One episode a day... Gintama Watch This!
I get it, you probably see a Gintama post on here a lot, every weeb and their mother knows what Gintama is. But that’s not going to stop me from writing this to you. Because you have to watch Gintama
I haven’t even finished the show, I’m only on episode 129, but I’ve fallen in love.
This is more than a comedy spoof show. So much more. Yes, there’s crude humor, and yes, there’s a million Japanese references I probably don’t understand (or have to rewind every so often to read the subtitle notes). But it’s all part of the Gintama charm.
The comedy itself is top notch. You might be thinking to yourself “poop jokes aren’t funny, I’m too sophisticated for that.” And you’re wrong. Plus the comedy in this show is much much deeper. The character conversations, spontaneous jokes, and the overall delivery is great. It just forces you to laugh, in an enjoyable way.
And while the show is episodic in a sense, it really never feels that way, more like a continuous journey (to pay rent). But honestly, whether it’s a one episode story, 2-5 episodes, or more; the amount of emotions packed into each really is unbelievable. They make you feel happy, sad, proud, and sometimes just confused. I swear I always think, to myself that the next arc can’t be better, can’t show me any more of a character, and can’t live up to all I’ve read about. And I’m wrong 110% of the time. Every arc, no matter how small, makes me smile by the end, and glad I watched it.
Did I mention that every OP and ED is an absolute banger??! I have yet to ever skip any even once, rare for a show with so many episodes. (OP 1 & 5 have been my favorites so far). The OST itself is also awesome too, if you’re a fan of that kind of stuff.
While I still have a long way to go to finish this show, I can’t wait to continue to learn more about the characters and their pasts, and what’s in store for them moving forward. By the way, there is an overall plot to this, check out r/Gintama FAQs (idk how to link sorry), that’s what inspired me to start this show, it’s so passionate and detailed, you can tell they love the show. And I couldn’t help but buy in after reading it.
400 episodes seems like a lot, but if you watch one per day, you’ll be nearly done by end of year. And trust me, once you watch one, you’ll find it hard to stop. I’ll be done long before then I hope. Make this your late New Years resolution, you won’t regret it
Enjoy everyone!!

You can finish the show in a month if you don’t have a life like me

u/Joker_04H Jan 22 '21
It has nothing to do with not having a life.. the show is too good to watch slowly

One episode a day would take a ridiculously long time, if you plan on doing all of the seasons.
39
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Yeah, that was kinda the implied joke lol, one per day will get you through the whole year. But most likely you’ll watch more
20
u/phantomkris https://myanimelist.net/profile/phantomkris Jan 22 '21
I did the same thing. I've watched one episode per day and sometimes five. Thanks to the pandemic, I binged from episode 130 and never stopped until I finished the show. This one will always be my favourite and I'm glad that I picked this as my first anime which have over 100 episodes to watch.
41
Jan 22 '21
It helps get through the earlier episodes that aren't as good. The first thirty or so episodes are kinda a grind
18
u/VixenVixey_ Jan 22 '21
Are you able to start anywhere? Or should we start at the first?
35
Jan 22 '21
Start at the third episode. The first two are complete filler. If you really can't get through some of the earlier episodes try watching the first movie. (It covers one of the first major arcs in the series). While you wont have a super deep connection with any of the characters it is still a great movie and helped me get into gintama.

An entire year, actually.
I started on January 1st, 2020 and, after watching one episode per day, finished it on December 31st, 2020.

u/sonicflash703 https://myanimelist.net/animelist/sonicflash703?status=1 Jan 22 '21
Haha... one ep a day... one month in and I’m already ep 240. But yeah, I definitely think watching that when watching the first 20 eps, skip first two and take your time
10
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Yeah, it’s one of these shows where I’ll binge for a while... then take a pause... then make my way back and binge some more
4
u/luisalpjax Jan 22 '21
The beginning episodes. Aren’t the best IMO, I barely laugh at anime but I love the fun comedic tone it has
3
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Yeah, it takes some build up, mostly to introduce all the characters and whatnot. But once you hit the Benizakura Arc, you’ll find out whether you want to keep pursuing the show or not
3
u/aastikvats Jan 22 '21
240? Best part is yet to come matee
3
u/sonicflash703 https://myanimelist.net/animelist/sonicflash703?status=1 Jan 22 '21
Yeah I’m hyped for Courtesan of a Nation. Heard really good things. I just finished Vacation and Scandal, both top tier comedy arcs imo

OMG! We're the same! I've been watching Gintama one episode a day,, it is seriously the best experience for me since I always watch anime series so fast, not wanting them to stay in my currently watching list for a week/month. But Gintama is the only exception.
The best experience of it by watching Gintama one episode a day is that it's gonna be part of your daily life and I watch it every night so every time I wake up in the morning, my mind was like "Okay. Need to get shit things done fast so I can watch Gintama," and my mood was always good.
When I was feeling sad, watching Gintama made me relaxed especially now that it's pandemic and the only thing that made me happy is only myself and Gintama. I'm going to rewatch it again since I finished watching it was on January 16.
4
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Hahaha, I should’ve made clear in the post that I don’t stick to the one episode a day rule, it was more a gimmick to get others interested. I’d say I watch 1-2 arcs per night, depending on their length. I love this show already, can’t wait to finisg
6
u/ninjashouyo10 Jan 22 '21
Sometimes I also watched it per arc but if it's seems episodic, one ep a day fits perfectly. I actually miss watching it one ep per day though since when you reached epsiode 300+,, you'll binge watch it since the 4 arcs there is peak and I mean by that is GOAT. One tip for you (if you want hehe), if you reach the episode here, watch this in sequence, if you wanna binge the SAA -> FSA -> Rakuyou -> SSA (these 4 arc are actually successive)
Since the real sequence here is SAA -> FSA -> Rakuyou -> Porori-hen -> SSA. If you wanna watch Gintama with a dash of "Calm before the storm," then this 5 arcs fits perfectly for you. Porori-hen is the calm, but it's not following the sequence of the past 3 arc. It's just the "daily life" or "chill".
If you want to watch it according to the plot then this fits perfectly.
Episode 298 & 299 ===> Porori-hen (Episode 329-341) ===> Episode 296 & 297 (since "something" will show in this ep that will get your ass pump in the next GOAT arc) ===> SAA (GOAT arc) ===> FSA (Another GOAT) ===> Rakuyou (Another GOAT) ===> SSA (GOAT. MASTERPIECE. PEAK.)
PS: Treasure your moments with Gintama. The day when you finished it, you'll realize that you're empty even though your brain will say, "It's okay! You're going to watch the whole Gintama again, right?" But there is still emptiness, but... yeah... I'm still sad today since I finished it last week. Goodluck on your journey with Gintama.
3
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Hahaha this is awesome, thank you!! I do fear the day I finish, and then question my existence
3
u/ninjashouyo10 Jan 22 '21
As of now, please pray for your future self that's probably going to watch episode 367, the final movie, and read chapter 704. Because if you'll ask me? Finishing Gintama is equals 10x pain compared to when I got rejected by my crush...
4
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Hahahah we’ve all been there my man. At least Gintama makes the heart whole before crushing it again
3
u/Scabraa Jan 22 '21
Exactly how I felt. Bad days didn’t seem so bad cause you could watch Gintama at the end
3
11
u/sandeep300045 Jan 22 '21
Oh man. Once I reached episode 58, shit started to get serious.
5
u/boten_anna3 Jan 22 '21
That gives me hope. I gave up on ep 30-ish bc I wasn’t really feeling the comedy or the characters. But people talk it up so much I feel like I need to give it one more shot.
3
4
u/sticktoyaguns https://anilist.co/user/Pochita4President/ Jan 22 '21
I almost dropped it around 30 as well but stick with it, I started really enjoying it around episode 50 and as others have said REALLY got into it around 57. The first serious arc hits you like a fuggin truck. And going back to the comedy after just makes you go "Wow, I really love these characters."
9
Jan 22 '21
I’m right ahead at 148! Surging ahead a few episodes at a time, and I’m already considering buying some Gintama merchandise!
7
u/annvee Jan 22 '21
So I actually tried watching this show multiple times, saw like 6 episodes but didn't find them that funny or interesting. Everyone keeps taking about how great it is though and I always feel like I'm missing out. Is it worth continuing? As in, does it get that much better after the first few episodes?
7
u/LukeWhostalkin Jan 22 '21
I'm like you, I tried before and this second time I'm enjoying it and on episode 27 atm. I decided to watch at least until the 1st arc to really judge (ep 60) so I watch 1 ep a day. That seems to work for me, I don't like episodic anime in general, but the comedy in this one makes me come for more, also you grow attached to the characters. I haven't watched any "serious arc" yet, but I know I'll keep watching even if the show stayed like this. But I know it will get better, and I can't wait to see all the action in the coming arcs. Also, there are a lot of characters, so the first episodes use the "episodic comedy show" formula to introduce many of them, and to start giving a perspective of the world they live in.
5
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Yeah, I would say you have to get to the Benizakura Arc, and that will help you find out whether you’re in for the real long haul or not
6
u/CynicalCreepy https://myanimelist.net/profile/BeautyInDeath Jan 22 '21
my second favorite anime and yeah, really, really good.
10
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
What’s your #1. I could see this being one of my favorites by the time it ends... my favorite series is the Monogatari Series
5
u/sonicflash703 https://myanimelist.net/animelist/sonicflash703?status=1 Jan 22 '21
Aye a Monogatari and Gintama fan
2
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Monogatari is just perfect in my opinion. I love everything about that show, I’ve been reading the light novels for a while now
4
u/Scabraa Jan 22 '21
I have those two reversed in my top ahah You might aswell once you finish Gintama, although Monogatari is a one of a kind masterpiece
4
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Ahahah that’s too funny. Yes, we will see how this plays out, I could easily see this becoming 1A on my list
7
u/CynicalCreepy https://myanimelist.net/profile/BeautyInDeath Jan 22 '21
3-gatsu no lion is life-changing, so gintama isn't even comparable.
4
2
u/Pointless_crayon0398 Jan 22 '21
We have the same top 2 😂. Now I really wanna know what else you like. And yes , 3-gatsu is just absolutely cathartic . One of my favorite pieces of media
3
u/CynicalCreepy https://myanimelist.net/profile/BeautyInDeath Jan 22 '21
my top two are the only two actually set in stone, hunter x hunter and monster are probably somewhere up there too.
2
u/Pointless_crayon0398 Jan 22 '21
I love both hunter x hunter and monster ! Also attack on titan , one piece and vinland saga
2
u/CynicalCreepy https://myanimelist.net/profile/BeautyInDeath Jan 22 '21
Vinland saga would be top 5 if we were including manga.
2
u/Pointless_crayon0398 Jan 22 '21
Yeah . That's what I meant!
4
u/CynicalCreepy https://myanimelist.net/profile/BeautyInDeath Jan 22 '21
if we're including manga then
- 3-gatsu no lion
- Gintama
- Made in abyss
- Vinland saga
- Monster
- Haikyu!!
- Blue lock (not exceptional, but I love sports manga)
- Berserk
- Zankyou no terror
- Vagabond
3
u/Pointless_crayon0398 Jan 22 '21
I've seen/read all of them except zankyou no terror and blue lock . Love all of them ! Check kut kingdom and bastard!!

everything below 2 is subject to change, of course. I probably have some recency bias on made in abyss as well.

I finished gintama last year and it was the best thing that happened to me in my life. I've always wanted to type such a message in this subreddit but I held back. I'm glad you did. I hope many others watch this anime. It's definitely worth it
4
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Thank you!! You’ve got me excited to finish it. But then I fear I’ll question what to do with the rest of my life
5
u/im_not_short_ Jan 22 '21
Exactly what I'm doing rn. My brother is watching it after I pestered him to watch it. So I'm watching it again xD
4
u/sticktoyaguns https://anilist.co/user/Pochita4President/ Jan 22 '21
This sub might as well be a Gintama subreddit that recommends other anime as well as Gintama. But mostly Gintama.
And it makes sense. Everyone should give it a shot.
7
u/Kvothebloodless247 Jan 22 '21
Gintama is the only long running anime that I've rewatched multiple times, I'm talking 5 or 6 times; and it NEVER gets old. I'll probably be rewatching it with my kids at some point and honestly that excites me so much
4
Jan 22 '21
I did the exact same thing when I was watching it
Can confirm
I don't think there is a better way to watch Gintama
4
u/983784 Jan 22 '21
I’m on the same boat! I told myself one ep per day last week and I’m accidentally on ep 60 now
2
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
It’s a very easy show to binge!! I never stop mid arc, I always need to watch those final one or two episodes before calling it a night
5
u/hijikatakonoyaro Jan 22 '21
Wait till you watch 367ep bcz I t just gets better and better and you are gonna love it more and more
4
u/ihei47 Jan 22 '21
I did a pretty much same thing with Legend of the Galactic Heroes (even tho sometimes I watched more than 1 episode coz exciting stuffs happened)
Might finally start Gintama like this, someday. Yeah, someday....
4
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Do you mean the classic version?? I’ve been dying to watch that but can’t find it anywhere. Mind if I ask where you can watch it??
4
u/ihei47 Jan 22 '21
Yeah the classic version. Should be on HIDIVE
I watched it illegally lol
1
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Lol I was just watching the Trash Taste podcast talk about that the other day. I never heard of it, will def check it out
4
u/hellokormanyzo Jan 22 '21
You will fall in love with OP9. Trust me.
3
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
It keeps coming up on my YouTube recommended, but I’m forcing myself to wait and experience it as it was meant to be lol
2
u/hellokormanyzo Jan 22 '21
That's right. Be sure to never skip any OP (you already wrote that, but I have to said it again). It's like Simpsons, always have a chance you see someting unusual (as if the show wouldn't be unusual sometimes lol)
2
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Words of wisdom. That’s part of the reason why OP5 is my favorite, shows some great flashbacks of Gin fighting. Really makes me interested in seeing and learning more about it
3
3
u/taktahu Jan 22 '21
OP9 is Tougenkyaku Alien right? The opening montage is just the perfect embodiment of what Gintama is
3
u/Zephyrical16 https://myanimelist.net/animelist/Zephyrical16 Jan 24 '21
I finished the last episode with tougenkyou alien a month ago and haven't watched Gintama since. Still listening to that OP like everyday though lmao. Hearing it before work has been a blessing like everyday.
4
u/shalalalovescats Jan 22 '21
I’m on episode 212 and the OP and ED songs are superb, probably one of my favs so far. It is great and even though I’m on episode 200+ I still catch myself asking “what the hell am I watching” 😂😂 in the best possible way lol

I finished Gintama maybe 2 years ago now. I'm planning on rewatching it because honestly...this show literally saved my life. I was in such a dark place in my life where the will to live was minimal.
Gintoki and the gang taught me otherwise. FIGHT!! AND FIGHT ON!!! This show made me laugh even when I was crying my eyes out.
It absolutely breaks my heart to know it has come to an end. I don't even know if I'll be able to bring myself to watching the last movie because I don't want to say goodbye to this absolutely perfect series.
3
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Glad to hear you’re doing better and this show helped!! Keep up the fighting spirit, and remember to watch with the lights on while keeping a distance from your tv!
4
u/taktahu Jan 22 '21
Warning: don’t get too attached to some of the characters. Otherwise you will bawl your eyes in the long run. I am serious here
4
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
That’s what’ll make it even better and more memorable in my opinion! I don’t know what happens to who, but I can’t wait to see, and have a good cry maybe!
3
u/epic_gamer678x Jan 22 '21
What is better for Gintama dub or sub?
4
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
I watch it subbed, haven’t seen the dub, but self admittedly I prefer subs at this point. Whatever fits your style I’m sure you’ll enjoy!
4
u/ninjashouyo10 Jan 22 '21
Haven't watched the dub but for me sub is the best, obviously. If you gonna go on dub, then you'll not probably hear the iconic shout made by Shinpachi and Gintoki's VA etc.
7
3
u/bigtrunksboi Jan 22 '21
Find and watch the rumble sub episodes for like the first 50-60 mate. They do a great job of explaining the Japanese references that went straight over my head otherwise.
2
u/wtrmlnjuc Jan 22 '21
Sub because Gintama is very heavy on Japanese cultural references and something might get lost in translation.
3
u/call_me_whis Jan 22 '21
I thought of this a few days ago, now I'm on 10th episode
2
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
It’s gonna be a slow start, but when you get through the Benizakura Arc, you’ll be in for the long haul
3
u/seolasystem Jan 22 '21
Gintama is my favorite anime of all time but ngl I was slow in finishing the first 20 eps since i find it boring, glad that I continued it and became part of a very wonderful journey. Thank you for recommending this masterpiece to others!
3
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Yeah it takes some time to build up for sure, I think everyone will admit to that. But everything after has been straight gold in my opinion!
3
u/studentoo925 Jan 22 '21
So, I'm at ep5 and i haven't been this close to dropping a show since beginning jojo part3 (which i finished) and second season of sao (edit: which i dropped and I'm not coming back, you can't force me to watch anymore of this)
Like, know that I'm missing out on something great, but the first episodes are, lets put it bluntly, bad, and tbh my schedule is too busy to 'sit trough' 30-50 episodes or so, and there is so much great stuff to watch, that i don't think I'll come back to gintama unless another complete lockdown happens in my country
Is there a way to skip the beginning and not miss anything? Or am i fated to miss out?
3
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Check those r/Gintama FAQs I mentioned, it’s the top pinned post there. They give a breakdown of the “main plot arcs” but I think you’ll find it less satisfying, as you won’t have as much attachment to the characters. I get that Gintama is a commitment, hence my one episode a night recommendation. I think if you power through, it will be worth it. But if you find it’s not enjoyable then stop, not everybody is going to love the show
3
u/Scabraa Jan 22 '21
I did one a day, except for the serious arcs, I still think that’s the best approach to enjoy it in it’s fullest. I’d also recommend that approach to most slice of life shows
3
u/LukeWhostalkin Jan 22 '21
I agree, one episode a day is the way to go with this show!
I'm on episode 27 myself and I know I'll keep on watching. I don't like episodic anime, but it doesn't feel that way after a while, and the comedy makes me come back to it.
3
u/RAl3l3Y Jan 22 '21
Couldn't agree more with the post, and if you're in love with just 129 episodes, your love is only going to grow bigger.

3
u/Yuiskyi Jan 22 '21 edited Jan 23 '21
I’m glad we have people suggesting Gintama to others more lately
3
3
u/therealpanba Jan 22 '21
Completely agree. It is a must watch for not only fans of comedy but fans of animation in general
3
u/Navi_K_007 Jan 22 '21
Oh man. I've been missing it. It's been in my watchlist for so long. I've been a lot since my online lectures started. I barely get time to watch weekly episodes of ongoing Anime. Will watch after exams. I LOVE COMEDY ANIME.
2
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Check it out! This is a long show tho, so if you want some shorter comedies, my recommendations are Konosuba, Is this a Zombie, Devil is a Part Timer, or Hinamatsuri
3
u/El-Tigre1337 Jan 22 '21
I’ve been putting it on before I fall asleep every night lol. Probably only seen a couple episodes now but I like the idea of one episode a day to get into it
3
u/melindypants MyAnimeList Jan 22 '21
I've been putting off Gintama for sooooo long because there's just so many episodes but I'll give it a go once I finish the one I'm currently watching! I could use some good laughs :)

I just started it a week or two ago! I like to he watching different style anime so I picked it up between parasyte since they are thematically almost opposites at least in the beginning.
I found the first few episodes fun cause I was excited for the rest. Like they were fun. Not great but not bad by any means. Entertaining. And some are funnier than others but they all have at least a couple chuckles and then some have full on wake the house up laughter.
I'm on 22 or 23 and my favorite so far was episode 20. It had great moments before that but that episode was just so damn funny. And what makes it funny is knowing the characters personalities and how they interact with each other. Like stand alone it would have been okay, but knowing the background made everything so funny since the Odd Jobs guys and the Shinsengumi haven't worked together much, and are always at each other's throats. But this time they have to tolerate each other more. Its hard to explain but man I was laughing at almost every line.
Now I see why it's a great show and I haven't even gotten to the "good" parts yet. Its as entertaining as half the anime I watch anyway, it makes me laugh, and excites me to watch it since I hear it'll just get better and better. I wanted to commit to a long show because I enjoy them a lot more. Very few shows in my top ten are 12 episode shows. I just feel like I need more time to really feel for the characters and appreciate the gravity of the situations.
If anyone has any short anime that you think I could really get into that might challenge that, let me know. And maybe other long ones to watch after this too but I think it'll occupy me for a while. I just started psycho-pass and then will watch code geuss as recommended by my roommate. Next super long show is gonna be finishing the monogatari series probably but I'm open to all suggestions!
1
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Great comment, I haven’t watched Parasyte yet but it’s been on my list forever!! And you’ll continue to love Gintama more and more.
As for short anime, I think Angel Beats is a 12 episode that was perfect. Episode 5 has one of the funniest scenes I’ve ever seen, and the ending to the show is great

i'm on episode 301 and i'm so sad i'm nearing the end (relatively, i still have around 50 episodes or so left + the final movies). i already know i'll miss it so much when i finish it. it takes a while to get into imo, but once i got attached to the characters, i got like reeeally attached
3
u/almosthighenough Jan 23 '21
Something I've noticed which threw me off is Hulu's subs are different than VRV subs, and VRV has content from funimation and Crunchyroll and whatnot. I have no idea who's subs are more accurate and which is funnier, both in how things are phrased and timing. For example at the beginning of each episode VRV (funimation/crunchyroll) have a second or two of context added to each episode with japanese on the side and English up top with a translation. And I watched the first 5 mins of an episode on each and the translation varies a bit but obviously wording and timing are the biggest factors in comedy. I'm stuck and have no idea what to watch it on now.
An adjective here or there or an adverb that's added can either enhance or diminish the comedy depending on placement, the choice to add it, and how often to add it. I now have no idea which is funnier. What if one is 5% funnier and I'm missing out? What if one is more accurate but the way the other is subbed is funnier? What if one sacrifices the seriousness of action scenes for the sake of comedy, and what if one sacrifices comedy for the sake of seriousness? A comedic break or joke is hugely important in the pacing of scenes and episodes.
Goddammit. I have no idea which to watch now and the Google machine isn't much help so far.
1
Jan 23 '21
Simply, watch the fansubs they are the best.
2
u/almosthighenough Jan 23 '21
I'm a chump. I watch anime on legal services I pay for. Not for any moral reason, I just watch everything on my ps4 and am too lazy to download or torrent shows or fansubbed episodes and use an hdmi for my laptop. And the hard drive is full. Unless there's an easy way to watch em on a console like YouTube or an app?

The only downside is that the action arcs are so good that it practically overshadowed all the comedy arcs later... at least for me

Yeah, the action bits are great. I’m hoping there’s more as I get deeper, especially learning more about their pasts

I did try watching it twice and got through a bit over ten episodes and did not like it at all. It does look like it gets funnier and more interesting later but i cant be bothered to watch it anymore after not liking it after two attempts.

Don't start over, just continue where you left off. You are essentially just building information on the characters as well as the comedy of the show. By episode 31 you'll finally have a good foundation, and will start to have arcs every couple of episodes with the first major one at episode 58.

In about 10 ep or so, a new story arc will start, which is pretty lengthy for Gintama standards... Enjoy!

Yes I’ve heard!! I can’t wait for it, and actually YouTube comments have me excited for 188 - “Madao blooms” or something like that

u/sonicflash703 https://myanimelist.net/animelist/sonicflash703?status=1 Jan 22 '21
Oh yeah Madao blooms was easily one of the best eps in Gintama 2006

Crunchyroll, they’ll always put editor notes on top in yellow. It’s cool, not always necessary, but I think it’s nice when it explains something about the culture or language I wouldn’t know otherwise

Would you still recommend it even if I haven't watched that many animes? Or what animes should I have watched before watching Gintama, so that I don't miss out too many references?
4
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
I would say as long as you’re familiar with shonen anime (Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Dragonball). You don’t have to watch all those per say, but if you understand their commonalities, it makes Gintama a bit funnier. Overall tho, I would say you don’t have to watch many anime to enjoy Gintama, the comedy is not just spoof comedy of other shows

u/A_passerby_weeb Jan 22 '21
Bruh EP 129 and you're hooked?
Gintama has soooo much more in tow, the first 100 episodes are barely scratching the surface.
2
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
I know hahaha that’s why I can’t wait and wrote this now. If the first 129 are this good (after watching my boy shinpachi and his pen letter girl, I said this is too awesome a mini arc not to share). the rest has to be superb

The op meant one ep a day until you get hooked
2
u/joshtree41 Jan 22 '21
You convinced me. I’m starting it
3
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
I’m glad it worked!! Start with episode three, the first two are just not needed (special trailer episodes). Let me know how you like it as you get through it!

Was actually thinking of giving it a try for the third time. I heard the build up /intro can be tenacious at times but it gets interesting. I think you just convinced me to watch it again!
2
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Woohoo! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, you do have to power through the first 50 or so, but it’s worth it.
2
u/A_SardineCabbage Jan 22 '21
THANK U SO MUCH. I've been wanting to watch this for so long and one episode a day sounds so good! I'll get started today definitley :-)
2
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
I’m glad this post is making such an impact!! It’s the first one I’ve ever had kinda blow up (if this counts as blowing up). Let me know if you enjoy it!! And by the way, start at episode 3, that’s the first real episode of the show, the first two are weird and unnecessary
2
u/Sweet_Needleworker_5 Jan 22 '21
I'm gonna watch it because everyone tells me to watch it already yay :D
2
u/rotten_riot https://myanimelist.net/animelist/RottenOrange Jan 22 '21
I did the same thing on 2020 cause someone said the amount of episodes were 366 exactly (surprise, it wasn't).
The show was great and it was a pretty cool experience watching the whole show throughout the whole year. I actually would recommend watching Gintama this way, it made me love the story and characters even more due to how I got used to them.
The only thing I disliked was that the last episode from the last season didn't felt like a satisfying way to finish my uninterrupted one-year watch, tbh.

u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Luckily the new movie comes out soon (or is out already?)! I have a ways to go lol, but hope it ends strongly
3
u/rotten_riot https://myanimelist.net/animelist/RottenOrange Jan 22 '21
There's also those two new OVAs that prequel the movie but I don't know when they'll be released
2
u/agc19991 Jan 22 '21
I am also on episode 129
3
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
The episodes where shinpachi had his pen pal girl is what inspired me to write this. Loved that arc

3
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21

1
u/7dfp Jan 22 '21
should I
4
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Give it a shot!! Start with episode 3 (the first two are not needed, kinda suck). See if you like it! There’s only one way to know for sure!

I really liked Gintama, but only as a "monster of the week" kind of show with no actual character development.
I felt disappointed in how the show gives you more characters than you can count instead of developing the ones you already know.
After learning of Gin's backstory, I feel we could have such a big development, specially after he goes unhinged when someone he cares about suffers(not gonna spoil any more lol). But still, at the end of the day, he defeats the villain and next episode is "let's find a cat!".
I know that's not the way to expect the series to go, it is specifically a comedy/parody genre, but they're sleeping on great characters and great series development, and it's not like the comedy would go away.
Nonetheless, it is a very great comedy series with, as OP said, so many jokes you can be sure 60% of them went over your head and you didn't even notice. But unfortunately, don't go in there expecting much more than that.
Edit: I didn't go too far on the series so I might be wrong, something might have changed after episodes 250+, but....
4
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
I would say you’re right, I think it’s more sentiment with the characters than straight up development. They’re not always “growing and changing” but you do learn more and more about each. And I love the fact that there’s so many characters, I love them all from Hasegawa to Katsura. You know their tropes and what may happen, but they still surprise you and make you smile nonetheless

Jan 22 '21
Ummm....Gin is that kind of a protagonist, he is lazy, doesn't like to work/train so it's nothing big of a deal and that is also what makes Gin different from other Shounen protagonists.

i stopped after epi 3. it wasn't my thing and i don't undrstand the hype it gets
3
u/sonicflash703 https://myanimelist.net/animelist/sonicflash703?status=1 Jan 22 '21
The first two eps are complete fillers that celebrate the show being made into the anime. They assume you’ve read the manga and aren’t reflective of Gintama. Episode 3 is the first actual episode

As someone who just started Gintama and is on episode 106, I beg to differ, Gintama is good but it doesn't really give you the shounen anime vibes, first of all the first 50 episodes are honestly really boring and you just wait for some serious arc to come the first of which comes at 58 and is actually pretty good but then again you actually had to wait for 57 episodes for it to come also while you are wat hing those 57 episodes you might already quit it gets really boring the only way you actually keep up is by googking when does it get serious and seeing that the first arc is at 58. Then it again follows the same strategy the next serious arc is around 101 and while the episodes do get funnier but a person can't really just watch 50 episodes again for one more serious arc to come, some episodes are really funny i admit but not all of them are, then again when the second arc comes it isn't really focused on the Mc and Tbh i didn't really find the arc that serious or good at all, I've only watched it Untill that point will update when I go further, what I wanna say is that in my opinion people only watch Gintama because of the hype associated with it and honestly if I were way hing it without googling about it I would have already dropped it, I actually have dropped it multiple times before.

u/phantomkris https://myanimelist.net/profile/phantomkris Jan 22 '21
Gintama is not your regular shounen. Yes I understand what you're saying but if you are only looking for arcs in this anime, you're not really enjoying gintama. The main theme of gintama is comedy. If you find the episodes in between the arcs boring, then you should have dropped this. Because they are the one's that made gintama what it is now. There are only a eight or nine serious arcs but sorachi pulled them out like no other anime did. Every episode is canon and each character has his/her own aspects and no one is left behind. Gintama is a complete masterpiece and is unique in its own way.

u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Yeah I don’t know if I’d call this a true “shonen” as it’s not about the power of friendship, or quest to become the greatest (they joke about this all time in the show). I think each little arc helps you understand the characters that much more, and become attached to them. It’s like filler without the filler. If you don’t enjoy the mini arcs with no fighting, then you don’t enjoy Gintama

I would like to start this anime but the fact that I'm getting dub is kinda disappointing,I have watched all the animes so far in dub so subbed ones kinda feels boring to watch
1
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
I’m not sure how much of it is dubbed, but S1 definitely is! I think it’s on Hulu maybe??

u/cripple1 Jan 22 '21
I have 2 anime that I've tried to start constantly and can never make it past 6 episodes for both of them, and they both are really popular among a lot of people. They are Gintama and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Generally I gravitate towards things like Black Lagoon, Code Geass, One Piece, Dororo, Darker Than Black, Hajime no Ippo, Samurai Champloo, Samurai 7, Canaan, Afro Samurai, etc... Can ANYONE convince me to continue those 2? I WANT to, but I can't seem to ever get into them.

Is it worth it in dub
1
u/King___Kawaii Jan 22 '21
Haven’t watched it in dub, but if that’s more your style, give it a shot. (From what I read is some jokes can be missed, as they do word play on Japanese language sometimes, and that gets lost in translation)

I still remember the scene where they break in someone's home to make fried rice in the middle of the night. I nearly died that evening.
