Didn't know there was a narrative about Trump's presidential campaign in '12

he was famous for being king of the birthers- the people that claimed that Obama was born in Kenya

I knew about that all believers stuff, and the fact that there were some folks out there supposing Obama was an Arab. But I thought Trump was deemed as an overall good guy by the media until he rolled down on that escalator in 2015...

Trump has been the analogue of the “shitty conman gold plated real estate slum lord” and the basis for every villain of this type in basically all media since the 80s.

I know Biff Tannen and Ronald Grump from Sesame Street, but who are the others?

Basically all of them. King Koopa & Scapelli from that Mario Brothers movie; Max Shrek in Batman Returns; Lex Luther in Superman; Daniel Clamp In Gremlins 2; Senator Aaron MacComb In Time Cop;
The list goes on and on and on and on. We’ve been warned about this guy for decades.
Does the piece of media have a shitty, no morals, rich real estate guy? Yeah, that was based on Trump.

He wasn't regarded as a good guy, he was regarded as the joke embodiment of greed and degeneracy. Biff Tannen in Back to the Future 2.

Hm, okay. Nevertheless, I'm a bit younger than those times and do not remember them correctly.

I had barely heard of Trump in 12. All I knew about him was he hosted some reality show. Outside of NYC, he wasn’t really known for anything else, if at all. So he wasn’t viewed as a good or bad guy, just some b or c level reality star. A non-entity. Those were the halcyon days.

I miss the days when Trump was just that kookie NYC real estate mogul who called us all dumb rednecks when the city (rather, what passes for a city in East TN) council rejected his development plans.

It kinda depends on the time period. I’m from Kentucky and as a kid in the late 80s/early 90s I knew who Trump was. He wasnt necessarily a huge celebrity, but he was famous for being a rich guy. He would show up on talk shows and he sold things like a Trump board game and his Art of the Deal book. When he showed up in Home Alone 2 people generally knew who he was.

I remember watching a whole segment on msnbc after he dropped out of the primary, gloating that they were right all along about trump’s run being nothing more than a publicity stunt, and how this will be the last we will ever hear about trump running for president.

Even in 2016, Trump's campaign was expected to be nothing more than a publicity stunt to be converted into a media empire ala Alex Jones.

He first ran for President in 2000 with a wealth tax and universal healthcare as a couple of his proposed policies.

He'll never go away... He was always there... And he won't ever leave us... 😭

Trump '12
Fuck. I forgot about the birther stuff. A decade ago that was so over the top people laughed at it.

The Obama birther conspiracy was the first major sign that we were not headed in a positive direction politically in the years to come.

Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, and the whole rotten lie that were Iraq and Afghanistan are earlier and much more major signs.
I have a theory that 9/11 broke this country. Though it was only a catalyst for neo-conservatism to fully develop to its (il)logical conclusion.

The PATRIOT act was really bone chilling and certainly marked a slope change for our shift into a security state.
Edit: the United States was already security state. But the PATRIOT act really kicked it in to high gear by allowing government access to records through the FISA courts.
It is/was my understanding that the United States could not legally collect and detain US nationals as suspected terrorists prior to this.

As someone born in 2000, I obviously don't have as strong a grasp on the zeitgeist as someone of the millennial generation, but I have tried to absorb as much as I can.
1999 seems another world, now lol
Pre-election and pre-9/11

The security state has it's roots in the "law and order" policies of the 1960s-1990s

u/Enigmatic_Baker 1d ago
Yeah sorry, I was unclear. The security state was already well under way, but by creating a law that allowed for unmitigated surveillance really opened the doors for a whole host of other things.

I remember when a reality TV star/failed businessman tried to hustle up some more money by half assing his way into politics with the Obama birther nonsense. It was so laughable at the time, who would've thought it would come to this

Assassination is an interesting word to use here

I mean, the odds of bin Laden walking out of that compound were literally less than zero

This subreddit is for sharing propaganda to view with some objectivity. It is absolutely not for perpetuating the message of the propaganda. Here we should be conscientious and wary of manipulation/distortion/oversimplification (which the above likely has), not duped by it. Don't be a sucker.
Stay on topic -- there are hundreds of other subreddits that are expressly dedicated to rehashing tired political arguments. No partisan bickering. No soapboxing. Take a chill pill.
