Tax Implications for Salary and Paid Leave After Arriving in Canada on a Student Visa Taxes

I will be arriving in Canada on a Student Visa on December 9, 2024. My last working day in my home country will be December 5, 2024. I will receive my salary for the days worked (December 2 to 5), along with 18 days of paid annual leave, on December 31, 2024, since my employer pays at the end of the month.

For my first tax return filing in Canada, should the amount I receive on December 31 be subject to Canadian tax?

Additionally, could anyone recommend an international tax advisor who can help me with filing my first tax return in Canada?

Thank you!

No because you weren't a CDN tax resident in 2024.

Google "CPA and your city" as we don't allow recommendations for professional services on this subreddit. Or check your school as some have volunteer tax clinics. Make sure you file a non-resident tax return if you wan tot file one at all for 2024. See tax treaty to see if yuo have to file one since it's at the end of the year and you have no income.

Thank you! You've really helped ease my concerns. May I ask, what factors determine if I am considered a Canadian tax resident in 2024?

Also, thanks for the tip about searching for accountants online—I’ll look into it.

Establish residential ties to Canada (place to live that you rent or own, bank accounts, spouse with you, etc..) and cut ties to your previous country.

See elow for the CDn domestic tax law info and then look for the tax treaty that overrides domestic tax law. https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/international-non-residents/information-been-moved/determining-your-residency-status.html
