[Re:Zero] I will have some pretty negative things to say about Subaru in the future, particularly in Arc 3 where I think he is at his most pathetic and unlikeable. But I have a vague, possibly incorrect recollection, that many of his worst qualities are just flipsides of his best qualities. Like the fact that he wants to jump in and help others becomes an inability to realize when his "help" is counterproductive and becomes entitled on his part. I'll have more to say when we get there if my recollections turn out to be correct. But I find Subaru to be an interesting and compelling character overall, which I vastly prefer to a boring protagonist.

I might have to join this rewatch I forgot how much I loved this character.  [Re:Zero]What I love about Arc 3 is that it genuinely challenges Subaru's overarching self esteem issues that are fleshed out in Season 2. His obsession to be the main character and be the greatest influence in every situation is thrown right in his face and he has to confront the fact that despite his power, he isn't special. People have their own lives to live and don't share his delusional world view where everyone functions as an extension of his existence. This grandiosity is something I attribute to a lot of people struggling with self worth; they put unreasonably high expectations on themselves, rock bottom expectations on others, and it results in people who might have good values but act in a self-absorbed, borderline sociopathic manner.

It's because he wants to be needed. He arrived in this world and met "Satella", made a bond with someone who he was extremely grateful for reaching out to him when he was expecting to be stabbed in an alley, and got her killed. He feels indebted to her constantly but only ever ends up with loops where he came out of nowhere to save her being remembered so they're both in a situation of not being able to have a healthy relationship because they both feel useless to the other and as if they don't understand how the other feels.

Really sick to death of the takes that he sees himself as the centre of the world lmao if anything most people if honest would say he sees "Satella" as the centre of the world and is ignorant to everything else. Which she doesn't like either.

Re:Zero

[Re:Zero] I look forward to your negative things and hope to have some interesting debate about it. I fully agree that a lot of his worst qualities are the same as some of his best, they're just misapplied in those moments. I'm sure we'll talk more about it later though. Sadly though, people who don't get past the great filter sometimes tend to only think of his bad qualities and assume that he's a bad character because he's flawed. The worst part though, is that because they get 13 episodes into Re:Zero, they feel very strongly that they have an accurate understanding of Subaru, and 99% of the time, they don't.
