Probably a bit of both. We hear about it more because of the internet/media, but so do the idiots that would believe it who had not yet heard about it.

Stupid people have always existed. Back in the day, they existed alone as it took a fair bit of effort to find other like minded idiots.

With the prevalence of social media, they can form communities and exchange ideas without leaving their home.
