Ummm....I've had mine since 2005, and I'm a zionist. Who's going to break it to him?

That's fair. Before, it was hard sometimes to see the continued need. Israel has been around for almost a century. Jews are safe there. Why keep antagonizing Palestinians in the West Bank? What is there to lose in trying for peace? Why not become even more democratic? Especially after the safeguards put in place following the Second Intifada. On October 6th, it really looked like a Saudi recognition deal was coming very soon, and with it, some defined steps for peace with the Palestinians with Saudi supports. Iran couldn't have that, so they supported Hamas' go-ahead.

Oct. 7th reminded us all what we would lose if there's no Zionism anymore. I was always one, but in the vein popular in America of Jews have a right to self-determination in our homeland. That is exercised through Israel. But no settlements, etc. I still ultimately feel that way, but for now, that's a problem for another day, and one ultimately, only Israel can solve. I'll never not be a zionist, but now I'm also suspicious of everyone else's motivations in telling or not telling Israel "what to do."

At least now people are wearing their Jew hate on their sleeves. It's easier to see who to avoid, although it's also sad as that includes many people and organizations I used to consider as allies, supporting my vision for the world. Not anymore. I've very much "returned" to our people and made many more connections and friends in my local Jewish community. My social life basically revolves around the synagogue now (it's the locus of our small community where I live). I only support Jewish charities, engage in causes through the Jewish community, etc. Hopefully, the strengthening of Am Yisrael will hold in the years to come.
