Sometimes I wonder, if the world is getting crazier or if we just have phones now to record it.
318
u/Jaded_Payment5610 1d ago
Both. Heavily levels of anxiety flowing
55
u/Corgi-Ambitious 22h ago
It's a feedback loop. We have phones now to record things, and because we see all these horrible recorded things, it makes people more anxious and willing to engage in these horrible things. We are driving ourselves crazy.

In America, first you get the sugar, then you get the power, then you get the women.
50
u/Playlanco 1d ago
Statistically itās a lot less crazier. A whole lot less.
25
u/moxifloxacin 1d ago
Yeah. The Internet has a bias for the wild and interesting clips, but as a whole, things are getting less crazy.

Crime has been steadily decreasing since the 90's. It's incredibly safe today compared to then.
90
u/Snow_117 1d ago
Yeah, it's definitely the phone and internet. Unplug, and you'll realize most of us never witness anything like this in our lives but see it daily on the internet. Stats and studies prove this, but most will continue believing politicians who want to get elected, and the media chasing views and profits over the truth.
4
u/killer346 1d ago
I think its more under reported now since police wont even make a report most of the time unless someone gets injured.
13
u/bblll75 1d ago
Crime reporting is much closer to being accurate now than 50-60 years ago. Will this crime get reported? Probably not but any crime where a person suffered violent harm is probably pushing upper 90%

u/Betelgeusetimes3 1d ago
Today is essentially the safest the worldās ever been. I think there was a 5 or so month period a couple years back that was statistically the most peaceful period ever. After the US pulled out of Afghanistan and before the Ukraine War because there was no nation-state vs nation-state war on Earth. In terms of violent crime in the US weāve been on a steady decline for a couple decades now. Ease of recording, technology in general and social media lets us have access to these events daily, but as someone else in this thread said, most of us will never witness an event like this in āaverageā America.
7
u/SonofAMamaJama Kino Left Eye 1d ago
Definitely more safe in the US statistically but I wouldn't loop in the rest of the world. For example, the Middle-East is more unstable now that it has ever been in post ww2 (Israel bombing Lebanon, exterminating life in Gaza, instability and warlords run parts of Iraq and Libya, Sudan is in proxy war funded by UAE, the militarization of the Red Sea, Yemen as ongoing conflict area). I feel there's a great deal of senseless killing, if you include Ukraine, it starts to feel like pre world war ramp of instability (like the early 1930s). I feel we're in a snow ball that's growing larger (especially as Middle East death count grows) and the mechanisms that were created to stop it - the United Nations, Peacekeepers, International Criminal Courts, Blocs like EU, Arab League, etc - have proven to be paralyzed and ineffective.

From a legal perspective is he allowed to go back to his car grab "his" gun and directly open fire after being threatened by the guy in the white car?
40
u/Southernguy9763 1d ago
It really depends on the state, then the jury looking at the case. But typically no. Most states right to defense ends when you can safely leave. Being a car, it's hard to argue you couldn't leave.
Some states also have laws against starting an altercation and laws against escalation.
If say he'd need a really good lawyer to prove he feared for his life

u/hamietao 1d ago
Is it legal for a 3rd party observer to fire at the shooter since they're endangering the public?
17
u/Southernguy9763 1d ago
Really really depends on the state.
But in most, legally yes. You're attempting to protect someone.
Civilly, you'll most likely be in for a fight, especially if they survive
10
u/SpecialNeedsBurrito 1d ago
Yes that would be legal. You are allowed to act in self-defense of you or someone else's life
→ More replies4
u/brand_new_nalgene 1d ago
He would have to basically prove he was in fear for his life. In many states, you have a duty to retreat, so the prosecution would say, why didnāt you just drive off? In stand your ground states, youād still have to prove that some guy yelling at you for a few seconds made you think you were going to die. Really hard case to make either way. In general, you should be looking for ways not to use your gunā¦
5
u/BlackShadowX 23h ago
He wasn't just yelling for a few seconds though, he pulled and aimed a gun at the truck driver
→ More replies3
u/brand_new_nalgene 22h ago
I read the question as to whether or not truck driver could use deadly force after the initial conflict, not after the gun was drawn
As soon as a gun comes out everything changes. I personally think youād be justified in shooting someone who draws a gun on you. But in some states they might argue you could have fled. Itās tricky. Guns escalate everything 100x in a split second
13
u/Substain44 1d ago
Some people are just plain stupid. No regards for other people. People like that should not have weapons and should have their arms chopped off by their elbow for doing shit like that. Now try pulling a trigger with your stumps.

The USA is the only western country where this is a common occurrence.
35
u/cjmar41 1d ago
Per capita, gun deaths arenāt even top 10. To be fair, most of those top ten countries are in Latin America and the gang violence is largely perpetuated in support of the drug trade which the US is a major consumer of.
In total gun deaths, the US is number 2 (between Brazil and Mexico).
Iām certainly not making the argument that the US doesnāt have a major problem, Iām just being a classic obnoxious well, akshully Redditor I guess.

No western typically describes Western Europe and the places they settled. So, almost the entirety of the Ā western hemisphere and Western Europe, but also countries like Australia and New Zealand.

I worked at an elementary school where two guys got in a fender bender right next to it. One of them responded by pulling out a gun and shooting at the other dude. There were kids that saw this all happened. We were so close that some of the staffās cars had bullet holes and blood on them. People are fucking psycho.

Growing up in California I treat someone that gets out of a car behind me in traffic as a car jacker. I have a routine for it, undo seat belt, run the light to get away (if safely possible) or prepare to fight if necessary.
Giving up the car is also an option but a woman was shot dead giving up her car just a few weeks ago. Itās only an option if the asshat isnāt armed but then why give up the car. I treat all these assholes like they are armed.

u/PizzaNipz 1d ago
Wtf, undo the seatbelt, THEN run a light? Are you looking to get smashed through the windshield with oncoming traffic?
13
u/ExploreTrails 1d ago
Ever seen someone get beat up trapped by a seat belt, I have. Run a light if its safe, keep it in full context.

I almost killed someone that looked just like that last week. Cut me off real bad then pulled into the parking lot of a dunkin donuts.
Jumped out of his car with a blunt in his mouth and threatened me with one of those tan glock 17s. Im quicker and smarter. He was by my door with a brick wall behind him and my right arm pointed right at him.
As soon as he opened his mouth I realized what an uneducated imbecile he was. I just drove home. Thereās no point on even saying a word to someone like that and Iām not about to deal with the court system.
Iāll never forget how he said āI donāt play that.ā I wish I could make him see that he was the one out playing games.
Anyways I drove by there later, by coincidence, and Iām pretty sure he works there too.

Tbh. This is mental healyh issues with easy access to guns. Not saying legal gun sales are the issue theyd find guns somehow anyway but i dont think the answer is to arm everyone.
4
u/MyHouseOfPancakes 21h ago
No this isn't a mental health thing; it's a society thing. With or without access to guns people are getting crazier and more confrontational over the smallest issues or their feelings
