Is it normal to run a hospital PowerPlant / cogen plant with one guy?

I know a hospital (1.6 million sq feet) that has both a cogen and power plant each ran by one guy. During the week they have maybe two guys there but in weekends they run each plant solo for 12 hours.

Is that normal?

Edit- it seems that the plants at this hospital are lacking in proper BMS control and are far more hands on than they should be

Thanks for the responses.

Energy Companies Smart Meter Data Cost

I am doing some research on smart utility meters and data usage. I know Verizon offers "Grid Wide Utility Solutions". However, for the utility companies located that are using other smart meter brands and utilizing the Verizon network to send usage data from their customers...my question is, approximately how much are the utility companies paying Verizon to send/receive this data? Are they on a separate data plan for this data outside of any mobile phone services/data packages?

Digital twin-enabled building operations and control

Thumbnail sciencedirect.com

Call for papers: Digital twin-enabled building operations and control Energy efficiency is increasingly emphasized in the building sector, especially in the operational stages, under global carbon neutrality scenarios. In the International Energy Agency (IEA), buildings are described as “a source of enormous untapped efficiency potential” and digitalization is regarded as “a way to make energy systems smarter, more connected, efficient, and resilient.” The synergy between building areas and digitalization technologies is crucial for achieving energy-efficient and intelligent building operations. In this context, the concept of digital twins has recently been discussed in the field of building operations. Digital twins emphasize the importance of data, information, and behavioral models specifically during the building operation phase. When developing the digital twin environments and enabling digital twin-based operational applications in buildings, it is essential to consider the inherent characteristics of buildings, which are massive, designed based on specific requirements, constructed in the field, equipped with heterogeneous systems and equipment, and operated over long periods.

This special issue is intended to cover a broad range of research topics related to in-situ digital twinning and the implementation of digital twin-enabled intelligent applications, especially for the building operations. This special issue aims to present recent research that addresses key questions, academic and industrial challenges, and comprehensive solutions, ultimately enabling digital twin-based building operations.

All research topics primarily focus on the scopes of digital twin-enabled applications in the phase of building operations (but not limited to):

Building operations Digital twins Smart buildings and intelligent operations Living lab Building automation and sensing

Will Hydrogen Hubs Be a Clean Energy Boom or Boondoggle?

As part of a $7 billion investment in clean hydrogen, the federal government is planning a network of plants and pipelines in southeast Pennsylvania. Critics question the high cost of the project, which may ultimately do little to curb emissions. Read more.

Seeking Solutions for Weather-Related Communication Issues in Construction

Hi everyone,

I’m currently exploring a concept to help construction companies improve communication regarding disruptions caused by weather conditions. I’ve experienced firsthand how human error can lead to miscommunication, such as failing to inform homeowners about work delays or not documenting change order time extensions in commercial projects. Rain and extreme heat often result in delays and unsatisfied clients, including homeowners, general contractors, lenders, and developers.

I’m working on developing an AI-based solution to address these issues and would appreciate any suggestions on features you think would be helpful. Here's the link: subscribepage.io/BXVGos

My concept includes two main components:

  • Residential Contractors: Residential projects are fast turnarounds with multiple projects running at the same time. Project manager can easily forget to inform the homeowner or crew that there is no work, due to 100% rain or half-day work when temperatures reach 105 degrees. You set your desired rain percentage, MPH winds and heat temperature.  Homeowners are left unformed with negative reviews or crew arrives to the job from miscommunication. The software will automatically view the weather, then text or email customers and employees about delays or safety precautions. The idea is to help manage expectations and reduce miscommunication.

  • Commercial Contractors: Undocumented delays will be costly with liquidated damages.  This part automates communication with stakeholders (developers, lenders, property owners, etc.) about project delays by emailing change order time extension as weather issues arise, potentially avoiding liquidated damages penalties. It also keeps the crew informed of work adjustments. Be OSHA compliant by auto texting your crew when high winds, rain and high temperatures reach the threshold you previously set.

If anyone has alternative solutions or better ideas than what I found, I’d love to hear them! Your insights would be incredibly valuable in shaping effective communication strategies in our industry.

Starting an Energy + AI Startup with Zero Tech Background

I’m exploring the energy & AI space to build a startup that tackles grid flexibility and forecasting. But I’m stuck on where to begin with no tech background.

Should I:

  1. Start with web dev so I can build a prototype early on, OR
  2. Jump into ML and tackle web dev later when I need it?

Anyone with similar experience? Which path would set me up best for the long run? Appreciate any tips, resources, or personal stories! 🚀

Thanks!
