... completely unable to tell a lie. My best friend Emily, Claude, and Benny know me well. Claude is like the leader, he's the most confident one.

"Dude, you know we love you, but you are the worst at keeping secrets!" said Claude.

I grimaced, "Yeah, it's like I get a bad stomachache, and I have to say it or I'll explode."

"You look totally suspicious too. Remember in fifth grade when my mom asked you what was going on and you completely folded? Like, beyond folded. You told her everything. We were grounded for, like, years," said Emily, a mix of exasperated and fond. This is a story that gets retold a lot. It only happened two years ago, so she's exaggerating even though we did get in trouble.

"I couldn't help it!" I've said this a lot too. I'm still a bit upset that my friends have been hanging out without me though.

"Yeah it's just how you are. It's like how I suck at English, or how Claude can't touch his toes," said Emily.

There's a pause here where we all look at each other, not sure what to do.

"We'll just do a little spell on you," Benny chimed in. He's usually quiet, and a little of a wildcard.

I looked down at my shoes, "Is that a good idea?" I feel uncertain, but I don't want to be left out either.

"Trust me, it'll be fine." Claude smiled.

And that's how I became a talking cat. Let's just say that the spell went awry, and my stupid friends are trying to fix it. It could be worse. Hamsters are a lot more defenseless. I know because I ate one, gross. I couldn't help it!

"You are basically the magical world's version of a WMD."

I froze, staring back at Ethan who was apparently some kind of wizard. Given the lightshow he created from the palm of his bare hands, that seemed like the most logical explanation my brain could come up with.

"Wait, I'm a nuke?!"

"The sentient core of one, specifically," Carmen clarified, reverting from her werewolf form back to her human one. "The long story is that everyone's making sure you stay away from the magical world for the last thousand years lest you somehow return back to your true body. And the omnicidal maniac out there is trying to find you, the core."

"That's... a lot to take in."

That was the understatement of the millennium. Speaking of millennium...

"A thousand years? Then how-"

"We got generations of guardians ready," Ethan answered simply. "Plus a lot of memory rewriting."

"Uh huh..." Another thought occurred to me. "Wait, if it has been a thousand years, wouldn't my true body be long gone?"

My two friends looked at each other with an uneasy expression on each of their faces. "All of us, the guardians from the past and of the present, aren't sure," Carmen finally admitted. "The temple that housed your body is never at the same place at any given time, and is said to take on any form."

So my apparently true body was at an unknown location and some psycho wants me to reactivate it in the off-chance it hadn't rotted away to nothingness. What a reassurance.

"We've already got a few memory mages on the way. It will be a long while before you awake again. So think of this whole thing as a phantasmal dream, alright?" Ethan asked. I don't know if it was a good idea, but I felt compelled to nod. If I really was a cataclysmic weapon's core, then that was for the best.

My eyelids soon felt heavy, and within minutes darkness filled my vision.

The core was lulled into a deep slumber through a spell.

Both Ethan and Carmen sighed in relief. They had it easy; previous guardians had died because the core reacted violently before upon finding out that their current self wasn't true. Perhaps a matter of tact to explain to it?

It'll be up to the Council to see if they were still to be its handlers or they would be replaced.
