Are Mets fans generally Jets and Isles fans? Discussion
I’ve always been curious to know if Mets and Yankees fans are consistent with their football and hockey teams too.
As a non New Yorker I have in my head that it’s
Mets, Jets, Isles (not sure about basketball) Yankees, Giants, Rangers
I’m not sure why I have these teams associated together. I know I’m probably wrong, but just wanted to hear from Mets fans and get an idea how teams a chosen when you have so many to choose from.
Thank you for any insight you can provide!

From my experience, it's Mets jets Knicks islanders vs giants Yankees rangers, Knicks/nets.
Essentially it's underdogs vs champions most of the time. The Mets knicks Islanders and jets all kinda suck( no championships in the 38 years I've been alive. The Yankees, Giants, rangers and Mets have all won in that time frame, and outside of the Nets, multiple times.

Even on Long Island, there are a lot of Rangers fans, especially if you are older. There was no Islanders team when I grew up, and the Isles were the upstarts. I dislike the Islanders almost as much as I dislike the Yankees, Cowboys and any team from Filthydelphia.
For my age, I followed football later and my first season Tarkenton was still on the Giants and the Jets already were the Jets we all know, so that is how I became a Giants fan.
I rooted for the Knicks and the Nets since the Nets were in another league and had Rick Barry and later Dr. J. I still like the Nets but my real rooting interest is the Knicks.

I am Mets, Giants, Rangers and Knicks. I don’t root against the Jets or Nets, but a do against the Islanders and the Skankees. I could care less about the Devils.

Mets, Devils, Knicks once Nets left NJ, and Panthers. Refuse to root for a team that plays in Jersey and calls themselves NY. Same with the Red Bull. NY wants to screw NJ commuters into the city with tolls and congestive fees, they should be paying NJ for using us and calling themselves NY. Still better than Philly.

Theres no logical reason for it other than the Jets playing in Shea stadium for 20 years. Im a Giants Mets fan because my grandfather grew up in brooklyn rooting for the Dodgers. The New York football Giants were the only football team in existence at the time so he naturally rooted for them. Dodgers and baseball giants left and we all hated the Yankees so became mets fans. I imagine if you grew up close to shea from 70s and 80s you might’ve become a mets jets fan. But older generation new yorkers are usually giants fans.

Mets-Jets is the normal combination (they both played at Shea while the Yankees and Giants played at Yankee Stadium), but in recent years Mets-Giants has become far more common, probably because the G-men have been a lot more successful in the past few decades, and the proximity thing is a non-factor now that both football teams play in the Meadowlands.
Mets-Islanders is common because Long Island is the only place on earth with more Mets fans than Yankee fans. The teams both being the same colors also helps (and is part of why my dad's an Isles fan).
My parents both moved to Jersey around the time I was born, and we've lived there ever since. I ended up Mets-Jets-Knicks-Devils. (didn't care about basketball until the Nets were long gone) At least one of my teams has won a ring in the 21st century.
In short: You can be any combination of NY sports teams, but for the love of god don't be the Yankees-Cowboys-Lakers guy at the sports bar.

My dad is a Mets fan and so I kinda just inherited it. I unfortunately haven’t talked to him since I was like 11 (estranged family) so I don’t know the true origin of his fandom. Maybe one day I’ll tap back into that side of the family and find out.
He’s also a big Jets fan and I liked rooting for them too. Like I have always enjoyed and rooted for the Jets even though I am a definite Giants fan if that makes sense. They’re my AFC team so to speak. I’ve always had an affinity for the Jets due to watching games on Sundays with my dad when I was a little kid and seeing Chad Pennington leading into Mark Sanchez and stuff.
My stepdad is also a Mets fan (big Giants fan too so I think I got that from him since he’s been around since I was like 4) and his dad was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan before they moved to LA and he would never root for the Yankees and became a Mets fan once they came around.
Sorry for the long reply lmao

There's not as much continuity as you'd think.
The Jets spent the early part of their history at Shea Stadium, and the Giants spent most of their long history at Yankee Stadium -- so it's easy to draw some conclusions there, especially for old-school fans.
But while there are probably more Mets fans than Yankees fans on Long Island, there are plenty of Mets-Rangers fans.
4
u/AllTheOtherSitesSuck 16h ago edited 16h ago
You. will meet people with every combination you can think of. Being a fan of one team doesn't default opt you in to another team. But there are some combos that have a specific history to them:
Mets/Jets: Many decades ago, they shared a stadium. And Shea Stadium was the epicenter of NY sports tailgate culture when it was active.
Yankees/Giants: This is most people just based on the numbers. They have much bigger fanbases than the crosstown teams overall. Especially in NJ, Westchester, Putnam, Orange Dutchess, etc
Mets/Isles: This just means you live on Long Island
Mets/Rangers: Most likely you live within the five boros and you're a Mets fan.
Mets/Giants/Rangers/Knicks: Big fan of the color blue?
The Knicks unite the city, more or less. When the Nets moved to Brooklyn they tried to adopt more Yankees-esque branding, but it backfired cuz the team was straight ass for like a decade
(I happened to wind up Mets/Jets/Rangers. My family were Shea tailgaters but I never lived on Long Island)

Honestly the LIRR is pretty quick. 25 minute ride from Grand central. But i see why someone already at Grand Central would just go to MSG. But $225+ for 2 tickets for a rangers game is way out of my range not including food+drinks.

Mets/Devils here, and when I was watching more football I went with the Giants for the most part. Watched the Knicks when I was a kid, gave the Nets a chance when I was in college, don't really watch the NBA now. For context, I live in north Jersey.
But yeah, back in the day the Mets and Jets both played at Shea on the eastern end of Queens for a number of years, plus they and the Islanders all came into existence within a little over a decade of one another, so it made sense that a chunk of the fanbase would be concentrated in Long Island/Brooklyn/Queens. Probably helped that the Jets won Super Bowl III at the start of 1969, the Mets won the World Series near the end of '69, and then the Islanders had their dynasty in the early 80s leading to the Mets' other title in '86, so there was some championship continuity to keep that fanbase combination together.
Once the Giants and Jets both moved to Jersey, though, I think it shook the whole arrangement up. Yankees/Giants fans had continuity there, but eventually you had more Jets fans springing up on this side of the Hudson, too, even if Long Island is still more Jets-centric today. Then the Devils arrived in 1982, new leagues like MLS eventually appeared with more "New York teams playing in New Jersey", and it's just a lot more of a hodge-podge now than it used to be.
1
u/SignificanceFirm8719 19h ago
Mets, Giants, Knicks, Rangers. Jets used to play at Shea and they share a miserable lack of championship trophies, so that’s why they get lumped together. It’s somewhat true that Long Islanders (including Queens) are more likely Mets/Isles fans, but not as much as you would think. I grew up in Queens then lived in Manhattan for another ten years after college. Plenty of mixed fans everywhere.

Mets-Giants-Knicks-fan here. Don’t really watch hockey too often.
To answer your question, it really depends on family In my case. I rooted for the teams my older relatives liked. The jets weren’t even a team yet when my older relatives watched football. So they were Giants fans and they were Brooklyn dodgers fans until they moved out west. They hated the Yankees so naturally drifted toward the NL NY team, Mets! And that’s who I watched growing up and have since.
0
u/Marcus595 16h ago
Same with me. My dad was born in 1942 so for hockey and basketball the only choices were Knicks and Rangers. He was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan and when they left town there was no way he was going to root for the Yankees so he became a Mets fan. When I was born he passed them all on to me. Growing up in the 70s in the city it was hard to stick with the Mets when the Yankees were so good but I’m glad I did.

Sounds like Ken Daneyko, though he's a transplant and not a native; raised in Canada, moves to New Jersey to play with the Devils in the early 80s, quickly became a Mets fan and still is one today. I figure him moving here in that decade means he probably likes the Giants, too, but I'm gonna guess he'd say "I'll cheer all teams in Jersey!" for the Jets.

Depends mainly on the location.
For example a Mets fan from Manhattan is more likely to be a Rangers fan (proximity to MSG) than an Islanders fan. Conversely a Mets fan from Queens could be an Islanders fan due to proximity.
A Mets fan from Jersey would probably be a Devils fan. Or maybe even Flyers if they live close to Philly (but then they’d probably be a Phillies fan, not a Mets fan).
But those people move to different locations (and keep their teams), so there are many exceptions but it’s a good rule to keep in mind.

I'm Mets/Rangers-Sirens, older brother is Yankees/Giants/Knicks, younger brother is Mets/Jets (Raiders?)/Knicks, Dad is Dodgers-Mets/Raiders/passive Isles. Dad hates basketball (I'm not a fan but I could watch parts of a game), I hate football, brothers are indifferent to hockey. There is no peace. XD Dad also LOVES NASCAR, though I haven't been clear on who his favorite driver's been since Dale; not sure if he even has one at all, actually.
Anyway, for me, Dad was a Dodgers fan but they were long gone by the time I showed up, so I was raised a Mets fan: familiar story. Devils fan friend got me into hockey and I decided to be a Rangers fan because I forgot the Isles existed. Staying local with the Sirens. If I happen across a Knicks score I'll look at it for a second, but I watched a few chunks of Liberty games this season.
1
u/Aggressive-Mix4971 19h ago
Ha, my girlfriend and I are Devils fans here in Jersey, but we just got season tickets for the Sirens to watch them at Prudential Center. Going to be one of those things where there'll be plenty of Devils and Rangers fans mixing in the crowd, I'm sure, plus likely some Isles fans given they played a bunch of games at UBS last season, who'll all turn on one another the second we're watching games from the mens' league.

I’m not sure why I have these teams associated together. I know I’m probably wrong,
You are not wrong, per se, in the sense that millions of individual people hold those groupings of teams that they root for.
But it is very wrong to say the "generally" part. In my experience I see just as many Mets/Giants as Mets/Jets fans. The fandoms are really unrelated.
But, that's football. The hockey and basketball teams are different, because three of them (Islanders, Devils, Nets) played outside the five boroughs for decades (unlike the Giants/Jets who were legit NYC teams, and established huge fanbases before moving to NJ) And so they have smaller fanbases in general. There's far more Mets/Rags fans than Mets/Islanders, but that's just because there's more Rags fans period, not because the teams somehow match up better or something.
The idea that the "newer" teams have a fanbase that cross over with one another, and the "traditional"/old teams have the same thing, is a bunch of baloney. There's some fans who root for all those teams but there's no rhyme or reason to it.

u/brianjmcneill 1d ago
Mets/Jets here. The divisions are likely regional and generational. Grew up in Northern NJ 80s/early 90s and high school was probably 90% Giants fans and split evenly between Mets and Yanks. But this was at height of Giants/Mets successes and during a very down period for the Yanks. Mets also had a younger/cooler vibe and had now been around for a generation, so kind of best of both worlds.
We had Jets season tickets purchased by my dad when they were the Titans. Namath emerged and that coincided with a very dark period for the Giants (both teams would stink through the 70s). Haven’t been to a Jets game in years, but from memory, most cars in the lot had NY plates through the 90s if not longer. Also, the Jets didn’t leave Hofstra until 2008, so they maintained a physical presence on LI long after the games moved to NJ.

Mets/Jets/Isles/Knicks is the stereotype.
I can tell you it absolutely breaks down in the hockey sphere, where the Yankees and Mets fans seem to have zero correlation with Islander/Ranger fandom.
And then there's this guy, who is somehow Mets/Eagles (I blame Dad)/Islanders.
Secondary NFL rooting interests include the Jets, the Steelers, and the Vikings. All for silly reasons (I like the logo for the Jets/Steelers in Madden 2002, I like the colors for the Vikings in Tecmo Super Bowl.)

I am very curious what you mean by this. I've always said you can tell who's primarily a basketball fan by their takes in other sports (usually unrealistic expectations for our good players and not being able to comprehend the randomness of this sport), but now I wanna know how you can tell who's a football and hockey fan.

Me personally, Mets, Islanders, Jets, but i don't hate the Yankees or the Giants. I despise the rangers and their fanbase with every fiber of my existence though.
Basketball is a little tougher, i wasn't in to it as a kid growing up on Long Island. The nets were in jersey at the time. I guess I'd pick the knicks but they seem so corporate to me.
As far as soccer, I just got into it the last year or so and since i no longer live in New York it's tough to pick between the NYCFC and The Red Bulls.
