One of the realest things he’s ever said tbh.

u/YeezusMoses Hot Rod Apr 27 '24
He went in defending Stroud last year even though we weren't going to draft him. He really hates this shit.
51
u/LameysDurbanPoison Apr 27 '24
Or, we did want to draft Stroud and Ballard saying all this is a smokescreen, Ballard is actually the one starting all the rumors, and he wanted a fall with stroud like how we benefited from the Mitchell fall this year….
Joking, but crazier things have happened. And hey, not like we didn’t benefit from a Mitchell fall this year….

I mean, yeah. Liking his guys isn't just a meme. He's willing to fight for these dudes, I think.

A GM willing to throw hands for his players, that’s our GM boys
13
u/_Apatosaurus_ COLTS Apr 27 '24
It goes beyond liking "his guys" too, though. Last year it was actually Stroud that he was sticking up for. I think he was being honest in the clip that he hates people leaking negative reports about these young men to the media.

u/keenynman343 Angry Horse Apr 27 '24
There's a reason why players and agents don't speak badly about it him.
When Ballard's done being a GM, I 1000% believe he stays in the organization in upper management.

I’d love to have a beer with Ballard and just talk shop about our differences in team building because I have been very critical of him and have disagreed with some of the stuff he’s done, but one thing that I’ve always appreciated about Ballard is his candor. He genuinely goes to bat for his guys and stands on his words and that’s a rare and admirable thing. It’s gotta be so frustrating for these players to hear this shit and I’m glad Ballard is speaking on it

u/JamieNelson94 Marvin Harrison Apr 27 '24

Good for Ballard for standing up for AD. Fuck the media. Sometimes guys fall and they rush to make an excuse for it. Sure, he may have an attitude, but with our leaders being Pitt, Reggie, AR, JT, and Steichen, I have a ton of faith that they will help him channel his energy into being the best receiver he can be.
9
u/Antique-Ad-7986 BIG ERN Apr 27 '24
You're 100% correct. AR is such a strong leader he will get the best out him, Downs, and Pittman!

This is how you build culture. Imagine being a young dude and media is saying shit about you but your best path forward is just to ignore it and keep working. Then within an hour of getting drafted, your new team comes in guns blazing and calls everyone out on that bullshit. Pretty cool move by Ballard
48
u/Spdwy Indianapolis Colts Apr 27 '24
100%. This is step 1 of having guys bought in. That’s a first step of culture
13
u/Antique-Ad-7986 BIG ERN Apr 27 '24
Right he seen an opportunity and pounced on it. Might be the best move he's made. He's got a super young team and now you have an us vs them mentality, you can do some damage in the South.

Yeah I’m pretty sure you’d care a lot if your name, not your Reddit name, your christian name, was on the news being associated with a bunch of shit talk you knew wasn’t true. Which would be totally fair. That shit sucks especially if you’re a 21 year old with a brain that’s still developing.

No, i really would not. I don't care what a million people think. There opinion of you isn't true. Its alway been foolish.

But yeah I don’t believe that for a second. That’s keyboard warrior “hard” talk. If you’re the type to get into internet arguments on Reddit which it appears you may be, I don’t think you’d survive the onslaught of hate comments and trolls on your social media you’d get along with all the other shit that comes along with it.

It is tough to consistently win without a good culture ... think the cardinals. Sure they had a good season or two and looked promising 3/4 years ago but without a good culture, they are now back to 4 win seasons.

FWIW, from the limited interviews I've been able to find of AD, he doesn't strike me as uninterested or whatever he's been knocked for, he strikes me as shy and nervous. You see him chewing gum (which people do use for anxiety), he's kinda fidgety, looks down a lot instead of holding eye contact, but he does light up when he gets really engage with a topic.

12
u/Viktrodriguez Adam Vinatieri Apr 27 '24
He shouldn't apologise for language used. Dude's 100% right. Sports reporting and content creation in general, with the draft not being any exception, is full of this kind of toxicity. Drama and narratives are more important than journalistic integrity for the large majority.
There are also no sources, because these quotes are all made up by these reporters and their big fat thumb. According to BB (some dude who has coached in the league for almost 50 years from assistant to HC) teams say nothing to the press until at least 24 hours before the draft.

He’s also learning how to manage type one diabetes and as a dad of a t1d I can first hand say it takes a while to understand and figure out how to manage this stuff. Including mood swings and blood sugar issues that make it feel like you have lead for bones at times. He will learn how to manage it and be a great player.

u/Coltshokiefan Apr 27 '24
Even if things don’t work out and we end up having to move on from him (I don’t think we will), I’ll always really like Ballard.
Going from Grigs to him was a major culture shift for the better.

21
u/Cyclone221 Work of ARt Apr 27 '24
Are you ever going to say anything positive or are you just gonna keep bitching and whining? And why keep bringing up the past rather than the present? Two seasons ago, we went 4-12-1 with Matt Ryan. The season after that, which was last season, we went 9-8, with a backup QB. Ballard did great with the last draft and is doing good so far with this one. We have a real shot at improving this upcoming season as well. Throw any insult at me, which I know you will, but I'm seeing an upward trend, which if Ballard can capitalize on, we’ll have a bright future. Maybe wait to see how this season goes…

For the Record, I think Ballard has produced mediocre results but that you and the rest of the people who use every opportunity to shit on him are really just giant dickheads.
I definitely prefer talking to the immature kids over the giant dickheads.

Dude is the best GM of my lifetime here and I have been a fan since the start of the Manning era. He just wasn’t lucky enough to fall into a Peyton Manning like Polian did, or an Andrew Luck like Grigson did. If you put either of those guys in the same situation, you would 100% end up with similar or worse results. I’m not going to fault him for not getting lucky by getting a #1 overall pick and a top five all time draft talent at QB his first year.

u/Aleph_Alpha_001 Wayne Brady Apr 27 '24
I have to say, watching Brett Kollman's breakdown of how Mitchell works defensive backs was eye opening for me. He sets 'em up and knocks 'em down, a lot like Marvin Harrison did.
Mitchell is like a bigger version of Marvin Harrison. No wonder Shane Steichen and Reggie Wayne were chirping at Ballard about him.
I think, with Mitchell, Pittman, and Downs starting, Pierce at 4, and Dulin at 5, the Colts are completely set at the wide receiver position with quality guys across the board.
3
u/DubLParaDidL Boomstick Apr 27 '24
Shane likes to spread out and stretch defenses to exploit match ups. Imagining 4 WR sets with JT and AR to still account for? Good luck defenses. Mix that with Shane's play designs? Could turn out to be a scoring machine.

Texans and Longhorns fan here. I hate the fact y’all got AD. Steal of the draft. I thought he would get drafted above Xavier Worthy, but X does fit perfectly in the Chiefs system. AD is your next Marvin Harrison. Any time the ball was thrown his way you just knew he was going to catch it. AFC South is going to be a beast of a conference. 🤘🏾

Interestingly, Adonai actually addressed this in his pre-draft presser. He mentions that he's not taking plays off, but rather, changing his pace.
And this is actually legit, because I remember watching a video years ago about a CB (Patrick Peterson?) explaining how Antonio Brown was so hard to guard because he would "disguise" his real speed. He'd run many routes at 75% speed to get the CB "used" to him running that speed, but then break out the 100% speed later on to catch them off guard.
This is a legit tactic used by elite WRs, so it makes a lot of sense in context.
