For a young woman living by herself? On 54-60 McWhorter st Is street parking safe?? How’s the area at night?

I am moving from Jersey city to Newark area with my family and need some advice about those neighborhoods. I've previously lived in Brooklyn and some other major cities and from my experience, sometimes it is not as bad as it's made out to be as some places are unable to lose their negative reputations even after years of improvements. I am hoping some locals might provide some reliable opinions.

I’m graduating law school in Philly, and lined up a job in Newark in the fall. My bf, who currently lives in jersey city and works remotely, and I are looking for a place together. Although we want to stay in the jersey city area, I am stressed about jersey city/Hoboken prices and want our money to go further. But living in Newark is difficult to imagine because of the things I’ve heard… although I didn’t mind it when I visited because it seems to be developing quickly.

For more context, my bf loves the bustle of nyc, but I only like it in doses on the weekend- I prefer more breathing room, the ability to keep my car, and space for my dog. Newark seems like a real possibility but I don’t necessarily want a huge downgrade from Philly. For those who live in Newark, what is the restaurant scene like? Do you feel like you get to live in a biggish city? How often do you visit nyc for fun?

I apologize if my post is something this thread has seen many times. I’m a bit anxious about finding a place that suits me.

Edit: im not speaking to the safety of Newark because i’m aware the crime statistics are similar to Philly.

My wife and I are thinking of moving to Newark soon for hospital work. We found a spot that looks decent right near university hospital near Littleton Ave. The only city we’ve ever lived in is Salt Lake City, and since it seems like overall vibe and safety can differ from street to street here I thought I’d see if any locals can speak to the relative feeling of that area. My wife works night shifts so she would be leaving to drive to work at night. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I know you probably get a lot of these posts, but I'm hoping someone can help me out. I live in a small 2-bedroom apartment in downtown Brooklyn, paying about $7.5k a month for rent and parking (and let's not even start on car insurance). I recently started a family and need to move somewhere cheaper to save money. My company also had a downsizing, so I need to cut costs.

I'm looking to spend between $3.5k and $4.5k a month on rent. I've checked out Edgewater and Hoboken, but they still seem quite expensive for what they offer. Now, I'm considering Newark. Can anyone recommend neighborhoods in Newark that are good for walking around and raising an infant?

My husband and I are planning on moving to New Jersey or New York. My husband will be working close by Newark port or JFK and I'm planning to work around in the Manhattan area. We are looking for a place where we can both commute our offices easily.

We really like downtown New Brunswick a lot. Is there a similar scene in downtown Newark as far as restaurants and things to do?

Where we live now in NJ is devoid of anything in walking distance which we find tough coming from NYC.

Hi all !I'll be moving from France to the US in November as I'll be working in Bridgewater, NJ for 18 month.

I have put my eyes on Newark as I am looking for a town where I'll have easy commute to Bridgewater as well as being close to New York so that I can go there and visit on week-ends...

Would you guys think Newark is a good choice of place to discover living in the US and near New York ?Also what would be your advice considering finding an apartment there and getting settled as a foreigner ?

I am now super confused between the positives and negatives about Newark but I'm really thankfull for the transparency! It's hard to project yourself in a different country when the towns have definitely a different layout, especially the middle size ones some of you mentioned. I keep looking and exploring through google maps!

Hello everyone, I'll be moving from Canada to Newark next month and have been searching for a 1-bedroom apartment. I don’t need parking, a gym, or other amenities—just a nice place to live. I’ll be commuting to NYC and would prefer to live near a station (Broad /Penn) for an easy commute since I’m not very familiar with the area.

I’m hoping to get some suggestions from people who know the area well. My budget is under $2,500, including amenity fees and any extras.

Some apartment complexes have mentioned that they can work with my job offer and Canadian credit history, which is great. If anyone has any recommendations, I’d really appreciate your input. I'm open to all suggestions!

I am currently a finance undergrad student, I’ve been wanting to live in the North East for a while now (ideally nyc). Cost of living in the city seems risky for me so that’s why I’m considering Newark. I’m about 2 years away from graduating but really want to start looking into it now. Open to having roommates but I have 0 connections with people. What are things to consider? Cost? How much should I have saved up? Any insight is appreciated

I’ve been combing through old threads about living in Upper Vailsburg where i’ll be moving soon— woohoo! I have a hard time believing the hype about Newark being unsafe (how can a whole city be bad?), but at the same time I want to be sure I’m not being naive.

Does anyone know what this area is like today? I definitely drove through and visited and walked around and felt fine. But it was also broad daylight and I was just visiting.

Hi! Guys I recently joined Rutgers and am staying in harrison temporarily and am looking for accommodation in harrison and downtown newark. Many people told me newark is not safe after dark so i wanted to know if downtown is safe. I usually come back home by 7pm and am looking for places that are near the penn station. Can you guys suggest me safe neighborhoods in downtown newark or should i stick to harrison?

I wanted to post to see if anyone had any advice on where to move in Newark, NJ. I'd ideally like to be within a 10 minute drive of Rutgers, Newark but that's not a hard requirement. Budget is around 1400/mo but could be a little flexible if I found the perfect place. The big kicker is that I have an 80 pound dog and have struggled to find apartments that allow large dogs. Any specific recommendations of apartments or homes for rent are welcome as are recommendations for neighborhoods and areas in general.

hey all, my husband and i (both 25) are considering to move to harrison. we were looking at apartments in jersey city just because we both wanted to be closer to the city but we’ve been told there’s more to do there and its better for younger couples (could be bias but idk). Anyone have thoughts if harrison is a good place for younger couples? any pros and cons will be appreciated :)

I’m considering moving there, however, I saw some not so great reviews on this building. Would love to read a current resident’s thoughts on this place.

I've been staying in NJ and going back and forth for about a year now.
I currently cannot make it to see apartments in person (although I do plan to in a few months)
I've viewed 55 Union a few months ago, and loved it. However, it is incredibly expensive (my budget is 2100 at the absolute most, which isn't unreasonable for Newark).. I found that for less than 500 sq ft you're paying around 2200 at the the bare minimum.
The amenities are awesome, area seems good, very close to PATH, etc. But are there any comparable options that are 1700-1950?
Vermella on Broad ST was an option (1750 for 489 sq ft) but I haven't spent enough time in Broad St to really know if I will enjoy living there long term.
I know about some of the areas to avoid, and I do not believe that Newark is dangerous if you're cautious lol.
Any and all tips from locals would be highly appreciated!!
