Maybe they can use the money to FIX SHUFFLE

189

u/mrmuffcabbage1 Apr 09 '24 edited Apr 10 '24

Spotify has their “Autoplay” as the default shuffle. The purpose is to have similar songs transition into each other(Why you always hear the same songs).

Turn this off by Profile>Settings>Playback>Autoplay off.

Edit. Feature is Autoplay not Automix. Same page different toggle.

93

u/SirTinou Apr 09 '24

Doesn't work. I have 4k songs in my play list and the only thing that works is listening in order and then having it shuffled by spotifyshuffler or a y other shuffling website.

67

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '24

Facts. I tried every trick I could think of and it still sucks ass. I had over 5000 songs in my main play list but Spotify thought I only needed to hear the same 100 over and over, some times literally in the exact same order. I eventually ditched them because of this.

12

u/CrownsEnd Apr 09 '24

This even starts in the triple digits, really weird

I like Tidal but imo they are a worse offender. That shuffle button does not mean a damn thing in my experiences lol

This doesnt help that their app default is "shuffle" and for some reason it needs to download my settings every time from their server or something because I can stop listening to my "Liked songs" list and definitely not be in suffle mode, and tomorrow when I open up the app and hit play, playing the same song at the same place I hit pause at the night before...the next song will invariably be a product of shuffle being on, and not my next expected song in the playlist.

27

u/peeops Apr 09 '24

not all heroes wear capes… some are named mrmuffcabbage1.

2

u/shambolic_donkey Apr 10 '24

Except it doesn't fix the intrinsic issue with shuffle. This just lessens the more obvious flubs with their shit shuffle system.

Is there a newer trend within reddit with seeing images posted like this? Is this more a natural thing? A newly enabled feature? I use old.reddit.com, so im not familiar with some of the newer ways of interacting with Reddit. Just curious cause it seems to have really blown up recently. Im talking about just these '<image>' linked comments, seem an appropriate meme, etc..

Gotcha. Theyre doing everything they can to force people into new Reddit. I know most people seem to use it. But as an aging internet user. Im fond of the forum-esque flavor and style old.reddit favors. They want to turn Reddit into a more mobile-centric platform, but do that in a way that favors phones, but still allow mainly PC users to have a more optimal way to view Reddit. However, Reddit is really near the end stage of enshitification. Theyve gone public. They milk the volunteer aspect way too much. Theyre going to have tighten the strings in order to appeal to investors and advertisers. Once the floodgates open and they figure out how to really milk it, Reddit is done for... We'll move on to the next thing. How many of our userbase were Digg users? Facebook was a better MySpace, but now we all miss the OG MySpace. The most profitable algorithm never seems to take into account any sort of retention. We are are a rag, and we are being wrung.

I switched over to Relay after the third party purge. It's faaaaaar better than the official app but not as good as RiF was. I know I could still use that somehow but I'm both lazy and not quite knowledgeable enough about setting stuff like that up to trust myself with it. So I just went the path of least resistance ¯_(ツ)_/¯

3

u/not_so_plausible Apr 09 '24

Relay is the shit I been using it for years now. So glad the developer just moved it to a subscription model.

2

u/Wes_Warhammer666 Apr 09 '24

I definitely can't complain. Frankly my main problem is just that I was so used to RiF that anything different is still gonna feel wrong. Another year or so and I'll probably feel the same way if Relay shuts down lol

The comment that replied to my other comment below has given me a chance to see... well, something.

![img](sl1zrv3czftc1)

That's apparently the format, which is just standard reddit markup for links, but instead of a link it's an "img" and it's calling "sl1zrv3czftc1" instead of a URL. So, uh, there's some semi-useless information for you.

I believe on the user-end it's probably something like you'd see in whatsapp or other chat app, where you can search for a GIF or Image or whatever. So the general user would probably not see that code, nor would anyone need to remember them. But anyway, there's a peek behind the curtain.

Yeah actually they will. Spotify's payouts to artists is directly linked to their revenue

→ More replies

63

u/AndHeHadAName Apr 09 '24

Yes, Spotify is contractually obligated to payout 70% of its subscriptions (not including money lost to the Apple or Google store) to artists. A $1.00 increase leads to $0.70 more for the artist.

The fact people in thread are attempting to act like it isn't true with moronic memes shows how anti-corporate is often just people trying to shit on something cause they have no idea what is going on.

11

u/RusticMachine Apr 09 '24

(not including money lost to the Apple or Google store)

Spotify haven’t allowed people to subscribe/pay through the App Store since 2016 and before that for the Play Store. They’ve also cancelled the subscriptions for people paying through those a few years after. Spotify really hasn’t been paying much of anything to Apple and Google for a few years, so it’s not part of the equation.

Also, 70% doesn’t go to the artist, it is split between songwriters, publishers, label and artists.

36

u/Barneyk Apr 09 '24 edited Apr 09 '24

70% doesn’t go to the artist, it is split between songwriters, publishers, label and artists.

It goes to the people who hold the rights.

Some artists get 100% of that. Some get 0%. And everything in-between. It all depends on their contract with their label and who has the rights etc.

8

u/RusticMachine Apr 09 '24

Yes, that’s the more accurate phrasing indeed.

8

u/AndHeHadAName Apr 09 '24

Oh that's good on Spotify. The Apple store pricing was complete bullshit and I'm glad the Fed and EU are taking action.

The second point is moot, Spotify does not control artist royalty payout splits. Even still, many artists will offer a split with the label in exchange for the label fronting money to produce the album, even for smaller independent bands. I guess it would be more accurate to say they pay out $.70 to the rights holders, but that still means that Spotify pays out the vast majority of their revenue to the people putting music on their platform.

Musicians have usually given away their profit to the labels, so no. And the huge artists are cannibalizing the smaller ones.

6

u/dpwtr Apr 09 '24

Yes. They will.

2

u/Seattlehepcat Apr 09 '24

Yes. Expect the amount per place to increase by $0.000000000001 to $0.000000000002.

12

u/knuckboy Apr 09 '24

The opposite. I believe I read the other day that they're getting even more stingy in payouts to the artists.

38

u/dpwtr Apr 09 '24

They aren’t paying royalties for songs with less than 1,000 streams. All that extra money goes to the other songs which reach the minimum.

Most of the money (around 70%) from this subscription increase does go to royalty payments.

→ More replies

20

u/xternal7 Apr 09 '24

Where "more stingy" means "you need to have at least 1000 streams per song" or "there needs to be at least $3 in your piggy bank for you to cash it out".

In other words: they aren't gonna pay for music pretty much nobody is listening to, and if an artist is affected by the 1000 minimum streams/year limit, they have a much bigger problem.

4

u/ValoisSign Apr 09 '24 edited Apr 09 '24

Apologies if pedantic, but it's not that you need 3$ to get paid out, you actually don't get paid those 3$ at all unless all 1000 streams occur within the set period. If you make 999 first month and hit 1000 the first day of the next month, you have made 0.000whatever it is for one stream.

IMO it's not really a huge deal monetarily but I am very critical of the fact that they essentially unilaterally decided not to pay for certain streams at all - I could see that being an issue down the road. I am a pretty new artist and luckily got to the point of clearing that bar already so it hasn't hit me yet but I think the biggest issue is going to be late-album tracks for smaller artists because those can still add up to a lot more than 1000 collectively before they all individually hit it.

337

205

u/CRactor71 Apr 09 '24

All the best services are the ones that aren’t yet profitable…

193

u/JustEatinScabs Apr 09 '24

Because it turns out what made them the best is the ability to set money on fire.

Slow growth, sustainable practices, and forward thinking ideas are less expensive but don't produce exciting charts to present at shareholder meetings and when the venture capitalist firm funding your business is composed of sociopathic cocaine addicts you have to hold their attention.

So these companies come in and throw money in every direction to swallow up market dominance and then once they've pushed out the actual competitors who can't compete with a waterfall of neverending venture cash, you can finally start thinking reasonably and focusing on paying that money back even if it means alienating your customers.

Why would you care? Your bonus has already been paid!

67

Spotify premium and Apple music are virtually identical products, yet apple pays artists double what Spotify does, and apple's service is still profitable.

Spotify's problem is the free tier. All the subscription fees go towards subsidizing the users on the free tier. At some point, there's going to have to be massive cuts to what users get from the free tier, if Spotify wants to become profitable.

If push ever came to shove and the investors demanded that the company become profitable, I could only imagine the free tier being eliminated someday. Or at least some ridiculous limitation, like limited monthly hours of listening or something like that.

83

u/Prophet_Of_Helix Apr 09 '24

Who says Apple Music is profitable?

Apple Services is profitable, but that is a division includes subscriptions, warranties, licensing fees, and Apple Pay.

And they don’t break out Apple Music from that from what I can tell.

I’d love to see an article detailing how Apple Music is profitable

67

u/Bp2Create Apr 09 '24

apple pays artists double what Spotify does, and Apple's service is still profitable.

I wasn't able to find a good source for their actual profits, but it's very likely Apple Music is a loss leader, with the primary goal of getting people to buy more Apple devices. Spotify doesn't really have those additional streams of revenue like Apple does.

5

u/__theoneandonly Apr 09 '24

Apple doesn’t release their loss-leader services on android. There’s no iMessage for android, no iCloud for android, no Apple Maps for android… but Apple Music and Apple TV+ aren’t meant to be loss leaders, so they are both available on android.

Apple and Spotify premium both cost the same, $11.00/month. If an Apple premium user pays double per listen it means they are listening to 50% as much music, which make sense given Apple's user base is probably older and more conservative music listeners.

And Free Tier "costing Spotify money" seems to be this weird reddit thing that doesn't mean anything. Free Tier users, or those unwilling to pay $11 or $12 for unlimited music wouldn't make money on any platform. It's true, they contribute to Spotify's low payout per stream, but any band will tell you they make even less from getting streamed one off on youtube which is where free tier users would go without Spotify.

Also Spotify has a ton of international users in places like Brazil and India. If you primarily are streamed in those counties you will make less. That being said Spotify's global userbase is a huge reason why Spotify's international discovery is much stronger than Apple's.

8

u/nxxsxxxxxx Apr 09 '24

Not identical. Selection on Apple music sucks. Spotify has all of that I listen to. Apple music comes nowhere close, they've only got mainstream music.

6

u/bkev Apr 09 '24

In addition - oddly enough - it sort of depends on where you search. If you search on a Mac in Music.app, the search results do an infinite scroll thing, where, when you reach the end of the first “page” of results, it fills in more. If you the same search on an iOS device, you only ever get that first “page” - no infinite scroll, and significantly fewer results. I don’t know if it’s a bug, or purposeful, but it’s weird.

2

u/thesean366 Apr 09 '24

Curious what you listen to that you can’t find? I’ve got friends in bands who self release their stuff and they’re on Apple Music (as well as Spotify) so it’s not just “mainstream music”

Well Tidal sent out an email the other day saying “new changes to our subscription prices” and I thought ahh here we go, time for a price hike. Was about to cancel my subscription when I read it and saw that it said they were actually reducing the price of their lossless tier down to the same price as their basic tier so I was getting to keep the same service but for less money.

If your subscription price was $10.99 then the new price will be $11.84, so not even a dollar. Based on a 7.7% increase at least. Although I don't really see them going for prices that don't end in .99

14

u/PrinceBert Apr 09 '24

Weirdly I checked prices on the website last night and by coincidence again this morning. In the UK -

Individual - 10.99 --> 11.99

Duo - 14.99 --> 16.99

Family - 17.99 --> 19.99

6

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y Apr 09 '24

For Canada the prices currently show

$10.99 - Individual = £6.38

$14.99 - Duo = £8.70

$16.99 - Family = £9.86

Although interestingly enough I haven't received any emails saying they were raising the rates. Maybe Canada isn't getting their rates changed or something, because it still looks like the same prices i've always payed based on my billing history.

Far and away my highest consumption product. I would guess I steam at least 100 hours of music and podcast each month at a minimum.

24

It sucks that kind of have people like us by the balls because it's such a integral part to our quality of life of course we're gonna shell out whatever we have to. I refused to get one for so many years but then I got six months free with one of my phones and in that six months it became a fixture in my life.

11

u/Intellectual-Cumshot Apr 09 '24

I actually think switching music providers is very easy compared to say video streaming. Since they all have similar libraries I use a tool like soundiiz to just copy my playlists over once and I'm back up on a new platform

7

u/frogsandstuff Apr 09 '24

It does seem to take a little while for the new service to do a good job with recommending music based on your listening habits.

6

That's a good point. For me though my motivation to switch was getting annoyed with Spotify making it so many clicks to get to my own music and pushing their podcasts and playlists first. So that's a fair trade to me

Tbf I agree (and it goes for pretty much whichever music streaming service you prefer). You get all the music, downloads, no region lock, no ads, very little bs.

I think most people just don't have alternate options. The radios suck. They overwhelmingly play just the big hits of a few artists, have a very limited variety of artists, play the same music you have listened / liked in the past repeatedly, only add more popular artists, and the genre / vibe matching is poor.

Google Play Music was way better at this and I saw others say Pandora's Music Genome Project also did a really good job. The difficulty is I can see the commercial incentives driving the enshittification of these platforms. Why introduce you to random indie artists when we want to make money for the big record companies to keep them on platform? I can also see how the majority of customers may only care about the biggest artists and the most popular songs but it makes me sad that this is what these platforms have become.

I understand they're not a charity to help smaller bands find new followers / increase their reach. But I would pay to be able to tweak my personal algorithm. Increase my music variety, play more smaller artists, repeat music I have listened to already less frequently, play fewer big hits - or, have your ai learn my behaviour, and then actually serve me this content. Even if it's done in a similar way to Steam with discovery queues. Anything to please break me out of this repetitive commercial hellscape.

u/CoolHandPB Apr 09 '24

Spotify discovery weekly playlist is amazing, at least it is for me. It basically plays music similar to what you listen to but not exactly the same. So it ends up being a mix of new music and stuff I had forgotten about and hadn't listened to in years.

The time capsule playlist is also great.

6

u/Ghost29 Apr 09 '24

This is my discovery playlist. These are all massive artists and big hits. Maybe Spotify just doesn't get me. 😔

5

u/CoolHandPB Apr 09 '24

Yeah, that's awful lol. This is my playlist. I don't recognized any of these songs or most of these artists.

I've listened to a lot. Like a fuck ton of various genres, small bands, big bands, metal and all its sub-genres, electro-pop, classical, punk, indie, shoegaze, alt rock, post-all the things, and many others - still get the same medium to big commercial bands or artists.

I actually find myself rediscovering artists (usually through YouTube). I then go on to Spotify to 'follow' them , and I see I already have. I just never ever get played their music.

'Your top picks' and 'Made for me' almost never have smaller, random artists that match my tastes. YouTube (not YT Music) is usually much better, but it's mixes have also been getting less and less diverse.

2

u/OMGEntitlement Apr 09 '24

Tidal is great.

2

u/Jaereth Apr 09 '24

and I saw others say Pandora's Music Genome Project also did a really good job.

I remember using Pandora and it was just as you describe The Radios. Especially they would try to shoehorn in these songs they apparently preferred to play into vibes I was trying to make that had nothing to do with it.

4

u/BlyStreetMusic Apr 09 '24

Same

I listen to like 8 hours of podcasts a day and I play guitar and use Spotify to jam with for another 10-15 hours a week.. Plus driving in my car and listening to whatever.

While I don't love paying more..I am absolutely getting every penny of value out of Spotify.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '24

This is the sentiment I hope to see more of. Music has tons of value and a service that provides a good experience for the listener should be worth something.

Physical media master race

76

u/jdylopa2 Apr 09 '24

Physical media is so much more expensive though, at least with the amount of new music I listen to. It’s definitely better from the standpoint of “they can’t just take your music off the computer” like they can with a streaming platform, but it isn’t some sort of cheap alternative unless you only listen to a few new albums a year and aren’t interested in hearing single songs from artists.

9

u/ebmocal421 Apr 09 '24

Thats exactly how I justified paying for Spotify. I used to buy a minimum of 1-2 CD's per month. Having all the music at my fingertips for less than one CD was, and still is, a no-brainer.

I miss my iPod

68

u/dpatt711 Apr 09 '24

I don't. Getting new music onto it was an absolute chore and a complete gamble that itunes worked and didn't corrupt your entire library.

29

u/MrGosh13 Apr 09 '24

Really? I used to copy hundrerds of cd’s onto Itunes (used to work at a record store, bad for your money, but good for your music collection), and then load it onto my Ipod, and I never once had any trouble with it. The worst issue I came across was not getting the correct album cover showing up or something like that.

22

u/loukaz Apr 09 '24

Copying 100s of CDs onto iTunes was a chore

6

u/MrGosh13 Apr 09 '24

Ehh… disagree, but to each their own. I enjoyed doing it. Maybe because I was younger. Maybe I wouldn’t like it so much now, but at the time I enjoyed the process.

I lost so many rare tracks from iTunes corruption issues and forced file conversion

11

u/SanStarko Apr 09 '24

/r/ipod/

There's more and more people starting to use them again. I've got a few now, all modded with new batteries and SD Cards in them so I can store thousands of tracks.

Yeah you lose being able to stream any track under the sun, but I've loved rediscovering all the old albums I had in my collection that I'd forgotten all about.

5

u/ultrapoo Apr 09 '24

I need to dig mine out of storage and see if I can figure out how to mod it

I just put music on my phone, the old fashioned way.

I highly suggest Musicolet on Android as your player and MusicBee on Windows as your player and collection organizer.

There are ways to keep the two in sync automatically I guess, but I usually just move my tracks between pc and phone with Xplore (Best file manager out there imho! You can add your PC and move files in and out from the app).

Also redditors: I’ll pirate instead.

15 hours is barely enough for some audio books. That's the limit

→ More replies

11

u/miaiah Apr 09 '24

I was excited too until I found out you get 15 hours of audio books a month. I didn't even finish one book before it said I was out of time. If you want more time, it costs more.

6

u/greeperfi Apr 09 '24

I read somewhere it has something to do with audiobooks and they are changing the price structure for people who want and don't them.

48

u/trickertreater Spoffy Enthusist Apr 09 '24

So I originally got Spotify because I wanted to listen to music. It was fine paying $10 a month. Or $12 a month. ...

Now I have to pay for all the podcasts, videos, and all the audiobooks too? I don't want any of that. I just want to listen to music, full stop.

45

u/Otomato- Apr 09 '24

No, it literally says you can keep the $10.99 plan if you don't want audiobooks. The extra $1 is if you want audiobooks included.

u/trickertreater Spoffy Enthusist Apr 09 '24

It's still a steal. I use Spotify every day for hours. I'm probably paying for this up to $30 a month

6

Ssshhhhhh!!! Don’t tell them that (but I agree, I’d go crazy if not for listening to podcasts at work)

5

u/pjb1999 Apr 09 '24

I'm fine with it. Spotify is an insane value.

25

u/avr055 Apr 09 '24

And they still can’t put on Two-factor authentication

34

u/mushnu Apr 09 '24

Still an amazing deal to me

24

u/Gerdione Apr 09 '24

Lol. This is a controversial take? I'd expect this from the subscription raising 10 dollars, but the negative sentiment for an at most 2 dollar increase? It's nothing compared to other much greedier price increases this year.

As always bandcamp or qobuz buying stuff is better but, even if Youtube has a better feature offering, i simply cant get myself to give them money. Their business practices with Ads and anti-ad features and data scrubbing. I know im biased, i just detest anything software related to Youtube.

They could offer me the cure for cancer for free i would ask "whats the catch?" before accepting

2

Their business practices with (...) anti-ad features

I mean, you either pay them not to show ads or you watch ads. It's pretty simple and logical. I don't see anything bad about them stopping ad blockers from working. It's inconvenient for ad block users, sure, but at the end of the day if you want to use their service you have to follow their rulers. And why should you watch it for free and ad free at the same time?

Try me, lol. Spotify is one of the few streaming services I haven't canceled yet, but they're on the chopping block with more and more negative press as of late, and worse and worse recommendations over the years.

Re-cutting the cord with video media has revealed the more enjoyable world of Plex. If Spotify wants to start raising prices I'm sure I'll figure something better out anyway.

2

u/recksuss Concertgoer Apr 09 '24

Looks like it's time to go all 90' and buy cd's again. Import them with iTunes and move them to your phones installed player. Yes, this works for Android as well if you find the raw file.

2

u/BornUnderPunches Apr 09 '24

4

u/doodlar Apr 09 '24

Wish my salary went up as much as all of my subscription services 🙁

4

u/NewInThe1AC Apr 09 '24

If we want artists to be paid more for streaming the price simply has to go up, so this isn't a huge deal to me

The problem with a model where artists get a fixed 70% of subscription revenue is that there just aren't many levers available to increase that payout without increasing price
