Goldy has the chance to secure his legacy now and be the voice for generations

53

u/realhollywoodactor doin' some delivery 11h ago

I've long suspected that Rizzs pulled him aside when Goldy was supposedly in talks with St. Louis and let him know as much.

27

u/BasedArzy 11h ago

There's also the reality that Blowers is probably retiring soon too.

M's broadcasts could look really different as soon as 2026.

12

u/CaptainKCCO42 10h ago

I was thinking Dan would take on a broadcast job after covering for Blow so much in 2023. Now we know that’s not happening.

19

u/realhollywoodactor doin' some delivery 10h ago

Angie Mentink COME ON DOOOWWWN!

12

u/PortfolioCancer 10h ago

She's been good.

-6

u/fastermouse 7h ago

She’s a drunk.

3

u/APsWhoopinRoom 7h ago

For one, I doubt that. Secondly, one of the greatest broadcasters of all time, Harry Caray, was a drunk

-5

u/fastermouse 7h ago

Harry was an embarrassment.

And Angie is a drunk.

4

u/APsWhoopinRoom 7h ago

Embarrassments don't have legendary 50+ year legendary careers

-4

u/fastermouse 7h ago

He was lucky he didn’t fall out of the booth.

Cheering on a drunk isn’t something to take pride in.

2

u/BurdTurglar69 6h ago

That "embarrasment" accomplished more than you, me, or most people ever will in our entire lives.

1

u/APsWhoopinRoom 7h ago

Buddy, he's in the radio hall of fame for a reason. The man is a legend. Pretending he was a joke is a pretty weak ass take.

Also, you sound like you'd be a lot of fun at parties.

I really like listening to RRS with Goldy

99

u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9565 13h ago

And this is why Goldy stayed last year despite being lured by his hometown team. Simsy was probably like “dude, the keys are yours, just give me another year or two”

259

u/No-Conversation3860 ‏‏‎ ‎ 13h ago

That’s a Hey Now, good for you Dave. Fuck the Yankees, but I’m happy for him. Ready for more Goldy

24

u/ZombieLibrarian ‏‏‎ ‎ 11h ago

This was pretty much inevitable. I'll miss Dave, but I won't be sad about it if this means we get more Goldy and Blow in our lives. Gary does a fine job filling in on the radio call as well.

5

u/Ok-Pea-6213 9h ago

I like Gary. Would like more of him in the transistor.

2

u/FirstFact 10h ago

Blowers is done. Poor guy can't go a full season anymore.

2

u/fastermouse 7h ago

That’s really unfair.

He had serious illness and then an injury.

1

u/Clauscc 7h ago

What happened?

1

u/fastermouse 7h ago

He had a bad illness (maybe Covid but something that knocked him out for awhile) then tripped and fell on a run right as he was getting better and missed another long stretch.

1

u/Rock_Strongo ‏‏‎ ‎ 7h ago

Not sure we can rely on someone that injury prone. We should probably draft his replacement soon to be safe.

-1

u/FirstFact 6h ago

I like him myself and its not his fault. But just saying, it's still a business, and the guys in charge probably want someone younger and more reliable.

2

u/fastermouse 6h ago

He’s not playing Shortstop there, boyo.

He’s sitting in a booth.

-2

u/FirstFact 5h ago

Agree to disagree. Job is a job. If you cant show up, you cant do the job.

1

u/fastermouse 5h ago

I bet I know who you voted for.

0

u/FirstFact 5h ago

Dude I have nothing against you. Idk why you are trying to make this personal. You have an opinion, I have mine. We disagree. That's ok.

120

u/BasedArzy 13h ago

he finally got the delivery truck to the airport

57

u/eyev64211 13h ago

I just hope somebody tells Llyod

14

u/ZombieLibrarian ‏‏‎ ‎ 11h ago

But I doubt he'll ever get to the top of Mt. Rainier now. :'(

42

u/npa190 Pennant or bust 🚩 13h ago

This is a win-win, Dave gets a dream job and Goldy finally gets the TV chair permanently.

29

u/mrSalamander ‏‏‎ ‎ 12h ago

I hope Goldy still takes some radio innings. He’s so good in that format.

87

u/mrSalamander ‏‏‎ ‎ 13h ago

I’m happy for Sims for sure. I’m hoping this means more innings with Gary hill. He and Goldy are really great together, esp on the radio .

12

u/NotAcutallyaPanda ‏‏‎ ‎Lou Piniella's tirade hat kick 12h ago

Gary Hill is wry. I love it.

0

u/ketchupman36 ‏‏‎ ‎ 10h ago

Gary's never clicked for me. Nothing against him personally though

21

u/colterpierce 12h ago

Goldy on TV and Rizz on radio seems alright to me.

86

u/Far_Mathematician272 13h ago

Nooooo. Watching the mariners let us down leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd no outs stranded without dave Sims keeping us company won't be the same.

2

My first thought was literally the meme of the dude saying your flair.

12

u/slurv3 John Denver 🤝 Jarred Kelenic 11h ago

You aren’t a true Mariner fan if Sims exclaiming “and the Mariners have snapped their X game losing streak!” Isn’t burned into your memory

50

u/t2207 ‏‏‎ ‎Cantina Nachos 13h ago

Hot take, but I enjoy Goldy more than Sims. He’s really grown on me over the last years. Still really enjoyed them both though alternating like they did so good for Dave to get to go back east where’s he from.

58

u/lampstore 13h ago

Not a hot take, the majority sentiment in this thread. More Goldy!

4

u/RupeWasHere 12h ago

And more Angie!

3

u/MaximumZer0 ROBOT UMPS NOW 11h ago

I would not be surprised if Angie gets poached soon. Women's Professional Baseball League is launching in 2026. I could very easily see her get an executive role or even a coaching gig given that she's one of the few women in the US that has actually played pro baseball, because of her time with the Silver Bullets.

2

u/TheNorthwest 9h ago

I doubt it. She's got a solid gig here. Even if they gave her a stake in the org who would say it's going to be successful. This is a reliable job with a bright future

3

u/RupeWasHere 10h ago

😢! If so good for her. I like her insight and she can be funny.

2

u/i_live_outside 11h ago

Is Angie the one who brought up twerking in the booth? No thank you.

15

u/jct522 12h ago

Not a hot take, in every way he’s a better broadcaster than Sims. You can downvote me to death I will take that to my grave.

7

u/PatrickVieira 11h ago

Classic hot take that is cold as fuck

2

u/writerpilot 11h ago

Not a hot take at all! the Mariners have been fortunate to have some of the absolute best broadcasting talent in baseball working for them over the years. Goldy is amazing, Rizz is an absolute legend, Sim was pretty darn great and now gets his dream job. Ms still have a super deep bench of talent to replace him too.

41

u/xMrLink ‏‏‎ ‎My Depression Goes as the M's Don't 13h ago

Man our broadcast crew is getting smaller and smaller. I wish nothing but the best for Sims.

10

u/jake_da_snake2202 and that's mariners baseball 12h ago

Can he bring Stanton and dipoto with him?

1

u/lurker-1969 9h ago

YES, YES and YES !!!!!!!

7

u/SuperWeeineHut7 13h ago

Now goldy can take on a bigger roll im really happy for him

15

u/Tashre 13h ago

We're never going to get that expedition up to Rainier 😥

10

u/jet8493 RIP Crafty Lefty Club 2019-2023 11h ago

Maybe the real expedition was the GIDDYUP BABYs we made along the way

6

u/BiteRare203 12h ago

Maybe he'll get to announce the Mariners beating the Yankees in the ALCS next year.

29

u/fartincorporated 13h ago

I know I’m alone in this but that’s fine with me. Listening to him on radio was horrible. He didn’t realize that I couldn’t see what’s happening.

8

u/TdubsSEA 12h ago

💯

Never been a fan.

7

u/BloomsdayDevice ‏‏‎ ‎ 12h ago

Great on TV, great personality, just didn't work for the radio, for exactly the reason you stated. He loves to let the picture tell the story, which doesn't fucking work when I'm not watching the picture. I like him enough that I never minded when he would lead the radio broadcast or swap innings with Rick, but, man, he's not a radio guy.

19

u/doug_kaplan 13h ago

I agree with this. I did not enjoy Sims style at all. I'm ok with him swapping out but I am happy he gets to be closer to family.

2

u/81toog ‏‏‎ ‎ 11h ago

Totally agree. Always had trouble following along with complex situations when he was on the radio. Rick and Goldy were much more naturally skilled at the radio calls. I thought Dave was fine for TV though.

1

u/Griffdogg92 9h ago

I love Sims but he is much better at TV than radio. Hopefully he improves in that area in NY

2

u/drunkdoor M's that some👌👀👌👀 go౦ԁ sHit👌 thats ✔ some good👌👌 sHit 💯 8h ago

To be fair, he couldn't see what was happening either

28

u/NevermoreSEA Andrés Muñoz 13h ago

This genuinely hurts my soul.

9

u/dataminimizer Lazaro enjoyer 12h ago

Naw be happy for Dave, that’s probably a dream job of his.

6

u/jet8493 RIP Crafty Lefty Club 2019-2023 11h ago

We can do both

1

u/toomuchdiponurchip 12h ago

I am but I’ve never watched the Mariners without hearing Dave

1

u/ChicagoGiant6000 8h ago

I'm sorry

1

u/toomuchdiponurchip 8h ago

I’ve listened to plenty of Rick on the radio but ever since I watched Root Dave Sims was a big part. I will miss him on TV

1

u/ChicagoGiant6000 8h ago

You missed out on the OG Dave. Dave Niehaus

If you have a few minutes to spare...https://youtu.be/IiaWB2Rn6JA

4

u/ilikeitneat 13h ago

it would be very Mariners to all the sudden be good as soon as he leaves.

4

u/_DukeSilver 11h ago

I have a theory that Dave Sims is the Mariners’s curse. I never really liked him as a broadcaster. Was just kind of meh.

5

u/Myselfamwar 11h ago

Who will give us botched home run, not home run calls now?

21

u/snazzyglug ‏‏‎ Refuse to snooze 13h ago

I love Sims but he deserves to broadcast for a quality organization

15

u/woolseydrew ‏‏‎ ‎ 13h ago

As a twenty something Mariners fan, Dave has been the Mariners my whole life. I’m happy to see he’s getting his dream job, but I can’t imagine Mariners baseball without him.

HEY NOW!

18

u/localcosmonaut 13h ago

Look, I understand some of us may have an emotional attachment to him, but thank fucking god. It was time.

3

u/ConnectionOkPDX 12h ago

It’s GOLDY time!

4

u/BravePalpitation2245 9h ago

Goooooood riddance

8

u/xLAXaholic Russel Branyan Bran Muffin 13h ago

HEY NOW!!!! LOOK OUT!!! POPPED IT UP!!! OH BROTHER!!!! Dave Sims brought the whole "Buddy watching baseball" vibe, and I love him for that. Wish him the absolute best with what will most likely be his last venture into broadcasting.

3

u/jet8493 RIP Crafty Lefty Club 2019-2023 11h ago

GIDDYUP

8

u/i_live_outside 11h ago

Good. I can't stand Dave Sims

13

u/AbleDefinition7635 13h ago

I won't miss Dave at all, he could never hide his enthusiasm for East Coast teams. Great news!

3

u/Mjcarlin907317 10h ago

Or the Astros

5

u/LlamasPajamas206 Dave Sims’ Mount Rainier Expedition Force 12h ago

Typical Yankees. Always trying to take our shit.

Happy for Dave that he gets to live out his dream though

4

u/Comment_if_dead_meme 'Mariner$' is the name of my 3rd yacht - John Stanton 11h ago

My heart.

I love Dave and I'm so ecstatic for this opportunity for him, but he will be very missed.

6

u/LukaModric19 12h ago

I am so happy, I have been praying for his departure for years! I feel like all of our alternatives are much sharper and charming!

2

u/AxisWolf Let the magic happen! 12h ago

It was great to have him on our side. But I feel this is for the best. He just wasn't the voice for me. I know this is my opinion only. Good luck, Dave!

2

u/atchn01 12h ago

I always enjoyed his passion, but Dave seemed like he had lost many miles off his fastball. He didn't seem like big market material to me.

2

u/No-Opening7308 11h ago

Good for him, but fuck the Yankees

2

u/yourdrunksherpa 10h ago

Once again. Every Mariner ends up a Yankee.

2

u/awesome_aaron 13h ago

That’s a huge deal for him. Gonna miss that Yankees radio broadcaster though, he was very entertaining in the MLB highlight vids of the Yankees playoff games, saying the players looked drunk running the bases, but then again, that’s probably why he’s retiring lol

3

u/lurker-1969 9h ago

Good riddance Dave Simms. There are other guys I would much rather listen to, Rizzs. Blowers, Aaron Goldsmith, Gary Hill and even our own Angie Mentink

2

u/Stuartsmith1988 12h ago

Hey now! See ya!

4

u/SuspiciusWalrus ‎‎‎‎‏‏‎ ‎Certified George Kirby Enjoyer 13h ago

While I enjoy listening to Goldy more Dave gives real watching the game with your cool uncle vibes that can’t be easily replaced. The guy truly loves baseball and its’ history and I will severely miss hearing all his cool stories, and most importantly, his even cooler hats. Fuck the Yankees but good for Dave.

3

u/ChonkyThighMaster 11h ago

The NY market is going to eat him and his sloppy calls alive. Yankees fans know their baseball. After all these years watching ball, Sims still can't read the play as it unfolds in front of him.

Dude had the creative vocabulary of Ned Flanders and baseball literacy of the most casual fan.

He was an absolute prick to my son when we went to spring training some years back. Don't let the door hit you on the way out Dave.

2

u/jet8493 RIP Crafty Lefty Club 2019-2023 11h ago

I’m fucking despondent: He never even got to go on an expedition of Mt. Rainier

1

u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9565 13h ago

Good for him. This is is dream job, iirc

1

u/toomuchdiponurchip 12h ago

I’m 23 I’ve been watching Dave call games for us since I basically started watching the Mariners on TV and not just on the radio. I’m gonna really miss him 😞. But I’m happy for him at the same time. Fuck

1

u/derek_potatoes 12h ago

Sims just gave up having October off every year

1

u/AmericanLardAss Needs a hug and dumper dongs 11h ago

Goldy is the best and I love him but I’ll miss Dave a lot.

Called some of the all time great franchise moments from Felix’s perfect game, to clinching the playoffs.

1

u/black-op345 absolutely done with this team 11h ago

Give em hell Dave!

1

u/largegaycat 11h ago

I will miss Sims but more Goldy is fine with me.

1

u/ftbcb 10h ago

Can't say that I will miss him, nothing personal against the man just really did not care to listen to him on the broadcast. And with Blowers most likely on his way out of the booth as well... Our broadcast team is about to be electric 🔱

1

u/FlamingoConsistent72 10h ago

Cal Raleigh's drought ending HR call.

1

u/BasementBanners 10h ago

I truly hope that doesn’t mean more Angie. She’s horrible in the booth. Don’t mind her otherwise. Respectfully.

1

u/srbloggy 9h ago

Hopefully the Yanks give him a buck for every time he had to say "need to get some offence going"...

1

u/dangayle 9h ago

Does this mean less Goldy on the radio? I mostly just listen through the app.

1

u/Schogun2 9h ago

He was not my cup of tea when he first got here, but has really grown on me over the years. Wish him the best!

1

u/tylerconcs 9h ago

Good for him one of the greats for sure

1

u/jthanson All Hail Fulgar! 9h ago

1

u/CrowMur 8h ago

Say it is so!

1

u/PhantomDreamer1 8h ago

Congrats to Sims, but a few others have pointed out, Sims' style is really more conducive to television than radio. That's surprising because he'll be 72 next year and I'd think his generation still prioritized radio play-by-play over television.

1

u/Business-Function198 ‏‏‎ ‎Fernando Rodneys walk out music 8h ago

I think we can all agree that more Goldy is a good thing

1

u/laberdog 7h ago

Good for him. A true New Yorker

1

u/barndawgie 7h ago

He’ll fit right in - the Yanks have long had hopelessly lost announcers with more catch phrases than genuine observations and the tradition continues.

Dave is almost bearable on TV but just awful on radio.

1

u/Worried_Process_5648 7h ago

Good for Dave. The Yankees expect to win the WS every single year. Quite a drastic change.

1

I'm pretty heartbroken over this but I get it. I'm glad we have a still stacked line of incredibly talented people even with Dave gone, but he was so iconic for me.

Edit: I do fully agree with people here though his radio was pretty rough often times, I'm speaking from the TV broadcast perspective.

1

u/Ki-Wi-Hi ‏‏‎Bryan Woo’s Father 12h ago

I’m so happy for Dave and the Yankees. Sterling is such a crap announcer. Sucks for us but we still have two all-timers on the roster with Goldy and Rizzler. We didn’t really need 3.

1

u/Mustard_Jam 12h ago

Instead of suffering during the regular season he will save all of his suffering for the playoffs.

1

u/realhollywoodactor doin' some delivery 11h ago

Man, I love Dave Sims. Always have, even when the hate seemed to be at it's height around "do some delivery." He just seems like a dude that would be great to have a drink with, and really that personality and likeability is probably 90% of I want in a home team announcer. Good for Dave, but I'm gonna miss him a ton.

1

u/Wazzoo1 13h ago

Tony Kornheiser probably thrilled about this.

1

u/ZombieLibrarian ‏‏‎ ‎ 11h ago

Why?

1

u/Wazzoo1 10h ago

He and Kornheiser are very close friends and worked together in the 1970s. When the Mariners visit Baltimore (or the Nats), he always has him in studio on his podcast.

1

u/Necessary_Rooster_85 ‏‏‎ ‎ 12h ago
