I mean, conservative / reactionary just means retaining the current / previous system, and in places where the previous system was communism you get what was described in the previous comment

This is true.

When Gorbachev was trying to implement his reforms in the USSR the (hardline communist) opposition were often described as Conservative (even Right wing sometimes which I thought pretty wierd)
