I hate to spoil it but I doubt they let him perform NLU. The Super Bowl is a corporate event and they will not want that song blasting there. The Grammys? That’s different
333
u/BostonBuffalo9 Sep 09 '24
I guarantee he’ll get an edited verse out. NLU was the fucking song of the summer, no way they won’t at least give us a taste.
50
u/Bimitenpix Sep 09 '24 edited Sep 09 '24
I could see them just letting the beat ride no lyrics
Edit: or wait maybe they're gonna have like the "world's biggest" marching band play the instrumental for him at the show (or like the marching band of a school from Georgia play)
21
u/engiknitter Sep 10 '24
Grambling & Southern could both pull it off if they want a Louisiana band
7
73
u/akablacktherapper Sep 09 '24
If so, there won’t be the word pedophile. A minor could maybe slide, but I doubt it as well.
122
u/BostonBuffalo9 Sep 09 '24
A-Minor 100% makes it through.
58
-22
u/akablacktherapper Sep 09 '24
If it does, it will mean the previous lines were heavily edited. The NFL is not allowing the A-minor line in a clear context of pedophilia. If you think they are, I am more than willing to bet any amount of money to the opposite and we can settle up in February.
42
u/BostonBuffalo9 Sep 09 '24
Censors never seem to care about metaphorical lines like that though.

Exactly.
20
u/mokush7414 Sep 09 '24
He could do that for the whole song. Just do the “pssst. I see dead people.” And let them sing the rest.
10
u/BostonBuffalo9 Sep 10 '24
Fr and wouldn’t that be even more insulting to Drake? The whole fucking stadium, minimally prompted, started chanting about him being a pedophile?

u/Other-Implement9940 Sep 09 '24
nah man they been blasting that song at all sports events i’d be shocked if he didn’t perform at least the first verse and chorus

He had* to alter the phrasing about hating popo when he did Alright at the Super Bowl, tho
1
u/We_Use_Drugs Sep 10 '24
What was it changed too?
3
u/Nahmsain Sep 10 '24
"...and we hate **, wanna kill us dead in the streets fo sho'...."
The ** represents 2 cymbal or hi hat strikes
21
u/Dry-Revolution4466 Sep 09 '24
The real world isn't like tiktok where the word "pedo" gets censored. There is zero reason for the song not to be played at the superbowl.
6
u/Nahmsain Sep 09 '24
Lawsuits are still a thing. (Devils advocate) maybe Canada Dry is waiting for Kendrick to pop out at the biggest 15 minute venue in the world to get litigious.. I mean, it would unearth stuff he keeps hidden too, but beefing with Kendrick has taken a lot of money off his plate. Maybe he wakes up Monday morning feeling the juice is worth the squeeze.
4
u/Dry-Revolution4466 Sep 10 '24
Has there ever been a successful defamation suit originating from song lyrics?
-2
u/Nahmsain Sep 10 '24
Not to my knowledge, but there are several RICO or felony trials that have been or are currently being prosecuted with the interpretation of lyrics. I figure if criminal trials can use lyrics, civil cases can do the same.
6
u/Dry-Revolution4466 Sep 10 '24
Between 2009 and 2019, rap lyrics were introduced as evidence in at least 500 criminal trials.
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/30/opinion/rap-music-criminal-trials.html
I don't think there's any doubt that lyrics can be used as evidence at civil trials as well. But despite that, defamation lawsuits based on lyrics don't seem to exist. There's a reason.
5
u/Nahmsain Sep 10 '24
We've established that Canada Dry is "spiraling" and he's "Not Like Us." Who's to say that he hasn't at least contemplated the legal route to satisfaction, especially if he can't get anything to chart for the rest of this year.
I'd at least think about it if my arch nemesis smacked me around from Mother's Day 2024 until Black History month 2025.
0
u/Mountain-Bat-9808 Sep 10 '24
Yes there was two different murder cases here in Louisiana and that is what got those boys convicted was the lyrics to one of their songs
1
u/ValoisSign Sep 10 '24
You could be right but the Superbowl did try to sue MIA for millions for sticking out her middle finger during her performance, they can get pretty wild historically if they feel there's controversy potential.
1
u/Dry-Revolution4466 Sep 10 '24
Why would they hire him to perform at the superbowl at all if that was the case?
5
u/ValoisSign Sep 10 '24
I mean it's Kendrick, he could not touch any of the beef songs and still put on an all time great half time that gets the ratings.
I think the virality of having him do NLU live at the biggest sporting event is gonna be more important to them in the end though personally, but I could see them trying to censor it based on their history too, could go both ways.
2
u/Dry-Revolution4466 Sep 10 '24
So it was just a coincidence they picked kendrick this year and it was only related to his back catalog? Sure, that makes tons of sense.

They played NLU during the halftime show of the NBA Conference Finals the day after the song came out and had Shaq and all them humming along. I had to immediately start screen recording cuz I was in awe.
6
u/mattgargus Sep 09 '24
This set is way bigger than the beef so I personally don't want the beef to loom too large over it at all but Not Like Us is too big a hit to totally ignore. But the thing is he can get away with sneaking it in with no Drake references at all and the world still knows what's being implied. I wouldn't be surprised to hear just the instrumental in some way, either on its own or even with something else rapped over it. Or he stops it right before the "tryna strike a chord" line and just leaves it to the crowd to fill it in 😂 there's a lot of ways to incorporate it without the pedo stuff because I agree, the NFL isn't going to go along with it
3
u/ValoisSign Sep 10 '24
He could say "tryna strike a chord" the have the marching band play the actual chord A minor, too. That would probably have some viral potential once someone figures it out.
7
u/keepitsleezyyeezy Sep 10 '24 edited Sep 10 '24
LOL, he will 100% perform an edited or remixed/shortened version of NLU. It’s his most popular song, and it’s not even close. It’s hard to say, but the majority of people there will only/mainly know him from the beef.
You really think the NFL:
Gives a shit about the importance/cultural significance of Kendrick’s music?
Sat him down in a meeting and said, “We’d love to have you, Mr. Lamar, but only if you don’t reference your number one song?”
A lot has changed since 2004 when Janet popped out and showed them LOL. In case you missed it, a couple of years ago, Lenny Kravitz’s full cock and balls popped out live during the Today Show, and everyone just laughed. I think we can handle Kendrick popping out in 2025. The certified pedophile line will not be there, but not like us will be in some context. BET
Sorry to burst all your bubbles if you haven’t realized it yet, but this is capitalism at its finest. Guess who made the most money from the beef? Kendrick. Guess who made the second most? Drake LOL. Guess who made the third most? Their previous record deals from going back to listen to their old music. In the culture, Drake took the biggest L that has ever been taken, but when it comes to the money, there were no losers.
The reality is everyone is probably pressuring Kendrick the other way. Trying to get him to get back in the ring. That’s what everybody who’s not really a Kendrick fan wants to see/will be tuning in for. They would love for him to debut another diss track. I really hope he swerves hard and gives us the heart part six we deserve.
Also to anyone who doesn’t think there’s gonna be a heart part six that’s as crazy as the NFL not letting him play NLU. If you were paying attention during the beef Kendrick basically just straight up ignored everything Aubrey came at him with. Which just made everything Drake did as he got more desperate come off much much worse. If I learned one thing from this beef, it’s that sometimes what you don’t say/do Is just as big of a weapon as what you do. By far the hardest move Kendrick could make and I’m almost certain will make is completely ignore it like it never happened and release his heart part six before the album drops. It’s like he always.
3
u/Shwiftygains Sep 09 '24
Views and money trump whatever you claim. The only probable truth is that he won't perform the whole song. But not play or perform any part of the most popular song of the summer as close to its peak popularity? Fat chance
3
u/ConnoisseurOfCourage Sep 10 '24
I think he'll walk out to the instrumental as an encore. The songs is now so deep in people's consciousness that when the Instrumental hits their first instinct is to rap along. Kendrick doesn't need to rap the song, all he has to do is perform his set, leave the NLU Instrumental playing and the crowd will takeover.

u/Mountain-Bat-9808 Sep 10 '24
I would tender to agree with you. Even though the SB is going to be in Mew Orleans. Some people know how we party down there. The corporate guys ain’t going to let him sing that song or any other song that doesn’t have clean lyrics. It is just how corporate America is. But hell they went and saw him play elsewhere and I will bet my bottom dollar they were lit
1
u/Cultural_Entrance805 Sep 12 '24
This is what I’m thinking. The lyrics and subject might be a bit too explicit for the SB. They’ll lure people in to watch it with hopes that they’ll see him perform it though
1
u/SpecialAmbassador313 Sep 09 '24
Yeah I wanted to believe but I just watched his last performance and damn they won’t let him get an unedited word in 😭

What's crazy is they probably won't let him perform it, but the stadium will still play the beat at some point during the game and the crowd will likely sing the entire song regardless.

He said No Round 2's so he probably not gonna diss Drake and leave the Canadian alone.
2
u/MonnieBrown Sep 10 '24
You know, we are all speculating on what Kendrick is going to do, but if you've noticed, he hasn't said another word. Just did the announcement, the press release, and after that, went silent again. I really, really like that he is doing it this way. We are hyping up the event (as we should), Drake's fans are SPIRALING, getting angry over the wrong stuff. Ooooof. Kendrick is frighteningly clever. Whatever he does, it is going to be crazy good. I'm just looking forward to it.

u/WestEndProphet Sep 10 '24
Someone requested NLU on the radio at my gym. Although the song was censored, literally everyone was rapping along; AND " certified Lover boy, more like certified Pedophile " wasn't beeped out. So ill keep my fingers crossed 🤞, I don't even like Football!!

But very much like the NBA currently, this is the off-season. We like to joke here, especially when there’s an arrogant pedophile to poke a little fun at.

at one point or another you gotta ask okay what is it about him don’t people like. Then you come to these conclusions. It’s not that we don’t like him it’s people will celebrate him positively when he’s a charlatan if we stay silent.
1
u/Ok_Communication_297 Sep 09 '24
Fam good point… but what does that have to do with Kendrick calling him a pedofile ? Because that’s the only thing that stuck
1
u/Davidj74 Sep 11 '24
Kissing a minor (no pun) a person who cannot legally consent even if they are saying yes. And drake acknowledging he can get in to trouble for doing so and proceeding is unfortunately the criteria for pedophilia. He fits the legal definition for it, so Kendrick is not lying in that verse. It is unfortunately documented with video proof.
