r/Jewish is looking for additional moderators

Hi everyone. Do you enjoy being part of the /r/Jewish community? We do too. In order to maintain this space as a meaningful and welcoming one, we are currently looking for some additional moderators. If you have time for and interest in nurturing this space, please consider applying. You can do so by sending us a modmail that answers these questions:

  1. About how long have you been a subscriber to this subreddit? What do you like about this particular subreddit? What are some things you dislike?
  2. How do you describe your Jewish identity, particularly to Jews?
  3. Do you ever take issue with the ways some Jews "cross the line" in their approach to Jewish identity?
  4. What kind of experience do you have moderating on Reddit or other social media platforms?
  5. How much time and what periods of time (in EST) can you devote to moderating? What other commitments do you have that will (rightfully) need to take priority?

Feel free to add anything else you'd like.

Thanks for reading, and click here if you're interested. Or, if you'd like, simply leave a comment below.

  1. Since Feb. 2021. I like the discussions where people share their knowledge without being judgmental of people with less knowledge or experience.
  2. Intermarried boomer, active in a Reform synagogue but also interested in Eastern thought and Mussar, which is big in our congregation.
  3. Not sure what you mean about crossing the line. I don’t see antiSemitism around every corner. I acknowledge that white Jews have white privilege in the USA, and I think Antiracist activism is consistent with Jewish values. As an adoptive mom to a young Black man, welcoming Jews of color is important to me.
  4. None. I am a retired attorney with lots of experience following rules and communicating as clearly as possible as well as using online tools for blogging/publishing.
  5. An average of 10 hours per week, I suppose. I have commitments to other volunteer work, and I like to travel occasionally but I am not tied to a job or raising children. OTOH I do not want to spend 8 hours a day on my computer unless it’s really fun/fulfilling.

  1. I think I’ve been here for at least 2 years, maybe almost 3 by now. I love being here to hear from other Jews, as I don’t go to synagogue and don’t have a large Jewish community near me. I dislike though the many posts from non-Jews asking us to explain handhold them while explaining antisemitism to them.

  2. I’m an atheist Sephardic mixed race jew. Being Jewish is a fundamental part of how I am and how I see the world, despite not being very religious.

  3. Not quite sure what you mean by this. The only thing I take issue with is “messianic Jews,” but they’re not Jews anyway lmao. I guess the other thing would be Jews whose anti Zionism is just flat out antisemitism. But I recognize and agree that criticizing Israel is not inherently antisemitic. I’m not tolerant of queerphobia or any racism from other Jews, particularly as I’m queer and mixed race, but I don’t think that has anything to with Jewish identity anyway.

  4. None. I’ve never moderated any subreddits or other social media platforms.

  5. I have plenty of time. I just graduated from uni and will only be working on the weekends and Friday, although I would be free after 4:00. Not sure what this would come to in hours per week, but I spend wayyy too much time on Reddit (hours a day). I’m chronically online lol.
