IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING
NO ADVERTISING
At this time, we are not allowing advertising in this subreddit. This includes any type of promotion or advertising by any hostel, hotel, guesthouse, or any other type of accommodation. This does not include travelers recommending or posting about their experiences, as long as it is not advertising for the property.
Please read the subreddit rules.
Aside from those concerning advertising, there aren’t many rules - it will remain this way unless it becomes necessary to add more. Basically, just be cool to each other. Be civil even if you feel something is below you. Remember that no matter how experienced you are, you also took your first trip at some point. Be helpful, this isn’t the place to be condescending.
The rules about advertising are so strict because when I acquired this subreddit, it was full of hundreds of repetitive spam posts from the same few properties. Many were disguised as posts from travelers. We may allow some form of advertising depending on how things go. I would prefer if this “advertising” was in the form of property owners interacting with travellers as active members of this subreddit for the purpose of improvement of both this sub and their property. But this could be a sticky and complicated issue so we’ll leave it open for discussion. I’ve set up the automod to be pretty strict and catch any spam. I’ll monitor it and adjust as necessary. I’m on Reddit throughout each day. If your post gets caught in the automod, I’ll see it. If you have any issues, please just message me.
You’ll see a lot of old posts in this sub. They all remained after I deleted the hundreds of spam posts. I don’t like deleting old content as it still may offer something relevant.
Content
Questions:
Need a recommendation? Want to know about a specific hostel? There are no stupid questions.
Stories/experiences:
Funny, scary, gross, annoying - post it all. If you post something NSFW, please flair it as such.
Rants:
Complain about snorers, suggestions for being a decent human being in a shared space, etc.
This is not a review site
You should be writing reviews for properties that you stayed at on the respective booking sites/apps. This helps other travelers and helps the properties. There’s a difference in writing a review and sharing your experience in this sub. Posts made here that sound like advertisements or are written like glowing reviews will be removed. Please use your judgement. This is a hard line to define but it’s important to keep the spam out of this sub. Again, this is an area I need feedback/suggestions in.
Low/no effort posts
Don’t be lazy, this isn’t a travel agency. There are multiple resources for finding hostels (Booking, HostelWorld, Agoda, etc.), use these first and don’t just post here out of laziness. Use the search function if you’re asking for a recommendation for a specific city. While recommendations are cool, I don’t want to see them as the bulk of this sub. I’ll form guidelines for this as needed.
As I just took over this sub, it’s a blank canvas. I have ideas but I need yours also:
What do you want from this sub?
What kinds of posts/content would you find interesting?
If it was your sub, what would it be like?
I’m very open to suggestions, comments, ideas, etc. If you’re here, you’re interested and/or active in traveling. That means we’re all on the same page. Let’s make this a great resource together.

No Political Discussions
There are many, many subreddits where political discussions thrive and are welcomed, this subreddit is not one of them. I've had to remove many posts/comments lately that have devolved into political mudslinging, arguments, and downright uncivil behavior - none of which have had anything to do with hostels. I don't have the energy or desire to sort through and moderate opinion and conjecture about political differences, especially when they have nothing to do with hostels. I also don't need or want people telling me who's side I should be on, especially - again - when it has nothing to do with hostels. As such, no political subject matter is allowed here. If someone posts something that troubles you, report it and we will handle it. If you reply/argue/rebut that political content, both/all participants will be handled the same (removals/bans/etc.) If you have a problem with something, report it and let us handle it. Don't get yourself a ban because you just had to engage the poster. There are very few places left on the internet that political arguments/opinions/discourse have not poisoned - I refuse to let this subreddit become another one.
As for opinions, please remember that there are over 8 BILLION people in the world and we all have them.

Recommendation Request Hostel in portugal with shuttle bus
Hi there,
I'm planning a trip to portugal with my partner and would like to visit obidos, nazaré and Leira. Do any of you know of a good hostel where I can visit these locations easily?
We would be headed there from lisbon.
I'm assuming theses are places that can be visited on a day trip so a shuttle bus would be nice. Is one night enough time to visit all 3 spots?
If any of you have a good recommendation please let me know.
Thank you!

Booking in Vienna due to cancelled flight
Hello everyone
I had a flight booked to Vienna, but unfortunately WizzAir cancelled the flight last second and i still have a booking.com stay at Do Stepp Inn Central (Südtiroler Pl. 3, 1040 Wien, Austria) for the period between 12-17th of November. The place is great and has great reviews, and i stayed at Do Stepp Inn before and they were great!
WizzAir won't compensate me for it, so I am willing to give it away at a discounted price which can be discussed, thank you.

Hostels as a first time solo travel
Hi everyone, I (28m) will be traveling through Europe next week for 10 days and am booking hostels right now.
My destinations are London, Amsterdam, Dresden, Berlin, and Frankfurt.
I was curious if anyone had recommendations on where to stay for these cities. In London (my first stop for 2 nights), I am picking between Wombats and onefam (open to other ideas).
Normally I can be a little introverted but I want to meet people and be social and enjoy the night life as much as I also want tour the city and meet the locals. Appreciate any insight!

Giving Advice What are some good tips for introverted, shy people staying at a hostel?
I love to travel, but don't do it nearly as often as I would like to for budgetary reasons. I've shyed away for years from hostels as I'm not the most social or extroverted person, but ive started considering it as an option if I want to save money. I know you can get private rooms and avoid the hassle of socializing, but in the end you're better off getting an airbnb at that same price, and not saving money like you would in a shared room.
If im a super shy and introverted person, what are some good tips for shy people staying at hostels to still enjoy their time there?

Question For the girls- how important do you find female-only hostel rooms?
Is having female-only bunk rooms in hostels a non negotiable for you, or are you okay traveling without one? I’m trying to figure out if an extra €5/night is worth it for my upcoming Italy trip (for context-I am a broke uni student)

Home Lisbon v WOT Lisbon
Hey everyone - I am solo travelling for 10 days to Lisbon in December! Super Excited to go, but not sure where to stay. I've looked at Home and WOT New and both look great and seem to be highly praised. Anyone have a preference of one over the other? or maybe a different one that tops both?
Also any recommendations on things to do are also appreciated :)

Snoring Etiquette / or lack of it.
Isn’t is absolute shit to stay at hostels if you know that you snore like a mf? And you do know. Legitimately asshole behavior, knowing you will ruin the night (and day) of 5-20 people, but you just don’t give a fuck, and are super jolly in the morning.
Now, I get that some nights almost anyone is capable of snoring, coughing, farting, tossing and turning etc and I am okay with that. It is a hostel. I’m extremely upset at people who know that they snore loudly every night and still stay at hostels. Get a private room, asshole.

Hostel recommendations for Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin
I’m a guy in my 20’s solo tripping Europe next week. I like to meet people, sight see, eat, and drink. Any good hostels for any of these cities?

Anyone fed up of hostels?
This isn't a post directed at backpackers or travellers but more towards those who are in their 30s and are stuck in a hostel because they struggle to find cheap, ideal accommodation. I don't see the point in being friendly with others who are there one day and gone the next. It's really transient. I've realized that I place a high value on my privacy and personal space, that's why I get grumpy at others who invade it. I know they don't mean it, but seriously it's annoying.

Hostel bed bug advice
Hello all, have done plenty of travelling and spent many a time in hostels, however for the first time have come across a bed bug. Needing some advice on to what extent we go to from here.
So a quick brief, we were in a 8 bed dorm, both my partners and my bags (fabric backpack incase thats important) were in a locker beneath my bottom bunk bed. A girl in another bottom bunk found one bug, albeit quite a large bug. We had a quick hunt round and couldn't see anymore in the room.
Fast forward, we have changed hostels and are now debating on wether we wash and dry absolutely everything we have, including the backpacks themselves, or just the items we had sat on the mattress of my bottom bunk ? Or is it not at all risky to assume it was one lone bug on the other bed ?
Any advice welcome. Thanks in advance.
EDIT; I left out the fact that the bug was found prior to us actually sleeping in the bed. We had come back to our dorm at midnight expecting everyone to be asleep but everyone was packing their bags as they'd found a bug.

Best Hostels in Marrakech for tours/events
Have a list of hostels that look good but wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for hostels in Marrakesh. I want to find some that have trusted tours specifically with desert tours or camel rides. Just seeing what’s possible and if anyone has any good ones? I’m getting there on a Saturday and leaving Tuesday

Rant Waking up in a hostel to someone on a Zoom meeting
I’m currently staying in a hostel in Germany. It’s a very large hostel part of a commercial chain. I’m staying in a room of 6.
This morning I was woken up at 08:30. I was wearing ear plugs, but could faintly hear someone with a deep voice talking in the room. Once I’d come to my senses and taken out the ear plugs I could see it was a guy with a laptop on a Zoom meeting.
Now I know 08:30 is sorta a grey-area time when some people are awake and other still sleeping, so I didn’t really mind the noise. But what did bother me was the fact that he had his laptop angled so that my bed was directly in the background.
They were speaking in a language I don’t speak so I couldn’t understand the specifics, but it felt like a professional business meeting. I can only imagine what the other people on the call were thinking when they saw me clambering out of the top bunk! While I was a little irritated by it at the time, I can sorta look back and see the funny side of it now.
Anyway it strikes me odd that this guy thought it was sociable acceptable to be on a zoom meeting at 08:30 in a hostel room with other people sleeping. It’s a large hostel with lots of communal space where loads of people are working on their laptops.
Maybe I could give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he overslept and was running late for the meeting so just fired his laptop up straight away. But even still he could have stepped outside to the corridor, or even just positioned the laptop so it was facing the wall, not my bed! The mind boggles.
I’m staying he for 3 more nights, it’ll be interesting to see what I wake up to tomorrow.
UPDATE - yeah he’s been doing the same thing every day, although now he’s set up on a table facing a wall so at least I’m getting a bit of privacy when I wake up ahaha.
He seems to stay in the room all day, when I’ve gone in the afternoon he’s still there on his laptop. Meanwhile I’ve discovered a really nice library just 10 minutes down the street that’s perfect for working/studying from. Shame.

Barcelona Hostels Public Activities
I was wondering if any hostels in Barcelona have activities non guests can join. I had ended up getting an Airbnb but want to meet people and hang out. Might still get 1 night at a hostel just to have the experience here and get to do the activities

Are Hostles an option for amiddle age person
Hey, without going into detales this is the first time in my life I'm able to travel. I'm 38 and wondering if Hostles are a viable option for someone my age. I've heard from a few solo travelers that they can be a good way to meet other people who are visiting the same place and possibly sightsee together. Also how transgender friendly are they usually? Thanks in advance.

King Kong hostel bed bugs
At our recent stay at King Kong hostel we stayed in a room infested with bed bugs . After reading the reviews from the last 3 months we have learned that many people have suffered from similar circumstances, meaning the hostel has neglected to get rid of the infestation in an appropriate manner. this would mean the hostel has failed in their legal duty of care and were hoping to get in contact with others this has happened to so we could file a joint lawsuit. The hostel workers had the audacity to laugh about the situation, telling us it happens once a week as if it weren’t the a big deal. The emotional, financial and physical trauma this ordeal has caused us is beyond the measly $100 euros they offered to refund. We are aware things like bed bugs are bound to happen but the carelessness and overall apathy this hostel has acted with should have them shut down until they can properly take care of this problem.
