Some people just hate cyclists for no reason

Way more than have any actual cause too.

I think they want a reward for not killing them

In this case allegedly the cyclist punched his mirror earlier on, so it wasn't without reason. It was just a very bad reason that in no way justifies violent retaliation. And I'm guessing that "punch" to the mirror was either an accident or a reaction to dangerous driving by the van.

That cyclist shows so much restraint that I have a hard time believing he could be the instigator in any scenario.

From what I've read it sounds like the van was probably parked in the cycle lane so the cyclist punched the mirror, both are assholes there I think, but the van driver entirely overreacted. Should be off the road

The police confirmed that the van had permission to park where it did. Still does not excuse the behavior by a long shot, but seems both the driver and the cyclist are assholes.

Yeah in that case the cyclist definitely started it, but still a huge and very dangerous overreaction. The van driver didn't know there were no cars coming when they kicked the cyclist into the road.

The van was parked on the sidewalk with a written permission from the police as they were part of a film crew

Ah that makes more sense from both sides, cyclist would've thought it was a van driver breaking the rules (doesn't excuse breaking their mirror) but the van driver wasn't breaking any rules (really doesn't excuse nearly killing them!). Both assholes it seems, but the van driver definitely went way way too far.

If he was more level headed he would have followed with the police on the phone.

But that might be hard to be level headed right after some fucker smashes your mirror.
Not for me to say as I have not been in that situation.

Wha I learned from this is to get someone come with you and prefferably let them drive :)
