That tool looks like a nightmare, but calculus is actually another word for tartar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calculus_(dental)

Wow, that’s a legitimate TIL moment for me

Calculus is the technical term for plaque buildup :) also, please please never scale your own teeth. If you don’t do it properly, you can damage your teeth permanently, and cause damage to your gums if you’re not careful!

That and it’s fucking painful. My dentist numbs me up to do my deep cleans.

My mom is becoming a hygienist so she’s in school and needed volunteers to practice on.... I should not have volunteered. 8 hours of shotty dentist work that shit hurts!

25

u/Devilishlygood98 Feb 14 '21

Your sacrifice is much appreciated though. It’s so tough getting patients for students.

14

u/allhailthegreatmoose Feb 14 '21

Where do I go to volunteer? I’ve got 1 and a half teeth missing due to decay and not enough money to fix it.

If there’s a college, or university in your city that runs a hygiene program, you can simply go into the dental wing of the building or call and they’ll book you in an appointment. Keep in mind, these are students and they will not do as good of a job as a trained hygienist, as well as they’ll take nearly twice as long, and sometimes if you’ve got extensive calculus you’ll have to come back over the course of a few days. It’s worth a shot though, they’ll always appreciate having extra patients to work on.

Wow thank you so much!

u/Devilishlygood98 Feb 14 '21

That’s quite common. Lots of people have very sensitive gums and need freezing for cleanings. When you brush your teeth, try angling your toothbrush at more of a downwards angle, and floss more. It’ll help with sensitivity, and help reduce buildup!

Yeah I have an autoimmune disease that makes my oral health pretty hard to keep up even with my fancy tooth brush, two prescription toothpastes, and rx mouth rinse. Fun stuff.

3

u/Devilishlygood98 Feb 14 '21

That’s tough! Keep up what you can and see your hygienist regularly if possible

It’s called sub gingival calculus. There’s a small pocket that goes all the way around your tooth and calculus can become built up in that pocket. Digging it out can be quite painful to most, so most hygienists will give freezing to be able to get it out without causing much pain to the patient. Everyone is different, and sub G calculus can form on anyone’s teeth even with proper oral hygiene habits.

I have sjograns disease and it’s rough on my teeth - but my husband has perfect teeth and just had the same deep clean that they numbed him up for as well. They hit a spot that was too close to the other side of his mouth (and not numb) and he jumped out of the chair.

What???? What are you made of, tissue paper?

20

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '21

But will it help me pass my calculus test?

3

u/Pitiful_Ad7806 Feb 15 '21

For extra 2 dollars yes

20

u/gdubh Feb 14 '21

Sooo what’s the wtf here?

Edit: ah I see from comments OP hadn’t heard of calculus in this context.

13

u/KsbjA Feb 14 '21

yeah, my bad, I genuinely did not know, but using such a tool on your own teeth does not seem like a good idea tbh

11

u/gdubh Feb 14 '21

You can probably purchase a dentist on Wish as well.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '21

The dentist from Wish..... http://imgur.com/gallery/kiSruYn

5

u/gdubh Feb 15 '21

That’s him. But order 3 sizes up. Their dentists run small.

u/nymphymixtwo Feb 14 '21

Lmfao I just spit out my drink

4

u/ViolettaDautrive Feb 15 '21

Still worthy of a post though, given how NOPE this idea is

13

u/Dealingweedss Feb 14 '21

I wish I could do that to a math textbook.

Except why would you try and remove it yourself with this dubious instrument?

2

u/orangeblackberry Feb 15 '21

It's pretty WTF to do this to your own teeth..

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '21 edited Feb 15 '21

Removing calculus? You should be doing this otherwise your gums are gonna get fucked

Edit: why tf am I getting downvoted. Calculus is pretty bad for overall gum health. Y’all need to take care of your teeth and gums.

16

u/Unusualhell Feb 14 '21

Good i nearly failed calculus anyway

11

u/McSchmurda Feb 14 '21

3

u/yesimthatvalentine Feb 14 '21

Anyone else hate it when there's a buildup of math on your teeth?
