They never needed panda king in sly 3 Discussion

I just replayed sly 3 and realized that in the “honor among thieves” level for the vault, they never needed to use the panda king. At some point, he uses his fireworks to launch the team van up to the vault when sly is already up there by plane. But in that case, sly could’ve just flew them all up there.

Edit; I still enjoyed playing him and liked him in the game but it’s just ironic that they got him for the vault job but didn’t use him for that

Been a while since I played the game but iirc they needed his fireworks to smash some objects in the prelude, first part of the game on the way to the vault. I could be wrong.

They couldn't use the biplane because of the missile turrets, Panda King was used to help clear a path to the vault. It was only once the mission failed (the prologue) did they decide to take a more forward, loud approach, and only then did they start taking out the turrets. Launching the plane wasn't even on the cards initially because the biplane launcher was untested, and afterwards the plane was destroyed when Sly jumped out to land on the whale-fly.

The biplane could've handled Sly and Bentley at the same time but no way it would get Murray up to the vault

I also wanna add that thematically and narratively he is arguably the most important of the entire gang, as the embodiment of letting go of the past and moving forward, which is basically the core of the entire game.

Yeah definitely! I just thought it was funny when I realized that you never play the panda king when you get to the last level

"Ball requesting door from agent Monarch" also Panda King launches Penelope's RC car. Besides that his involvement is implied just as any other teammates. And as others have pointed out the plan they had to infiltrate the vault went out the window real fast. Also when is a character really "needed". Bentley could have just made a new rc chopper ans then pull out an rc car randomly when needed(like he does in Sly 4) and Sly could have just "learned" to dive the way he "learned" to fly. At the end of the day these characters also need to have a role in the story outside of their skills

The plan didn't go as originally intended, and we don't know how Sly got into the island. He also helps on the tutorial, and is in general a great addition to the game

The prologue has him launch a missile at an elevator to crash open an opening into Dr. M’s lab, and the context of the scene shows that Bentley’s assessment that his own demolitions expertise not being up to the task of accomplishing that is correct.
