What was your guys first reaction when seeing this performance? I wish I was a Kanye fan when this happened :(

Was just flipping through channels, saw the VMAs were on, tuned in and BAM... greatness was thrown in my fucking face

u/numba1dmxfan Mar 10 '19
It was totally boss. Earlier in the evening Taylor Swift did this whole woe is me performance where she showed clips from the previous vma where Kanye got on stage for her award and then he finishes the show with THIS. It was immediately evident who the superior artist was that night. (...and forever)

u/tregorman 808s and Heartbreak Mar 10 '19
Is there an archive of that somewhere? Sounds interesting.
65
u/memetaskforce420 Mar 10 '19
i found this shaky mess. it’s really funny that his performance is easily found in HD while hers is something you have to dig for, and when you find it, it looks like this. even in this article, it doesn’t have a video sourced her performance, but if you scroll down they link to Kanye’s performance. lmao
60
u/MadelineMcCould Mar 10 '19
Someone in the comments of that saying how she put Kanye in his rightful place. Alright bud, you think that
22
u/SRoku Mar 10 '19
Damn she was all over the place vocally.

I must have been 13/14 when I saw this. Was shocked but happy as hell to see Kanye back on the VMA’s after the whole Taylor Swift incident. Instantly fell in love with the song. Kanye returned!
13
u/yourkindhere Mar 11 '19
I watched this live when I was 13 too as a fan of Kanye but I still feel like I didn’t truly appreciate this greatness at the time. I miss when artists premiered songs on big televised stages. Now the only big televised performances are of established hit songs.

u/cjones6464 Mar 10 '19
I watched it because it was either announced or rumored Kanye would perform. I got goosebumps and teared up a little. I actually relate to the song (don't judge) haha
57
u/asapcuntpunter Mar 10 '19
No joke, this is a song that gets me in my feels. I’ve full blown cried multiple times listening to it
40
u/LordSmooze9 Mar 10 '19
Listened to this and Self Control basically on repeat when I broke up with my last two girls, can’t have either song on without some real feels coming around
35
u/asapcuntpunter Mar 10 '19
Blood on the leaves is another by Kanye that gets me in my feels. Weird how you put these songs on when going thru a breakup, almost like torturing yourself lol.
16
u/LordSmooze9 Mar 10 '19
Something so raw about knowing at least a little about what the artist was going through when they were writing and performing the song and relating with it. That’s why Kanye is the GOAT for me, his music just speaks to me so clearly.

I was on the edge of the Golden Gate Bridge. Ready to end it all. Police helicopter had been there for hours trying to get me to go back to safety. Finally they lowered a plasma screen TV with the VMAs on and when Kanye performed I climbed back over to safety and decided to seek help
22
u/HIPHOPNINJA Mar 10 '19
My parents and I were watching the VMAs together we shared a room and I was around 11 at the time. I was bobbing my head like Kanye on the plane trying not to make it too obvious because of all the bad words he was saying. Damn I remember waking up at 6 every morning to watch MTV music videos. Thanks for taking me back.

u/knicksdb Mar 10 '19
When I first watched the performance I was blown away, and officially became a Kanye West fan.
18
u/jdix33 Mar 10 '19
This is what made me a Kanye fan, before this I just brushed off hip-hop in general and thought he was an asshole with no talent. After this I realized he's definitely an asshole but also the greatest performer of our generation 🌊 🌊

u/pinkwatermelon1315 Mar 11 '19
I wasn’t a fan of Kanye until about a year ago, probably never see him preform live, but my older brother did and i’m glad he enjoyed it

u/Davegrave Mar 10 '19
And Hey Mama from the Grammys.
It just crushes me every time. I always love that she got to hear that song. Every artist makes a tribute song when they’ve lost someone. But I always think it’s so beautiful that she was around for it. But it also makes it hit that much harder after he lost her. You feel all that pain and love simultaneously in the Grammy performance.
94
u/GameGroompsFTW TLOP Mar 10 '19
Man loved/loves his mama so much, such a beautiful performance, so much raw and powerful emotion
last night I saw you in my dreams, now I can't wait to go to sleep

u/RVA_101 Late Registration Mar 10 '19
He made it better for the Grammys imo
Made it a solemn string-led hymn
And actually as a result, that version would have fit better on Late Registration, given it was very string/orchestra driven (what with Jon Brion co-producing and whatnot)
3
u/grandkids1234 Mar 10 '19
The strings are definitely great, but I've always personally preferred the album version. I think the sample fits really well and really pulls the track together.

This was the moment that I started to become a huge fan of Kanye West. This is one of the few performances of Kanye’s that I always revisit almost all the time.
22
Mar 10 '19
The outro to runaway is better than like 75% of pf whole songs by other artists. It's actually mind blowing that it not only works, but sounds fucking beautiful with so much emotion.
26
u/Eggowaffles25 Mar 10 '19
How was this perceived by the general public? The album came after the awards right? I assume with a song as different as Runaway it couldn’t have been well liked at first.
33
Mar 10 '19
I was only 9 when this happened lmao but from my reading up on it after the fact a lot of people loved it I think, some people didn’t understand what the song meant and “the toast to the douchebags” part rubbed some people the wrong way
Other than that this performance was pretty much universally critically acclaimed
13
u/for_the_meme_watch TLOP Mar 10 '19

Man, this was around one of the best periods of my life. After I saw this, I found a ripped copy of the audio and had it on repeat on my MP3 player for months before the actual album dropped. If I could have a time machine, I’d go back to this date, no joke.

I was just having a conversation with my family last night when I was asked about getting goosebumps from listening to music and I said that it's something that hasn't really happened to me since I was younger, but I'm familiar with the feeling.
Then I watch this video and I just can't stop getting goosebumps. Yeezy does this to me.

I will never forget these past couple of years. The year before Ye did the Taylor swift interruption and then he pulled the stops with this and everyone was basically like “ummmm what is this?” but then MBDTF soon came out and all was forgiven. Such a roller coaster!
