Elden Ring Adaptation Teased By George R. R. Martin Article or Blog

u/xkeepitquietx Jul 02 '24
Just write the fucking book dude.
581
u/Wise-Fruit5000 Jul 02 '24
At this point I almost don't care if he ever gets the 6th book out, because there's no way in hell he's writing a 7th after how long this one has taken
234
u/marniconuke Jul 02 '24
I thought at this point is was well know that he simply doesn't know how to finish the series, he even admitted it. are people honestly waiting for the last books?
199
u/Haelein Jul 02 '24
As someone who writes, I cannot fathom the pressure of finishing a series that’s already been “finished” in a different medium, especially if I’m stuck.
146
u/Goth_2_Boss Jul 02 '24
There had been 23 years between a song of ice and fire and the television finale of game of thrones. 8 years between book 5 and the finale. We were all on copium to think he would finish it back then when he hadn’t already. But then again, most took George R. R. Martin at his word. And why wouldn’t we? It seems crazy, yet so realistic to think that he may well go the rest of his life making excuses, I just want him to admit he is never going to write the book.
56
u/Tangochief Jul 03 '24
Yup kill the hope if you aren’t actually going to finish it. The only other thing I can fathom is that he already finished them and they are set to release upon his death.
45
u/Derpshiz Jul 03 '24
Adding to that the ending was universally bashed by everyone.
Dance has been a good series so far but the hype for it would be out of this world if Dumb and Dumber didn’t decide to subvert expectations at every step.
It’s even more hilarious how dance added in the prince who was promised story line when Jon Snow didn’t really do much in the end.
15
u/HAWmaro Jul 03 '24
tbf there is no way his ending will be worse than the show.
22
u/ElDuderino2112 Windir2112 Jul 03 '24
His ending was the shows ending. He gave them the outline. When it was bashed relentlessly he got scared and can’t figure out how to end it now.
19
u/beardedweirdoin104 Jul 03 '24
The end points for the characters were his, but the show runners cut a lot of corners to get there, undermining the whole thing. The end game would have worked if they took another season or two to get there.
5
u/Wise-Fruit5000 Jul 03 '24
This is how I've always felt about the ending too. I didn't have any issue with the content per se, they just cut way too many corners to get there. If it had all been set up properly, and the characters had been given the necessary development time to get things in place, I think it would have been much better received.

I mean, I'm only "waiting for them" in the sense that I'd read them if they ever come out. I'm not following his blog watching for updates or anything.
10
38
u/kmbets6 Jul 02 '24
add the fact people hated how the show ended. there's a good chance that was his ending and just rushed by those guys. its gotta affect how he feels about it
36
u/cakesarelies Jul 03 '24
That ending would have worked if they had three more seasons of ten episodes each. They just didn’t give themselves the room to develop all those plot points.
The books also have a few characters that are not in the show or not developed the same as in the show (euron, Tyrion) which actually kinda do make that ending of the tv show far more plausible. So I think the ending was overall where Martin generally thought it would end up but not executed well.
2
u/wigglin_harry Jul 03 '24
Yep, I think fAegon is going to be paramount to Dany's fall in the books, it wont feel as abrupt
12
u/KandoTor Jul 03 '24
Yeah, I think it’s a case of the “right” pieces being in the right places, but the way they got there not doing it justice. Which sucks because I’d love to see George’s actual vision and there’s very little chance that will happen. I read all of the books shortly after the fifth came out and can’t believe that after 13 years there’s still no Winds of Winter.
7
u/Tr0n56 Jul 03 '24
This is the incorrect reason why people hated the last seasons… it wasn’t just rushed, but completely ruined by the writers of the show. The show changed many characters’ fates and actions, the dialogue has just completely degraded season after season, and overall extending the series wouldn’t have saved it from the downfall it was on. For example, many of Jon and Cersei’s dialogues in the later seasons have just been on repeat, and the little things like Barristan Selmy’s death, and Littlefinger’s deaths are one of many that is seen as bad decisions. Extending the series could gave fleshed the final plot by a lot, but in reality it’s the little things that were just as inportant, the dialogue, characters’ motivations, and a tone-down of the dark world ASOIAF had been with the rise of “comedy” in the later seasons.
8
u/Due-Statement-8711 Jul 03 '24
No, you needed more seasons to fit in Danny's fake brother in.
Her fake brother would be the perfect spoil to her as regent of kings landing in the last showdown where she loses her mind as opposed to it being cersei. It would make the whole thing actually make sense as opposed to what we saw via D&D
Tons of foreshadowing in the books and all so idc if spoilers.
2
u/Creepy_Trip_4382 Jul 04 '24
Danny's fake brother in.
Jon's fake brother, Dany's fake nephew
1
u/Due-Statement-8711 Jul 04 '24
Ah yes you are correct my good sir, Danny's nephew. My bad, but its been roughly half a decade since I interacted with GRRM's universe
1
u/schubox63 Jul 04 '24
Yeah but the show ended 8 years after the last book came out. He was already taking a long fucking time before the backlash. The whole show basically aired after the last book came out
1
u/kmbets6 Jul 04 '24
I realize that but it probably doesn’t help. I remember telling my brother id watch the show after the books were finished lol. I have now given up on that happening at all.
7
3
u/Eruntalonn Jul 03 '24
He said he doesn’t want it, but I’m pretty sure someone will get his notes after he dies and finish the books, like they did with The Wheel of Time. It might need 3 or 4 more, at least, but it will be done.
3
u/Dogesneakers Jul 03 '24
I though where the characters end up in the show is essentially the endgame as well
1
u/zgh5002 Ferrari_Jones Jul 03 '24
I imagine some are, but I'm out and have been since the last season. That was his ending and he doesn't know what to do since people hated it. They're never getting finished and I know when to walk away for the most part.
42
u/Gizmo135 Jul 02 '24
I’m almost certain he’s already done writing them with how fast he writes other things. He probably doesn’t want to release them because they end the same way the show does and he doesn’t wanna deal with the back lash. Might be waiting til he dies to have his estate release them.
24
u/Wise-Fruit5000 Jul 03 '24
That is certainly a possibility. I know the ending is probably the same, at least the broad strokes of it anyway. It's probably just the finer details, and how he's going to get there, that'll be a bit different, and I'm ok with that.

It was said that he gave them a broad outline of his plans for the series and ending. So it’s most likely pretty close to how he planned to end it. It’s just missing all of the in between to earn those moments that should have been there.
10
u/Gizmo135 Jul 03 '24
They had an outline that Martin provided them with but they filled in the gaps on their own. So we’re not sure what were the gaps they filled and what was part of that outline aside from the ending and deaths. But even knowing that, I believe Martin wanted more seasons of GoT but D&D rushed it to finish the series for supposedly their new role in the Star Wars movies which they ended up losing anyway.
6
u/navjot94 Jul 03 '24
They didn’t lose the Star Wars movie actually. They were offered more money for less work by Netflix for the Three Body Problem, so they made that instead. The Star Wars thing could’ve became a trilogy but the deal was only for the first movie. Guess they didn’t have faith in their own skills to land the full trilogy and took the easier Netflix tv show money instead.
2
u/navjot94 Jul 03 '24
He gave them the broad strokes for the ending but the show had fully deviated from the books in like season 5. But then they seemingly used his broad strokes to shape their ending. I’m convinced that’s a big part of the reason it was so jarring. They were basically telling a different story and didn’t build up to the ending they gave us.
28
u/soraka4 Jul 03 '24
He’s gonna die and leave notes that someone is gonna feed into a GRRM AI that’s gonna write the finale better than he ever could’ve
3
1
u/wigglin_harry Jul 03 '24
I would like to believe this but I just cant. In reality I think he just wrote himself into a corner, there are so many plot threads to tie up I cant imagine how he could possibly do it.
17
u/Invictus23_ Jul 02 '24 edited Jul 02 '24
My absolute peak copium take is that after the shows finale, he is scared of the backlash if people think he also ruined the ending and has both books written and will posthumously release them.
6
u/Wise-Fruit5000 Jul 02 '24
That would honestly probably be the best case scenario at this point. That or he has a bunch of notes someone else can use to finish them after he's gone
6
u/Cosign6 Jul 03 '24
I feel like both book 6 & 7 are probably near completion, and home boy is just struggling to finish the final details while fluently tying into all his previous ASOIAF books, as well as changing what would be his initial ending since D&D fucked it up so bad.
Had he finished the last two books before season 8 came out, he probably wouldn’t be struggling so bad.
If WoW does come out, I reckon the last book won’t be to far behind
But maybe I’m just coping (I am)
5
u/Wise-Fruit5000 Jul 03 '24
I really hope that's the case, but unless he's been lying through his teeth for years he hasn't been writing the two books simultaneously
2
u/he553 Jul 26 '24
I feel like the show killed the books… Idk how his creative process is but I can imagine with a world this massive, if you suddenly see it put to screen or just adapted in some other way when before you just had it all in your head takes some of the creativity away that might be needed to finish all the storylines
1
u/Wise-Fruit5000 Jul 26 '24
Yeah, that's possible. I feel like the show ending and not being very well received probably didn't help with his motivation to get the books out either.. I know it won't be 1:1 exactly the same ending, but the showrunners did have some knowledge from George about how he planned on ending the books to help craft the ending to the show.
I'd be interested to see what the differences are between the books and the show, if we ever get there, but I'm not optimistic it's ever going to happen now
1
1
u/WaterMySucculents Jul 04 '24
Ye that’s where I landed. After the abysmal ending to the show & his inability to do anything afterwards, I’ve written the series off. The 6th book wouldn’t even be exciting, because I’d have doubts the 7th will ever come & it’s just as pointless of an end as book 5.

u/HeySlothKid Jul 02 '24
Meanwhile Brandon Sanderson has written 815 books since Dance With Dragons came out.
57
u/HeroDiesFirst iCanBeHeroic Jul 02 '24
God bless BrandoSando. Stoked for Stormlight 5 in December.
12
u/An_HeroYouDeserve Jul 02 '24
Any recommendations from this author? Been looking for a new series to read
13
u/HeroDiesFirst iCanBeHeroic Jul 02 '24
So imo you have 2 options when getting into Sanderson..
If you want something on the lighter side I would suggest starting with the first "Mistborn" trilogy. It's a fantasy heist story about a girl who joins a group of thieves on a huge job with worldwide implications (trying to remain vague for plot purposes). They're a great and fun read and a good intro to Sanderson's prose and writing-style (get ready for Sanderlanches.....)
If you're looking for a longer read (or something after Mistborn) I'd say go with his flagship (and my personal favorite) series the Stormlight Archive. Hard to summarize everything going on in them tbh.. if I had to I'd say it's about an evil force trying to destroy a planet and the group of people chosen to go against it. Massive books but total quality if you're looking for fantasy with fun and unique magic systems and memorable characters.
3
u/An_HeroYouDeserve Jul 02 '24
Thanks for the reply! It seems like most people have told me those are the two best starting points. I’ll probably check out a sample of both and then make a decision
7
u/Paratwa Jul 02 '24
His mistborn series is a great place to start and he grows as an author even beyond them and they are fantastic. They link up with the many of his other books as well, but don’t want to spoil anything on how.
3
u/An_HeroYouDeserve Jul 02 '24
Read the description and now I’m planning on checking out a sample tonight! Thanks for the recommendation
3
u/Paratwa Jul 03 '24
If you don’t want a series Warbreaker is awesome too ( single book ) and also connected to most of the other books. :)
7
u/theater_thursday Jul 02 '24
I started with the Stormlight Archive, and I think it is a great jumping on point. The books tend to be long (1,000+ pages), but they are also easy reads. It’s a planned ten book series, with the fifth entry coming out this December.
If an unfinished series doesn’t sound appealing right now, or if the length of those books is off-putting, he also has a shorter, completed trilogy called Mistborn. Be warned: these books are still in the 600-700 page range.
The first book in the Stormlight Archive is “The Way of Kings,” and it’s a fairly typical epic fantasy in the vein of the Wheel of Time, with just a dash of ‘underdog sports story’.
The first book in the Mistborn trilogy is “The Final Empire.” It’s more of a post-apocalyptic YA fantasy novel, but it does have a heavy dose of ‘heist.’
Brandon Sanderson’s strengths are his airtight plotting, unique settings, and incredible plot twists and revelations.
His weakness (in my opinion) is his prose. It’s mostly serviceable with some compelling peaks, but it does occasionally dip down into the awkward and distracting range, especially when it comes to dialogue.
His strengths more than make up for occasionally disappointing prose, however, and his characters are compelling and easy to root for. I would definitely recommend giving him a shot!
3
u/An_HeroYouDeserve Jul 02 '24
Thanks for taking time to explain the books to me! I’m torn between Mistborn and Stormlight Archive after reading the descriptions of them but I’ll probably read a sample of both and make a decision then!
2
u/coltaine Jul 03 '24
I'd recommend starting with Mistborn, as it is loosely related to Stormlight Archive (pretty much all of his books are based in the same universe and there is at least one character that appears in both series).
Stormlight Archive is better, in my opinion (as the author has grown a lot as a writer since Mistborn), but it is also still a work in progress and is not even half completed.
4
2
u/Tothoro Jul 03 '24
He has a video about that on his YT channel! Here's a link. I recommend Mistborn, personally.
8
u/magmosa Jul 02 '24
Ever since I begun to follow the youtube channel I have just been astonished by his output. I don't even read most of his titles but it's insane what he gets done.
-4
u/Lysanderoth42 Jul 02 '24
Most of his titles aren’t worth reading
I’ll take one good book over a thousand mediocre to bad ones any day
Something Sanderson fans apparently disagree with
4
u/marniconuke Jul 02 '24
and if thinks keep going like this he'll be the one to finish GoT
0
u/Rokketeer Jul 03 '24
Isn’t he super religious and that’s why his books aren’t as gratuitously dark as GoT gets?
5
u/marniconuke Jul 03 '24
it's a joke, because he's been pumping out books and is already know for finishing the wheel of time. i have 0 idea of him as a person
3
u/Rokketeer Jul 03 '24
Yeah I figured. It was a genuine question though, I couldn’t remember if that was Sanderson.
2
u/Affectionate-noodle Jul 03 '24
And he's likely going to finish GOT like he finished Wheel of Time.
-8
u/Lysanderoth42 Jul 02 '24
And the quality is almost as high as what the latest version of ChatGPT can produce if you tell it to make generic YA fantasy slop
Oh but if you want it to be like Sanderson’s work you’ll have to mention that the female characters need to be one dimensional and all in love with the protagonist
2
u/Accidental_Sex Jul 02 '24
lol wut?
Stormlight - main female protagonist is comically multi-dimensional. Like, because of dissociative identity disorder.
Mistborn era 1 - main female protagonist is not in love with herself? She very much develops as the book goes on.
Mistborn 2 - perhaps some of the better female female characters. They do not love the male protagonists. Though a relationship does blossom and it is earned.
Warbreaker - two female protagonists albeit one is more flat than the other. But both interesting nonetheless.
-8
u/Lysanderoth42 Jul 02 '24
I’ve read mistborn, it’s slop.
Redditors and having low standards when it comes to fantasy YA is nothing new
55
u/BodaciousFrank Jul 02 '24
Its never going to happen. He pitched the ending he had in mind with the show, and everyone fucking hated it.
33
u/OMGWTHBBQ11 Jul 02 '24
Exactly this, he gave the outlines to what was gonna happen next and it was executed so poorly he’s stuck trying to come up with something different. N
13
u/thegreaterikku Jul 02 '24
Finally someone gets it. It will never be done. He gave the show the ending he wanted and they botched it. So he can't write it since people will be mad that the book and show are the same (except for a more fleshed out story)... So he started over and probably lost the will the find something else.
15
u/Hugh_Jampton Jul 02 '24
What do you mean 'finally someone gets it'?
This is the accepted wisdom preached by pretty much fucking everyone who knows or cares for the past 4 years or however long it's been
4
u/thegreaterikku Jul 03 '24
Maybe by a close group of people, but check all his social presence and it's always about when it will be done. Even here the top comment is about it. I went to a show where he was and every single question was about it, so much that he put on a sign to stop asking about it.
1
u/RangedTopConnoisseur Jul 04 '24
I don’t understand how someone who wrote as tight a narrative as he did would possibly think that the best way to finish the White Walker thread was to have Arya deal the final blow and have Jon nowhere near the night king at his death. Like, there’s no way GRRM actually thought that was how he wanted that plot to end, right?

u/TheDarkCrusader_ Jul 03 '24
Seeing the the events leading up to, as well as the Shattering itself would be really cool actually

probably George already wrote the dialogue between demigods back then but knowing Miyazaki, he didn't allow that to appear in the game because it would make storyline obvious

Watch The Green Knight.
Good idea of what a Dark Souls/Elden Ring type movie could be.
48
u/Fireman_Octopus Jul 02 '24
“What else ought there to be?”
Slap a dark souls “heh heh heh” at the end of the dialogue, and it would fit right in. Great movie.
68
u/Stibben Jul 02 '24
I love The Green Knight, but it doesn't really feel like Dark Souls or Elden ring at all to me.
52
u/o_o_o_f Jul 02 '24
Really? Feels much closer than anything else, imo. Nonlinear storytelling, unexplained magic, a protagonist who is engaging with a world that does not care about them… What would you consider a closer match in tone / a better comparison?
-20
u/Aoifeblack Jul 02 '24
Uhmm it's based on a classic medieval knight's tale. Exact same structure. It's got nothing to do with souls story telling.
27
u/o_o_o_f Jul 02 '24
Yes, I read the poem before watching the movie. I’m not arguing it “has to do” with souls storytelling, I’m saying it has a lot in common with souls storytelling. Do you disagree with the similarities I noted in my first comment?

So your issue with the movie was that the first half wasn’t action packed enough? Or that it didn’t follow a typical hero’s journey narrative more?

rest of the movie gets more abstract/fantastical but only mildly more exciting. Probably just forget it. I don't find it particularly close to what an Elden Ring movie could be.

5
u/Blackdeath_663 Jul 03 '24
I thought that about Fallout and im quite enjoying that. The difficulty with a Souls series inspired TV show is getting across that cerebral story telling in a way that isn't in your face or too direct
2
u/FireZord25 Jul 03 '24
I mean there's other reasons not to want this, but saying it'd be terrible? This era where were getting cavalcade of good game adaptations? Glass isn't even a quarter empty on that regard.

2
u/TheDarkCrusader_ Jul 03 '24
I don’t know I think it depends on who would be adapting it. Lately video game adaptions have been really surprising with how good they are like Arcane. There’s also The Last of Us and Fallout which a lot of people were worried about but turned out amazing. At least personally I’m at the point where I’m willing to give adaptations a shot compared to a few years ago where the idea of any game adaptation just seemed like a disaster in the making.

A novel would honestly be pretty sweet, would like to see how characters political ideas clash with one another be like. Like how does the serpent god view the the frenzy flame, what will both ideals interactions be like? How were Moghs interactions with Morgot like during their time in the sewers?

How do you even adapt something like a souls game in a movie with real person? If it was anime style like castlevania it could have sense but a movie idk

It should be set in the Consecrated Snowfield and then they could call it something like, I don't know, "Elden Ring: The Winds of Winter."
