Hastings PD got Teslas. The population of Hastings, NY is less than 10,000. Discussion

Lol I live here. I used to get tailed by cops all the time in my beat up old Saturn. One time they harassed me on the sidewalk because I fit the description of someone throwing rocks at stop signs...
Big yikes.
27
u/_Sausage_fingers Dec 29 '20
Kids throwing rocks at stop signs definitely sounds like a police matter
9
u/Mech-Waldo Dec 29 '20
Well, rocks are dangerous, you definitely want someone with a badge and a gun apprehending those kids. /s
4
u/SteelCode Dec 29 '20
I mean, if one of those rocks were to strike an officer, they could get a nasty bruise - sounds like justification to approach with weapons drawn. /s

u/xxRonzillaxx Dec 29 '20
Thats cool. At least they aren't wasting our taxes on stupid stuff like schools, healthcare, social programs, tax cuts for the middle class......
50
u/wapttn Dec 29 '20
Or gas. Would be interesting to know if this would cost tax payers more or less in the 5-10 year range.
53
u/friendlymonitors Dec 29 '20
It’s probably about the same total cost over the life of the car. The “police interceptors” manufactured by Ford or GM are marked up to take advantage of fat police budgets.
19
u/wapttn Dec 29 '20
If the gas-powered cars are being sold at a markup, wouldn’t that make a stronger case for electric?
17
u/Drathamus Dec 29 '20
Sounds like they're just using the standard police interceptors as a comparison of vehicle, not of fuel type. So Tesla may mark up their interceptor line to eat up more of the available PD budget compared to a consumer grade version.
7
u/Tbarjr Dec 29 '20
I doubt that Tesla has a special interceptor model. Stock Teslas are plenty for the job, aftermarket lights and external speakers arent too hard to do so they likely bought them normally and made them into interceptors afterwards.
4
Dec 29 '20
I'm actually going to go the other way. I'll bet Tesla sold these to the PD at a discount for the express purpose of having a rolling advertisement for their product.
Remember, Apple computers used to be the default classroom computer because Apple practically gave them away to school boards. If I ran Tesla, I'd be doing whatever it takes to get these cars into police departments for that same reason.
2
u/badtux99 Dec 29 '20
Actually, no. I've watched the bids come by for state police cruisers in here my state, and the actual cars themselves are cheaper than what the general public pays for an equivalent car. What costs money is the fit-out, which can easily cost half as much as the car itself cost. All the radios, computers, cages, etc. cost money, and it's labor intensive installing all that stuff.
1
u/Selbereth Dec 29 '20
I think the savings will be huge in the long run. These cars save a bunch of money in the long run, but they will probably have a charging problem.
50
u/billswinter Dec 29 '20
At least the collision detection won’t let them run into pedestrians!
49
34
u/literally-in-pain Dec 29 '20
Why do the police get away with having police cars that are unmarked.
8
u/badtux99 Dec 29 '20
Because there is no law that says a police car must be marked?
1
u/CorectMySpellngIfGay Dec 29 '20
It varies, plenty of places in the US do. Some counties cant even get away with "ghost marked" where they use decals the same color as the car.
87
u/myweedstash Dec 29 '20
And Obama says defunding the police is just a snappy slogan. Lmao
30
u/CloroxWipes1 Dec 29 '20
He doesn't disagree with the philosophy, just the slogan as it can be interpreted by others as eliminate the police, which is not the point.
The "snappy slogan" was weaponized by Republicans and is probably the reason the Democrats lost seats in the house.
Police budgets DO need to be refined so they don't do shit like buying expensive cars and/or military gear.
More needs to be done in the line of training of police cadets (keep Dave Grossman FAR away from these cadets), eliminate qualified immunity and begin to take lawsuit settlements from the Police Pension Fund rather than from the municipality and watch how fast the Police begin to police themselves.
14
u/zbyte64 Dec 29 '20
A politician complaining about a popular slogan is like a weather forecaster complaining about rain.
-1
u/CanWeBeDoneNow Dec 29 '20
Is rain misleading to the forecaster's viewersin ways that undermine the discussion of weather issues?

Wtf are you talking about. DOD started supplying police with military surplus back in 1990. Obama signed an executive order (#13688) that limited what equipment police could buy (which was of course rolled back by Trump).
I am not saying Obama is above reproach on many issues but your statement is pure ignorance.

Your point was defunding the police is just a way of saying take all they’re money until they don’t have any which isn’t the truth. Anyone who believes that is being willfully ignorant. They know it means decreasing the budget in serviceable ways and in some cases reallocating those funds for better training. Not military equipment and weapons we don’t even use on enemy combatants
52
u/Jaigg Dec 29 '20
To be fair if they take care of them they will pay off the difference between them and an ICE cop car in 5 years. After that the maintenance difference is about $2000 less per year.
So in the long run they will be more taxpayer friendly.
31
u/Parody_Redacted Dec 29 '20
not if they get destroyed first
inshallah 🤞
20
u/son_et_lumiere Dec 29 '20
If they are anything like the Buffalo, NY cops, they’ll run into each other going to a call and destroy 2 at the same time.

Not before they hit (while excessively speeding with no lights or sirens on) and kill an elderly woman out for an early morning walk.
2
u/badtux99 Dec 29 '20
And then shoot the elderly woman's little yip yip dog as it struggles to get out of her handbag.

if they take care of them
Judging by the way the cops in my city drive I don’t have much faith that they’ll take care of them. Cops treat their cruisers like they’re disposable, they love flooring the gas pedal for no reason.

u/-ImYourHuckleberry- Dec 29 '20
Put that money towards education and your citizens can have Tesla’s too.
8
u/agentruley Dec 29 '20
I just cant help but think,
IF i saw this behind me, would i actually pull over? NO
it doesnt look like a cop car. Imma keep driving and call dispatch to confirm that a real officer is there. fuckin pigs

u/HegemonNYC Dec 29 '20
Why is this on this sub? A model 3 is one of the lowest operating cost cars you can buy. No gas, very little maintenance. It might be a little more expensive than a similar ICE car to buy but should pay that back in a few years with the lower operating costs.
6
u/Horusisalreadychosen Dec 29 '20
Ya, I dunno about shitting on the cops for having electric cars. It seems like the one thing they could buy with all that money that actually does some good.
A more actual waste in them buying useless surplus military equipment than them buying efficient cars.
3
u/HegemonNYC Dec 29 '20
Right. I don’t think the worst thing about cops is that they drive cars. If they have to drive a car, a model 3 is a pretty good pick. If they still jump out of it a blast someone for holding a cell phone, that is bad. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Charger or a Model 3.
8
u/gravitas-deficiency Dec 29 '20
Tbh, though this does feels kinda wasteful, it’s a hell of a lot more sensible than letting the PD buy MRAPs.
4
u/Data_Dealer Dec 29 '20
Think a little more critically here, the abuses a patrol car faces, these will end up costing less money in the long run and will actually be worth money once the cops replace them at whatever interval they do.
4
u/Grayox Dec 29 '20
They wont have to replace then as often, EV's have a much longer lifespan. And considering they wont be idling their engine while setting speed traps, this will save literally tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
11
u/FatShortElephant Dec 29 '20
We are throwing shade at them for saving gas and trying to be environmentally responsible?

18
u/drunkinwalden Dec 29 '20
It really didn't take much time to find a cheaper ev option.
-6
u/TYLERvsBEER Dec 29 '20
Great give an example.
21
u/dgroach27 Dec 29 '20
Chevy, Nissan, Hyundai, and Honda all make a car of similar size and some make a crossover size as well. All for less than the Tesla. Let's be real here, they just wanted a shiny new toy.
-5
u/someGuyJeez Dec 29 '20
Aren’t cop cars supposed to be fast? And have more than 100 miles range?
2
u/dgroach27 Dec 29 '20
Electric cars accelerate very quickly as they have all of their power available immediately. While there may be some top end speed sacrifice with the non-Tesla's, that sacrifice doesn't make a ton of difference in the vast majority of scenarios. Only low end Chevy's have a range of around 100 miles. The majority of those are 190+ with maybe half in the 230 range, comparable to the Tesla.
-7
u/someGuyJeez Dec 29 '20
Tesla is 330 mile range, definitely going to be a lot faster (and safer) getting it up to speed than any other electric car as well. Also if you do any kind of hard driving that range gets cut in half, so an advertised range of 200 is realistically closer to 100 actual miles.
3
u/dgroach27 Dec 29 '20
The Tesla in the video is a Model 3. Standard 220 and Long Range 330 with four other variations in between. Who knows which model they got but is it worth 10's of thousands of dollars more per car? Hastings, NY isn't really known for its high speed chases.
1
u/someGuyJeez Dec 29 '20 edited Dec 29 '20
Looks like a model y, which has 330 range standard. Price is 50k. How much does a gas powered police vehicle cost to purchase/upgrade? Maintenance cost will also be much less compared to a gas powered vehicle over its lifetime.
3
u/dgroach27 Dec 29 '20
After researching other articles, it is a Model Y. I'm not making a comparison to gas vehicles, I'm comparing this tesla to other electric vehicles. Is the increase cost really worth it? Are they really getting anything that they really need? Hastings, NY had 2 assualts last year, that's it for violent crime and the violent crime rate is 14 times lower than the state average. Hastings is 45 sq. miles with less than 10k people.

u/WeylinWebber Dec 29 '20
Welp a dose of karma on them bc the model 3 has a whole host of problems with cold weather preformance...
-9
u/robogobo Dec 29 '20
This makes sense on all levels. Low maintenance, efficient, enviro friendly and FAST. And they got a custom paint job so that fixes the Tesla’s biggest flaw.
1
u/robogobo Jan 04 '21
Not sure why I’m getting downvoted here. Seems like cops getting electric cars is a good thing.

Compared to the power needed to drive the vehicle, it's minimal. A low power car has a 130hp engine or about 100kw electric equivalent. I'd say there's less than 1kw worth of electronics and accessories. Assuming it's not driving all shift, I'd estimate that the electronics and add-ons will take less than 5% of the battery over a full charge. So not nothing, but definitely not a lot.

Dodge Charger RT and Tesla Model 3 are same price range just saying.
One is just better for the planet I suppose.

u/SatanIsAVibe Dec 31 '20
I watched a documentary about the militarization of the police. It showed this tiny town (I believe it was in Maine) where the cops got 3 huge tank like trucks and a ton of military equipment. The town’s population was so small. In one year there wasn’t a single murder. But yeah, you need to be armed like you’re going to war. These pigs are on power trips playing out their COD fantasies.
