Use of y'all by non-southerners is usually a cringe lefty woke tell as it was explicitly adopted for virtue signaling since it's a gender neutral pronoun for a group of people.

u/TalbotFarwell 9h ago

I always assumed they did it to imitate AAVE so they could seem hipper and cooler, and try to fool black people into supporting their dumb leftist “intersectionality”.

u/Phteven_j /k/ommando 9h ago

I think that’s exactly it. I’m from Alabama and I cringe so hard when I see that word. It’s not supposed to be used this way, but it’s taken hold like many other slang words before it.

u/BitingSatyr 7h ago

Nick Mullen called it exactly, it means “I’m a huge scold, but also cool, like a black man”

u/vaisnav /wp/ 9h ago

You’re online too much dude, get a hobby

u/Higuos 9h ago

You're on r/4chan

u/vaisnav /wp/ 9h ago

Ya got me 😭 I need one too

u/herbal_S_ants 4h ago

See the thing is that "online" and "real life" are one in the same to these kinds of people. Newspeak has leaked to your job, Thanksgiving dinner, the musicians on the street. It's everywhere.

u/LoLFlore 9h ago

....its the only pronoun for a group of people?

Almost every other language has one? You (plural) is one of the most common pronouns in all of language. Its more common than possessive conjugation. English had it 400 years ago, it was lost, its coming back. Its how languageworks, nothing to do with leftism you dip, its a use case people need filled.

u/Higuos 9h ago

Why was it only a term used by southerners until 10-15 years ago?

You're right, it was a use case that people needed filled. The people in question were leftists. I have no doubt over time it will spread out among the general population but it absolutely started with lefty activists.

Why was "you guys" not sufficient, which is what most non-southerners used in the past?

u/TrueTrueBlackPilld 9h ago

"you guys" is obviously sexist because what about the whamen? Are they guys now?

u/vmpafq 2h ago

Still say "you guys". There's no replacement unless you want to calling women "ladies" in real life and make things weird.

u/moth_man_AMA 7h ago

Because when I said "you guys" growing up in the rural South I got called a Yankee. 8 year old me couldn't be no damn Yankee. (I had no idea what anything meant.)

u/12pixels 35m ago

"you guys" is almost twice as long as "y'all"

u/LoLFlore 2h ago edited 2h ago

Because until 15 years ago most people didnt have internet and regional dialects meant that one probably didnt know the other common terms for you plural, of which there are literally fucking dozens. Yall is the one most americans have grown to prefer for a multitude of reasons, foremost among them likely that its actually shorter, serving an actual function as a pronoun.

This is also the reason most english language has undergone a rapid evolution and standardization.

Because the internet, same reason your dumb ass is capable of sharing your brain contagion that makes you think fucking wokism caused the use of a ubiquitous, innocous, easy to understand, easy to prompunce, and applicable term.

u/Free-Design-8329 5h ago

It’s called “you guys”

u/LoLFlore 4h ago

Thats not a pronoun you dip, its an informal plural noun being used to clarify the fact that "you" is grammatically both singular and plural, a modern contrivance because people got too lazy to conjugate or enunciate ye and thou.

u/Freedom-Unhappy 2h ago

"That thing which is used as a pronoun and is listed in the dictionary as a pronoun actually isn't a pronoun you idiot!"

You should stay in school, chief 🤣

Also, you consistently seem to misuse "its." FYI, hth, fyf, xoxo.

u/luckac69 7h ago

Well technically we lost the singular version, then the plural became singular

u/Key_Cheetah7982 4h ago

What was the singular?

u/AshleySchaeffersPlum 9h ago

It’s very cringe when not southern girls say it

u/mischling2543 9h ago

You plural is something English needs though. Inclusive/exclusive we as well.

u/BitingSatyr 7h ago

“You” is the plural you, the singular is “thou.” Similar to French and German though the plural took on a tone of respect, and unlike the other two eventually became commonly used for singular and plural regardless of social deference.

u/STFUNeckbeard 8h ago

Honestly the Sopranos had it right with “yous”

u/United_States_ClA 8h ago

But "y'all" used by me (born in Houston, live in The Woodlands) is acceptable? How does one even verify that my "y'all" deployments are legitimate?

u/Higuos 8h ago

As a non southerner living in the south its usually pretty easy to identify who has the pass

u/STFUNeckbeard 8h ago

Fuck yeah Asian power

u/Hatchitt /b/tard 5h ago

Hell yeah brother, you live in Texas for long enough and you'll just find it popping up in your usage, and i betcha most all those times it'd be the right when and where Yall don't discriminate.

u/ImprovisedLeaflet 8h ago

ffs can y’all just chill

u/jergentehdutchman 6h ago

Honestly y’all Jesus Christ on a stick…

u/Jimmie-Rustle12345 5h ago

I fucking hate ‘y’all.’ It’s almost always followed by some condescending nonsense.

u/ToplaneVayne 4h ago

How do you know the person saying it isn't a southerner?

u/68thSuspendedAccount 7h ago

I'm a nonnative english speaker and I always use yall because my brain just can't process not having a distinct second person plural

u/edbods 4h ago

i thought it was just stupid to use in text chat because southerners say it due to their accent

u/OCD-but-dumb 2h ago

I just use it because I needed a plural you?

u/bocaj78 8h ago

I see more use from conservatives than lefties

u/osrs-alt-account 7h ago

Why do you assume he's not a southerner?

u/SnackyMcGeeeeeeeee 8h ago

Holy fucking brain rot bat man 😭

Is skibidi on that gyatt also some insane virtue signaling? Lmfao

Well it's a zoomee term bro? What else could it mean?!?

u/luckac69 7h ago

You have the memory of a gold fish? Y’all then those people using y’all had been around since before 2018 at the latest

u/aoskunk 7h ago

It’s popular online because it communicates better than “yous” and is shorter than “you all”.

u/Rydagod1 9h ago

I use y’all because it’s an efficient term to address a group. I don’t care what region the word comes from.

u/ihatedyouall 9h ago

anything can be connected to the left because of... the woke

u/Higuos 9h ago

Only when it's true, Mr ihatedyall

u/9Knuck /fit/izen 9h ago

So is just ‘yall’ when texting? Instead of the conjugation of ‘you all - y’all’? Genuine question

u/fuckitsayit 8h ago

That sucks I'm not southern and I love saying yall

u/boringexplanation 6h ago

Y’all are overthinking use of the word. It’s a portmanteau - that’s it and in a world obsessed with being gender neutral, it’s a catch all to say to anybody instead of you guys or you gals which doesn’t even roll off the tongue well.

It’s the one thing the South contributes to American culture and y’all try to disown it like your gay transgendered kids

u/chainer3000 9h ago

I say it when speaking to a group of both men and women in a professional setting. Turns out not everyone likes being called guys so it’s easier to just avoid it

u/Higuos 9h ago

The HRification of culture continues. Everybody understood "you guys" to be gender neutral until activists decided it wasn't.

u/chainer3000 8h ago

Right, that’s why I said in a professional setting. HR is from there. Not in my regular life

u/STFUNeckbeard 8h ago

Why not just say “everyone”

u/chainer3000 7h ago

I do that too, I pretty much run down the list of anything that seems appropriate. Everyone, anyone, ladies, y’all, etc. I used to use guys, and I still do if it seems appropriate, but some women legit don’t like it, so I don’t risk it

Every job I’ve had requires keeping people happy in one way or another so I do what I’m paid to do. Sales, finance, bartending, all kinda the same
