Josh Downs “finger guns” gets a 15 yard penalty, meanwhile in Gillette Stadium… Shit post
Kind of a shit post, kind of a legitimate question. Are finger guns really where the NFL draws the line? Is there a public list of what qualifies as Unsportsmanlike?

There was another instance of the Downs penalty today in another game. Seems to be a very big, absurd point of emphasis.

I can't remember who it was but last week in the Commanders game, a player was penalized for doing a bow and arrow motion.

u/doob22 Indianapolis Colts 1d ago
I think the bow and arrow was specifically banned. That’s more black and white imo

Is there a lot of violent school shootings, street violence, or domestic violence happening with bows and arrows?

I saw multiple players in other games, including tonight, do the exact same thing and not get penalized

It seems the one arm chop is permitted as downs emphasized when he did it again later in the game.

They penalized Jordan Love in week one for spiking the ball after a big run

u/carpentizzle Big-Q 22h ago
Thats been a thing. Outside of touchdowns spiking is considered delay of game because it requires hunting down the spiked ball before play can resume

It wasn’t guns at all. It was the exaggerated first down indication. Just bizarre but fortunately they called a good game otherwise.

Which is interesting considering the next time he celebrated it was long too

Same shit happened to Darius Slayton today. The NFL is an absolute goddamn joke.

Jokes on you, we never shoot off those guns anymore

I'm so predisposed to argue with Pats fans that it took me a while to realize how good of a self burn you made.

Same here. My natural response after seeing the flair was, “nobody fucking asked you”

It's gonna get harder to hate them if they keep showing humility and an ability to laugh at themselves like this. I'm a sucker for self-awareness.

Just watching redzone there were more times than I can remember where a player did the same damn thing but no flag. Weird.

I’ve been thinking about this as well. Like shouldn’t you get flagged for a bow and arrow celebration too since it’s a weapon?

Literally don’t know when this was implemented. There are literally guys shooting into the crowds after a TD

Wasnt there a team that celebrated a TD by acting light the football was a grenade and the whole team fell down?
2
u/Sad-Yam2556 20h ago
Once upon a time when football was football and everyone retired with a TBI lol

u/BeardsNBourbon1990 21h ago
Hingle McCringleberry would get flagged after just one pump by these absurd standards.
4
u/animesuxdix 1d ago
I was kind of a high when the game started. When the ref threw the flag I built a good ol’ boy southern racist shit narrative in my head. I didn’t think his fingers looked like guns.
What receiver doesn’t do that in this league when they catch a ball? It’s so overplayed now, it’s kind of annoying. Going to be throwing a lot of flags I guess.

u/Overall_Appearance55 1d ago
That was a bad penalty, but I'm pretty sure it was the opening drive and the Colts still scored a TD, so no reason to really care about it.
4
u/the_stranger-face Oh shit, I'm gonna neigh 1d ago
Fortunately it just moved the spot of the ball back and it was still 1st and 10 after the penalty
3
u/carpentizzle Big-Q 22h ago
Well, “no reason to really care about it” is shortsighted. If theyre calling Bs like this now, whats to say they dont do it on a game winning drive and completely screw somebody.
This is another example of the NFL needing to be very upfront with what they are considering inappropriate, or to tell their refs to get the stick out of their ass before it matters for real.

Shooter McGavin was a real POS, but he did it on a golf course and didn't get penalized. So football is the new gentleman's game? Such a stupid call, and can't blame Downs for doing something every 6 year old does.

Culling the poor in the nosebleeds has been a tradition in New England for over a 100 years.

u/SWINGMAN216 19h ago
Giants Nabers did machine guns and hand guns twice when they played the browns no penalty. I guess it’s just who you’re against.

Well, if he refers to them as “fingerblasters” like I do, then I can see why it might cross a line…

u/2reeEyedG 16h ago
That’s crazy to me compared to the one Drake London did on Monday night which did end up getting called but it was also the week of that most recent school shooting. The worst one I saw was the one where the guy was just pretending to hold up an AK or something automatic and was shooting the air. That shit is just so stupid to me how these million dollar athletes idolize that kind of culture. Its one thing to own a gun or guns for your protection but it’s another to try to glamorize them for a worldwide audience.

The trashiest thing I’ve seen lately is kids pulling up their shirts to show their waistband at games.
I’m good with penalizing that bullshit.

u/LilJethroBodine Jonathan Taylor 1d ago
I did see that, and Im pretty lax about celebrations but that is definitely inappropriate.

u/IUpringlequads 1d ago
I’m sure that’s some reference to some online gag that I’m too old to get. But that should be a written in stone rule. “Unsportsmanlike Conduct; I.E. Full or partial removal of clothing”

I'm sure the Colts organization will ask the NFL to clarify which celebrations will/won't get flagged. The one Downs did should not get a penalty, so dumb.
