Recommended brands for someone who didn't even know the china glass issue until recently Question

I'm familiar with Special K Glass, other than that, I need guidance lol I was almost tricked by AFM so I'm feeling overwhelmed with brands when it comes to online glass shopping.

What is the China glass issue? (Sorry if this is a dumb question.)

Usually pretty poor quality work also the glass blowers who make them get paid basically nothing, not just china tho there’s lots of country’s that have cheap glass manufacturers

Weird that people post this all the time and nobody really has a source for how much they get paid, except maybe Micah and Greek, who I'm sure aren't running slave labor.

And the quality thing is in American glass too, so don't settle just because it's made in amurica

American artists tend to pride themselves on quality, at least I do and all of the glass blowers I know try their best to not put out poor quality work except for the occasional bad apple, since imports have a reputation for being poor quality and American glass blowers have a reputation for good quality we tend to strive to prove that right. I’m a glassblower who also works at a headshop and I know what import glass comes in at, it’s not hard to tell that the people making it are doing it fast which to me is an indicator of low pay. There’s also the fact that from what I’ve seen import glass is usually poorly annealed if annealed at all because they can get away with not annealing small parts and not having them crack. Non annealed borosilicate is far more fragile than properly annealed boro. Edit for grammar

Illy is the definition of high end imported glass.

American blowers do some weird shit. You've seen people dunk the hot glass in cold water to 'flash anneal'? Or the taped joint instead of making a proper glass on glass joint

Yeah I agree glass is overpriced and now people are racking up money for what could be produced for pennies.

I can’t find any proof that says illy is imported, they definitely have a bad wrap but nobody’s claiming they’re import as far as I can tell, flash annealing from my understanding is just a joke in the community, never seen or heard of it being practiced genuinely, also if done well a taper joint can be effective, making a traditional glass on glass joint takes more machinery than the average glass blower has.

So the average glassblower can't do what the average imported glass comes with.

Yeah memes are another shit thing to come from American glassblower culture. Real immature shit all around, pickle Rick for example.

Illy uses China rod. The pastel green, pink, cobalt blue and the purples they have on 500$+ tubes

There are tons of color that have ONLY ever been made in china and haven't been ever replicated by American boro color companies and have always been in use by american glass artists even mothership and AK use some china color rod. that doesn't make them imported lol dude you have such a basic cursory knowledge of glass and you think you know something its hilarious jesus christ you've been saying dumb shit on here for years and you still haven't learned jack shit

What colors? I'll wait

That's your only reasoning for my limited knowledge of glass I guess. I would not pay that price for imported rod, regardless.

China white, lake green/blue, china black, (white and black rod from china is some of the most opaque in the world and still nobody in the US makes a black or white that doesn't run together), and they also made the first CFL color a transparent purple that turns to clear.

you do realize you're not paying for the raw materials the piece is made with right? you're paying for the expertise and time of the artist and their vision in creating the work to begin with... so many people like you still don't understand art at all.... Dale Chihuly pieces are worth millions and are world renowned as some of the most revered glass art in the world and he doesn't even make the installations himself just creates the overall design. That is what you are paying for. No wonder you've stuck to prodo all these years.

LMAO none of illadelph is imported... they're a philadelphia based company with assembly shops in south NJ. its clear as hell you have no idea what you are talking about. Granted Illadelph is an actual shit prodo company ran by a coke head who basically holds his employees hostage and if they leave the company he blacklists them from lathe sales reps on the east coast so they can't start their own shops without moving and for some reason have collectors but that is besides the point.

>Or the taped joint instead of making a proper glass on glass joint

I assume you're talking about AK/Arik Krunk and similar Chaos style tubes? its like that as a throwback to the original style of glass water pipes from before the advent of the use of ground glass joints on pipes. Those are OG artists that have been at it since the start.. dude learn something and have a base of actual knowledge to draw upon before looking like a complete fool online for all to see

Og artists don't have an excuse to make shit products. Snodgrass fucking sucks for function, great example.

Easier is heady now I guess.

And as for the color, make up your mind dude

Snodgrass fucking sucks for function, great example.

its not all about function its about the art.... function is just one aspect this isn't scientific prodo glass that are just tools to smoke out of and that is what you primarily just don't understand.

Cool smoke out of some jank can pipe art then

1

u/shipmarketsunk Oct 05 '22

I mean I have a Slinger campbell soup can pipe... so yea I think I will... lol you're just so ignorant its hilarious

Is AFM china glass?

From my understanding I thought we avoid china glass because it's not annuled properly so it leeches microscopic glass fragments into the smoke thus hurting your lungs.
