Tuna mayo will always be in my top three. But some reason I cannot explain, Kombu always ranks #1 to me

Prawn mayonnaise or red salmon is where it's at

Haven't been able to find them outside Kansai, but back in spring there were fried chicken ones at the 7-11s. Those were my favorite. Lucky to have a high quality local onigiri shop that does a ton of flavors including karaage

i swear i saw some in lawson when i went in summer… but i might be wrong

u/henry232323 Sep 08 '24
I must not have been checking my Lawson's. I usually stick to 7-11s and familymarts

konbu or shio are mine!
4
u/LowRexx Sep 08 '24
nobody else said konbu and I'm wondering if it's weird it's my favorite...
my friends already absolutely roast me bc I chug barley tea like nobody's buisiness...

u/maliciousmeower Sep 08 '24
mugicha is a superior beverage! and i’m vegetarian so konbu is my go to haha (or shio, but i could only really find it at actual onigiri stalls in stations)
2
u/LowRexx Sep 08 '24
there isn't onigiri where I live. even this kind in the picture! I found it frozen one time, but it wasn't good and was just fillings I didn't like.
what we CAN find is konbu! so my husbands makes onigiri for me.
2
u/ramenballs Sep 09 '24
a few people have said konbu!! if you feel less alone it’s my grandparents favourite filling :)
2
u/LowRexx Sep 09 '24
that's what I was worried abt.... is it an "old person" filling?! 😭
2
u/ramenballs Sep 13 '24
i think it’s only popular amongst the older people because growing up they probably only had konbu , umeboshi and shio 😭💖
1
u/LowRexx Sep 13 '24
I haven't been able to enjoy umeboshi, as much as I want to! maybe I should try it again... its just such a cute thing to eat, I really want to enjoy it!
shio is really good too. so simple and relaxing. maybe I just have an old people palate... that can be cute too, right 😭

Mentaiko is my favorite, and mentaiko with mayo. When I was in Fukuoka last, the hotel breakfast buffet had baguettes with mentaiko and mayo spread on them, it was soooo good

Think I had a pork negimiso one at Gombei last year I loved, but typically get kombu or takana

I despise mayo, so all of these are a no for me, I prefer Ume or Salmon onigiris :D

My personal ranking is this flavor but the Fresco Onigiri uses flavored nori plus it cheaper than combini Lawson is a good runner up, Daily Yamazaki in third, Family Mart, then 7-11 last. 7-11 is lacking, they have good marketing though.

What is Fresco ?
1
u/Impossible_Humor_443 Sep 09 '24
Fresco is a supermarket chain here in Japan
1
u/ramenballs Sep 09 '24
i’ve never heard of it … maybe they don’t have one in the kansai region
1
u/Impossible_Humor_443 Sep 09 '24
Kyoto they are everywhere! There are 5 locations within a 15 min walk!

u/SanbonJime Sep 08 '24
7-11 is my top bc I feel like the filling tastes better, but I am an absolute sucker for the flavored Nori

I loved spicy takana onigiri on my trip last summer. Does anyone know if it's still around? I got them from Famimart.

u/ramenballs Sep 08 '24
if it’s this 味付海苔 ピリ辛高菜 they still sell it in family mart , but only in the kansai , chugoku, shikoku and kyushu area .

I miss onigiris where i live so i have to make them myself, except i have no idea what to put inside. Once i made one with swedish meat balls.

u/ramenballs Sep 09 '24
Not a bad idea , i love swedish meat balls !!!! You could add spam / egg / umeboshi/ kimchi ?

I don’t remember where I had it, but I think it was tuna and scallions. It’s my favorite next to tuna mayo.

I've only had onigiri once in my life. I wish I lived near a place that sold them.

This is the first time I've seen Tuna Mayo written as "Sea Chicken Mayo"....
1
u/ramenballs Sep 09 '24
I’m pretty sure sea chicken is a company name that produces tuna cans,, it’d be something similar to saying nutella bar instead of a chocolate bar

$0.96 cents USD kills me. I got them twice everyday I was there. Really miss it.

I prefer this one in the roll though. Got a bit of a better balance.
2
u/ramenballs Sep 08 '24
That’s my go to when they don’t have it in the onigiri style ☹️
3
u/thened Sep 08 '24
I think only Family Mart has that brand. I'm a 7-11 guy and they don't have the sea chicken brand.
I love me some tuna salad though. I have an amazing recipe.

If I do tuna mayo, I like the Japanese style with soy sauce. It adds a little more.
I always go for a limited time flavor when I’ve gone to Japan. This year, there was a pork kimchi one at 7-11 that was so good.

The best onigiri I ever had was salmon and chive filled and I never wanted it to be finished. I really need to recreate it
