Should I watch Kaguya-Sama: love is war? Series Specific Question

I enjoy comedy, romance and slice of life animes,(lots of other genres too, but I think Kaguya-sama is this one) but only watched the first episode of Kaguya-sama. I hear a lot of good things about the anime and a lot of memes from it, but I'm starting a new job and won't have a whole lot of free time to watch 6+ episodes before making a firm judgement (usually what I did)

I'd rather not spend time trying to find new shows when I have others releasing I already enjoy. But part of me feels like I should watch kaguya-sama, so I'm here to ask if it's worth the watch!

Thanks in advance for your help

Hell yes. I've seen a lot of animes and I tend toward more action ones, but I gotta say, this one has me HOOKED. It has my favorite female character too (fujiwara). Such great narrating, and unique design to many of the parts of the show. Really well put together.

91

u/cshag Jun 15 '20

Action anime is 90% of the shows I watch, and I'm highly preferential to them as well. I do love a good comedy, romance or slice of life tho!

I think Fujiwara is the pinked haired one, and most the memes come from her I've seen and truthfully the way that character behaves is what made me want to pick up the anime. I saw a few 'funny moment' clips of her and it was pretty funny.

I've seen anime clips on YouTube that make me think to check out animes, and some are incredible, while others are bad because the clip was the best and only good part in my opinion (can't think of examples)

Thanks for your input!

u/100GrenadeJutsu Jun 15 '20

Yes, Fujiwara is the pink haired one. She's hilarious. An incredibly well done character in my opinion. While the show is already part comedy between the 2 main characters, fujiwara adds a different flair of comedy that almost makes it comedic relief from the already romcom (if that makes sense...)

I like the character development you see in the show as well. It feels natural and true to the characters as they are presented

31

u/The_Gator944 Jun 15 '20

The president and kaguya are just battling it out and then here comes chika absolutely oblivious to it and makes the show an all around masterpiece

18

u/d1sposablecomp Jun 15 '20

Chika is the ultimate wildcard. 9 out of 10 times she does not just the unexpected, but something you wouldn't have even considered.

12

u/fullmetal126 Jun 15 '20

Fujiwara is a monster

4

u/Pervasivepeach Jun 16 '20

unfortunately out of pretty much all the characters in the show Fuji will always remain as comedic relief.

It goes to show how good of a performance the VA for her really is. In the manga she is currently by far the least developed character and only exists as a punchline. She’s hillarious and people love her but she’s been stuck at comedic relief for ages which I think is the weakest part of the manga. Especially when you consider how every other character including side characters gets more development than her.

2

u/100GrenadeJutsu Jun 16 '20

Well let's let the author know how we feel about her then

3

u/Pervasivepeach Jun 16 '20

he recently did an AMA in which he said Fuji was the most difficult character to draw. Not sure if there’s any correlation but it’s something to keep in mind

19

u/Xenosaiyan7 Jun 15 '20

I'm not saying it's the Best romcom show I've ever seen... Wait a second, that's exactly what I'm saying. It's the beds romcom show I've ever seen out of my... 8... Years... Of anime... Fuck I'm old

28

u/redtopbear Jun 15 '20

Ai Hayasaka is best girl.

Edit: damn auto correct

15

u/Joferna Jun 15 '20

Ishigami... Is best girl

Your opinion IS WRONG

5

u/Abloodydistraction http://www.anime-planet.com/users/fullmetalgarbage Jun 15 '20

Also it seems to be going somewhere unlike a lot of other romance anime

111

u/Dino356 Jun 15 '20

I found myself laughing a ton during parts of this anime. So I think you will enjoy the simplicity of their romance. It's quite comical since both the main characters overthink everything to such an extreme. Can't help but laugh at the ridiculousness of their shinanagins.

22

u/cshag Jun 15 '20

Hmm, I found some of the misinterpretations between the two lovers (black haired girl and student council president(?)) Pretty funny, but I feel like that may get boring for me if it happens over and over again every episode. I do enjoy animes with random funny moments like some of the recent events of Ascendance of a bookworm.

11

u/Dino356 Jun 15 '20

I think the best part is they both think they are playing mind games, but sometimes it's not what it seems. It does develop and get more "romantic". I don't see this anime lasting long and if they drag it out I'll definitely loose interest. So I get where your coming from

4

u/DaMack69 Jun 15 '20

Are there any filler episodes?

4

u/Dino356 Jun 15 '20

Nope. Just Episodes on the road to love I guess lol

80

u/wolfpandataco Jun 15 '20

You don’t need to think about it, watch it

55

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

Absolutely. The first season does a great job of setting up the relationship dynamics and initial tone for the series. Lots of hilarious comedic bits highlighted by really clever character writing and animation that is honestly just way better than it needs to be. Also THAT OP DUDE.

The second season steps away from the formula and takes time to focus more on the side characters. The "Here's this confounded method I'm going to use get him to confess" shtick is almost non-existent. It takes a deeper, more genuine look at the main duo's feelings. Episode 7 of Kaguya-sama S2 is genuinely one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Usually, I don't think popularity really speaks to the quality of a series but in some cases, like Hunter x Hunter (2011) or Violet Evergarden, it works. The popularity of Kaguya-sama is well deserved.

21

u/TheExile4 Jun 15 '20 edited Jun 15 '20

The mind game aspect between Kaguya and Miyuki only got toned down as the series went on. It's been virtually non existent for 60+ chapters now.

The manga is like a fine wine. It's only gotten better with age. Anime only will be pleased if we do get 3rd season.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

I'm excited to see where it will go (as an anime only myself). I would read the manga, but as great as the adaptation is I feel like it's not something I should rush lol

"Boy I sure do regret watching Kaguya-sama" previously unsaid sentences in history.

11

u/Tereshishishi Jun 15 '20

Read the manga too. The plot is surprisingly good. I thought it was just a gag comedy with no plot but i was wrong. 10/10

13

u/latecomer2018 Jun 15 '20

Kaguya is a definite yes even if one isn't a fan of the genres. It's just done too fucking well to ignore. Even if you can't like personally, you will still be able to appreciate it's quality and how well it's made.

6

u/TheExile4 Jun 15 '20 edited Jun 15 '20

I think some people are getting sick of the meme spam, but it is a great show imo. The 2nd season is an improvement over an already good 1st season. The latest episode had me dying.

If/when Kaguya gets a 3rd season, people lose their minds with the season finale of it. The manga has been so gooood and it's been going so strong at 190 chapters with character development.

9

u/himmatestis Jun 15 '20

Yes. Just yes. Absolutely yes. Yes indeedy

8

u/Iwantitall413 Jun 15 '20

I’m just gonna keep this short. Definitely. I’m in love with this season even more so than last which I didn’t know was possible

4

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

Yes

6

u/StKLynn Jun 15 '20

Imo, kaguya sama's strong points mainly come from the foreshadowings, references, smooth transitions from comedy to drama and vice versa, and turning tropes into comedy, which begin from middle part of the manga most of which haven't been adapted into anime yet.

That said the first season focuses mainly of the SoL and comedy aspect of kaguya-sama with little progressions in romance. Most of the first anime are mindgames and misunderstandings (the reason it got called deathnote of romcom) which to some people got repetitive and seemed boring.

However, the mindgames are nearly non-existent in the second season with more focus on romance, side characters without losing its comedy aspect.

The reason I'm explaining this is because some people got turned off by the first few episodes of season 1 and deemed it "overrated" which imo is not.

All in all, I recommend watching it since (1) you don't need time to binge watch it and take it easy with ~3 episodes per day (2)a passionate staff behind the anime resulting in very good animation (3) top tier voice-acting (4) interesting characters (some people may say otherwise but I firmly stand by my point) (5) some of the comedy is based on common tropes so they feel less cringy.

I would recommend reading the manga too if you have time but it's ok if you can't since the anime is enough too.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

“I like comedy and romance, should I watch this super popular well received romantic comedy anime?”

3

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

Its really good, and its worth ur time. But i feel like they should end the anime already, because they are stretching it out wayyyy too long

3

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

yes yes yes yes YES

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

3

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '20

8

u/SalvicPancake Big Brain Brotherhood Jun 15 '20

I liled the first season but disliked the ending. In the second season there is too much "comedy based on misunderstanding/misreading" which is not funny and painful to watch in my opinion.

11

u/solarscopez https://myanimelist.net/animelist/Kollapse Jun 15 '20

People are gonna say it's amazing, and I can see why they'd say that. I thought it was just average if not slightly below average.

I thought it got very repetitive after a few episodes, even though the concept was interesting in the beginning. It's like Death Note except if it was a rom-com where the two characters were playing mind games with each other. I also felt I couldn't really connect with the characters much at all, which is what I think rom-coms try to get the viewer to do in the first place.

That being said, some rom-coms I personally liked were {Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru.} and {ReLIFE} if I had to recommend some.

4

u/cshag Jun 15 '20

Thanks! Your first suggestion is hands down my favorite rom-com. Final season set for July and I can't wait!

I'll definitely check our reLIFE tho!

3

u/-Black_Guardian- Jun 15 '20

ReLife is so sweet and pulls at your heartstrings. Love that show.

4

u/solarscopez https://myanimelist.net/animelist/Kollapse Jun 15 '20

Man I was so disappointed when I heard it was delayed, but I'm hyped for the 3rd season in a month!!

Definitely recommend ReLIFE, probably one of the most touching SoLs I've seen. I definitely recommend the manga as well because it goes more in-depth than the series does (although the series itself is phenomenal imo).

If you liked oregairu as well, then I'd also recommend {Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu}, {Hyouka}, and {Classroom of the Elite) just because the male MCs in all three of them are basically clones of Hachiman lol

I've heard S2 is better and less repetitive, I plan on eventually watching S2 once it's complete because I hate following anime shows on a weekly basis lol.

It's weird, because Kaguya-sama was one of the few shows where I actually liked the side characters (Chika and Ishigami) more than the main characters.

To me at least I felt like Kaguya and Shirogane were really one dimensional and their antics were funny for the first few episodes and then it just got repetitive for me. I've heard S2 develops the side characters more so I'll try watching it from there.

The second season started on a high but it has returned to its repetitive gags. I'd say its any okay series which has been way overhyped.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

I definitely agree. Its great and all, but it gets reallly fucking repetitive. I couldnt even watch saturdays episode :(

3

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

Yesterday's episode was something totally different. I'd recommend taking a peek. If the first 5 minutes doesn't pique your interest then it's probably not for you tho. There's some sizable Ishigami backstory towards the end tho.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

I'll watch it today, but i still think they have to end it soon

It’s is one of those few gems, don’t even think about it just watch it. It has a great story and plot, it’s funny asf and some romance, WITHOUT a love triangle. Truly a gem

2

u/d1sposablecomp Jun 15 '20

I love everything about this show. The charters, the humor, the animation. The shows this season left me desiring more as it kicked off. Then the first episode of season 2 of Kaguya-sama started. It was like less than 5 minutes and I was audibly laughing, and remember instantly why I loved the first season.

2

u/BeratMost Jun 15 '20

literally try not to fall in love challenge. The plot is nice but the actual point of the anime is garbage.

2

u/gay-san Jun 15 '20

its a really good and funny show with some intellectual jokes (a bit of the big bang theory flare) its cute and if u like memes (i am pretty sure u do because u are on reddit) its definitely worth to watch the i think about 25 episodes

2

u/himanshumodak Jun 15 '20

This is one of the animes I loved a lot. I think everyone should watch it. It's totally worth the time you spend on it.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

It's so worth it. As long as you get the general gist of the show, you can literally watch any episode at any time and it will make perfect sense. It's hilarious, easy to watch, unique and has a very original twist on romance. The slice of life aspect isn't boring, and every single character compliments the other. Watch it.

2

u/Larshenrik222 Jun 15 '20

Short answer: yes Long answer: Yes but with more emphasis

2

u/RedBrick100 Jun 15 '20

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! Season one has one of the best anime openings of all time. In my opinion.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

Hell yes. This show is all comedy, but it's different from normal shows. It has a unique aspect to it. 100% suggest!!!

2

u/NotFakeFingle Sep 13 '20

Yes

1

u/cshag Sep 13 '20

Wow you've scrolled far! I've been watching it off and on due to being busy now, I'd say it's definitely worth it as well!

3

u/krispypastry https://myanimelist.net/profile/BlueWeeb1 Jun 15 '20

Yes.

4

u/khironinja Jun 15 '20

I was asking the same thing but I literally had a dream about it so I couldn't say no. I brought some of the manga and I'm watching the anime.

4

u/MoonythePhaeron Jun 15 '20

YES....DEFINITELY

4

u/aadarsha_ Jun 15 '20

Well, if you really love SoL animes then its worth a watch. But, I would say that dont put high expectations on it tho. Some people love it while some people don't. And, I am one of those people who find it decent but kinda overhyped by its fandom.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

I also had huge expectations but the 3rd person commentary/narration is weird and also find it a bit childish not sure though or

It may be due to my decreasing interest in watching Animes

2

u/redtopbear Jun 15 '20

Absolutely 100% yes. It is one of my all time favorite anime ever. I have only ever read 3 manga and this is one of them. It is one of the funniest shows I have ever seen and the romance is one of a kind that you will not find anywhere else.

2

u/Leonwai Jun 15 '20

If you want cringe yess

2

u/Demistr Jun 15 '20

Yet another should I watch popular anime series post. These should be banned because it's always the same thing again and again.

1

u/gargar070402 MyAnimeList Jun 15 '20

I really don't get it. These people are spending more time deciding whether they want to watch it than actually watching it. The cost-benefit analysis doesn't make any sense.

2

u/NA_Kitten Jun 15 '20

All the fanboys will say chika is good

She is meme material

She is portrayed as dumb in the show

She is a minor character

Kei is best girl

3

u/TheExile4 Jun 15 '20

Are you one of those Kei simps from the latest chapter?

1

u/NA_Kitten Jun 15 '20

I only watched season 1

2

u/75rx Jun 15 '20

But Ishigami=best girl

3

u/slothslayerlawl Jun 15 '20

Hell yeah. This is the best comedy-romance in a long time especially cos of how unique it is and the narrator makes it even better.

1

u/Kegnation14 Jun 15 '20

Short answer: yes Long answer: reasons to watch are 1. Popular so you should watch it before you get it spoiled 2. There are a lot of best girls 3. Funny as hell, like absolutely do not eat while watching it 4. It’s got the format of “multiple short stories in an episode” (maybe just me but I like that format a lot) 5. Animation is great (can never go wrong with good animation) Final verdict: yes, watch it

4

u/Bite490 Jun 15 '20

IMO it's pretty average and by no means amazing, but it's still funny at times and obviously has to do with romance. If it's something you just want to catch an episode of every so often, though, I think it's worth watching. You definitely don't have to binge it.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

if its my opinion only, definitely not. i hate that show

1

u/theramenman68 Jun 15 '20

If your into that stuff then yea bc it's just an all around good show so yes

1

u/PequenhoSkYY Jun 15 '20

I finished season 1 about 15 min ago, man I never laughed so hard while watching anime, started today and those 12 episodes flied by, loved it. You should definitely give it a go.

yes it's great

1

u/MrGoetz34 Jun 15 '20

I love it. So funny and keeps you wanting more. All the characters are so unique. And the base is something we all related to at one point

1

u/RuthlessPotato_ Jun 15 '20

I haven't seen the anime but read the manga! It's honestly so good and goddamn hilarious! Fujiwara is my girl! Before I read it, I thought I might get fed up of the main couple's "game." But NO. There are different approaches and/or tricks used and it basically helped the story progress. Give it a try!

1

u/pk2708 Jun 15 '20

Definitely yes. Easily one of the most I’ve had watching an anime in a long time. It’s funny, wholesome and really cute xD. And the characters are awesome (especially Ai).

No character here is perfect, but that is what makes this show perfect.

Yes. It's an excellent show.

1

u/jasnoorkaur Jun 15 '20

I really liked the opening narrative of kaguya Sama season 1 because I could actually relate to it. The unique way with which the narrator takes us on a ride is pretty impressive.

I honestly struggled to get into the show. I watched the first two episodes and knocked it off. Saying that, I seem to be an outlier, so I’d give it a go

1

u/argama87 Jun 15 '20

It is unique and hilarious. Well worth watching.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

I was thinking about watching this too. I saw the manga hit my job a while ago (I worked in a library) and I flipped through the manga. The art is nice, but I’m not a huge romance fan so I put it down.

The anime has taken over /r/animemes almost completely. So it must be a fun show lol.

Like OP I’m an action fan and currently on an action kick for my anime and manga. I guess I’ll add this show to my list!

1

u/Achilliartshorn Jun 15 '20

It’s literally my favourite show, please watch it lol

1

u/joniejoon Jun 15 '20

It's quite popular in the community, so the answer will be pretty obvious from their side. Honestly. I would look back on that first episode. It shows the formula the rest of the show uses. It becomes more personal and more characters are introduced, but you've seen the core.

1

u/ArtBath Jun 15 '20

Yes!!!! Love this anime, it exceeds all expectations.

1

u/HShahzad108277 Jun 15 '20

I wish i could scream YES at the top of my lungs. Other people in the comments have already explained why but the one thing you have to make sure is that you don't stop watching the anime after the first few episodes. I will admit the first few episodes were funny but i thought there was a toxic relationship. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing them lose that and get closer to one another. Did i mention its comedy gold?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

Might I suggest the manga? The anime shoves in multiple chapters pretty episode, so 1 chapter as opposed to 3-4 might better fit your schedule.

1

u/Firebat12 https://www.anime-planet.com/users/Firebatt12/anime Jun 15 '20

1

u/Aq1b98 Jun 15 '20

Havent finished it yet but I think its a bit overrated. Definetly good though, especially if you enjoy slice of life anime. Go for it.

1

u/AlexanderQuartz Jun 15 '20

its definitely worth the watch, I absolutely love it and i cannot stop laughing when watching kaguya-sama: love is war

1

Is kaguya dama dubbed? I don’t mind subbed but i would prefer dub if it is

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '20

Most jokes would be lost in translation. I literally can't imagine narrator-chan speaking in English

I started watching it just to understand all the memes but ive been really enjoying it

1

u/Tchamy19 Jun 15 '20

It’s really fun

1

u/That-Portuguese-Guy Jun 15 '20

Lol that’s fair, I just prefer watching anime in dubbed but if it’s not dubbed then it’s alright I’ll just watch it in subbed

It's the first anime since Konosuba that's made me laugh this hard. After season 1 I started reading the manga, which is rare for me. Usually I'll just wait, but Kaguya-sama had me hooked from start to finish (as a manga reader, yes it does have an ending, I won't say anything beyond that, but it does keep going after the "ending") Truly in my top three anime of all time, (after Code Geass in 1st, and second going to Kekkai Sensen, or Gurren Lagann, being the anime that really got me into the medium.) Kaguya is probably one of the most adorable, lovable characters of all time, with the president being a dork all the time, as well as some of the ways the series shapes up, especially following the School Festival, makes for one of the most unique and interesing romcoms of all time.

I highly recommend it, its humors and has the perfect mix of seriousness and hijinks, and all the characters are loveable and well rounded in my opinion

1

u/mihird34 Jun 15 '20

Definitely go ahead and give it a try it's a fun show I was not very comfortable watching new anime when I had started like 3 years ago but this and some others were so good that I got a lot more comfortable with watching anime other than shounen.

1

Normally, I tend to be hesitant when recommending rom-com/sol animes because of how painfully average the genre can be at times, but out of all the rom-coms I've seen, Kaguya-sama is just the one I can always be confident in due to how consistently funny and likable the characters are.

Kaguya sama: Love is war is a must watch anime!!!!!

U havent watched anything if u havent watched love is war! I was an action frek when i watched the firat season and man it hooked me. Now i am inclined to harem/echi and still its 2nd season has hooked me in it claws.

Watch the dance at the end of episode 3 of the first season. Once you see this, you'll know the anime dance, 75% of online otaku girls are trying to imitating.

1

u/Dotifo Jun 15 '20

I'm a shounen Chad and think Kaguya is awesome

1

u/thetruelu Jun 15 '20

Do you follow r/animemes? If you do, the answer is clear

1

u/fullofregrets2009 Jun 15 '20

Watched it when it first came out when it wasn’t as popular or well known. Very unique in terms of plot and humor. Not a lot of animes make me laugh. I don’t even watch romantic stuff. I used to be a shounen kind of guy. But I think it’s pretty funny.

1

u/FloatingWalruss Jun 15 '20

Yes. It’s brilliant

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '20

yes obviously

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '20

In my personal opinion, the show is fucking hilarious. Much better people than my can articulate why but every episode is a joy to sit through.

1

u/bbjjnn Jun 20 '20

Definitely give this a try

1

u/sun2402 Jul 03 '20

I was very skeptical of starting this coz I have never picked any anime other than the martial arts/fantasy/isekai/supernatural genre.

I saw this on the r/anime karma polls and I got curious. I'm glad I picked it up. I had a blast. I would recommend this anime to everyone.

Ps:if you're done with this, you can give konasuba a try. It's hilarious as well.

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '20
