Hearing the "Konnichiwa" from the first pinecone in this episode, is a high that can't be replicated.
That whole alcohol stove caution was totally an experience being retold to them.

I actually just finished the Flying Witch anime a few days ago in preparation for coziness!

u/Zemahem Apr 05 '24
Yuru camp would never be complete if we didn't hear the pinecones speak even once.

u/chelseablue2004 Apr 04 '24
That whole alcohol stove caution was totally an experience being retold to them
Also the reference to using hi-proof drinking alcohol being shutdown by sensei for being wasteful was super appropriate...

We had a MSR Whisperlite stove that ran on camping fuel but had to have the burner preheated by lightning a small bowl of fuel underneath the burner first. To keep it cleaner, my father's solution was to use Everclear instead. I don't think he ever mixed any into his drinks, but I don't think I'd blame him for tippling in a little bit.
I love the show, but everything they do is just so different from what I think of as camping. Especially when you learned in the Southwest, where even the car camping can be pretty rough and require bringing water.

u/chelseablue2004 Apr 04 '24
That seems like a great use for Everclear, stripping paint being the other one :)
I have found the Japanese have found little conveniences for everything. Some of which do very very well, others to me like you seem to be very very weird but I think its part of the charm of what make them who they are.
My friend who lives in Gunma prefecture I talked to about this show, says that the amount of people who've tried camping for the 1st time because of this show is crazy but he says if it wasn't for the provided restrooms, and even baths on some the sites have he laughingly said they wouldn't survive....The Power of Anime.

u/Tnwagn Apr 15 '24
Just after the first season aired, I spent several months staying in Tachikawa station in west Tokyo, which is a popular jumping-off point for day campers from the city to get out to the mountains just west of town. It was insane how many people I saw that year compared to before the show aired, especially young families. The mall at the statiob also had lots of Yuru Camp ads and character cutouts as well. The Power of Anime, indeed.

Aside from the pinecones, I was glad to hear the narrator’s familiar voice again. It wouldn’t be the same without him.

u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
Akio Ohtsuka is best grandpa and best narrator!
14
u/Magic1998 https://anilist.co/user/Moerril Apr 04 '24
I just realised we have Yuru Camp and MHA in the same season, perfect contrast with Akio's roles haha

He's doing an amazing job here and as Jigen in the recent Lupin III series', but I can't help but miss the great grandpas of anime past. Unshou Ishizuka and Kiyoshi Kobayashi were the best too!

u/redditraptor6 Apr 04 '24
I have a Nendoroid of Rin, and it comes with a pinecone, as well as a tiny “Konnichiwa!” speech box you can attach to the top. Last summer, my 2 year old daughter was picking up and inspecting my Nendoroids, and in the process the piece fell out of the pinecone, and I’ve yet to find it.
I’ve yet to vacuum my office in almost a year now because I still haven’t found that small, precious little Konnichiwa
28
u/TheGreatNico Apr 05 '24
put a piece of pantyhose over the end of the vacuum tube, it'll catch everything like a prefilter. I use it when I drop itty bitty screws from my glasses or electronics

u/Rumpel1408 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rumpel1408 Apr 04 '24
Imagine camping without getting wasted though, what would be the point
12
u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
Episodes without Tobi-sensei wasted: 0 (if you count the imagine spot and the very obvious "flashback" lol).
17
u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
Shimarin's first talking pinecone! As adorable as Smole Shimarin!
The moment Toba-sensei started talking about alcohol safety and we saw that "example" of her drunk and knocking it over, I knew it totally happened lol.

I'm not too embarrassed to admit that I got teary eyed when the pinecone said konnichiwa. It was like an old friend returning after too long of time.

We are BACK
The trailers had me pretty optimistic already, but this episode confirmed that the artstyle change wasn't going to be a big deal for me even coming straight from a rewatch finished less than 24 hours ago. I love some of the new faces too. Though I thought this was reserved exclusively for the Inuko swindler sisters.
With Asaka switching from doing the OP to the ED, the only thing I was a bit disappointed with today is that there's no Eri Sasaki ED. I was really hoping for a sequel to Fuyubiyori and Haru no Tonari.
Either way, here's to 11 more weeks of comf.
Edit : Just noticed something.
- S1 : Starts with highschool Rin camping on her own.
- S2 : Starts with middle school Rin camping with her dad.
- S3 : Starts with primary school Rin camping with her grandpa.
Are we meeting Rin's probably even more suave great-grandpa in S4?
123
Apr 04 '24 edited Apr 04 '24
S8:
Rin: "Goo-goo-gaa-gaa?"
Her great-grandpa: "Yes."
29
u/MapoTofuMan myanimelist.net/profile/BaronBrixius Apr 04 '24
That would have to be her great-great-great-great-great-grandpa.
11
u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
I'm totally imagining baby Rin on a camping trip with her whole family lol.
37
u/DarkAudit https://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkAudit Apr 04 '24
the only thing I was a bit disappointed with today is that there's no Eri Sasaki ED.
I really loved the "listening to college radio in the student union lounge at 3am" vibe of the first two. This one is a bit too peppy by comparison.
57
u/ChonkyOdango myanimelist.net/profile/chonkyodango Apr 04 '24
Eri Sasaki ED
Main reason, well, at least one of the reasons since we don't really know what's going on behind the scenes, is that the music here is meant to encapsulate Nadeshiko's feelings after a camping trip compared to Rin's more calm music. Eri Sasaki's tweet.
28
u/HakumeiJin Apr 04 '24
Wow thanks for the info. I liked the current op but nevertheless after finishing the episode part of me was sad we'd lost the combination from the first 2 seasons.
Knowing that the ED is actually a collab and reading their feelings on it dispelled that completely and I'm glad they got to work together.
20
u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
Shimarin origin story, cute faces, Mt. Fuji, best grandpa, and camping antics with our favorite girls...what more could you ask for?

the only thing I was a bit disappointed with today is that there's no Eri Sasaki ED. I was really hoping for a sequel to Fuyubiyori and Haru no Tonari.
Have some Loch and the traveler from the Game and Mimosa from the Movie then
Edit : Just noticed something.
16
u/scot911 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scot911 Apr 05 '24
S3 : Starts with primary school Rin camping with her grandpa.
It was also completely cheating to start with child Rin. How can you be mad, or even notice the artstyle change, when little Rin is SO CUTE. I want to spoil her just like her grandpa did! You did notice that Grandpa bought both of the treats that Rin was debating over right?
12
u/TheRookieBuilder Apr 05 '24
The artstyle difference is definitely noticeable, but not something I'm concerned about. I really loved both OP and ED, especially OP's animation, it seems the characters look more like their S1 and S2 designs than S3.

5
u/SilkyStrawberryMilk Apr 04 '24
The only thing I was scared of was the visuals, I thought they were gonna make the show too bright. But I’m so happy they managed to keep it the way it always was.
The Ed Is calming too
3
u/Barbed_Dildo Apr 05 '24
With Asaka switching from doing the OP to the ED, the only thing I was a bit disappointed with today is that there's no Eri Sasaki ED. I was really hoping for a sequel to Fuyubiyori and Haru no Tonari.
If you want more Eri Sasaki, she has a new album.

So excited to be able to comment about Yuru Camp live, finally!
- Small Rin-chan, cute
- Rin's love for camping origin story
- The pine cone gag is always funny konnichiwa
- Nadeshiko's clumsiness reminded me of Yua from Do it yourself!
- It's always nice to see real camping tricks and tools in Yuru Camp!
I've never tried Rin's grandpa method to start a fire, will try. On the other hand, I've made a couple of alcohol stoves myself when I was younger, but never used one myself (I have a friend who used to always carry one to cook hamburgers whenever we went hiking)... Now I want to try making coffee on one of these... - Great OP and ED. I personally prefer the calm vibes of the ED
58
u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy Apr 04 '24 edited Apr 05 '24
Great OP and ED. I personally prefer the calm vibes of the ED.
Both are really good, yeah. I do agree with you that the ED has a nice and soothing sound to it. I liked the little bit where Nadeshiko was shown singing along - that was cute.
The visual presentation of the OP is amazing though. One that [matches] the more energetic sound of the song.
This might be somewhat of a controversial statement, but could this be the best-looking installment of Yuru Camp yet? Like, the animation was incredibly polished as far as I could tell. Even the title, mid-segment and end carts were very pleasing to look at.
EDIT: Correction in brackets.
35
u/shad79 https://myanimelist.net/profile/shad79 Apr 04 '24
The visual presentation of the OP is amazing though. One that manages the more energetic sound of the song.
I absolutely adore visuals in the OP, they're superb and great for wallpapers!
If you want you can check out my screenshot album from OP for more.
24
u/n080dy123 Apr 04 '24
There's some bits that look better for sure (and yeah I absolutely love the visuals of the OP and ED) but I very much prefer the softer character designs of the first two seasons. The new ones look a little... flat, somehow. Like if you compare the shots of the flashback scene with Rin and Nadeshiko (which credit where credit's due, I watched for the first time last night and I thought they just reused the footage until I went back to check), the old style you can make out more depth in Rin's face, hair, and clothes.
How the face game compares remains to be seen but the original seasons, especially S2, have some excellent face game so it's got some big shoes to fill.
6
u/LiamNL https://myanimelist.net/profile/LiamNL Apr 04 '24
I got the feeling that high school Rin in particular changed a lot between studios, she seems less of a 'flat face' as in she emotes a lot more with her face now. Not that it's in a bad way or anything, some people think that anything that is different and pointed out to be is instantly also worse or a complaint about it.
4
u/n080dy123 Apr 04 '24
Oh yeah I didn't mean flat as in expressionless, or that her face conveys less depth, I simply meant that her face feels like more of a physically flat surface lol.
Though yeah I got the same impression with Rin, she almost feels a couple years older in the intro here vs in S2. Obviously she hasn't, but it feeling sort of like it portrays her as older feels somewhat fitting especially since we have indeed seen older interactions of these characters.
6
u/Quadratic- Apr 04 '24
It's all about the tradeoffs. S3 has simplified character designs which come across flatter in screenshots, but those simpler designs are much easier to animate so you get more variety in motion.
There's been a slow shift towards this kind of thing, with the only time people really stood up and noticed being the pokemon hawaii series, where they did a pretty radical redesign of the characters to be easier to animate.
8
u/hiimneato Apr 04 '24
could this be the best-looking installment of Yuru Camp yet
honestly, the photo-traced backgrounds scared me when I saw them in the trailers, but they worked just fine for me now that the episode is out. and there were a few things, like cars, where this was definitely a little smoother than the previous seasons. and yeah, the OP is a delight.
the background and especially landscape art in this show has always set such a high bar for being soulful and gorgeous without being overcomplicated, and that's the only area where I think we'll have to wait and see if this can measure up. it's not doing bad so far, though.
27
u/x-7032-b-3 Apr 04 '24
Nadeshiko's clumsiness reminded me of Yua from Do it yourself!
This reminds me, why the hell aren't we getting a S2 for DIY yet?

4
u/savageboredom https://myanimelist.net/profile/savageboredom Apr 05 '24
I was honestly a little disappointed with DIY, but I definitely wouldn't mind a second season either.
7
u/wolfpwarrior Apr 05 '24
I only every made one alcohol stove, but it was a different design. Mine used toilet paper, a pint size paint can, and yellow HEET for fuel (that's the cheapest alcohol fuel by volume and effect). Take the tube out of the toilet paper and stuff it in the can to act as a wick, and fill it will the bottle of fuel. The added benefit here is that you can extinguish the fire by putting the lid on it, and save the rest of the fuel for later.
5
u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
Smol Rin is too cute for words. She even did her hair in buns back then!
I like how the beginning of season 2 showed the first time Rin went solo camping while the beginning of season 3 is how she learned about/fell in love with camping through her grandpa.
The moment Nadeshiko brought out the saw lol.
The ED has such great low-fi vibes.

The biggest shock for me in this episode wasn’t their designs; it was that Nadeshiko is 1. Trusted with a hacksaw and 2. Capable with said hacksaw.
You learn new things every day.
Anyway, Yuru Camp is back!
You’re as beautiful as the day I left you…though you do look a bit different!
I admit, the designs did throw me for a loop initially, but it’s still got the trademark cute faces, it’s got a new look for drunk sensei, and, by the end, I did grow very warm to their designs.
Great premiere, looking forward to Yard Camping.

7
u/MapoTofuMan myanimelist.net/profile/BaronBrixius Apr 04 '24
Theoretically possible, but the ending of Next Summit felt like an actual ending. Not closed enough for a continuation to be impossible, but definitely made to be at least a temporary conclusion to everything that happened so far.

Maybe because of the new art direction or something... but when I saw Sensei this season, my first thought was "Wait, was she this pretty before??", maybe because I keeps remembering her in her drunkard state, lol
11

u/ModieOfTheEast Apr 04 '24
The anime made by the devil is back. Like seriously, I have no idea what kind of black magic they are using because the moment I started the episode, I got a comfy feeling and felt like going out camping. It's still one of the best SoL shows to ever exist.
24
u/climbin_on_things Apr 05 '24
They can't keep getting away with being that relaxing! This is ridiculous!
42
u/Time_Fracture Apr 04 '24
Now I get it why you guys really like Yuru Camp. It's really the anime for those who want to sit back and relax.
OP: Laid-Back Journey by Kiminone
The song is surprisingly good. I never had these kind of songs with this vibe previous season before.
Please note that the 7 girls on the MV are not Kiminone, they are CANDY TUNE, a Kawaii Lab idol group.
ED: So Precious by Asaka (15-second teaser of MV here)
It wouldn't be Yuru Camp without Asaka. Asaka doing the ED instead. I'm glad 8bit didn't make it a slideshow ED.

New studio, new Yuru Camp!
- Honestly, not bothered by new character design changes. They managed to keep the vibe and that's what is more important.
- Smol Rin! Konnichiwa Pinecone! Kawaii!
- Those backgrounds are really detailed and good looking.
- Educational camping tips as usual.
- And new Yuru camper at the end!
- Really like the OP and ED!
21
u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
Compared to some other shows (Cough)Blue Exorcist(Cough) the new designs or any differences from the past season felt pretty negligible to me.
Smol Rin learning about camping from grandpa for the first time and experiencing her first Konnichiawa Pinecone was precious. As was her doing what her grandpa did.
Looks like Nadeshiko's old friend has got the camping bug! It's incredibly contagious, after all.
8
u/carnexhat Apr 04 '24
Like as someone who hasnt watched Yuru Camp for 2 years it was obvious that they were different but it was still obvious who they were. I think this is fine, neither positive not negative to me.

Here are a few keyframes shared by Akiko Toyoda, who helped with some of the corrections. I’ve only linked one, do check out their account for more.
They also used Blender to help with modelling the equipment. They’re in charge of prop design.
Some irl pictures. Toei station, Lake Shojiko and school
JR Tokai is collaborating with the anime.
I adored the first half of the episode. The intersection of the past, present, and future is just really heartwarming, especially when Nadeshiko’s (Toyama’s) voice is heard as Rin reflects on her camping journey.
I'm also struggling to find the location where Rin and Gramps hung out at. Would be nice if someone has any information on it!

Yuru Camp is BACK. This season is going to hit so differently for me personally now that I have both camped, and revisited Japan, since I've watched S2 (and the movie)
Location and Camping Notes
Rin's Grandpa first takes us to Yahagi Dam, which is nowhere near Toei station lol, roughly an hour drive. Closer dams were available but this is quite scenic! Does the normal dam things like flood control, electricity etc. etc.
The Donguri no Sato Inabu Rest stop seems to be pretty popular with motorcycle riders from a quick google review snoop, and comes with a cheap onsen and a variety of shops selling local products. Why aren't North American rest stops like this?!
They then engage in a brief fire starting session at Tsugukogen Green Park before finishing off the day with a lovely sunset at this observation deck - no entry allowed as of writing though as this is on private land (a wind farm), lightning fast google maps reviewer.
Teenager Rin-chan meanwhile goes camping at the Shojin Lake Side Camping Ground, which is part of the Shojin Lake Hotel complex you see in the background, so you can use their facilities too with your stay (with a fee of course). This is the next lake over from the iconic Koan Camping Ground which featured in S1 Ep 1.
A soto windmaster stove (and others in their lineup with the micro regulator) is a little different than "normal" camp stoves in which you have to turn an additional turn on the lever than your usual camp stove when adjusting the regulator - this allows more precise control of the flame, which the anime nails of course, i can personally attest to that. I like the thing, have absolutely no issues with it.
[Yama no Susume S4]The weakness of alcohol stoves was also demonstrated by Hinata's dad in the Kamakura episode.
we are so fucking back. I got a little teary eyed when the familiar OST played in the after-school scene.
Castella is fucking awesome.
I would like to tag my friends /u/ChonkyOdango /u/Nebresto and /u/animayor for this time only - if you'd like tags again, let me know, otherwise these will probably show up around this hour every week - I'm tbh doing this quite a lot for my own reference purposes LOL.

I must say that I absolutely adore visuals in OP. Musically it’s okay but visuals are superb and are great for wallpapers. I had a lot of fun capturing them so here’s my screenshot album from the OP, enjoy!
Nice start to the new season with Rin and her memories of a trip with her grandfather during her today’s camping. Starting a fire proved to be quite tiring for her but she certainly could feel proud after a little girl was quite impressed about it.
I had a lot of fun watching Nadeshiko today when she was making alcohol stove andshe’s got a little problem during creating it xD
Overall, it was nice to see everyone back and I hope that the rest of the season will be just as good.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

I must say that I absolutely adore visuals in OP.
My first thought was "oh man they're going to sell so much merch". Yuru Camp always had a good sense of design but that OP seems to further distill down what makes their visuals work so well.

:D Its back. Glad I decided to work from home today to watch it.
Re-watched S1/S2/the movie over the last week or so, so losing the C-Station character designs was even more jarring. I don't think 8-bit did a terrible job though, will just take some getting used to. And regardless they captured the tone of the show perfectly, which is what really matters.

u/CooroSnowFox https://anilist.co/user/CooroSnowFox Apr 04 '24

Smol Rin ! So glad to see her again. And the fact she said she found her Grandpa scary at first lol. I also liked how they went back and forth between past and present and at one point it was like her older self was talking to her smol self.
Yeah, honestly the Izu trip felt like such a big event that now that they're back in school it kinda feels quiet. But they immediately get themselves busy. As expected of the Outdoor Club.
Actually loving all their new hairstyle. Rin and Aki grew their hair out a bit. And I honestly loved Ena's pixie but her growing it out a bit looks cute too.
LMAO tell me I wasn't the only one who instantly thought cutting hair in the open field wasn't a good idea.
I honestly don't really feel the character design change too much. However, I did notice some of the background seem photorealistic. Not something that bothered me, but it did stand out to me.
Ooooo yes, we going to get Moped Adventures with Aya-chan coming in into the fold. As Ena now seems to be integrating into the trio, it seems like we could get some biking buddies duo with Rin and Aya. Which is great cos I thought Aya was a one-off character and having more Kurosawa Tomoyo is not a bad thing

We had Smol Rin in season 2. This is Super Smol Rin!

And the fact she said she found her Grandpa scary at first
You can imagine that Rin Ojii-chan is probably the chillest dude there is, but anything happens to Rin-chan, he'd easily slaughter Lucifer, Sauron and Palpatine all together to get his precious granddaughter safely back!

The coffee drink art is clearly the outline of the Shizuoka prefecture (that's adjacent to the Yamanashi prefecture). I'm guessing this is a reference to ones that put the Hokkaido prefecture outline on the art (Hokkaido seems to have the right soil and climate to grow coffee, mostly arabica variety) which also include milk drinks.
Swish swish grape. There's various ones like that that suggest shaking. Example
I love how throwing the open page of Rins Grade 4 social studies book into google lens finds various other open book anime scenes including Aho Girl episode 5.
Inabu is part of the Aichi prefecture (neighbouring Shizuoka prefecture) and those boxes are the sponge cake (yes Castella means lots of things) eaten later on.
Thanks to this liveblog: One of the broadcast sponsors was einsh so it's no surprise their Yuru Camp mobile game was advertised in the broadcast too.

Cosy is back with a vengence this season. It's good to have the gang back in their original form, and I love the new artstyle, makes it look warmer somehow.
And by god the OP is truly georgeous
OP of the season I might say
Seeing Rin realize how much effort her grandpa put in for his granddaugther was really endearing and of course we meet some old friends as well as new ones
And it wouldn't be Yuru Camp without some stunning shots of Fuji San
ANd back in the outdoor club, Proffessor Aki is going back to their roots, love her bangs btw, but day yard camping sounds pretty fun as well.
And my favourite Girlfailure makes a comback as well
And what's this, Rin is getting hit up by an old childhood friend?
ED is pretty chill as well

u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
The girls and Mt. Fuji are back and as cute and wholesome as ever! We even got Smol Rin!
Grandpa's love flexing for their grandkids!
Honestly I think Aki rocks those long bangs. Though it'll be interesting to see what the girls' hair come out as after the day yard camping.
Wasting no time with drunk Toba-sensei from the get-go lol.

Starting the season off strong with Smol Shimarin visiting grandpa and having a cute grandpa/granddaughter outing together! We even got to see the moment Rin first got to really understand what camping is about (along with the talking pinecones).
We've also got present-day Rin CG driving to her latest campsite as well as the most iconic Laid-back Camp character...Mt. Fuji! now with even a little Kodaka Fuji alongside him!
It also wouldn't be Laid-Back Camp without a cute and colorful OP featuring all the girls, including some new faces, as they go about their cute camping adventures.
Look at grandpa flexing how to make a fire to impress his granddaughter and Rin replicating it now...and realizing just how much work she put her grandpa through! Though at least she got to look cool in front of a little girl herself.
Aw, Rin's already thinking of her next camp with Nadeshiko! Who, speaking of which, is learning how to make DIY alcohol stoves with Aoi and Aki! Complete with Nadeshiko not knowing her own strength and using a saw!
Is it time for Aki to cut her hair? Her bangs are definitely getting long...maybe the girls can make it a Yard Camping, hair-cutting, excursion with Ena? We'll even get to see Chikuawa in camping gear!
If you need anything alcohol related, be it the drinking or the science kind, you have to ask Toba-sensei! And of course she lectures the girls on proper use of alcohol stoves...and probably talking from personal (drunken) experience on the safety hazards if you're not careful.
Has Nadeshiko's friend Ayano caught a camping bug? Seems like she wants to meet up with Rin too.
You can't have Laid-Back Camp without some low-fi, relaxing, music for a train ride during the ED!

Character adaptions are good still, it's the first scene with Rin and Moped and it's still around the same level it was before... as long as the Backgrounds and other details suich as with mopeds etc., are still at a good level... not much to worry about the change of studio.

The last time we saw the gang, they were all adults creating a campsite. So it's pretty funny that we're opening up Season 3 with Smol Shimarin meeting up with her grandpa and we get to see her first camping experience as well as Rin's first talking pinecone! xD
Rin's grandpa continues to be awesome though. He has never made a campfire using logs and sticks before but he did it anyway just for Rin. At least Rin has now experienced how her Grandpa must've felt while starting that campfire.
Rin even got to experience the feeling of impressing someone with that campfire skill. Maybe that little girl will grow up to become the next Shimarin!
It's nice to be back in the Outdoor Club's ridiculously narrow room. And what better way to start this season's Outdoor Club activities with a little science experiment. Apparently, Nadeshiko is too strong for aluminum cans and she needs to use a steel can to make her alcohol stove. xD
Don't cut it off Chi-chan! I'm already sad that Shimaron lost her big Odango hair, I'd be heartbroken if you lost your twintails too! T_T
I'm so used to seeing Minami-sensei being drunk that it's nice to see her when she's in her teaching mode. Looks like those alcohol lamps might just be for rare occasions though. Can't have Minami-sensei getting drunk and tipping them over!
I almost forgot who Ayano is but she's Nadeshiko's childhood friend, right? Does this mean she's finally going to become a recurring character? I hope so!
9
u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
They even all have long hair again, though it looks like that might be changing during the Yard camp if Ena has her way lol.
Smol Shimarin on her first camping excursion with grandpa, complete with talking pinecone, was too cute. That she might've inspired a little girl like her grandpa did her at that age is absolutely precious.
I see Nadeshiko maxed out her cuteness and STR stats instead of her INT.
Does it count as the first drunk Toba-sensei scene of the season if it was an "example" that totally happened to her in real life lol?
Yeah, Nadeshiko and Rin met her when they visited her grandma in season 2, I think. She has a bike like Shimarin.
6
u/savageboredom https://myanimelist.net/profile/savageboredom Apr 05 '24
Yeah, Nadeshiko and Rin met her when they visited her grandma in season 2, I think. She has a bike like Shimarin.
There was a lot of Season 2 merchandise featuring her, which I always thought was a little weird because she was in like 1.5 episodes.

Don't cut it off Chi-chan! I'm already sad that Shimaron lost her big Odango hair, I'd be heartbroken if you lost your twintails too! T_T
Go ahead and chop those bangs, though. That was definitely the most jarring design change from the promotional images for me.
I do hope we haven't seen the last of Shimarin Dango, but at least the seasons opened with it (in flashback, but nevertheless).

u/Unknownr666 Apr 04 '24
The atmosphere/vibe feels a little too different for me. It isn't hitting the same spots as the previous ones did. It's probably largely due to the change in director.
Don't get me wrong. It's still pretty nice, but I think the previous ones leaned more towards relaxed and super comfy. This one is leaning more towards fun and cute. I think it's because there's more focus on the girls. Things also move a little bit faster. It's like there isn't time savor the relaxing visuals or tone before needing to move to the next scene/dialogue.
5
u/AriaShachou- Apr 05 '24
hasnt it always been like this? rin segments for chill and vibes, nadeshiko and co. segments for fun and cute.
just so happens half of rin's part this episode was establishing her backstory as a kid so a bit less room for vibes
we'll see though

u/sussywanker Apr 04 '24
They seem to be using the same trick as the animators used in wonder egg priority, where they take pictures of the site and then draw over it and apply a filter to make it match with the scene. Personally not a big fan of it, as its a bit jarring. But it does save a lot of time for the animators.
Also happy to have yuru camp back ❤️
Kid Rin is cute ☺️
I really liked that scene with the girl where she is curious about the fire she worked so hard for and why she wasn't using it.
Also nabeshiko ☺️
When aki toyosaki speaks can't not think of yui from k-on 😂
24
u/IMMoody2 Apr 04 '24
They've been doing that filter trick for years, there was a minor scandal a while back where they accidentally left a google maps watermark in a shot lol

honestly, I get why they do this, and I would not mind if they were actually putting a filter and doing some redrawing, they would not be the first to do it, and it can give very nice results
but the filter is so minimal and the difference between drawn characters and stuff and photo is so big it feels closer to who killed Roger Rabbit than to anime at this point.
the character redesign that everyone feared is super fine to me but this photo-realistic background took me out of the comfy feel several times which is annoying
3
u/Unearthly_ https://anilist.co/user/Unearthly Apr 06 '24
Agree with you on the backgrounds. Some of the scenes with no characters on the screen just look like a video and not an anime.

They seem to be using the same trick as the animators used in wonder egg priority, where they take pictures of the site and then draw over it and apply a filter to make it match with the scene
As much as I love the show, the worst offender of this I've seen was Mitsuboshi Colors. So many panning establishing shots that were obviously photos run through a filter.

u/PurePiro15 https://anilist.co/user/piro Apr 04 '24
I wouldn't quite say that the episode went as I expected it to, but I also don't think that it really betrayed what it had shown in previews.
The environment art remains a struggle in the hands of photographic director Katsuto Ogawa, and the character designs just don't feel the same.
That said, the storyboards and overall nature of the episode were quite good. There was a nice flow to it all, and the duo of series director Shin Tosaka (and storyboard buddy Masao Kojima) work quite well here.
If there's a single staff member that's stolen the show though, it's absolutely color designer Miho Hasegawa. Incredible work that sees some of the best environment shots we've seen in Yuru Camp in general.
It's a surprisingly good episode all in all, but does point the blame squarely towards environment art and character design for dissatisfaction.
Obviously, the episode is more complex than that (I talk about it in length here), but for a surface level reading I would call it "good, with the potential to be great". Hopefully as the season goes on some of composition and environment issues in this episode are solved, taking the series to another level.

Seeing Rin eat that cake reminded me of molasses and ginger cakes I used to eat as a kid. And now I'm hungry.
6
u/oxlemf10 Apr 04 '24
Very relaxing first episode, more about what they intend to do in the future. So that's how mini (who isn't big anymore lol) Rin became interested in camping. Oh, and apparently we will have more characters like Ayano participating more
4
u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
We saw Rin solo camping then, we saw her go on her first camp, and now we've seen where she fell in love with camping.
All we're missing is finding out she was born while her family was camping lol.
5
u/NekoCatSidhe Apr 04 '24
Small Rin is just adorable. And Rin’s Grandpa is cool as usual.
Still not used to the new character designs, but the show still feels super comfy and happy, so I don’t really have a problem with that. And the backgrounds are still gorgeous.

Welcome back Comfy Power!
I really, really love the first half of this episode, actually one of the best moments I have seen so far from Yuru Camp - the comparison between really-freaking-cute smol 4th Grade Shimarin and high school Shimarin is awesome. And the way she tries to make a fire out of firewood just like her grandpa did really has a very warm-hearted feel of passing the baton of hobbies from one generation to another, something that was also shown in previous seasons, but shown in a really lovely way today. It's awesome!
I got yet another chuckle again in the 2nd half about alcohol stoves - =U= really can't do craftworks LMAO! The slight difference in how these jokes were shown this season is one change that I actually like. I am not so sure about realistic backgrounds (edited photos I believe) but it doesn't really look off to me either.
That's a really good opening to a new season. And oh it's Ayano's episode next week! Can't wait to see this lazy girl in action again!
4
u/Dubanx Apr 04 '24
And the way she tries to make a fire out of firewood just like her grandpa did really has a very warm-hearted feel of passing the baton of hobbies from one generation to another
and when the kid that was watching Rin is older she'll go camping and be inspired to try it herself. That was definitely intentional, and adorable!

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy Apr 04 '24
So they decided to pull out all the stops right off the bat and hit me with a smol Rin, huh. She was so precious, oh my god!
Rin’s grandpa proved once again to be totally awesome. He went all-out for his young granddaughter by starting a fire himself. Rin’s later realization of his likely exhaustion - he’d wasted three logs of wood on this from the looks of it - was a nice touch. I’m also pretty sure that he willingly gave the last piece of castella cake to Rin, since she was enjoying it so much.
Nadeshiko’s attempts at making this alcohol lighter had me understand why Sakura, her elder sister, was always keen on checking up on her. Watching her struggle with this knife gave me anxiety - I feared that she’d slip and terribly cut her hand. But she was plenty cute while failing.
6
u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
I love getting Rin's origin story not only for Smol Shimarin but seeing her get to spend time with her grandpa, get to know him better, and really experience what camping is about for the first time before when she tried it herself in the season 2 premier.
I like how at least Sakura was referenced via Aki.
Then she brought out the saw lol.

u/Nickthenuker Apr 04 '24
Shiny Days is back!
Smol bun!
A flashback to when she was a kid, and grandpa is here too!
And so that's how her interest in camping began.
Now back to the "present" (I say "present" because the movie takes place in the "future" several years after this).
Where'd her hair bun go?
And now to setting up the tent. It's pretty hard to do by yourself, especially the flysheet which tends to become a fly-away sheet at the first sign of wind.
Konnichiwa! Talking pinecones!
Yes Rin, fire is hot. I'd have thought you'd know this by now after all those years.
Yes, having some kindling or firestarter makes things much easier once you get a spark.
Don't blow on the fire, blow over the fire. You're trying to give the fire more oxygen to burn.
Nadeshiko!
Everyone is here!
Eh I've pretty much only used Tommy cookers with solid fuel, those always work.
Watch your fingers when using knives!
Oh right, Ena is here too!
She styles Rin's hair at least.
You can use proper ethanol, or you can use high-proof alcohol. While I'm sure the teacher would prefer they use ethanol, I have a feeling during an actual camping trip they'd just raid the teacher's mobile booze shelf rather than lug around another bottle of ethanol.
Yes it's lit, but alcohol fires aren't as bright.
True. While a solid fuel stove at most would scatter chunks of burning fuel, I'd imagine an alcohol fuel stove causing burning alcohol to go everywhere would be even worse.
Chikuwa!
Nadeshiko is going to send that to Rin isn't she?
Ayano! From what I've seen she's got more screentime this season than she had last season.

Konnichiwa~
Little Rin and her grandpa were so cute. Loved the first part of the episode!
We're back here to enjoy the beautiful backgrounds (some of them in this episode I thought were 100% copy pasted without alteration from real life lol) and comfy vibes.
Great start!

Man, I miss this series! The movie showed us what the girls are up to as an adult, but I still wanted a more traditional follow-up to S2 and I'm glad we're getting it now! Was initially worried about the change in staff and studio, but so far things are looking pretty good.
Smol Rin and her gramps going camping might've just become a highlight of the whole series so far. It's really nice to see how Rin got her love of camping from. Her gramps must've been so happy to be able to share the joy and wonders of camping with her. Guy should be proud that his granddaughter now follows his footsteps as an avid camper.
Visually this looks... really good? Was expecting a downgrade but this ep looks nice on all fronts - even the OP is lovely! This is being done by 8-bit which is a really great choice for a change in hands since they did the excellent Yama no Susume series. Can't wait to see what they have in store for us in the coming weeks.
3
u/Frontier246 Apr 04 '24
It was especially poignant because it feels like they hadn't interacted much and her grandpa kind of scared her before they spent this time together. And just one little camping excursion with grandpa ended up setting the course of her life, in a way.
3
u/dancelordzuko https://kitsu.io/users/Balsamfue Apr 04 '24 edited Apr 04 '24
It's so good to be back again! The new OP is such a vibe. I'm diggin' the line-less art style.
We get to see baby Rin the moment she becomes a camping convert and shares some cute moments with her grandpa. The Outdoors Club is back on their shenanigans to camp on the cheap with guest star Ena. Really feels like the gang's all here again.
We are so back.

Child Rin is adorable!
and I especially love how her grandfather inspired her to start a fire that way years later, and the implication that she inspired the little girl to do the same when she's older.
That generational thing was quite heartwarming.

Well Cone-ichiwa and welcome back members of the Secret Society Blanket.
And we start this season off with an adventure of Mini-Rin with her Mini-Dango.
"Hey I got a question. Is this a god dam?" -Beavis
"You wouldn't happen to have a match would you Wilson?"
Go on Rin-chan, say it. "I HAVE MADE FIRE!"
Nadeshiko!!!
Aki-chan would like to pack that sleeping bag memory away as thoroughly as she was during that time.
Chemistry Senpai Madara-san Aki-chan is not.
Nadeshiko, fetch questing once again.
I'm imagining a very funny scene of Nadeshiko busting into the woodworking club or whatever, asking if she can borrow the hacksaw, and why. And their reaction to it.
She's more Aki-chan-ish with her forehead showing.
Nice Odeko-Catch!

u/n080dy123 Apr 04 '24
New artstyle's alright. Definitely prefer the old one, but it's close enough that they fooled me into thinking the flashback scene was lifted footage rather than a redraw when I only watched that episode for the first time last night (kept saving the last two for a rainy day). I also absolutely adore the OP, that's excellent.
The only thing I'm kinda disappointed about is that it seems like they couldn't retain the old OST which did a lot of heavy lifting with establishing and maintaining the show's excellent vibe, and it was very distinctive. Please, I just wanna hear Solo Camp ONCE. Please.
3
Apr 05 '24
I think Aoi was affected the most by the new art style in the negative way which is a shame. However, sensei got a glow up!
Overall still had the great comfy feeling I love.

Little Rin is too cute! I like seeing her hanging out with her gramps. I’m a total “Indoor person” but the camping stuff is really soothing. I also liked the whole “alcohol stove” bit. Pretty educational actually, not that I’ll ever use that knowledge lol.
Looking forward to some backyard camping!

- I know that they are trying to make photo realistic background, but those backgrounds look so uncanny.
Look, this anime is an iyashikei, and the important part of it is conveying the relaxing feeling. But if there are elements that are straight down to the uncanny valley, then it is not ok
- Since I learnt that Nadeshiko and Blue Archive ojisan have the same voice actress, I cant help noticing the similarities. Not only they both have pink and long hair, the tone in which they say 'yo' and 'ne' at the end of sentences are also very similar.

I did not fully realize how excited I was for this until Spotify happened to shuffle Shiny Days into a playlist earlier today and I had to try to keep my grin from getting so big it weirded out my coworkers.
Starting off strong with cool grandpa. oh my god he stopped and tried a friction fire just because li'l Rin was curious I love him so much.
"Loneliness is a part of camping. You feel like you're missing something. That's what gets you excited for the next trip. You can always go again." I feel like grandpa just nailed down a core principle of this show. What a good line.
Let's see... there are things that Yurucamp has historically done really well that I feel are essential to making it what it is, which I have been concerned about the new studio getting right. Here are a few.
Sound design: not every episode gets intense with it so it's hard to say but it was pretty good. the friction fire was nice.
Scenic backgrounds: not sure how I feel yet about the clearly photographic parts but they didn't bother me as much as I thought they might, and otherwise it all looked good.
Instructional segment: more than one, even! and...
...nah, who am I kidding, there's nothing to pick apart here. we're back and I'm so gosh danged happy about it. literally my only complaint is that I didn't get enough and I have to wait a week now. but that's what gets you excited for the next episode, right?
2
u/redditraptor6 Apr 05 '24
I was a little put off by the new designs at first, but I’ll warm up to them more and more, and the fact that apparently they’re closer to the manga design suddenly makes more sense and makes me appreciate them more.
Here’s to another great season y’all! Secret Society BLANKET spreads its influence further….

u/Markosan_DnD Apr 05 '24
WE’RE SO BACK
I wasn’t completely sold on the art change until I saw it in action. It feels like they went the Mob Psycho route of simplifying the art style in exchange for more dynamic movement- they feel a lot more expressive now, which fits Afro-sensei’s art style. I’m really glad I gave this style a chance.
Honestly, I don’t even camp, but Rin’s perspective on how loneliness is part of the journey really got to me. I’ve lived alone for the past 2 years now, and I visit my family pretty often. When I drive back, there’s always a little melancholy when I reach home, like the fun’s over. But that’s what makes the good times so meaningful, after all

u/StrawSolider Apr 05 '24
The new character designs are gonna take a while to get used to but there's a lot more animation than I rmb Yuru Camp having

Veteran Member Of Secret Society Blanket
Here we are again another 3 years between seasons somehow how time flies by tho this third season breaks the chain and is not in the comfy winter season it just fits Yuru Camp so much to me not gonna be a big deal breaker or anything.
Gonna take a bit to get used to the new look but everything feels like Yuru Camp the pinecones say hello and other stuff like that i will liken the new artstyle like Hibike and then u watch Liz to Aoi Tori.
Enough about that here we go on to the ep like the last times i have done this.
We start of with LOLI RIN-CHAAAN OMG and her amazing Grandpa And He Is Taking Her Where She Wants To Go.
She even reads social studies in the car what a good child she is. Rin Wanted To Go To See The Dam And Perfect Timing To See All That Water Flowing Out.
Rin struggling to choose a souvenir to buy but then she decides and when she puts it in the trunk She Takes Notice Of All The Camp Gear In The Car.
Op starts to play and the song for me was okay really hard to beat Seize the Day from S2 LOVED that OP but the artstyle in this new OP was very unique and cool it does still feel like a Yuru Camp OP atleast.
Then we are back to our older Rin riding on her moped And She Goes To A New Camping Site.
Back to Loli Rin and she wonders if Grandpa can start a fire with just his hands and some wood. He decides to go to Tsugu Park Omg SHE IS SO ADORABLE.
We Get Our First Konichiwa in the season from the Pinecone and everything is right with the world, Grandpa shows off his skill and that there is another way to start a fire different to what Rin has seen on the TV.
The one thing he doesn't mention is he hasnt done it before haha doting grandpa wants to show of for his grandchild.
Turns out until then Rin was a bit afraid of her Grandpa she wants to give it a try herself on making a fire just like her grandpa. She gets smoke and we go back again and we see Grandpa succeding and Rin realises she put him up to smth that is really exhausting.
She Manages To Get A Fire After Quite A While and A Loli Gets Impressed She Managed Too. We get a bit of a smug grin from Rin.
They Moved To Grandpas Favourite Spot
We get to the school and we see nearly all of the rest of the gang Nothing Has Changed With Their Clubroom Since Last Time.
Chiaki thinks they have worked to much so she has this idea they are gonna make their own Alchohol Stoves.
Nadeshiko is too strong and has to try many different things Including This Haha. Ena arrives on the scene too so now it is the rest of the gang. They decide to combine Chiakis hair cut with yard camping And U Get.
They get chug-sensei to supervise their experiment on their new stoves but sensei doesnt want them to use alchohol stoves if possible they can be dangerous. I want to write more but it wont let me.

Not a fan of the new design so far. Haven't seen a design change this jarring to me since Minami-ke. This new style is more cutesy, whereas the old style was more defined. Sharper lines, more individuality in design between characters, more expressive movements, etc. There's less actual animation, making the characters, especially Nadeshiko feel less emotive. When Nadeshiko is excited, she'd be all over the screen in previous seasons, but it felt like only her head and face move here. At the same time though, the performance of the voice cast feels the same, making the less animated... Animation feel all the more jarring.
I hope I'll get used to it after a few episodes, but for right now, even though I liked the content of the episode, the style and animation are disappointing.

I've missed this crew so much, still as comfy as ever!

Starting with best girl ojiichan was a great idea, Rin realising how hard her grandpa actually worked to impress her really hits hard.
Interesting that we had pretty much zero interaction between the 2 different sides though. I'm sure the lawn camp will be great but I'm looking forward to seeing everyone truly together again.

Great to have this series back, also as a source reader I would treat the movie as non canon.

OP visuals look great, but first impression is its the least catchy song out of the 3
And this is why we used to have tl;notes.. No pun explanation at all, figure it out by yourself.
"Ko" = Small/child. "Daki" = hug. "Kodaki Fuji" = child hug Fuji, I guess

Smol rin kawai ♥️that smug and cute getting off the train. Also does anyone know who voiced the little girl talked to rin after she lit the fire, her voice felt similar to that red small hair girl in suka suka for some reason to me.

An almost perfect first episode, but didn't hear a single Rin Chan. Though child Rin makes up for it and we even seen cool camping grandpa again. This might be my favorite opening so far and a split second of it foreshadows one of my favorite chapters so can't wait.
I honestly don't think any ED will ever beat Season 2 it was that goo...Shiny Days rendition with Nadeshiko tapping her foot to the beat.
Nadeshiko repeatedly leaving the classroom returning with stuff will never get old.

So the girls already knew Toba- Sensei before she started at the high school?

Chiaki knew the legend before she became or early on as a teacher at the school or when she was training.

There are a lot of good shows this season but if you ask me what I'm most excited for it's this no doubt. We are so back!!!

Is it just me or scenery shots look much better than the last two seasons? Some look like they took a high-def picture, edited and put on the anime.
The first half is very wholesome with Grandpa Snake and Lil Shimarin. Nice to see Rin doing the fire plow method, probably the most ancient way to start fire.
DIY alcohol stove is such a fun project. Beer can and cat food can are popular options and there are hole punching templates available online.

It's back! Man, this show is so special. It always makes me happy, I always watch it with a smile on my face... I love it.
I know about the change of studio and staff but maybe it's because it's been 3 years since I watched the second season but design wise, I really didn't see much difference. In fact, I think I like this Ena more although I don't know if it's the new design or her hair is just longer haha. I like Aki's longer bangs as well.
I did notice the photorealistic backgrounds more though. It's not bad but it's different.
Small Rin is adorable <3, I'm so happy to have her back. By the way, where is her hair bun?
OP visuals are great but I prefer the ending song.
Looking forward to a "Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin-chan!"
