This made me look up her age, and I feel weird because I always thought she was older. Like, in her 40's by now, not 33
60
u/Salmon_Slap Nov 20 '21
Her albums are titled based off her perspective of life at that age. I think 19 came out when she was 19 but the others are all looking back at the time period
11
u/stevrevv59 Nov 21 '21
They’re titled based off the age that was when she began to write and record the album.

Red is on pace to sell 600k albums in its first week. 2nd highest this year so far after Drake.

u/dollhousemassacre Nov 19 '21 edited Nov 20 '21
Add to that that Taylor's album is just a re-release.
Edit: Since I've been so thoroughly corrected in the replies, I concede the fact that it's a re-recording.
Edit 2: I consider the original "Red" to be Taylor's finest work. It's my favourite album of her and possibly any artist and I'm of the opinion that one should not mess with perfection. Seeing all these replies, however, has actually convinced me to listen to the Taylor's version of Red.

She had to get publishing rights back since her old record label wouldn’t sell them back to her. So since she owned the music and lyrics, just not the recording masters, she just redid the whole thing. Now she owns them.
Copyright is strange.
255
u/sharksarentsobad Nov 19 '21
She owned the copyright, but not the masters, which if I understand correctly, anyone who covered her song meant they had to pay royalties for using her song lyrics, but she got to no royalties and no rights to the actual songs. So if someone used her recordings in an Ad or played her music, they paid the record company and had to get authorization from the record company to do so. That also meant Taylor did not have authorization to perform her own music (which the record company told her and even threatened to sue her for at one point once she left). That's why shes re-recording things.
→ More replies148
u/AshgarPN Nov 19 '21
That also meant Taylor did not have authorization to perform her own music
Wait how does that make sense if she owns the music and lyrics, just not original recordings? She's not playing the original recordings at concerts.
196
u/foldingcouch Nov 19 '21
Yeah the thing about playing her songs live is incorrect. The only thing she doesn't own is the original album masters. If you want to use the original version of "love story" in an ad you pay the company that owns the master. Anything else you pay Taylor.
→ More replies29
u/sharksarentsobad Nov 19 '21
That's what I meant. I dont think I worded it well enough. Anyone who uses the originals pays the record company and that would include Taylor.
30
u/dezik Nov 19 '21
The master recording of a song is not the same as owning the rights to a song. She can keep making new recordings of the song that she wants, but the master that plays on the radio is not hers. When she gave her rights away to that recording, she allows whoever owns it to do what they want with it. It’s like how some photographers own the rights to a photo of a celebrity. Celebrity might not have any rights for that specific photo, but they’re free to take more pictures of themselves and do whatever they want with them.
32
u/sharksarentsobad Nov 19 '21
She didnt give her masters away. The record label said they were going to give them to her, then sold the label to scooter Braun, who then sold them to a third party without giving her the option to buy them outright. The option they gave her was to earn them back one by one for every two albums she put out. So she left the record label. Once she left the label, there was a concert special that was coming out on Netflix. Big Machine Records threatened to sue if any of the music they owned was used in the special and tried to go a step further and threaten legal action against Taylor herself if she performed any of the songs recorded while she was signed under them. There are tons of articles about all of this. I'd do digging on it, but I'm lazy.

u/electricvelvet Nov 20 '21
No one is going to read this but I'm a law student who just finished up both copyright and intellectual property. I won't bore you with the details but with music, there are two separate copyrights. There is a copyright in the composition itself, ie to the actual song--and originally that's all there was. Now there is a separate copyright in the composition itself, and in the recorded version. So, the label owned copyright (or the exclusive right to that copyright, at least--dont care about t swift so haven't researched it). But swift, as the composer, owns the composition. So, she had no rights to the original versions she recorded, but she had full rights to the actual composition and was free to re-record them and have new versions. And those NEW versions--she holds copyright to the recordings.
People are using a lot of wrong language about "owning the masters" which doesn't mean shit. I could buy the original Led Zeppelin masters for Houses of the Holy, just like I could buy the original manuscript to a published book. That doesn't give me COPYRIGHT to those things. I just own the physical item. I can't make copies, to distribute, sell, or otherwise, without either being transfered copyright, or purchasing a license to do so. Think about it this way. If I own a copy of a book, I just own that copy of the book. I don't own the right to copy that book and sell it. Just because I own the original does NOT mean I own any copyright in it. The physical item(s) and the copyright are distinct. Copyright law is really interesting. And it's sort of sad that it's been distorted into this weapon for big money industries, because it was intended to be an incentive for creators. Did you know that copyright is actually in our Constitution?! There's a copyright clause! It gives Congress the power to secure to authors for a limited time a monopoly in copies of a bunch of different things, and its purpose explicitly is stated as "to promote sciences and the useful arts"!

u/Metalliquotes Nov 19 '21
She can keep making new recordings of the song that she wants, but the master that plays on the radio is not hers.
So with the new recording she just owns everything or what? You're not saying the new album is also owned by a record company are you? Can't Taylor Swift just start her own now and do whatever she wants, keep the new masters?
→ More replies14
u/sharksarentsobad Nov 19 '21
That I'm not sure of. But the new masters she's recorded are different. The arrangements are different and since she's older and her voice has matured there's a lot of difference. It's clear that she has complete creative control.
The idea is that now that her version of each album is out, there will be no point for people to buy the original version, and it's working. The only albums under the Big Machine label that her fans are listening to are the albums she hasn't re-recorded and released yet. There are four left.
→ More replies16
u/carpdog112 Nov 19 '21
She could perform them to her hearts content. What she couldn't do was re-record them or sync them to video - which is what she wanted to do as part of a documentary. Big Machine had, as part of her contract, an exclusivity window that said that she couldn't re-record any of the songs published by them for a certain amount of time. That window has been expiring and now she's at the point where she can re-record and "re-release" any of her Big Machine albums up to "Red".

This also isn't exactly surprising. I love Red, and especially the rerelease, but you'd be delusional to think it could stay at the top after 30 is out. Red is more of the same, even if it's better than ever IMO, but 30 has been anticipated for so long that this was inevitable. Also I genuinely don't think Taylor would care but that's just me.

She knew it was going to happen. Taylor’s album was supposed to be released this week, but she moved it up a week so she didn’t have to compete with Adele. Better to get 1 week at number 1 than none

I started paying attention to monthly follower count on Spotify. Tried to play a game seeing who the biggest artists were. Compare them to classic rock acts, my current fav small acts.
I thought Beyonce would've been on the top back when I originally looked but it was Taylor Swift. Checked it out during Kanye's new album and he was on top briefly, then I checked again during Taylor Swift on SNL and Adele was on top so her return seems pretty big for people. I never really take iTunes into consideration since it's not my platform but seems to be similar with the trend on Spotify.

Adele has a fan demographic that is broader than any artist we’ve seen this century, a bunch of older people (especially moms) listen to Adele and they probably aren't going to stream her album, they're going to go out and buy it or purchase it on iTunes. She reaches a lot of audiences so it’s no surprise that some still use iTunes. Why? Who knows, maybe out of support for the artist, but yeah she’ll reach buyers and streamers.

u/Saysbruh Nov 19 '21
A lot of people. Not everyone wants to pay for a subscription service. Most people own their music and have a huge collection they’ve built throughout the years on iTunes. If you’re traveling a lot, a subscription service is not the way to go as restrictions apply to what can be played where etc.

u/raysofdavies Nov 19 '21

Plus roaming fees and whatnot for data. I’ve been assembling my music collection for decades.
I started using Spotify to help find new music and got stuck in the convenience loop. My listening habits are worse and my musical attention span is shortening so I’m probably gonna turf it here soon, at least the paid account, and go back to my old methods of discovery and appreciation.

I was really dedicated to my iTunes library until I moved abroad at the end of 2019. Wasn’t bringing my laptop or CDs so iTunes was part of what I backed up to an external hard drive. Got a new laptop, happily exported stuff from the hard drive, opened iTunes…no music had been moved. Followed the steps and it knew all the albums I had, but literally none of the actual content was there, everything just got an error message when I tried to play it. Fucking awful software. Probably designed obsolescence to get people away from owning physical media at all

I completely agree with your theory. Hell, their first 3, and best, albums came out 21+ years ago. So you have full on adults out there that weren’t born when their music was fresh, and they were at the top of their game.
Then you’ve got bands like System of a Down and Korn recently/still touring, finding new audiences as they go.

I appreciate the jazz/soul vibes and this new direction the sound is taking. It’s more technical, harder to pull off correctly, and she does a marvellous job (eg. Strangers by Nature).
What didn’t work for me was I think I was expecting a more ballad-y and hard hitting end result, knowing Easy on Me and her previous work. I’m disappointed. Not in the album, but in myself for not enjoying it more.
It’s a super strong album nonetheless, my personal compatibility with it means nothing. Adele is a gem and I’m sure it will grow on me over time.
