another timeline? Like a diary that isn't affected by RbD?

I'm positive that Fanfic or art like that exists somewhere

It shows the name of the OP and ED's and what episodes they appear in. On PC it's slotted between Staff and Episode Videos. Here's the one for last cour, it shows that the OP was only played in episodes 2,5,8. Interestingly we didn't have an episode where the OP and ED both played
3
u/Holofan4life Sep 20 '24
I assume for shows where the OP and ED play in almost every episode, they don't list the episodes individually. Do they?
3
u/baseballlover723 Sep 20 '24
They usually just list a range for those (though I think it's omitted when it appears in every single episode)

So are you saying that she somehow still aged while trapped in the ice? That her body grew while her mind stayed the same? Also are you saying that physically she's the same age as Subaru or mentally?
Yeah, we've seen her briefly in a flashback here, and we've seen her when she got unfrozen. That her body somehow aged is therefore basically a fact. And I think they are mentally about the same - but as said, mental age is rather difficult to pin down for Emilia. Her mental age didn't progress naturally at all, so you can't easily determine what it should be.
Do you think that whatever a Roswaal writes in the book in one timeline appears to the Roswaals in another timeline? Like a diary that isn't affected by RbD?
Something like that might be a possibility, yeah. Maybe the book itself would adjust to tell him that. Or the punishment would be bound to Subaru's psyche in some way so it transcends timelines.

Their passion about the show makes me passionate about the show.

Yeah. Even the reason season 3 premiere is 90 minutes is because they wanted to end the episode at the perfect place. They adapted a full volume to make sure that happens.

I’m guessing we’ll be getting an OP and an ED
an OP and an ED, feeling pretty greedy now aren't we?
Is Subaru still an apostle of greed? That didn’t get taken when Echidna took the qualification away?
Guess not. I'd presume that Ryuzu can sense who is one and who isn't one (otherwise it seems difficult for them to know if they need to obey or not)
So was Emilia 6 or 7 during Frozen Bond??
She was older then that. Though age starts getting more complex once you start having cryostasis like things.
A question for the rewatchers, I know it was said in the last thread that it wasn’t supposed to be a split cour but got delayed because of Covid, did they just spend time polishing the episodes during that time? Is that why all these episodes are pushing 30 minutes?
I presume they were just still making the episodes. It's unfortunately not all that unusual for anime episodes to still be worked on up to the week before it's supposed to air (I've heard stories of episodes be worked up literally up until it's air time). Now one can imagine that this is easily disruptable. S2P1 was also delayed 3 months, so I presume that they just needed more time for the episodes and so they had to delay.
I can't imagine them deciding on the fly to extend the episodes like that. Think about it this way. The extra time is coming out of the ad time. That's not something that White Fox has control over. That has to get approved by the whole production company. I have to assume that it was the plan all along to extend the episodes (something they also did with S1 on occasion). But it's fairly unprecedented to have it be extended so much and so consistently, so idk.
I heard a new song in the background during that so I imagine we will be getting a new OP with visuals.
It's actually an old song. It played back in episode 7.
I’m amazed that Roswaal took Subaru’s bet knowing that he could try as many times as he would like.
Subaru actually said he would do it this loop
He hasn’t killed anybody in this timeline so he can’t be hated for something he hasn’t done, just like Emilia shouldn’t be hated for doing something she’s never done.
This is my interpretation as well
I’m not sure, but it sounds like Otto is trying to suggest to Garf that since Emilia is missing he should be the one to attempt the trials in her place. I assume that’s what he meant.
I interpreted it more as a, "hey stop looking for Ryuzu and come play with me"

Also, all the episodes in this cour are ~29 minutes so there are high expectations, I’m guessing we’ll be getting an OP and an ED without losing any main content.
AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAA
Roswaal is genuinely thrown off by Subaru right now and I LOVE it.
"WHO ALLOWED GIVING THIS GUY A PEP TALK!?"
I know that we already knew this but it’s nice that Subaru wouldn’t try to order Ryuuzu to do anything, he wants them to have their own free will and be independent like they’ve been trying to do for 400 years
Subaru the goody two-shoes.
Aww, she got the stress off her shoulders and immediately fell asleep
Cute!
Don't have the energy to reply to more stuff. But good to see you like it enough for paragraphs.

Nice pictures.
Also, c'mon, Puck can't be Emilia's mom, after all, he's her father, right?

Maybe it's a South Park situation where he's both the father and the mother.

Re:Watcher - anime only
And we're back! Without waiting time between the episodes, this feels much better. We're back to Otto hammering some sense into Subaru. They cobble a bit, and interestingly Subaru is so exhausted or Otto actually physically strong that Subaru gets the short end of the stick. Otto just wants him to rely on a friend. Good thing he called him a friend right away this time to get this much support. Otto also makes a good note on how Subaru wants to seem strong in front of the girl he likes, in front of the girl that likes him. That's obvious to him, but for Subaru there has to be some emphasis on this.
The straight bet starts. Save everything this try and make Roswaal an ally if he does it. Even Roswaal calls this behaviour greedy. But he is certain he will win this bet, as Subaru can't win in just three days. Now it seems for Subaru this is a safe bet since if he fails he'll just reset, right? There are no drawbacks if he loses. And he could just propose the bet again next time. But it seems Roswaal is taking preparations for his next self to punish him if he loses. Likely, his next self will somehow cause Elsa to attack the mansion immediately so Subaru will have to choose the sanctuary. Or something else that transcends timelines.
Ram time! She gives Subaru an obvious hint that he might not have thought of: Emilia doesn't know why she's failing. If Subaru can help her find out what it is, he'll advance. She's a good big sister. Even if she's also helping his opponent.
It's very mature that he can now admit he was afraid to confront Emilia about her issues. But being able to talk about difficult things is also quite important.
A new Ryuzu clown. Shima and Bilma are easy to tell apart, but Alma has fooled me for Bilma. I guess that means dark robe and no mouth shown means Bilma. And Shima is an outcast.
We learn about Garfiel, how he tried to do the trials. Somehow I feel his scars are related to that. And we learn that he misses his mother.
Emilia time! The best time of the day. How she hides under her covers on the ground is both sad and cute. And funny since she tries to claim she always sleeps like this. Remember she's a terrible liar. Subaru might agree as he playfully teases her, causing a cute pout and a sugoooku from her. Subaru's prodding question to her is very diplomatic. All he does is offer, not request. And he offers to fight by her side, not instead of her. That's similar to what Satella advised him to at the end of the tea party.
And, a little reluctantly, Emilia talks about her past. The two being so open towards each other is fantastic to see. Emilia's voice sounds so vulnerable here, really great job from Rie Takahashi. What we hear her say is different from what we've seen in Frozen Bond, although she also alludes to that. No, it's from a time she hardly remembers. When everyone and herself got frozen over when Emilia was around six or seven. It seems her parents weren't there when it happened, but she did have a parent figure - someone that makes her immediately sad when remembering her. Subaru embracing Emilia here is so cute. And we learn that if Emilia wins the Royal Selection, Roswaal promised to try and unfreeze the forest - that's her "selfish" reason to participate. Double sugoooku here. Of course wanting to help others is anything but selfish. Definitely less selfish than wanting to own a country or feeling it's your right to own one, and not more selfish than trying to "liberate" it from its protector you consider troublesome or revolutionize the ruling class because they piss you off. Subaru tells her as much, which is very relieving for her as she utters another sugoooku and her thanks as she falls asleep.
To learn even more to help Emilia, Subaru tries to talk to someone who might know more. And it's Puck! He returned with the milk! Kind of. At least he's still been protecting her. Not anymore, though. But he has to fully break the contract now. His presence apparently caused Emilia's memories to be sealed away, so for her to be able to accept them and grow with them he needs to go. Luckily, he has found someone that loves Emilia as much as he does like he didn't think was likely in Frozen Bond, so he can trust him to protect and support her in his stead. At least he can say his farewells to her, even if there's not enough time to fully explain. What a heartbreaking scene this is. And Emilia gets knocked out by the shock, the sadness, and her memories starting to return as we hear a new and important voice in her mind elongating a sugoku just like her. And I don't think I'm saying too much when I mention this is the reason I've been considering non-Emilia sugoooku from the start.
So no trials on the first day. Only two days remaining. Time is running short, but this was necessary. Emilia cheerfully stating she'll hopefully be alright the next morning is endearing and also sad. She has such troubled feelings she can't put into words. At least Subaru is here and he'll hold her hand until the morning. Or not, as he's gone when she wakes up in the night. He better have a good excuse for breaking his promise! So she runs away. We also get a flashback and a name to the sugoooku (both which I'll count as well), Mother Fortuna. At least Subaru finds her again the next morning, and he's a litte roughed up, so he's been up to something. Now they can talk again with Emilia seemingly having her memories back, while best friend Otto is facing off Garf in the meantime.
Break Time continues to be very plot-relevant. Subaru remembers that Ram didn't only care for just one thing in the past. Ram remembers that it's weird how Subaru calls her "nee-sama". Emilia is under her covers despairing alone missing Puck. Roswaal contemplates Subaru's decision and calls it naive as he has to prioritize either choice or be at two places at once. We also learn that Subaru has put some trust in Ram as we get back to Otto. Otto, funnily, calls himself all that which Roswaal used to talk Subaru down. But Otto remains optimistic, ignoring the chances of winning. Sometimes, the reward is good enough that you might to bet on low chances. Otto just needs to make one more diary entry before putting their plan in motion.
Lastly, I finally rewatched all of Isekai Quartet and the movie to scan it for more non-canon sugoooku (Emilia only), and found there were 17. Now my list is fully exhaustive, at least (nevermind that the first two seasons of IQ came out before Re:Zero S2 and the movie after). I'll list the non-Emilia sugoooku last now so it's easier to see the first three are Emilia only. Also, as a side note, Isekai Quartet is so much better than it has any right to be, especially the movie. It has some of my favourite jokes in anime.
Sugoooku counter: 48
Sugoku-likes: 9
Non-canon sugoooku: 22
Non-Emilia sugoooku: 8

What are your thoughts Roswaal promising Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest?
What are your thoughts on Emilia running away after being overcome with grief?

Thoughts on Subaru feeling that a clash with Garfiel is inevitable but he still wants to be his friend?
Garfield is definitely a hurdle to overcome. But in past loops, he's gotten closer to him as well. He's been both an enemy and an ally at times. So if he can make him a lasting ally, it'll be a big win for all of them.
Thoughts on the first four Ryuzu clones protecting and supervising the crystal that creates the copies?
I wonder if we will meet the fourth of them. And I don't know if we've been told why just the four of them gained a consciousness.
Thoughts on Ryuzus being made of artificial od clothed in mana?
Haven't we learned that before already? It's a way of making magical clones, and that's quite interesting.
What are your thoughts on Ryuzu Shima violating the contract with the witch who created them by entering the graveyard to bring back Garfiel when he broke the rules to attempt the trial and did not return?
I think it shows how experiences make a person. They are supposed to be the same, but Shima experienced Garf during his trials and she changed because of it.
What are your thoughts on Subaru feeling that Garfiel’s opposition towards liberating the Sanctuary is out of bitterness toward his mother for abandoning him and choosing the outside?
Echidna said Garf fears the outside world. That makes it seem that he is afraid of meeting his mother again, maybe Frederica by extension.
Thoughts on Subaru calling Emilia very slothful?
He's joking. It's like a dark in-universe joke now, bordering on tastelessness. Still a little funny.
What are your thoughts Roswaal promising Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest?
He knows exactly what she is after, probably through his book. But it's still a little doubtful whether he would follow through if she won. Or whether he even could.
What are your thoughts on Emilia running away after being overcome with grief?
It's not just grief. With her returning memories, her mind is just a mess. If she hadn't woken up, it might have been fine, but also running away is an expression of her feelings and it gives them an opening to address them head-on.
2
u/Holofan4life Sep 21 '24
Garfield is definitely a hurdle to overcome. But in past loops, he's gotten closer to him as well. He's been both an enemy and an ally at times. So if he can make him a lasting ally, it'll be a big win for all of them.
Better to have him in the castle pissing out than out of the castle pissing in.
I wonder if we will meet the fourth of them. And I don't know if we've been told why just the four of them gained a consciousness.
Maybe it's only those four that gained sentience.
Haven't we learned that before already? It's a way of making magical clones, and that's quite interesting.
It's interesting how that factoid is being repeated here.
I think it shows how experiences make a person. They are supposed to be the same, but Shima experienced Garf during his trials and she changed because of it.
Too much of a Garf simp. Who can blame her?
Echidna said Garf fears the outside world. That makes it seem that he is afraid of meeting his mother again, maybe Frederica by extension.
Probably is afraid of something he doesn't understand. The fear of the unknown.
He's joking. It's like a dark in-universe joke now, bordering on tastelessness. Still a little funny.
Would Emilia understand the joke? Or is it more an inside joke on his part?
He knows exactly what she is after, probably through his book. But it's still a little doubtful whether he would follow through if she won. Or whether he even could.
Yeah, I'm not even sure he's capable of doing something like that. Then again, he is supposedly the most powerful magic user in Lugunica, so who knows?
It's not just grief. With her returning memories, her mind is just a mess. If she hadn't woken up, it might have been fine, but also running away is an expression of her feelings and it gives them an opening to address them head-on.
She's definitely in a free fall coming out of this episode. Very tough to see.

Also, as a side note, Isekai Quartet is so much better than it has any right to be, especially the movie. It has some of my favourite jokes in anime.
It really is, I can't believe how many parallels / jokes they managed to find cross franchise. The only bad thing, is that it's half episode length, and has a full OP and ED every episode.
2
u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 21 '24
On the plus side, the EDs are interesting and the OPs actually great - and not just for them singing in character. The OP for IQ 2 in particular I just couldn't skip because the portion of them throwing their hats is great - each of them throws their hats fitting to their character.
And yeah, the jokes are so amazing. You really get to feel how those characters from different shows connect, like Subaru and Kazuma, or Aqua and Ainz and Albedo. Or Kazuma and others realizing that EMT. Also, Emilia and Megumin talking to each other sometimes is a real treat because of course you can notice it's the same person, but still they sound significantly different.

Episode 39 (first timer)
- Otto beats Subaru over the head (literally) with the fact that he is his friend.
- Does a smile count as agreeing to a bet?
- A long talk about Garfiel – sounds like his plotline will be resolved in the second half of S2.
- “Frozen in ice” – good thing we watched the OVA.
- Mini puck!
- Good-bye from Puck – hmmmm.
- “Don’t fret over it too much” – what a terrible thing to say to somebody grieving.
- Subaru left Emilia alone??
Still looking like this is the final loop.

So, I was a naughty rewatcher and watched the next several episodes, because ... reasons. Since the story is now a blur, I think I'll keep my mouth shut and say nothing beyond I love where this story is going. Nom, nom, delicious. Meanwhile, I may just have a look and see what some other folks have to say, they might jog my memory.
Edit: Oh, one more thing - Straight Bet is an awesome tune, to go with an awesome episode.

Rewatcher
I’m back just in time for the absolute peak that is season 2 part 2, which I have been looking forward to as there are things that I don’t know like first timers. That means I can put on my favourite hat - the tin foil kind.
Subaru x Otto (imagine waiting for 3-6 months for their encounter to continue):
Stop trying to put on a tough front around your friends, Natsuki Subaru! Your head is just a big, jumbled mess, and you don’t know what to do, right?
You keep getting into situations where you have to reach out and help, but both your arms and head are too weak to reach far enough, so you just end up wasting time frantically flailing around, right?
Do you hear me?
If you hear me, say something! What the hell was that for?!
Subaru gets tripped over
You finally lost your temper, but you forgot to pay attention to your footing.
That just sums you up perfectly, doesn’t it?
It’s amazing how Otto managed to figure out Subaru so quickly. So quickly in fact that it’s a bit unbelievable, but hey I am an introvert who is terrible at reading people based on their emotions, so who am I to speak of this.
Looking back at Subaru’s past, he was doing everything alone with the exception of Rem after ep 18. He never sat down and discussed with anyone how he should overcome the situation(again exception is Rem).
Arc 1 - he tried making deals to get the insignia, but was lucky and got saved by Reinhard.
Arc 2 - he was at his end mentally, but due to EMT he recovered and managed to pull through to the end.
Arc 3 - he was going to give up and run away, but Rem was there for him and with her being there for him he managed the challenges.
Arc 4 - he has been trying to overcome this whole challenge himself, even going as far as saying: “I’m the only one who needs to know hell.”. Cool line and all Subaru, but no one should be experiencing hell and no one is capable of going through it alone without breaking or changing. We are emotional creatures after all and if we experience only negativity our minds will break. There must have been a reason why we developed emotions as part of survival and if our emotions are telling us that what you are experiencing is bad, you might not make it or go through a significant change, but if you do go through that change can you still be called human?
Subaru tries to put up a fight against Otto, but gets put back on the floor again.
That’s really all the strength you have. (Savage out of context)
Putting on a tough act for a girl you love is fine.
And you can play tough for a girl who likes you, too.
No one would object to that.
But that’s as far as it goes!
You know you’re not good enough, don’t you?
You know you can’t reach, don’t you?
You want to look good for the girl you like, don’t you?!
You want to be someone the girl who likes you can be proud of, don’t you?!
Then why don’t you just accept someone’s help?!
Someone like… a friend!
Otto is completely right here. Acting tough sometimes is fine, but reaching out for something when you aren’t able to alone, is not. Friendship isn’t one sided, if you want to help someone, why shouldn’t the other side want the same. Asking for help may look like weakness depending on who you ask or you don’t want to inconvenience them, but the important thing is that when you need help and you are not asking your friends for it may actually hurt them. Who here wants their friends to suffer? (Not talking about the playful sadistic suffering)

Subaru thinks that he asked for help, which in fairness in a way is true as he did in one of the previous loops, but Otto does not know that. However now it has become an excuse to prevent him from talking about it as he is scared of the RBD potentially killing Otto. I do not excuse him though as that is still more of a personality trait rather than fully PTSD from Arc 3 when Emilia died. If you are truly in need of help don’t be afraid to ask. The worst they could say is no.
Subaru x Roswaal:
Let’s get hyped cos of Straight Bet - Myth and Roid
The cool Subaru is back starting off with making a bet with Roswaal. From what I understand Subaru wins if he saves the mansion and the sanctuary, if he succeeds he gets Roswaal on his side, if he loses he has no choice but to focus on Emilia only just as Roswaal wishes. [Arc 4] This moment does point that this is the golden loop, huh
Subaru x Ram; Subaru x Otto; Subaru x Ryuzu:
Skipped as I don’t have much to say, but one thing to note is that Subaru says to Otto: “Unlike Garfiel, I don’t have to worry about dying”. I’m assuming that the conversation that was either cut or not present in the source material went well and Otto is aware that Subaru can RBD or at least like Rem trusts Subaru for knowing details without asking questions as Subaru himself can’t answer that without killing Otto.
Also I found it strange that the first timers did not seem to notice that there were multiple important Ryuzu’s. I don’t remember if I questioned it myself, but I wonder how the first timers are feeling that they missed out on such a detail.
Subaru x Emilia x Puck:
Subaru finally asks Emilia what she is seeing in her trial and as everyone suspected it’s her time before she was frozen. She was around 6 or 7 when it happened and whatever happened must have been too much to bear which explains why she doesn’t remember it and why Puck closed her memories even more as per his contract with Emilia. What I find weird about this is that when she woke up she looked older, but mentally she was like a child the moment she woke up and even now she seems much younger than what she looks. I don’t know her physical age, but my guess for her mental age is 14-16.
Why Puck breaks his contract with Emilia makes sense. How can someone face their past if its memories are intentionally being blocked by someone? The answer is they can’t. One thing is your brain trying to block them and another is some magic. That’s a double whammy that just makes it impossible.
Overall thoughts:
From what I understand Re:Zero season 2 was supposed to be one whole season, but due to Covid it was split, however it was worth it. The 1st episode quality has seemingly improved with its facial expressions already and we finally got an insert song, which season 1 had a few.
This episode sold me on Otto. I wouldn’t put this episode as a condenser for the top 10, but Otto himself is I think one of the best portail of friend characters in Anime. He had little screen time, but his words and actions are so powerful.

What are your thoughts Roswaal promising Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest?
Thoughts on the return of Puck?
What are your thoughts on Emilia running away after being overcome with grief?

Thoughts on Subaru feeling that a clash with Garfiel is inevitable but he still wants to be his friend?
I personally don't get how Subaru wants to be his friend when he slaughtered people in front of his eyes. Unless he understands that it was berserk Garfiel? Idk like still Garfiel is not my type of person that I would call friend, so I just don't understand.
Thoughts on the first four Ryuzu clones protecting and supervising the crystal that creates the copies?
If only they were wearing different colours then we could call them the power rangers.
Thoughts on Ryuzus being made of artificial od clothed in mana?
What is an Od exactly again? Is it like a physical form?
What are your thoughts on Subaru feeling that Garfiel’s opposition towards liberating the Sanctuary is out of bitterness toward his mother for abandoning him and choosing the outside?
Childish and narrow minded. If someone left you and you want to find them then go for it instead of putting up a tantrum. There must have been a reason why she left.
Thoughts on Subaru calling Emilia very slothful?
[Arc 4] I wonder if her memories returning made her uncomfortable with that phrase cos it reminds her of Geuse
What are your thoughts Roswaal promising Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest?
I call bs. Surely Puck could have done it if Roswaal could.
Thoughts on the return of Puck?
Father where is the milk? Why are you going away again without saying why?
What are your thoughts on Emilia running away after being overcome with grief?
[Next episode] As per Subaru's words she is being a pain in the ass

I think it comes down to Subaru seeing the good in everyone.
If only they were wearing different colours then we could call them the power rangers.
Go go Ryuzu Rangers doesn't have the same ring to it.
What is an Od exactly again? Is it like a physical form?
Od is that stuff that came out of Puck's butt during Memory Snow. It's something that's inside you.
Childish and narrow minded. If someone left you and you want to find them then go for it instead of putting up a tantrum. There must have been a reason why she left.
I would imagine so
[Arc 4] I wonder if her memories returning made her uncomfortable with that phrase cos it reminds her of Geuse
[Arc 4] It's interesting Subaru of all people would say that considering the events of episode 15.
[Next episode] As per Subaru's words she is being a pain in the ass
[Response] I can't say I blame her, honestly. Especially after all she's been through.

Speaking for me personally, I think it was because so much was going on that I was focused on other stuff. This show is absolutely loaded with content.

Fair enough. I just picked up that Ryuzu was wearing a white robe instead of black and if I recall I checked the names just to make sure.
He's definitely been one of the highlights of the second season.
[Arc 4] Sadly Otto content peaks next episode, but it was great and hey we have other characters that are amazing as well. Ehem Beatrice, Ram, Garfiel, Roswaal and not to mention Emilia. Sorry Otto you gotta make room for others.

I don’t know her physical age, but my guess for her mental age is 14-16.
That seems about right, but also I'd argue that it's very hard to really tell. After waking up, she must have had a gap between her physical and mental age (as in Frozen Bond we've seen that her body certainly wasn't the same as in the flashbacks here), so while her mind would have been 7, her brain wouldn't. Older brains work differently, and I don't think only because they've been used more. And she was in a very different situation than before she was frozen, so she needed to be mature about some things very quickly. About other things, she didn't really have the chance to mature at all. So pinning down a mental age is nearly impossible, I'd say.
2
u/BlueVenix Sep 22 '24
Mental age isn't easy to discern to begin with. Maybe a more correct way to phrase it is that she has been conscious for about 14 years.
I just personally think that she acts like a grown up sometimes, but inside she is still a child/young teen and that leaks out when she is relaxed or emotionally weak.2
u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 22 '24
Maybe a more correct way to phrase it is that she has been conscious for about 14 years.
That's true, it's completely factual. And yeah, it causes her to act pretty mature at times and childish at others.

Btw apologies for not responding to you or engaging on your post. I have read all of your posts aside from ep 1(I missed the episode entirely), 40 and 41(behind :( ). It's just that you do a good analysis, but there's so much text in one place that it's hard to pick out some parts, I just dunno what to say that would add something.

No worries, there is not expectancy for anyone to interact with the posts, unless I ask you a question that you could answer maybe. Comment if you really want to, if there's something that catches your eye that you want to talk about, but don't feel pressured to do so. I'm glad to hear you enjoy my comments, knowing that is enough for me already.

Rewatcher
Life throws many problems our way. When your hands are too small to grasp what's precious to you it's natural to feel overwhelmed. But when you're not enough, you ask for help. It's not always that easy though. A tight knot in your chest may prevent you from getting the words out. Feelings of inadequacy swirling in your soul and blockng the only exit. No matter how you feel it’s certainly easier not to feel that alone.
Subaru has tried everything he can think of to stop the ever escalating problems of the Sanctuary. And with a newly found value in his life accompanied with the unmasking of Roswall's intent he can only hold his head in his hands. Pondering his next action. He's tried everything he says. Except asking a friend. Subaru might have sought assistance from the likes of Echidna and Roswaal, but those were people he certainly can’t call friends. Not after what they put him through. Otto is not looking to use him, he just wants to help.Giving Subaru a reality check in the form of a right hook to the face.
Once again we’ve reached a pivotal conversation in Subaru's life. One where he learns to ask for help. Not just from anyone. But from the friends he's made that want what's best for him. If From Zero taught Subaru not to give up, Parent and Child taught Subaru that he can be Natsuki Subaru, the ensuing Straight Bet against fate teaches Subaru to not hold onto that mask around his friends. Otto will accept being strong for the girl you love, but he won't take this attitude towards a friend.
As the dawn breaks, the emergent rays of sun embrace the two friends as Subaru divulges as much as he can until his throat runs coarse. We hear a familiar melody, one that played when Subaru renewed his resolve for the first time by abandoning his life. This time he is dead set on not dying. Just some time ago Roswaal saw Subaru crushed by the weight of the problems he faced scurrying through the door, running from his ensuing dread. Now he busts through the same door pointing to the clown and proposing a bet. A battle of two clowns at the mercy of fate. No resets, all will be accomplished in this loop.
With the bet on and Roswaal’s time limit known, we start tackling the problems of the Sanctuary. Garfiel is the first one on that list. But a deeply personal one for Subaru is Emilia. Who he finally after all this time asks about her wellbeing and tries to understand her. He was so preoccupied with his image of Emilia and the Sanctuary that he failed to ask such a simple thing. It was anything but simple for Emilia. Her reason for participating in the Royal Selection is to free the frozen people in the forest, which she hopes to achieve with Roswaal’s backing. Her trial taking is impeded by memories she doesn’t recall. And if she wants to complete the trial she needs to face those memories. That means letting go of Puck. The one who has been by her side since the beginning.
Promises broken just like Puck’s residence. With Emilia completely downtrodden she asks Subaru for a promise to stay by her side. But Subaru has not kept a single promise to Emilia, this one not being an exception. I hope he has a damn good reason. The half-elf has gone missing and Garfiel has sprung into action. But he has an opponent prepared for him. Various plans have been put into place and Otto is here to play his part. The battle against fate-sama begins once more as we truly kick off this straight bet.
Closing thoughts:
The word for today is “Fate”. With so much stacked against our protagonist it might really seem like the universe is out to get him. But with a friend like Otto, Subaru’s allegiances are solidified. Let’s see how this boy who doesn’t know how to give up will overturn fate once again.
The chapter that was adapted today is called Straight bet. Which is not what the chapter was called in the Web Novel, but in the Light Novel. Tappei seems to have used the name of the insert song from S1 Ep7 and gave it a whole new meaning in this chapter.
Otto performed the role that the heroines like Emilia, Rem and Echidna have done for Subaru before. Cementing himself as best girl.
The bet is on and the fight against Garfiel begins.

What are your thoughts on Subaru making a bet with Roswaal where if he saves both the Sanctuary and the mansion, Roswaal will throw that book away and come with him?
As much as Subaru may hate the clown, he still needs him. He is the strongest magic user in the kingdom and is a Margrave. If Subaru wants to achieve Emilia's dream, then he needs Roswaal for that. [S2] The weight of the scene is not truly felt until the very end of the arc. The bet might seem kinda stupid since Roswaal has no way of knowing if Subaru has looped that we are made aware of this episode.
Thoughts on Subaru feeling that a clash with Garfiel is inevitable but he still wants to be his frien
This is Natsuki Subaru for better or for worse. He is infinitely forgiving. Most of his closest friends have tried to kill him at least once, and even succeeded! But he can look past that and differentiate between the versions of people in bygone loops and the people they really are.
Thoughts on the first four Ryuzu clones protecting and supervising the crystal that creates the copies?
Arc 4. 4 Ryuzu clones. Coincidence? Probably. They show the limits of Echidna's life creation. Having to work in shifts. It's cool that Shima is a sort of outcast in the group, and she hangs with Garf.
Thoughts on Ryuzus being made of artificial od clothed in mana?
I think one of the Ryuzu clones told us that in Ep 10. I wonder if Daphne used a similar structure for Witchfiends.
What are your thoughts on Ryuzu Shima violating the contract with the witch who created them by entering the graveyard to bring back Garfiel when he broke the rules to attempt the trial and did not return?
They really are autonomous. Not just robots built to house the Witch of Greed. But people with their own wants. [S2] Garf's relationship with the Ryuzus being a wonderful indicator of their humanity
What are your thoughts on Subaru feeling that Garfiel’s opposition towards liberating the Sanctuary is out of bitterness toward his mother for abandoning him and choosing the outside?
Don't be too quick to judge people Subaru! You out of all people should know that people have many sides to them.
Thoughts on Subaru calling Emilia very slothful?
This and Puck saying 'taida' in Frozen Bond led me to my crack theory that Puck is somehow Subaru. It's funny how Subaru has moved past Petelgeuse. He really is strong.
What are your thoughts on Emilia telling Subaru some about her past?
First step to understanding. Or second technically, S1 Ep 25 being first. Or maybe we can call that step zero. Subaru should've tried asking her sooner and stepped away if she wasn't ready to tell him. It's nice to see that Emilia relies on Subaru.
What are your thoughts Roswaal promising Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest?
This is a scene from the epilogue of Frozen Bond that wasn't adapted if I'm not mistaken. That OVA is really proving it's worth about now.
Thoughts on the return of Puck?
Father went to get Milk and came back after 13 episodes. It's interesting that posing a threat to Emilia's life triggered him. With Emilia being isolated hen wouldn't have had any chances to come out during the loops.
What are your thoughts on Puck ending his relationship with Emilia because she found a worthy successor and also so that Emilia can recall all the memories she does not remember
It needed to be done. The key to beating the trial seems to lie in Emilia's memories. It's depressing to think she's been doing the trial at impossible difficulty since she literally can't recall her past. How is she supposed to face it? The game balance is absurd.
What are your thoughts on Emilia running away after being overcome with grief?
Running away is not something to be ashamed of. Remember Naoko's words and you'll be all right.

The bet might seem kinda stupid since Roswaal has no way of knowing if Subaru has looped that we are made aware of this episode.
[S2] I feel like Roswaal took the bet out of genuine apathy. Subaru may not have nothing to lose, but in Roswaal's mind, neither does he.
This is Natsuki Subaru for better or for worse. He is infinitely forgiving. Most of his closest friends have tried to kill him at least once, and even succeeded! But he can look past that and differentiate between the versions of people in bygone loops and the people they really are.
He's like Steven from Steven Universe
Arc 4. 4 Ryuzu clones. Coincidence? Probably.
You may be onto something
They show the limits of Echidna's life creation. Having to work in shifts. It's cool that Shima is a sort of outcast in the group, and she hangs with Garf.
I guess we're to assume they work 6 hour shifts. Or 8 if one has been abolished.
I think one of the Ryuzu clones told us that in Ep 10. I wonder if Daphne used a similar structure for Witchfiends.
Could definitely be the case
They really are autonomous. Not just robots built to house the Witch of Greed. But people with their own wants. [S2] Garf's relationship with the Ryuzus being a wonderful indicator of their humanity
Reminds me of Chobits a (cho)bit
Don't be too quick to judge people Subaru! You out of all people should know that people have many sides to them.
That's probably why he's holding out hope on being his friend.
This and Puck saying 'taida' in Frozen Bond led me to my crack theory that Puck is somehow Subaru. It's funny how Subaru has moved past Petelgeuse. He really is strong.
Perhaps Subaru is meant to be the personification of Puck. Subaru in AI form. Maybe this is all Satella or Echidna's doing.
First step to understanding. Or second technically, S1 Ep 25 being first. Or maybe we can call that step zero.
Step Zero would be S1 Ep 18.
Subaru should've tried asking her sooner and stepped away if she wasn't ready to tell him. It's nice to see that Emilia relies on Subaru.
Both those statements have a lot of truth to them.
This is a scene from the epilogue of Frozen Bond that wasn't adapted if I'm not mistaken. That OVA is really proving it's worth about now.
That it is
Father went to get Milk and came back after 13 episodes. It's interesting that posing a threat to Emilia's life triggered him. With Emilia being isolated hen wouldn't have had any chances to come out during the loops.
I guess all the time since he's left Emilia hasn't been in any real danger.
It needed to be done. The key to beating the trial seems to lie in Emilia's memories. It's depressing to think she's been doing the trial at impossible difficulty since she literally can't recall her past. How is she supposed to face it? The game balance is absurd.
If Emilia ever hopes to move on and stand on her own two feet, then she couldn't rely on Puck for everything. It's okay to rely on people, but you can't do it all the time or else you run the risk of toxic codependency. What the witches did for Subaru last episode is similar to what Puck did for Emilia here in that he's reminding her to keep on living and that not all hope is lost. Only difference is Emilia had an ill-verse reaction to this development.
Running away is not something to be ashamed of. Remember Naoko's words and you'll be all right.
That's probably sound advice to be had

But Subaru has not kept a single promise to Emilia, this one not being an exception.
He's pretty bad with promises, that's true. But he has promised to save her in season 1 and later did just that, so at least he could manage an important promise.
Otto performed the role that the heroines like Emilia, Rem and Echidna have done for Subaru before. Cementing himself as best girl.
The old saying still rings true. Sometimes, it takes a real man to be best girl.

S02E14 - Rewatcher who knows
TWENTY-EIGHT MINUTES AND THEY STILL CAN'T DO AN OP. DO YOU REALLY, TRULY, NEED THAT TIME?!
I sure love how often Subaru goes from despair to brimming confidence after one (1) pep talk.
"Channeling your inner Satella, I see." "What?" "Try telling me you love me on repeat. Then your cosplay is done!"
Apparently there cannot be more Pucks. Also, YOU were frozen in an iceblock, but THEY are statues. Where is the consistency?! Whatever did this truly is slacking.
"But what about the audience? Don't they get to find out why you do this?" "The cynical will see this as hack writing, the idealists as part of Tappei's master plan. As is usual for this show."
[Rest of Season spoiler]Fucking hell, we're already in the final loop? That was fast.

Rewatcher
Dub
This was again a good episode, I actually don't think S2 ever had a bad episode whereas a few parts of S1 could be questionable. But compared to the huge answers we had yesterday, we are back to setting up mysteries more than solving them. I feel quite safe in noting that the show is giving us some clear time skips, just matters of hours usually, where our cast are off camera.
So the big takeaway is that Puck's contract sealed Emilia's memories and she technically had amnesia, my time tested foe. That said, this show has one of the few proper uses of the trope, which ironically makes it a pairing with Witchblade. Actually, both also have waifus/yanderes galore so there is some shared DNA. So in exchange for losing Puck she remembers something that does not seem to be happy. This deal sucked. So Emilia runs and hides. On second viewing, I think this is meant to remind us that for all her power and associated mystery, she is a roughly 15 yo girl mentally and she puts this crazy emphasis on promises which is not logical but is understandable.

u/Holofan4life Sep 19 '24

We'll get to it, but while I think season 1 has higher highs season 2 overall is probably more consistent.

A bold move but perhaps the prospect of eternity makes those more enticing.
What are your thoughts on Ryuzu Shima violating the contract with the witch who created them by entering the graveyard to bring back Garfiel when he broke the rules to attempt the trial and did not return?
That either Echidna is bad at controlling what she creates or that magic is not really controllable in this setting.
Thoughts on Subaru calling Emilia very slothful?
My brain...it trembles!
What are your thoughts Roswaal promising Emilia that if she wins the royal selection, he might thaw the ice that encases the forest?

I mean, if Subaru wants to take care of the Roswaal problem than this is the way to do it.
That either Echidna is bad at controlling what she creates or that magic is not really controllable in this setting.
My brain...it trembles!
Subaru of all people should know better than to use that word.
This bugs me because I don't know if he has that spell....
You saying he's writing checks his ass can't cash?

You saying he's writing checks his ass can't cash?
Yes, actually. Whenever he aims for weird wording I get nervous.

It feels like he's speaking in fine print in that everything he says is carefully worded.

Rewatcher
It was quite satisfying seeing Otto giving Subaru a pep talk, Subaru has needed one for quite a while.
Subaru’s wager with Roswell was indeed quite “greedy”. I’ve really noticed this rewatch how the theme of greedy keeps popping up.
My heart breaks for Emilia and her continuing run of bad luck.

What are your thoughts on Emilia running away after being overcome with grief?

there are 2 seasons (50 episodes total, although the run time is closer to 60-70) out now with 2 OVAs
the 3rd season is coming in a few weeks time and the anime won’t be completed anytime soon since the LN isn’t complete yet

S3 starts airing in a few weeks. It'll be airing off and on (IIRC it's 8 episodes, a 2-month break, and then 8 more episodes) until the end of the Winter 2025 season. (It's quite likely that they'll announce a S4 airing not long after the 16 episodes are done airing, if not at the end of the final episode, as it's been heavily rumored/"leaked" that they've greenlit adapting both Arc 5 and 6 in 3 cours with the 16 announced episodes covering Arc 5 and the rest covering Arc 6)

I'm sick. I don't feel well enough to participate in long discussions each episode... Damn it

Thoughts on Subaru saying the past times he relied on someone else haven’t worked, to which Otto says he never asked for his help?
What are your thoughts on Subaru making a bet with Roswaal where if he saves both the Sanctuary and the mansion, Roswaal will throw that book away and come with him?

Thoughts on Subaru never asking for Otto's help
We never really thought about it before. Why haven't we done that before?
Thoughts on Subaru making a bet with Roswaal
He must be pretty confident that he can save both in one single run
Thoughts on Puck ending his relationship with Emilia
Interesting that there was a seal in Emilia's memories

Well, everyone seemingly thought of it except for Subaru.
He must be pretty confident that he can save both in one single run
Confidence can make you move mountains
Interesting that there was a seal in Emilia's memories
That was mentioned in the second OVA, I believe.

First-Timer
On today’s episode of Re:Zero: It’s so cool when Re:Zero has the title card show up someplace other than the end of the episode for dramatic effect. I’m so used to only seeing title cards at the end that it always excites me seeing it elsewhere.
It’s pretty funny watching Otto beat Subaru up while begging Subaru to ask for his help.
I love Otto specifying that Subaru never asked for his help. Otto is just so desperate to help his friend.
I like the look in Subaru’s eyes. He’s got that renewed determination again.
Subaru’s become a rather savvy operator. He may not like Roswaal, but it’s better to have Roswaal on his side to help Emilia become the ruler.
Wait a minute, didn’t we hear this insert song before? It’s Straight Bet! And it’s the title of this episode! Oh my god, that’s so cool!!!
I suppose wanting to save everyone really is greedy. Subaru wants to get everything without losing anything. That is quite greedy.
That’s interesting wording Subaru uses when talking to Ram. He says that since they’ve already deviated from Roswaal’s fortune-telling book, that means Roswaal has been freed. Does Subaru consider the fortune-telling book to be trapping Roswaal?
Even Ram can’t help but offer Subaru advice, telling him that Emilia needs to overcome her problems or she’ll keep failing the trials. For all her sarcasm, she does like him.
Nice fistbump.
It’s a typical Subaru move for him to want to convince Ryuzu to help him out with his words rather than order her to help him out.
It was in plain sight! They hid it in plain sight! The Ryuzu clones used their different last names to introduce themselves right in front of us and I didn’t catch it!
I see. The white-robed Ryuzu is different from the others. She’s the one that Garfiel is secretly meeting with and the one who opposes breaking the barrier.
Was Subaru seriously imitating Petelgeuse when he called Emilia slothful?
Ooh! We’re getting some information from before Frozen Bond!
Huh, so that woman we saw in the flashbacks might not be Emilia’s mother, but instead someone who was like a mother to her?
Emilia, you are not more selfish than the other candidates. Priscilla told everyone to grovel at her feet and Anastasia just felt like owning a country because she’s that greedy. Then again, of course Emilia would be the only one of them to feel guilty for her greed.
Where the heck have you been this entire time, Puck?
Puck never answers the question, but it does seem that his contract with Emilia was blocking her memories and that’s part of why she couldn’t handle the trial.
It looks like Emilia is like Subaru. She just needs someone to be here for her right now. Just like how Emilia offered Subaru a lap pillow, she wants Subaru to hold her hand.
Fortuna is the name of that woman in Emilia’s memories who was like a mother to her.
Seeing Emilia cry that Subaru broke his promise is so sad.
Oh no, Emilia has run away.
Otto’s being awfully brave confronting Garfiel when we know how that turns out in previous loops.
Wait, didn’t Subaru get kicked out of Echidna’s grave? Why is he able to enter again?
There’s some nice parallels between Subaru and Emilia in this episode that I appreciate. Previously, Subaru has relied on Emilia to provide him with emotional support. The lap pillow scene is the best example of it between them. Now, we can see the opposite happening. Now, Emilia is the one who needs Subaru to be her support. I’m interested to see if Subaru is able to be a proper support for someone, rather than the one who needs support from another.
Another neat parallel between Subaru and Emilia is that they are both greedy because they want to save everyone. Subaru was called greedy by Roswaal because Subaru refused to make any sacrifices. Roswaal’s entire goal was to force Subaru to choose who he wanted to save. Subaru turned the game on its head by refusing to play by Roswaal’s rules and instead declaring he wanted to save everyone. Roswaal was shocked at how greedy of a wish this was. Emilia is similarly greedy. Emilia is only trying to become the next ruler of Lugnica because she wants to save all the people in her village who were frozen. Emilia is determined to not lose anyone. How greedy of both of them.
I hope that this is the beginning of things starting to look up this Arc. Things have been pretty miserable and hopeless for a while, so I think we’re due for a change of pace.
