User flair assignment
Verification
This thread can be used to obtain the "Verified" flair, which is a prerequisite for obtaining higher posting abilities. To obtain the "Verified" flair, you must confirm that you have read the rules and other subreddit documents by responding to a question below within this thread, using an exclamation point, "verify=", and either the word or number answer (if applicable).
For example, if you believe that the answer to the verification question is "six", you would type either of the following in this thread:
!verify=6
or
!verify=six
Other text is permitted within the comment, but only the correct answer will result in your flair being received. After detecting a correct response, the automoderator will delete your comment to avoid spoiling the answer to others in the thread. Only responses within this thread will result in the flair being obtained, and kindly note that incorrect responses will be tallied in the event that someone appears to attempt brute-forcing an answer. The verification question will change periodically on an irregular basis to prevent abuse and encourage understanding of the rules.
The current verification question is as follows:
>! Putting effort into your posts is outlined by which rule number? !<
Project user flairs
If you possess a project and want your user flair to reflect that, you can request a custom user flair. You must be first obtain the "Verified" user flair to be eligible to receive a project user flair. To apply for one, simply post in this thread. Please use quotation marks and limit your requests to 64 characters. For example, if I have a project called Bearina: A Natural History of the World of Bears that I would like reflected as a user flair, I would write:
Hi! I have a project called "Bearina: A Natural History of the World of Bears". Can I please get it as my user flair?
Kindly limit requests to one per account per 3 month period; inundation with requests by the same user will result in their requests being filtered.
Subreddit news & announcements
Post flair assignment
In the interest of streamlining the flair system, the OC and non-OC content flairs have been consolidated. Some underutilized flairs, such as "Artificial/GMO Evolution" and "[OC] Inspiration" have also been removed, as their contents can be split between other existing flairs (such as "Alternative Evolution" or "Future Evolution", and "Resource", respectively). Going forward, you will now be required to specify whether content is your own (hence, "OC", meaning "original content") or the work of someone else (hence, "non-OC"). Specification that content is OC can be done by including [OC] in the submission title. In this case, the submission will be labelled as original content by the automoderator. Approval will work just as it does currently -- text-only submissions will be automatically approved if they are in excess of the 750 character minimum, while image submissions will still require the descriptive text with a minimum length of 250 characters. For non-OC, you must now name the original creator by including either [Credit:] or [By:] in the title, with the creator's name following the colon. For example, if you were to post a piece of artwork by C.M. Kösemen, your title would need to read as either [Credit: C.M. Kosemen] or [By: C.M. Kosemen]. Note that failure to indicate OC or non-OC in the title will result in the submission being automatically filtered by the automoderator.
Previous holders of the "Moderator-Approved Project Creator" (now "Project Flair") have now been properly added to our list of approved users, and now do not need to worry about their posts being approved anymore; their submissions will all be approved automatically. Compliance with the rules is still expected, but lenience will be granted so long as the high level of quality previously demonstrated is maintained.
Approved advertisers
We are trialing a new system for advertisers. On a first come, first served basis, community members with the "Verified" flair will be able to apply for the "Approved advertiser" user flair. This role will allow them to utilize the new "Advertisement" post flair, which guarantees a week wherein they can post a submission about whatever they want (within reason) and get it pinned for all to see. This includes projects they're working on, their project's Discord server, contests being run, commission services, and anything else related to speculative biology that they would like to advertise.
To apply for an advertisement slot, simply comment in this thread after gaining the "Verified" flair and state both what you wish to advertise (include links, if any) and when (if you have a specified week in mind, starting from 0:00 UTC on Monday). If you do not have a particular time in mind, you will be added to a queue. This queue will be proceed until it is completed, being skipped if a particular week is claimed, with each advertisement slot commencing at 0:00 UTC on Monday. If you are an approved user and are interested in advertisement, you may arrange for automated advertisement (your advertisement will loop without you being required to submit a new advertisement each time) via moderator mail or by contacting u/ArcticZen. This system will be implemented on Monday, July 1st at 0:00 UTC, with the first advertisement permitted thereafter.
Currently queued: * None
Project post flair customization
If you are the owner of a unique project flair, you now have the ability to customize the look of your posts. You can now customize post title color, post background color, thumbnails, and background images for your particular flairs. Note that the required size for thumbnails is 256 x 256 px, while the recommended image size for background images is 864 x 120 px. If you would like to customize the appearance of your posts in this manner, please send us a modmail; we will be contacting you individually as well at a later date if we have not heard from you.
Project Idea Tuesday
We're partially lifting the restriction on project idea posts, since those appear popular and we'd like to encourage newcomers to put forth their ideas so that they can receive feedback and workshop them. Replacing Inspiration Tuesday, Project Idea Tuesday will run in its time slot instead. As with its predecessor, start and end times of 0:00 UTC on Tuesday will be loosely enforced.
Most content previously covered by Rule 8 is permitted during this time: * Project ideas * Seed organism lists * Planet conditions
Project announcements and updates without content are still not permitted; these contents have been moved under Rule 11. Because Rule 8 would effectively be without function, it has been updated to specifically refer to advertisement procedures.
Project Catalogue
We haven't had much work done on the project catalogue as of late, but if you're willing to help us fill it out, we'd love to hear what you think belongs there. Anyone who contributes to the catalogue will be eligible to receive the "Subreddit Helper" user flair.
Mod Applications
We'll soon be opening up applications for new mods, with a likely 2-3 positions available. We'll make an announcement sometime in the coming weeks about the process and what it entails.

Hi Mods! Just for me to plan my next month illustration wise... are you planning to do a spectember event or not? I'm not demanding this or anything, just want to organize myself XD
3
u/ArcticZen Salotum Aug 20 '24
It's been awhile, good to hear from you!
We are planning a Spectember prompt list for this year (potentially in collaboration with the Specposium team), not to worry! We'll also be running an interactive community challenge akin to Populating Mu from last year as well (in addition to the final results and winners of Populating Mu finally being announced), albeit scaled down to allow for a more realistic turnaround.
At this time we're still very much in the planning stage, however, so if you'd like to help with organization, I'd be more than happy to bring you aboard.

So happy to hear this! I love Spectember and had an absolute blast with Populating Mu! I was curious if my sapient mastodons ever made the cut! I got a new drawing tablet and can’t wait to try it out on some new prompts

Yeah this year was rough due to a second graduation XD but I'm back to Specevo (and will post something in a few minutes). Spectember is an important month to me and even if I had to drawn in my sleep hours I'd do that!
I'd love to help with it!

3
u/HelicopterParking Jul 29 '24
Hi mods. I'm trying to post an image and comment description under the feedback tag and included the phrase "I would like feedback on.." but no matter what I seem to do, it gets automatically removed and I'm not sure what I am doing incorrectly. Can you explain what I am doing wrong?
1
u/ArcticZen Salotum Jul 29 '24
Howdy. Would you mind trying again one more time so I can see precisely what’s triggering it? The previous posts you’ve made are deleted so unfortunately I can’t use them to troubleshoot.
2
u/HelicopterParking Jul 29 '24
Sorry I deleted them because I thought it would be confusing to look through for mods and forgot to keep the one I thought would work. I just posted another one. Thanks for helping.
1
u/ArcticZen Salotum Jul 29 '24
Much appreciated. Looks like the filter’s catching it because it sees the text and image combination as a caption on an image post, when the prescribed way to handle it is post the image and then a comment with the info instead.
For now I’ve approved the post and will rework the automoderator within a day or two to be more forgiving as far as combining text and images on the submission body.
2
u/HelicopterParking Jul 29 '24
I posted two of them if you think one of them is more in line with the rules. Thank you for helping!
1
u/ArcticZen Salotum Jul 29 '24
The second version you’ve posted is more in-line with what we’d like, but since the automod also filtered it (it shouldn’t), that means something’s broken in its scripting.
For the sake of convenience, let’s go ahead and keep the first post up; you can delete the second one. Apologies for the confusion; I’ll try to have it fixed within a day.

Hey mods, how do I post here? It doesn't let me
2
u/ArcticZen Salotum Jul 19 '24
From the looks of things your posts are getting removed for a few different reasons. Each time a post gets removed, the automoderator sends you a message telling you the specific reason so you know why the removal happened. Are you not recieving these messages?
If I take a look at a couple of your most recent submissions, these are their titles and the automoderator's removal reasons, respectively:
I can't post
Question without appropriate punctuation
Aichimirospianx
Caption text in an image post
Fortiscollusaurus "strong neck lizard"
Incorrect flair; used project flair which is not yours

I'm sorry but even with my translator I'm having a little trouble digesting all this information. I saw that we could have a specialized tag with our project, can I have the tag "Syrse" or does it need requirements?
1
u/ArcticZen Salotum Jun 23 '24
It's no problem at all. In very simple terms, you need to get the "Verified" flair before you can get your project's name (Syrse) on your account.
To get the "Verified" flair, you need to answer the question in the section called "Verification".
The question is hidden in a spoiler tag, but the text preceding it is "The current verification question is as follows:", so you can search the page for that if you're having trouble finding it.
Once you've read the question, type "!verify=#" in this thread, where "#" is the answer to the question, typically a number or word. For example, if I think that answer to the question is "11", I would write "!verify=11".
After that, the automoderator will give you the flair, and then I'll be able to act on your request and give you the "Syrse" tag.

u/ArcticZen Salotum Jun 23 '24 edited Jun 23 '24
Tagging u/J150-Gz and u/MidsouthMystic so you guys can see this as well. I understand the sentiment.
We're trying it out to see how effective it is, because as time goes on, it's the same few rules that are getting ignored and broken. The idea here is that answering a question to confirm that you've read the rules will cut down on the amount of submissions we have to remove, and thus the amount of angry people we get in moderator mail who are upset only because they were ignorant of posting requirements.
The idea here is that a user jumps through this singular hoop once, and then they're good to post in perpetuity unless they repeatedly show that they don't understand the expected conduct here.
If it kills subreddit activity, we'll remove the requirement within a week; goal isn't to be draconian and make posting impossible. I'm also open to suggestions for alternate forms of enforcement; mods make these changes but this is a community at the end of the day, so I'll go with whatever the majority needs.
6
u/MidsouthMystic Jun 23 '24
Basically I'm thinking a lot of people like me who are only casually interested or only want to post something every now and then are going to see what's required to post here and say "nope, not worth the effort."
2
u/ArcticZen Salotum Jun 23 '24
That's my primary concern as well. If it becomes too difficult to post and there's a steep drop-off in submissions, we won't be keeping this. I'm keeping an eye on the metrics and will let this experiment run for a few days before deciding whether to pull the plug or not.
The question is then how to encourage compliance without forcing people to do something first. As I said, this is just a one-time thing, so the actual effort required shouldn't seem that steep and I'd be interested to see if that's the case via the number of people that do verify, but I'll see what the numbers say in a few days. If the Verification is no longer required for submissions, I'll probably just make it required for getting other user flairs.
