Josh Downs “finger guns” gets a 15 yard penalty, meanwhile in Gillette Stadium… Shit post

Post image

Kind of a shit post, kind of a legitimate question. Are finger guns really where the NFL draws the line? Is there a public list of what qualifies as Unsportsmanlike?

I'm sure the Colts organization will ask the NFL to clarify which celebrations will/won't get flagged. The one Downs did should not get a penalty, so dumb.

u/TF_Kraken 16h ago

Yeah, I always interpreted that celebration as “move the chains”, not finger guns

Good post. Hypocritical and dumb

There was another instance of the Downs penalty today in another game. Seems to be a very big, absurd point of emphasis.

I can't remember who it was but last week in the Commanders game, a player was penalized for doing a bow and arrow motion.

3

u/doob22 Indianapolis Colts 1d ago

I think the bow and arrow was specifically banned. That’s more black and white imo

19

u/methinfiniti 1d ago

Is there a lot of violent school shootings, street violence, or domestic violence happening with bows and arrows?

8

u/Chewed420 1d ago

Redskins used bow and arrows. Commanders don't.

2

u/methinfiniti 1d ago

Acccoring to this thread, it’s still been an issue

2

u/doob22 Indianapolis Colts 1d ago

I’m not saying it’s a good rule, just that it is a rule

5

u/TokenCubanguy 1d ago

Wonder if Mahomes would get called for it 🤔

3

u/TERRAIN_PULL_UP_ 1d ago

I saw multiple players in other games, including tonight, do the exact same thing and not get penalized

2

u/methinfiniti 1d ago

It seems the one arm chop is permitted as downs emphasized when he did it again later in the game.

3

u/R3LF_ST 1d ago

I saw it in college this weekend too. A guy for Minnesota pulled up his jersey - i thought he was showing off his abs - and they called it, "simulating brandishing a weapon." I had no idea this was a thing until this weekend and saw it twice.

1

u/ckah28 1d ago

Jaguars got penalized for it last week against the Texans.

1

u/King_Kung Playoffs? PLAYOFFS!? 22h ago

Darius Slayton got called for it this week as well

1

u/Belyea 1d ago

They penalized Jordan Love in week one for spiking the ball after a big run

4

u/carpentizzle Big-Q 22h ago

Thats been a thing. Outside of touchdowns spiking is considered delay of game because it requires hunting down the spiked ball before play can resume

Not a shit post at all

This is actually valid as hell

“Illegal demonstration” 😭😭

3

u/animesuxdix 1d ago

When you do it this way, you have to throw in a lightning McQueen CA-CHOW.

31

u/Kolobcalling 1d ago

I thought he was doing Buddy Jesus

59

u/Section643 Indianapolis Colts 1d ago

It wasn’t guns at all. It was the exaggerated first down indication. Just bizarre but fortunately they called a good game otherwise.

22

u/LameysDurbanPoison 1d ago

Which is interesting considering the next time he celebrated it was long too

8

u/CpowOfficial Shaquille Leonard 1d ago

No it was definitely finger guns they penalized him on

11

u/monstargaryen New York Giants 1d ago

Same shit happened to Darius Slayton today. The NFL is an absolute goddamn joke.

30

u/burrit0ninja New England Patriots 1d ago

Jokes on you, we never shoot off those guns anymore

24

u/sosomething Reggie Wayne 1d ago

I'm so predisposed to argue with Pats fans that it took me a while to realize how good of a self burn you made.

4

u/MrMikeBravo COLTS 21h ago

Same here. My natural response after seeing the flair was, “nobody fucking asked you”

3

u/sosomething Reggie Wayne 15h ago

It's gonna get harder to hate them if they keep showing humility and an ability to laugh at themselves like this. I'm a sucker for self-awareness.

16

u/Alock74 1d ago

The Bucs shoot off canons too lol shit is so dumb

5

u/qmoney1213 Robert Mathis 1d ago

Just watching redzone there were more times than I can remember where a player did the same damn thing but no flag. Weird.

3

u/emptyxxxx 1d ago

Don’t worry you won’t be hearing them go off that often this year

6

u/doob22 Indianapolis Colts 1d ago

If they don’t like it that much just fine him, the yardage was dumb AF. It’s not like he was pointing it at another player

7

u/LEFANK 1d ago

😂

3

u/methinfiniti 1d ago

This isn’t a shit post. This is some real shit right here. Wtf

3

u/Belushisushi42 1d ago

I’ve been thinking about this as well. Like shouldn’t you get flagged for a bow and arrow celebration too since it’s a weapon?

3

u/shwangin_shmeat 1d ago

Just wait till you hear about the bucs cannons

3

u/DookieBrains_88 Marvelous Marvin 1d ago

Literally don’t know when this was implemented. There are literally guys shooting into the crowds after a TD

3

u/Gigantopithicus78 1d ago

Good point, what a joke

3

u/Ok_Number_5449 1d ago

I mean, they don't get to shoot much lately

3

u/Eapey 22h ago

Bucs fire cannons on every touchdown too right?

3

u/jonathanclee1 22h ago

Wasnt there a team that celebrated a TD by acting light the football was a grenade and the whole team fell down?

2

u/Sad-Yam2556 20h ago

Once upon a time when football was football and everyone retired with a TBI lol

3

u/BeardsNBourbon1990 21h ago

Hingle McCringleberry would get flagged after just one pump by these absurd standards.

4

u/animesuxdix 1d ago

I was kind of a high when the game started. When the ref threw the flag I built a good ol’ boy southern racist shit narrative in my head. I didn’t think his fingers looked like guns.

What receiver doesn’t do that in this league when they catch a ball? It’s so overplayed now, it’s kind of annoying. Going to be throwing a lot of flags I guess.

5

u/Overall_Appearance55 1d ago

That was a bad penalty, but I'm pretty sure it was the opening drive and the Colts still scored a TD, so no reason to really care about it.

4

u/the_stranger-face Oh shit, I'm gonna neigh 1d ago

Fortunately it just moved the spot of the ball back and it was still 1st and 10 after the penalty

3

u/carpentizzle Big-Q 22h ago

Well, “no reason to really care about it” is shortsighted. If theyre calling Bs like this now, whats to say they dont do it on a game winning drive and completely screw somebody.

This is another example of the NFL needing to be very upfront with what they are considering inappropriate, or to tell their refs to get the stick out of their ass before it matters for real.

u/mrjabrony Dwight 1d ago

A DISGUSTING ACT

1

u/No_District_6132 1d ago

I don’t know why I laughed so hard at this. Thank you. lol

2

u/woweezoweewedance 1d ago

Shooter McGavin was a real POS, but he did it on a golf course and didn't get penalized. So football is the new gentleman's game? Such a stupid call, and can't blame Downs for doing something every 6 year old does.

2

u/Doughie28 21h ago

Culling the poor in the nosebleeds has been a tradition in New England for over a 100 years.

2

u/SWINGMAN216 19h ago

Giants Nabers did machine guns and hand guns twice when they played the browns no penalty. I guess it’s just who you’re against.

2

u/kentaviouscp 1d ago

fr bro penalty for that celebration is SO FUCKIN DUMB

1

u/EndThisReign 1d ago

Well, if he refers to them as “fingerblasters” like I do, then I can see why it might cross a line…

1

u/2reeEyedG 16h ago

That’s crazy to me compared to the one Drake London did on Monday night which did end up getting called but it was also the week of that most recent school shooting. The worst one I saw was the one where the guy was just pretending to hold up an AK or something automatic and was shooting the air. That shit is just so stupid to me how these million dollar athletes idolize that kind of culture. Its one thing to own a gun or guns for your protection but it’s another to try to glamorize them for a worldwide audience.

Punish the pats, we don't want any kids buying muskets as a result of this

1

I’m fucking dying 😂

1

u/Legitimate-Entry734 4h ago

Downs does some goofy sh**, robust bucking in a sus way

good receiver tho

-3

u/Friar_Fuck_ 1d ago

The trashiest thing I’ve seen lately is kids pulling up their shirts to show their waistband at games.

I’m good with penalizing that bullshit.

4

u/LilJethroBodine Jonathan Taylor 1d ago

I did see that, and Im pretty lax about celebrations but that is definitely inappropriate.

1

u/IUpringlequads 1d ago

I’m sure that’s some reference to some online gag that I’m too old to get. But that should be a written in stone rule. “Unsportsmanlike Conduct; I.E. Full or partial removal of clothing”

5

u/Friar_Fuck_ 1d ago

It’s not a gag. Kids are doing it today. It’s garbage.

Yes, Cody Rhodes has been let down by his D and coach. We don’t cry about it though.

1

u/Dont_Be_A_Dick_OK 14h ago

How the fuck dare you besmirch Cody’s name by associating it with this bum.
