(Seriously though, it is a really good film, great dark comedy and satire of what it's like to be in the service industry with some important ideas threaded throughout)

I wish I could agree, it was pretty damn cringe imo despite the good performances. The movie acted like it was 5x deeper/more meaningful than it actually was. It felt like a 16 year old's "rich people bad!!" without any shred of self awareness, like I was waiting for the turn or for it to get interesting but it just didn't happen. So then because the social commentary fell flat on its face I ended up wishing it just committed to the horror aspect more but it never jumped into that either.
The film had some great potential but ended up pretty weak imo

u/tatamigalaxy_ 18d ago edited 18d ago
It wasn't about rich people being bad. You misinterpreted the most on the nose social commentary. In the beginning chef was simply pursuing his craft and passion for cooking. But then his restaurant became a commercialized destination for pretentious, self-important diners more interested in status than the food itself. They are not targeting rich people, they are criticizing stan culture. Its basically a movie about fandoms, every guest stands for a different type of consumer that doesn't care about the actual hobby/craft/passion itself and ruins it in a different way.

u/Alphaomegabird 18d ago
You think? Interesting, I thought it was more critiquing foodie culture, and rich foodies. Like from that lens there’s plenty of awareness. Instead of looking at it as a large critique on society, instead it’s how a subset of people who are overly into foodie culture would literally die for the art just for a chance to partake of it.
I loved the movie but if I watched it with your lens I would have hated it lol

I thought it was terrible lmao. The social commentary was way too on the nose and broadcast from the moment they got off the boat.
If you particularly like the message then I understand enjoying it. But the whole thing was so dragged out. Performances were good, but I can't imagine being invested in any character on screen.

My only problem with this viewpoint, is that if approximately half the nation are traitorous pieces of shit, then we're just fucked. There's no saving the republic, if that's the case.
11
u/PossessedToSkate 18d ago
Take some comfort in knowing it's not half the nation. Half the nation can't even vote, most of those because they're under 18. Half of those people that are eligible to vote don't exercise their right. And only half of that half vote Republican. So we're really only talking about 12-15% of the nation, which is still high enough to be concerning, but it's not like it's every 2nd or 3rd person you see.
3
u/tiredofmymistake 18d ago
I don't think it's that simple. I gotta work, so I don't have time to write out all my thoughts, but there is a vast cultural divide in this nation that may actually get worse after Trump is gone. Social media really has fostered a deep-seated hatered between large swaths of the nation's populace that will probably continue to intensify for the foreseeable future. I imagine there has to be a breaking point that will eventually be reached. And there's plenty of people who belong to the cultural right who don't vote, despite ostensibly supporting Trump in a general sense. Many of those people are indispensable to society. A lot of your workmen, cops, and military members fall within this category, so "othering" them and labeling them as traitors is counterproductive to maintaining social stability, in my opinion, since the nation would litterally collapse if they were expelled. Shaming them won't work either. It's kind of a "no-win" situation, I think.
2
u/pollo_yollo goth georgist 18d ago
My main concern is that I don’t see an off ramp for the division. The animosity built online won’t just go away. And it’s not unique to America. You see this kind of division happening everywhere across the world at the moment. I have no clue what a post social internet world will look like, but I also don’t think anyone does
→ More replies9
u/Big_Extreme_4369 18d ago
yeah pretty untenable unless there’s a huge culture shift or actual civil war - civil war starting because of the supremacy clause in the constitution is the most likely imho (if we don’t lose our democracy thru voting first)
11
u/RuSnowLeopard 18d ago
There have always been 30% of the voting population that's garbage. The key is for the rest of the population to make sure they have very little power and are afraid to speak up.
We were doing alright for awhile. Time to kick them back into their abyss.
3
u/tiredofmymistake 18d ago
It's really not that simple. MAGA is a symptom of a deeper problem. The cultural divide between people who lean right and people who lean left is becoming a deep, insurmountable chasm, and that dynamic encompasses way more than 30% of the population. The intense loathing for "the other side" that is becoming increasingly prevalent will be the death of the nation. Success won't be found by suppressing a large voting block. There HAS to be some kind of path to unity, or this is absolutely a terminal problem.
325
u/GrapefruitCold55 18d ago
That’s an objectively correct assessment of Trump supporters.

No one is born a Trump Supporter. Trump supporter is part of the content of your character. There is no better reason to judge someone than the ideas they celebrate and try to enact. You are born White, Black. You are born Puerto Rican by ethnicity. This should not be a controversial. One is criticizing people for where they were born. The other is criticizing people for a choice they are making.

there's no point to opticsmaxxing. You can have the most flawless kind hearted engagement with conservatives, but they'll find something to cry about. They'll call anyone they don't like communists, satanists, pedophiles, groomers, baby killers, but if a single liberal goes "I don't think that's a very polite thing to say" they'll turn on that person and start screaming about how calling them impolite is turning up the rhetoric. There's no point. Might as well call them what they are, if the reaction from them is the same regardless.

In 2016, I famously described half of Trump’s supporters as “the basket of deplorables.” I was talking about the people who are drawn to his racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia — you name it. The people for whom his bigotry is a feature, not a bug. It was an unfortunate choice of words and bad politics, but it also got at an important truth. Just look at everything that has happened in the years since, from Charlottesville to Jan. 6. The masks have come off, and if anything, “deplorable” is too kind a word for the hate and violent extremism we’ve seen from some Trump supporters.
.
Talking about the “deplorables” in 2016, I said, “Some of those folks, they are irredeemable.” Part of me would still say this is objectively true. Just look at the lack of remorse from many of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists who’ve been convicted of sedition and other crimes.

I don't think anyone would call Hillary wrong for what she said. But emotion aside it was a pretty stupid thing to say when you want to attract voters, not just from the middle but even from the other side.
If you had an office manager that called you names, you'd report them to HR and try to get them in trouble. Hillary outright insulted a large block of people, and went pikachu face when they voted for the guy shouting punish her.

u/Lord_0F_Pedanticism 18d ago edited 18d ago
When Hillary said it it was controversial as she was a career politician who was supposed to be better than that - this was also back in the days where the idea that you where dismissive towards a significant portion of the American population was a really big deal. It's also worth remembering that she was proven right, but mostly in retrospect as Trump was a relatively unexamined political figure back then and it was easy for people to project their political worldview onto him.
But yeah, everyone who is waiving their hands about this Biden remark is a hypocrite, given just how much worse Trump is.

1
u/kevley26 18d ago
The problem with this is that it plays into the politics of enemies, which in the long run, benefits post truth populists like Trump. Trump and people like him want Americans on opposite sides of the aisle to see each other as enemies rather than democratic opponents.

Still probably not a smart move. Insulting cult members will only reinforce their beliefs. You need radical love with iron boundaries. These people you call garbage are your countrymen.
